⋅◈⋅Reminders: Content of Your Story
And I'm back! Let's get to the topic :)
Remember when I said, be careful on whatever content you're going to put on your story? From the first advice chapter?
It was directed mostly to fanfiction writers.
No, this is not an attack. I'm a fanfiction writer myself and I publish those stories in another account. (Soon to be revealed)
Also this is based from what I saw in Wattpad so far throughout the years.
So...
The content of the stories that I'm worried about are the ones that are so bad but many still do that same thing.
What are those?
* Oh you know what I'm talking about. Right? No? Okay.
I'm talking about stories that have a really bad way of writing... Many things. May it be a love story, a female and male character, main character, a horror story, an adventure story, character's background story, and comedy.
Let me explain how these things can be written horribly that can cause so much pain to the reader's eyes, and damage to their brain cells. (I'm exaggerating but that's how I would describe how I felt reading all those stuff lol)
Love stories that are rushed and always have the characters instantly develop feelings and then get to bed: And the author still twists it into calling it love, or worse, 'true love'. Portrayal of love does not work like this, it's"lust". I would usually picture the whole plot as a story of how to get a one night stand.............................................. Sorry kids. XD
Female and male characters that are always written badly and almost doesn't have any other purpose in the story: Like girls who are suppose to be badass and tough and needs no man but ends up needing a man's help and getting whiny all of a sudden.
A guy who is all hot and sexy but has a dark past, a girl who is "different from other girls", a guy who is "different from other guys" cliche.
Characters who have no other purpose in the story other than being there to flirt with the main character, be the sexy one, or the funny one for comic relief, the love interest, etc. are boring characters. Give them a life, please.
Main characters who are dumb but are so 'special' but you see nothing special about them because... They were written horribly: I am talking about main characters who always trips/falls when they run, who are dense idiots, have no other skills, has no strength so they squirm in the corner when threatened and allow people to hurt them, has no other things to do but to be emo and depressed because it's sexy, mysterious and attractive to the love interest..... But she/he has something special that's why she's/he's the main character. (this is sarcastic, by the way)
What is the something special?
Either she's/he's the "chosen one", or "the one", or "the special experiment to save the world", or "she's/he's just special in their own way without any explanation" etc.
Stop with these kinds of characters.
Also, I read a lot of main characters (Y/n) who have too many super powers but still acts weak when a bunch of perverts try to harass her just so her love interest could save her? How does that make sense? (I see this in many Naruto fanfics (Kakashi X Reader), Diabolik Lovers fanfic, Hunter X Hunter fanfics, One Piece fanfics, not sure with My Hero Academia and Attack on Titan but I'm betting on it)
Nope! Stop making these things.
Horror Stories that are not scary at all: I don't have much to say for this genre but if you are planning to write a horror or thriller, stay away from characters who exists only to scream, be dumb, and act scared all the time.
Adventure Stories: So far, I found good ones and managed not to find bad ones. Make sure that the characters are out for the hunt. Give them a mission where stakes are high and they have to be successful no matter what the cost. Excitement and good drama and intense emotions can build up in the story. Of course, when written well.
Character's backstory: And I mean backstory, not a diary of a depressed teenager or adult. There's a lot of stories where authors overuse abusive sexual/non-sexual relationships, orphaned and starved on the streets story, or death of a whole family/clan to be the drama in a character's background story. (Mostly in anime fanfics)
Don't worry, death of a whole clan/family/ friends can still be used in a background story but it will be up to you on how well you do it and not make it look like the many other fanfics. Like not all characters who's loved one died grew up to be a cold and heartless person (a lot of main characters are like this).
There are those who still remained human and still care for people (ex. Kakashi Hatake, Leorio Paladinight, Nico Robin, Avatar Aang)
Comedy: When trying to write something to make your audience laugh, remember to watch out if it's going to offend people like a particular religion, race, community, country, and the most dangerous: fandoms, I guess. Just be careful with fandoms. ^-^
Oh, and don't make jokes about people who got hurt (heart break, physical damage, and people with disabilities unless they are something like Toph Beifong's blind jokes from Avatar the Last Airbender) But don't make fun of these people, that's the point.
Final Reminder:
1. Don't write something you can't handle: If you want to write something that involves complex ideas like maybe something involving scientific explanation, politics, social organizations and institutions, historical references.... But you don't have enough knowledge and can't understand them yet...
Then either do your research of think of something more simple.
2. Good content: I don't know what good content for you is like but I'm pretty sure that good content means having interesting and relatable characters, exciting plot, cliche's done right (because people just can't avoid them all), realistic emotions and well.... A touch of originality and creativity even with recycled ideas.
Oh, and less grammatical and spelling mistakes with proper structure of the story like the paragraphs, placing of dialogue. The technical stuff. ( I will dedicate a chapter for technicalities in writing soon)
3. Originality: Even in fanfictions, we still have to think of how we can add our own original ideas to go with the story and create something interesting. In anime fanfictions, their world is already created for us to use, but Alternate Universe (AU) stories are interesting too. Use your creativity to craft your story into a masterpiece.
It's difficult to be original when writing anime fanfiction especially when you want to also rewrite the events in the anime but with your character in it. But I've read stories where authors used the same plot in the anime but were still able to make the story interesting.
So if they can do it, so can you!
I recommend these books if you're interested so you can also have some ideas:
Red (Diabolik Lovers fanfic) by Not-So-Grim
Split String of Fate: (Killua X Reader X Kurapika) by oOcalypsoOo
Behind the Mask (Kakashi X Reader) by conjuring_elements
Draconian (Dramione fanfic) by hepburnettes
Chains (Sabo x Reader) by evaienna
That's all for now!
