ஓ๑Advice: The Alarm Clock

The alarm clock and the things that come after.

Ever gotten tired of starting a story with the infamous "alarm clock scene"? The ones usually used in high school stories, fanfics, or any story typically writen by many teen writers and possibly young adult fiction (though I haven't encountered that one so far).

If you've been around for quite some time reading teen fiction and fanfiction, you will probably understand how it feels like.

So for our starters out there and teen writers, I am only going to advise you not to start your story off with that scene. Please dear writer. We've had enough.

This is simply because this has been overused throughout the years. Beginning around 2013, I've been encountering the same or similar scenes in a beginning of a story where it starts with the main character waking up in the morning with the sound of their alarm clock.

Examples include:

Beep! Beep! Beep!

My alarm clock woke me up and I'm too lazy to get out of bed. Gosh, I hate it that I'd have to wake up early for school.

Or something like this

I shot up from bed hearing my annoying alarm clock. Ugh! Why the hell do I always have to be disturbed.

And you know what's next after this?
Well, if you've guessed it, it's the unnecessary detail of the character's morning routine that no one should be interested about.

Just get it done, no need for details and go straight to where the character should be which is some place more inportant than narrating the whole story of how your character woke up, brushed their teeth, washed their face, changed their clothes, went downstairs to be greeted by their parents or sibling, had their breakfast, or how they went to school if they walked or took the bus.

If it's not important, cut it out.

If you want the readers to get a feel of just getting started with the story, just put on anything with your creativity just not the alarm clock scene or the boring daily routine. Make it good. The first word, sentence, or paragraph at the beginning of the chapter is vital to hook your reader into reading further and sticking around for more chapters.

Now, before we end this topic, so far I've had this question for this cliche.

Can writers still use the alarm clock scene and write it differently or still deliver it good even if it's a cliche?

Well...........

Don't know about you but I've had enough and I'm tired of it. If you come across a story who's done the cliche well, please let me know.

I'm not sure how it's going to be written "well" though like how some other cliches could be.

But anyways, don't make the mistake. There are probably some people out there who doesn't mind the alarm clock scene at the beginning of the story but I'm sure at some point, they will eventually get tired of it.
