Chapter 27:Jia
It wasn't hard to adjust to life with Maddi back. We'd spent almost three years with her so it wasn't anything new. But what was new was her hair. We're guessing she didn't originally have a Warlock mark because she was young and originally had Shadowhunter blood. That must've fought against any magic that was given to her until her full powers came in. About a week after she returned home she started to grow blue hair in. They were just little streaks here and there. I asked Magnus about it, wondering if this was just a prank of his or a way to change our daughters hair color. He said he had no idea where the blue hair had come from, so we eventually assumed it was her Warlock mark. We didn't expect her to get one, but it doesn't matter. She's still ours.
Another new thing was her magic. She used it all the time without realizing it. Her ability to tell the future was actually quite rare. Like Magnus, she only knows sometimes. Things that happened more often were teleporting and levitating. Sometimes when we would put her to bed we'd find her on the kitchen counter just minutes later. Sometimes when she's in the kitchen with us a pan would just fall from the highest self. Eventually Magnus is going to have to teach her to control them, but right now she's too young to learn. Magnus suggested waiting at least another year. We'll just have to bear it til then. Hopefully they don't get too out of hand til Magnus can teach her.
It was mostly a relief to have her back, but I was worried if the Faeries would come after us or Maddi. Injuring their Queen wouldn't sit well with them, and the fact that we barely escaped last time made it even worse. The fact that we escaped wasn't good either. They haven't showed up yet which is good, but I'm still scared. No Faeries have asked Magnus to do any work for them either. We don't know whether or not they'll strike, but we're hoping they don't. Even though there's hardly any chance that they won't. It worries me, but I'll just have to deal with it. And figure out a way to fix it if it does happen.
I was on the couch when Magnus appeared beside me. "Alec, I just received this fire message. It's from Jia Penhallow."
"Jia? I haven't talked to her in a while. What does it say?" It has been a while since I had talked to her or Aline. I wonder what she must want.
"It just says that she's coming over today. That's all. She didn't give a reason or anything, but it must be important if she is coming here from Idris to just talk to you." Taking time from her job as Councul does sound unusual, but I did spend some of my childhood with her. Adding the fact that I have a child means that it's nothing.
"It's nothing, I'm sure. My mom must've told her that we got Maddi back. She just wants to see her I bet. Speaking of which, where is Maddi?"
"She's in her room. Her hair keeps growing in. I wouldn't be surprised if by the time she's a teenager she'll have a head full of blue hair." I laughed because I didn't expect this hair, but now she might have full on blue hair. Magnus will enjoy styling her hair. And it's also nice to hear "when she's a teenager." It means we're certain we'll still have her by then. We don't have to be uncertain anymore. It's a nice feeling.
"What are you thinking about?" Magnus asked when he saw the smile on my face.
"Just our family."
~o~
It was late and Jia still hadn't showed up. She did decide to come on short notice. She was more than likely getting some work done before she gets here. I'm expecting her any minute though.
Maddi sat on my lap, watching tv while I read a book. I occasionally ruffled her hair, and every time I did she giggled. The little one also liked to hold my hand. Her small hand completely covered by mine. Suddenly she pointed towards the door. "The door!" she yelled. Even though the doorbell hadn't ringed, she knew. It must be Jia. She jumped on the floor and waiting for me to follow her. I got up and held her hand as I walked over to the door. "You're going to meet someone name Jia, cutie." She grinned and I opened the door. There stood Jia in her robes and she seemed to be in the middle of knocking on my door. "Hello, Jia." Her face showed age around her eyes, but she still appeared young.
"Alexander. It's great to see you." She hugged me. "And who's this." She got on eye level with Maddi. "Hello. I'm Jia," she said calmly and smiling.
"I'm Madeleine!" she replied enthusiastically.
"We call her Maddi," I added.
"She's cute. But I wanted to talk to you personally. Can you take her to Magnus?" Her sudden change in personality surprised me, but I still did as I was told.
"Maddi. Go with Papa." She nodded and started running towards our room. "She's gone, what do you want to talk about."
She started walking towards the living room and sat down. I sat across from her. "It's actually about Maddi." I must've looked how I felt. Shocked and confused. "There's nothing wrong with her, we just need to discuss some...things about her. Like is she really a girl who was born as a Shadowhunter, but acquired Warlock powers by having dark magic praticed on her as a young child? Is this correct?"
"Yes that is exactly what happened. Why do you ask?"
"Well, according to my sources, you both had quite some trouble getter her back from the hands of the Fae. Do you care to elaborate?"
"Um, okay?" I replied uncertainty. I then told her everything. From Aversa, all the way to escaping from the Queen.
"I see. This is exactly what I feared." She looked downwards at her feet.
"Jia. What do you mean by that?" She sighed. Such a simple gesture can have so much meaning. This is hard for her.
"You've always known that the relationship between Shadowhunters and Faeries has always been difficult. But you've injured their Queen. There's nothing stopping them from causing a war with us. Do you understand what you have to do?" I honestly didn't. Why did I have to do something? I don't work for the Clave. What can I do?
"Jia. Please explain."
"Oh, Alexander. You know exactly what you must do." Im not a member of the Clave. I thought it over, then it dawned on me. It felt like being submerged in a pool of ice water. "I see you'be figured it out."
"I have, and all I want to know is how long."
Hey guys, yes I did purposely make this chapter short so I could leave you on a cliffhanger. Also, this is the dreaded authors note that always has to show up eventually. This means the story is almost over. But don't you doubt for one second that I don't have anything is store for you guys. Now that that is out of the way, read, vote, and stay awesome!
