Six

"Dang it's dark here." Jenna said.

"I know." I say scurrying on the ground.

A cave was no place for me. The darkness blinds me. I'm always afraid I'd fall or get eaten by something. This is so nerve wracking. I try not to look fearful. I hear a wet breathing. I look. I turn the color of the rock. I didn't want to know what that sound was.

I see a dark black mass scurrying along the ground. I see it had pointy ears and a dog like face. Its teeth were as white and as shiny as the moon. Oh no. I was hoping we could avoid these things. They look about the same size as a raccoon, but they are far more dangerous. Their jaws can bite through bone and rock. They have a nasty smell and attitude.

A Tasmanian Devil, our deadliest predator. They'll eat about anything as long as it's flesh and bone. They have hunted my kind the Camonia to the brink of extinction, so few of us are left. I find myself alone in this forest. I find to be the only one of my kind here. They have an enormous appetite.

It scurried along the ground sniffing and breathing. I know it wants food. It wants blood. Jenna was safe as long as she stayed below the surface, way below. I'm the only one in danger. Fortunately, I had one big advantage. I can disappear in plain sight. I remain motionless, not moving a muscle. Moving one would reveal my location and that'd be bad at the very least.

I see it closely now. This was a big one. I hear a squeal. I see it charge. I hold my breathe. It wasn't after me. It was after a rat. Other than us, it seems like mice and snakes are its favorite meal. It runs off. I slowly turn back to my normal color.

"That was close." I mutter.

Let's find these creatures fast. I don't want to know what else lies in the darkness.
