The Rebel Flesh
The song 'Supermassive Black Hole' by Muse blasted through the speakers of the TARDIS as Amy and Rory played a game of darts they had set up by the TARDIS door. The board hanging on one of the roundels. A blackboard beside it to keep score. The Doctor and the Stone stood beside the console that had a couple of clothes on it which then lead a trail up to the stairs. Rory stood in front of the board, preparing himself with a small dart in his hand. He then threw it at the board and grinned quite pleased with himself while Amy walked over to the blackboard. "Forty-six." She said writing the score on the board. "Rubbishy, rubbishy, rubbish."
"Hello?" Rory frowned thinking that his wife had made a mistake. "It's a double top."
"Wrong side of the wire, mister." Amy remarked.
"You're on the, Red." Rory frowned.
The Stone curiously watched the two humans who seemed to be enjoying themselves, at least for now. They didn't realise how worried both the Time Lords actually were about Amy who was neither pregnant or not pregnant at the current moment. They both stared at the scanner which repeatedly switched between the two not having to slow down on either option. The Doctor slightly frowned his eyes shifting to the Stone clearly knowing it wasn't the TARDIS being faulty. He had done a body scan on the Time Lady after both the humans had definitely gone to sleep. It came back negative which he knew was correct since he did a body scan in the med bay not too long ago.
The Stone let out a small quiet sigh, only loud enough for the Doctor to actually hear who took her hand and lightly squeezed it before he turned the music blasting into the TARDIS off. "Who wants fish and chips?"
Rory raised his hand while the Stone grinned at the idea trying to make it look like she wasn't hiding anything which was surprisingly quiet hard with Amy.
"We'll drop you both off." The Doctor nodded moving around the console with the Stone. "Take your time. Don't rush."
"Doctor." The Stone gritted out giving him a pointed look. Honestly way to make it obvious.
"Er, and you two?" Rory looked between them.
"Things to do." The Doctor nodded. "Things involving other things."
"Well, we'll stay with you," Amy said stepping closer to the console. "We'll do the other things."
"Nope."
"You're getting my fish and chips." The Stone pouted.
"Exactly." The Doctor pointed at the Time Lady.
"Whatever you're up to." Amy pointed between them. "I'd personally like to be a part of it." The Time Lords stared at Amy, making her frown at them. "What?" She looked between them seeing the way they were both looking at her.
"This is something the Stone and I have to do alone." The Doctor countered, glancing at his wife who nodded slightly.
Amy looked at both the Time Lords before she opened her mouth to reply, only to snap it close when a klaxon blared just as the four of them began to get throw in all different directions. The Stone groaned managing to grab onto the scanner and pull it around to see what was going on. "Solar tsunami!" She exclaimed gritting her teeth as the TARDIS attempted to throw her around. "Came directly from your sun. A tidal wave of radiation. Oh dear..."
"Oh, Stone," Rory groaned out pressed against one of the railings. "My tummy's going funny."
"Well, the gyrator disconnected!" The Doctor shouted. "Target tracking is out."
"Assume the position!" The Stone exclaimed ducking down under the console, the Doctor right beside her one of his arms around her, grabbing onto the console. Amy immediately ducked down her hands coming up to protectively hold her head between her knees.
Rory darted around confused for a moment before he copied Amy, his head between his knees staring down at under the console, through the glass flooring.
The TARDIS jolted for the last time before it went silent. The Doctor jumped up taking the Stones hand and helping her up while Amy and Rory slowly looked around hearing the Stones boots clicking against the glass. "Textbook landing." The Doctor grinned.
"If you even looked at textbooks." The Stone grinned, very much enjoying teasing the Time Lord.
"I do look at textbooks!" The Doctor exclaimed.
"Is that before or after you throw them out, Doctor?" The Stone joked.
"You're mean." He pouted.
"And you're adorable when I tease you." The Time Lady hummed patting his cheek before heading out of the TARDIS. Amy smirked finding it hilarious how much the Stone had the Doctor practically wrapped around her finger. Rory lightly patted the Doctors shoulder in sympathy understanding how he felt with Amy having done the same to him.
"Strange." The Stone hummed.
"Strange?" The Doctor said in a mocking tone, still slightly annoyed from when the Time Lady teased him. He then looked up looking slightly pleased with himself with what he had found. "Behold, a cockerel!" He turned towards the Stone. "Love a cockerel." The Doctor then walked into the castle-like arched entrance. The clearly old castle with parts of it broken.
"And underneath, a monastery." The Stone noted lightly sniffing one of the nearby walls. "Thirteenth century."
"Really dear?" The Doctor raised a brow at her looking slightly disgusted.
"Oh come on." She rolled her eyes at her husband for what he was actually suggesting, the grimace on his face showing his thoughts as clear as day. "At least I don't lick everything in my path."
"I do not do that!" He groaned.
Amy sighed at the two swearing that they were both one instead of almost one thousand with how they were acting, knowing it was only them both teasing which could look like childish arguing to anyone from afar. "Oh, we've gone all medieval."
"I'm not sure about that." Rory frowned noticing what the Time Lords had spotted. The Stone slightly tilting her head at the small hole in the ground, a pipe going through it with the words 'Danger Corrosive' written on it. The faint sound of the song You Don't Have To Say You Love Me by Dusty Springfield also gave it away.
"Really?" Amy said slightly amused not catching onto what Rory had noticed. "Medieval expert are you?"
"No, it's just that I can hear Dusty Springfield." He admitted.
"These fissures are new." The Doctor frowned. "Solar tsunami sent out a huge wave of gamma particles. This is caused by a magnetic quake that occurs just before the wave hits."
"Well, the monastery's standing," Amy noted looking up at the building.
The Doctor brought out a small snow globe and lightly shook it, shaking his face slightly he muttered: "Yeah, for now."
"Doctor, look." Rory frowned at the pipe.
"Yeah." The Doctor nodded watching the Stone quickly scan it.
"It's a supply pipe." She informed. "Ceramic inner lining. Something corrosive, possibly acid." She said looking at the Doctor who shrugged unsure himself. "I don't know but they're pumping something nasty off this island to the mainland."
"My mum's a massive fan of Dusty Springfield." Rory hummed looking at the monetary.
"Who isn't?" The Doctor replied before taking the Time Lady's hand, hopping over the small hole he began to lead the way with the Stone. "Right, let's go. Satisfy our rabid curiosity."
The four continued on, reaching a courtyard near where the TARDIS had landed. "So where are these Dusty Springfield loving monks, then?" Amy frowned, the music still playing clearly.
"I think we're here." The Doctor said. "This is it."
"Doctor, what are you talking about?" Rory frowned. "We've never been here before."
"Hmm?" The Time Lord hummed.
"We came here by accident?" Amy asked a little confused.
"Accident?" He said sounding slightly offended while turning around to face Amy. "Yes, I know. Accident."
"Ow!" Rory cried out after jerking his hand away from one of the pipes. The Stone winced her previous assumption correct.
"Acid." The Doctor nodded at them. "They're pumping acid off this island. That's old stuff. Fresh acid, you wouldn't have a finger."
An alarm then started to blare around them. "Intruder alert. Intruder alert."
The Doctor scanned the air again and slightly frowned showing his wife his sonic who also looked slightly confused.
"Interesting..." She hummed while the Doctor nodded in agreement.
"There are people coming. Well, almost."
"Almost coming?" Amy questioned.
"Almost people." The Time Lords corrected in unison.
"I think we should really be going," Rory said before being pulled away by Amy.
"Come on!"
"I'm telling you." He continued. "When something runs towards you, it is never for a nice reason."
----------------------------------------------------------------
The Time Lords continued through the monastery with Amy and Rory, they walked into a room where human-shaped harnesses were around the edge of the room, each with a sleeping person, or almost person inside. "What are all these harnesses for?" Amy frowned eyeing the bodies in the harnesses.
"The almost people?" Rory guessed.
"What are they," Amy asked grimacing and slightly stepping away from the harnesses. "prisoners, or are they meditating, or what?"
"Well, at the moment they fall into the or what category." The Doctor answered.
"Halt and remain calm." A voice came through the speakers.
"Well, we've halted." The Doctor said glancing around. "How are we all doing on the calm front?"
"I believe I'm quite calm Doctor." The Stone muttered.
"Don't move!" A gray-haired man in what looked like an acid suit without a helmet shouted pointing something at the four, another man in the same suit on the right while a woman who was not wearing a suit stood in between them slightly back.
"Stay back, Jen." The other man warned. "We don't know who they are. "
"So let's ask them." She cut in looking annoyed. "Who the hell are you?"
Amy noticed something and looked around confused while the Doctor smiled. "Well, I'm the Doctor, and this is Amy and Rory." He pointed at the humans. "And not to forget my wife the Stone." He grinned at the Time Lady who lightly chuckled in response wondering how the Doctor was still so adorable after knowing him for centuries. "It's all very nice, isn't it?" He then commented.
"Hold up." Amy cut in pointing at the three. "You're all. What are you all? Like identical twins?"
Two other people in acid suits then walked in. another man and a woman. "This is an Alpha Grade industrial facility." She stated walking up to the Time Lords. "Unless you work for the military or for Morpeth Jetson, you are in big trouble."
"Actually, you're in big trouble." The Doctor corrected showing her his psychic paper.
"Meteorological Department?" The woman looked at them all curiously, seeming to not believe them. "Since when?"
"Since you were hit by a solar wave." The Stone informed.
"Which we survived."
"Just, by the look of it." The Doctor added. "And there's a bigger one on the way."
"Which we'll also survive. Dickens, scan for bugs."
"Backs against the wall. Now."
The Time Lords and the Ponds did as told, their hands raised as the man scanned them with a device.
"You're not a monastery, you're a factory. Twenty-second-century army-owned factory."
"You're the army?"
"No, love. We're contractors, and you're trespassers."
"It's clear, boss."
"All right, weatherman, your ID checks out. If there's another solar storm, what are you going to do about it? Hand out sunblock?"
"We need to see your critical systems." The Doctor said slightly smiling.
"Which one?"
The Stone gave her a warning look. "You know which one."
----------------------------------------------------------------
The Doctor followed the group in acid suits until they stepped into a room. The Time Lords knew exactly what it was they were looking for. "And there you are." The Doctor commented stepping closer to it.
"Meet the government's worst kept secret: The Flesh. It's fully programmable matter. In fact, it's even learning to replicate itself at the cellular level."
"Right. Brilliant." Amy nodded before admitting: "Lost."
"Okay. Once a reading's been taken, we can manipulate its molecular structure into anything. Replicate a living organism down to the hairs on its chinny chin chin. Even clothes. And everything's identical. Eyes, voice"
"Mind, soul?" The Doctor questioned.
"Don't be fooled, Doctor. It acts like life but it still needs to be controlled by us, from those harnesses you saw."
"Wait, whoa. Hold it." Rory cut in. "So, you're Flesh now?"
"I'm lying in a harness back in that chamber. We all are, except Jennifer here. Don't be scared. This thing, just like operating a forklift truck."
"You said it could grow." The Stone corrected. "Only living things grow."
"Moss grows." She eyed the Time Lady. "It's no more than that. This acid is so dangerous we were losing a worker every week. So now we mine the acid using these doppelgangers. Or Gangers. If these bodies get burnt or fall in the acid-"
"Then who the hell cares, right, Jen?"
"Nerve endings automatically cut off like airbags being discharged," Jennifer explained. "We wake up and get a new Ganger."
"It's weird, but you get used to it."
"Jennifer, I want you in your Ganger. Get back to the harness."
The young woman left and the Doctor brought out his sonic. The Stone gave him a weary look that he most likely made even worse with the soft smile on his face that could mean one of two things: 1) he was about to do something that he knew was very stupid. Or 2) he was about to do something he knew his wife would hate.. "Hang on, what's he up to?" The man called Buzzer noticed. "What you up to, pal?"
"Stop it." The Doctor said after it seemed that the flesh was keeping him still, his sonic still scanning. He let out a small gasp and pulled his hand away, returning his sonic to his pocket. "Strange. It was like for a moment there it was scanning me."
"Doctor." The Time Lord frowned and placed his hand on the surface of Flesh.
"Get back, Doctor," Cleaves ordered watching the Doctor slightly cry in pain. "Leave it alone." He then yanked his hand free breaking deeply.
"I understand." He looked at the Stone who looked at him to explain.
"Doctor?" Amy cautiously asked. "Are you all right?"
"Incredible." He breathed, turning Ganger Cleaves. "You have no idea. No idea. I mean, I felt it in my mind." He gestured up to his head. "I reached out to it, and it to me."
"Don't fiddle with the money, Doctor." Ganger Cleaves warned.
"How can you be so blinkered?" He questioned. "It's alive. So alive. You're piling your lives, your personalities directly into it." There was then a loud bang and a flash of light.
"It's the solar storm. The first waves come in pairs. Pre-shock and fore-shock. It's close."
"Buzzer, we got anything from the mainland yet?"
"No, the comms are still too jammed with radiation."
"Okay. Then we'll keep pumping acid until the mainland says stop. Now why don't you stand back and let us impress you?" She looked at the Doctor.
----------------------------------------------------------------
The Time Lords, Amy, Rory and the crew of the flesh all watched as a small tank that looked similar to a human bath filled up with a creamy liquid. The Stone raised a brow as the liquid stopped flowing into the tank and two eyes appeared followed by a nose and then a mouth. A moment later a flesh Jennifer was lying in the tank before she sat up.
"Well," the Doctor looked between his wife and the flesh Jennifer. "I can see why you keep it in a church. Miracle of life."
"No need to get poncey. It's just gunge." The Stone frowned slightly.
Cleaves shook her head. "Guys, we need to get to work.l
"Okay, everybody, let's crack on."
"Did I mention the solar storm?" He looked at the Stone who nodded. The Doctor looked at the team. "You need to get out of here."
"Where do you want us to go?" Jimmy asked with a small shrug. "We're on a tiny island."
"Well, we can get you all off it." The Stone answered. "Right sweetheart?"
"Don't be ridiculous." Cleaves scoffed. "We've got a job to do."
An alarm started to blare. The Doctor shook his head. "It's coming."
"That's the alarm," Jennifer added.
The Stone frowned. "If it's just this out here then how do you get power?"
"We're solar," Cleaves replied. "We use a solar router. The weathervane."
"Big problem." The Doctor muttered.
Jimmy looked between Cleaves and both the Time Lords with a slightly nervous expression on his face as the alarm continued to echo "Boss, maybe if the storm's back we should get underground. The factory's seen better days. The acid pipes might not withstand another hit."
"We have two hundred tons of acid to pump out. We fall behind, we stay another rotation. Anyone want that?" She looked around at her co-workers.
"Please, you are making a massive mistake here." The Doctor begged stepping closer to the woman. "You're right at the crossroads of it. Don't turn the wrong way. If you don't prepare for this storm, you are all in terrible danger. Understand?"
"My factory, my rules."
The Stone shook her head and cut in before the Doctor could argue any more. "Fine but we need to check the progress of the storm."
The Doctor looked at his wife and sighed, nodding in agreement. "Where's the monitoring station?"
"Three lefts, a right and a left." Jennifer replied. "Third door on your left."
"Thank you."
----------------------------------------------------------------
"Waves disturbing the Earth's magnetic field." The Doctor explained. "There is going to be the mother and father of all power surges. See this weathervane, the cock-a-doodle-do? It's a solar router feeding the whole factory with solar power. When that wave hits, ka-boom. I've to get to that cockerel before all hell breaks loose." He turned to head off before stopping, he turned around with a grin on his face. "I never thought I'd have to say that again."
"Oh come on, sweetheart." The Stone rolled her eyes as she grabbed his hand.
"Yes, dear." He nodded and pointed at Amy. "Amy, breathe."
"Yeah! I mean, thanks. I'll try."
----------------------------------------------------------------
The two Time Lords ran up to the top of the spiral staircase, reaching the top the Stone looked up at the sky and swallowed hard as the meteor shower travelled past. The Doctor looked at his wife and gave a firm nod. "Be careful." She warned kissing his cheek. The Doctor gave a soft smile before he headed up the ladder, climbing towards the top where the High Voltage box was situated.
The Doctor opened the box and began to open relays, all of a sudden a huge voltage blasted down the church from the cockerel, making the Doctor gasp and let go of the ladder.
"Doctor!" The Stone cried as the Time Lord fell, the Stone didn't move an inch as he fell right onto her, causing the both of them to be knocked out from the impact.
----------------------------------------------------------------
The Doctor groaned and rolled off his wife before realising that it was actually her he was lying on. "Dear?" He frowned gently shaking one of her shoulders. He placed his ear to her chest and softly smiled upon hearing her calm double heartbeat. The Doctor kissed his wife's forehead before he groaned again and stood up. He picked up his wife in the bridal position and rested her head against his shoulder. "You can rest dear, trust me you're gonna need it for all the running we no doubt will need to do later."
The Stone shifted slightly in his arms but the Doctor kissed her head again and headed back towards the courtyard to get to the Flesh room with Amy and Rory.
----------------------------------------------------------------
"Cleaves," the Doctor spotted the woman. "You're not in your harness."
"I'm sorry, Doctor. You were right." She apologised.
"You've lost all power to the factory.
"Doctor, I abandoned my team."
"Then let's go get them." He headed to the door to head inside.
----------------------------------------------------------------
The Doctor smiled when the Stones eyes blinked open. "Morning dear."
The Time Lady groaned and the Doctor chuckled while kidding her forehead. "How long was I asleep for?"
"Well, that depends." The Doctor hummed. "How long would you say we were unconscious for, Cleaves?" He asked the woman.
"Not long. A minute, two minutes?"
"I'd hazard we've been out a teensy bit longer." He replied. "The Stone was just a bit sleepy and decided to have a quick nap, she's okay though."
The Time Lady's cheeks burned a light pink while the Doctor helped her to stand. "Then again that's my fault after I kept her up all last night." He sent a wink to his wife making her roll her eyes at him as her cheeks burned even darker.
Cleaves shook her head before she frowned. "How long do you think we've been out then?"
"An hour." The Time Lord answered. "I've seen whole worlds turned inside out in an hour. A lot can go wrong in an hour."
----------------------------------------------------------------
The Doctor, the Stone and Cleaves all entered the Harness room where Amy and Rory were with the rest of Cleaves team.
"Doctor, these are all real people," Amy said looking at the Time Lords, "so where are their Gangers?"
"Don't worry," Cleaves replied. "When the link shuts down the Gangers return to pure Flesh. Now, the storm's left us with acid leaks all over, so we need to contact the mainland. They can have a rescue shuttle out here in no time."
The Stone frowned and looked at the Doctor whose eyebrows rose while Jimmy turned to the group as Dusty Springfield began to play again. "That's my record." Jimmy frowned. "Who's playing my record?"
"Your Gangers." The Stone answered. "They've gone on a bit of a walk." The two Time Lords headed off in a direction as the others followed.
Cleaves shook her head and ran to catch up with the two. "No, it's impossible. They're not active. Cars don't fly themselves, cranes don't lift themselves and Gangers don't-"She stopped noticing the chaos that was made in the dining hall.
"No way." Buzzer breathed seeing that the Gangers had been in the room and completely ruined it. Items were missing and on the floor in piles while some cards were stacked up in a pyramid.
"I don't, I don't believe this." Cleaves looked around the mess.
"They could've escaped through the service door at the back," Jimmy added.
"This is just like the Isle of Sheppey." Buzzer explained.
The Doctor walked further into the room with the Stone and sat down on a chair next to the table, the Stone leaned against him as he wrapped an arm around her. "It would seem the storm has animated your Gangers."
"They've ransacked everything." Cleaves accused.
The Stone shook her head. "No, not ransacked, they've searched."
"Through our stuff!"
The Time Lady cut in from Cleaves, sharply cutting her off as her eyes narrowed. "Their stuff."
Jimmy frowned at her. "Searching for what?"
"Confirmation." The Doctor added. "They need to know their memories are real."
"Oh, so they've got flaming memories now."
"They feel compelled to connect to their lives."
"Their stolen lives."
"No, bequeathed." The Doctor explained. "You gave them this. You poured in your personalities, emotions, traits, memories, secrets, everything. You gave them your lives. Human lives are amazing. Are you surprised they walked off with them?"
"I'll say it again." Buzzer cut in. "Isle of Sheppey. Ganger got an electric shock, toddled off, killed his operator right there in his harness. I've seen the photos. This bloke's ear was all hanging-"
"Even if this has actually happened, they can't remain stable without us plumbed in to them, can they, boss."
"Guess we'll find out." She shrugged.
"Are you okay?" Rory looked at Jennifer. "Do you need some water?"
"I feel funny. I need the washroom." She headed out. Amy watched as they left while the Stone slowly shook her head and headed over to the other ginger. "He's trying to help."
"I know but-" She went to cut in.
"Amy he loves you." She continued. "Trust me I know how it feels, so many women and men flirt with the Doctor but look at him." They turned towards the Doctor who was examining the card tower.
"I know he loves me Amy and deep down you know Rory loves you. He only understands how Jennifer feels. Remember when he was first on the TARDIS?"
"He was terrified."
"Exactly." The Stone nodded. "I helped him, took him under my wing so to say and was the Doctor jealous? Knowing him he probably was but he kept it under control and so can you."
Amy sighed and nodded tightly hugging the Time Lady. "Thank you." She smiled before frowning. "You're so much easier to talk to than the Doctor."
The Stone snorted as she watched the Doctor head over to a microwave. He placed a meal on a plate in there and shut the door before setting a timer. "My husband gets distracted too easily."
"We need to protect ourselves," Jimmy told the group.
The Doctor picked up a plate with a microwave meal on it before he placed the meal into the microwave and set the timer.
"Are you a violent man, Jimmy?" The Time Lord asked.
"No."
The Doctor frowned, tilting his head ever so slightly, "Then why would the other Jimmy be?"
Cleaves frowned seeing what the Doctor was doing. "Don't tell me you can eat at a time like this, Doctor."
"You told me we were out cold for a few minutes, Cleaves, when in fact it was an hour."
"Sorry, I just assumed-"
"Well, it's not your fault. Like I said, they're disoriented. Amy, when you got to the alcoves, who was in a harness?"
"Jimmy and Dicken were helping Buzzer out."
"And what about Jennifer?" The Stone asked.
"She was standing on her own when we got to her."
The microwave made a dinging noise and the Doctor picked up a plate with a towel before handing it to Cleaves, placing it in her bare hands.
The Stone raised a brow, the Doctor and the Stone shared a glance. "Careful, it's hot." The Time Lord warned.
Cleaves dropped the plate in an instant as she let out a yelp before grabbing her hand in pain.
"Trans-matter's still a little rubbery. Nerve endings not quite fused properly." The Doctor muttered.
"What are you talking about?" Cleaves frowned.
"It's okay." The Doctor reassured.
"Why didn't I feel that?" Cleaves asked.
"You will." The Stone reassured. "You'll stabilise, soon."
"No, stop it." She snapped. "You're playing stupid games. Stop it!"
"She isn't." The Doctor replied. "You don't have to hide. Please, trust me. I'm the Doctor."
Cleaves turned to face the Time Lords who both stepped back as she looked at them in the ganger form.
Buzzer grabbed a small knife as Jimmy grabbed the man, pulling him back. "Where's the real Cleaves, you thing? What have you done with her?"
"That's it." The Doctor nodded. "Good, you remember. This is early Flesh. The early stages of the technology. So much to learn."
Amy frowned, looking at both the Time Lords. "Doctor's happened to her?"
"She can't stabilise." The Stone explained. "She's shifting between half-formed and fully-formed, for now at least."
"We are living." She stated before screaming and running out of the room.
"Let her go." The Doctor ordered.
"Doctor, Rory."
"Rory?" He frowned.
The Stone rolled her eyes and hit her husband on the back of the head. "Rory!" She hissed.
"Oh, Rory." He suddenly understood, gesturing a long nose. "Rory! Always with the Rory." He turned to the Stone and looked hurt. "And ow!"
"Oh stop whining sweetheart." She rolled her eyes as they ran out.
----------------------------------------------------------------
They headed through the outside of the Monastery before skidding to a stop as they heard a hissing sound and noticed a large amount of acid had leaked onto the floor, blocking the way. "Explosion must've ruptured the acid feeds," Jimmy explained. "We're going to need the acid suits."
"No, no, no. We haven't got time." The Doctor replied, stepping back with the Stone who pulled Amy back with her. "Back, back, back!"
"Okay." The Stone nodded. "We really need to find Rory." The Stone looked at Amy and then the Doctor.
The Time Lord nodded. "We will find him, dear, I promise."
