The Impossible Astronaut
You probably thought the mini-episode was all you would be getting this week, no?
Well, you're wrong! :D I have this chapter as well, sadly I go on holiday for two weeks tomorrow so there will be no updates. I will be updating a ton when I get back, however. I am very eager to share what I have been working on with those of you who are Sherlock fans :)
Have a good week!
-----
The Stone sat in the console room reading Harry Potter again and drinking her mint tea while the Doctor connected wires under the console trying to fix the outer TARDIS shield's invisibility or as the Stone enjoyed to call it 'The TARDIS cloaking device'.
"Doctor it isn't going to work." She told him not looking up from her book.
"it will." He protested before yelping a small spark coming out from under the console.
"I told you to wait until I finished this chapter." She rolled her eyes setting the book down and standing up to join him. "And then I would help."
"You said that three chapters and two cups of mint tea ago!"
"Yes well," She lightly coughed her cheeks becoming a light shade of pink. "It's a good book and nice tea."
"I can do this myself you know." He replied. "What do you think I did when you weren't here?"
"Not used the cloaking device?" She smirked.
"It's not a cloaking device." He rolled his eyes walking up the stairs to join her at the console, hoping that she would now help him. He honestly did need her help. Not thst he would admit that to her.. "You've been reading too much Harry Potter, dear."
"You can never read to much." She pointed at him threateningly. "Especially Harry Potter.
"Of course." He swallowed hard actually a little scared of her now.
"See." She grinned kissing his cheek. "Now if we connect these too..." She said before grinning as the console beeped. "See!" She laughed. "I told you to wait for me." She then went to the doors and opened it frowning when she saw a blue envelope slowly fall to the floor as if it was stuck inside. "How?" She frowned picking it up. They were in space and not only that but deep space how would anything find them out there.
"What is it dear?" The Doctor frowned walking up to her.
"It's an envelope?" She said questioningly handing it to him.
"Is that TARDIS blue?" He frowned looking at it."
"I think so?" She frowned taking the envelope and opening its seal taking out a piece of card. The Doctor frowned once more seeing the number '1' on the back of the envelope as the Stone glanced over what was said on the front. "It's got a map reference on it and a date."
"Do you think someone wants us?"
"But why an envelope?" She said eyeing the card. "You have your psychic paper why not use that?"
"Perhaps it wouldn't work?" He shrugged before taking her hand after shutting the door pulling the lever to make the TARDIS not invisible. The Stone pulled another lever and the TARDIS started to wheeze taking them to America.
---------------------------------------------------------------
"Why are we here." The Stone frowned eyeing the small diner they were sat in before taking the envelope out of her pocket. "Why give us a card in a TARDIS blue envelope."
"And why the number." The Doctor turned the envelope over looking at the number one on the front. "I don't like this Stone." He shook his head taking her hand.
"Neither do I." She sighed. "But whatever is going on this must be the answer here."
"But what..." He said in thought before shaking his head standing up. "I want a straw."
"I'm coming with you." She rolled her eyes. "I left my book on the console and we don't know how long we will have to wait so I might as well read." She then followed him through the door and into the TARDIS
"You know I could get it for you." He rolled his eyes at her.
"Trusting you with my books?" She snorted a laugh picking the book up. "No way." She kissed the Doctor on his cheek as he went in search of the kitchen to find his straw.
The Time Lady grabbed her book and then walked out of the TARDIS before opening the door to the diner. "Oh." The Stone blinked opening the door to see River, Amy and Rory standing there, looking like they had seen a ghost. "Hello."
"This is cold." River shakenly replied. "I thought you were better than this Stone. This is cold."
"People normally say hello..." She frowned looking at them all.
"Ah." The Doctor stepped out his straw in hand. "I see we're not alone then dear."
"No..." She replied slowly, carefully watching the three. "We're not."
"Doctor?" Amy blinked seeing him. "Stone."
"I just popped out to get my special straw." He said holding it up. "It adds more fizz."
"And I wanted to read."
"You're okay." Amy looked between them focusing more so on the Stone than the Doctor. "How can you be okay?"
Slightly frowning the Doctor brought her in for a hug frowning at the Stone who slightly shrugged not understand what was going on. "Hey, of course, we're okay. We're always okay. I'm the King of Okay."
"That's a rubbish title." The Stone shook her head at him.
"Yes, forget that title." He nodded.
"Rory the Roman." The Stone laughed trying to lighten the mood a little seeing the uncomfortable look on the three's faces as she gave him a hug. "I think that's a better title.
"Yes, that's a good title." The Doctor gave Rory a hug. "Hello, Rory."
"River Song." The Stone nodded. "Out of Stormcage, I see."
"What trouble have you got for us this time?" The Doctor raised a brow.
"Doctor." The Stone scolded before glancing at River. "He does have a point though..." Suddenly River slapped the Time Lady across the face making her yelp as the Doctor instantly pulled her back his eyes wide.
"I'm going to assume that's for something undoubtedly stupid..." She winced. "Which slightly concerns me seeing its normally the Doctor who does that.
"Yes, it is." River coldly replied.
"Good. Looking forward to it." The Doctor sarcastically answered tightly holding the Stone.
"I don't understand," Rory said pointing at the Stone who currently had the Doctor now fussing over the cheek River slapped his hand lightly stroking the skin. "How can you be here?" He looked at her curiously. "She said it wasn't possible."
"We were invited." The Stone answered after hitting the back of the Doctors hand, away only make him frown at Rory wondering who he was talking about. "Date, map reference."
"Same as you lot, I assume, otherwise it's a hell of a coincidence."
"River, what's going on?" Amy questioned.
"Amy, ask her what age she is."
"That's a bit personal." The Doctor frowned. "Especially asking my wife."
"Tell her." River looked at the Time Lady. "Tell her what age you are."
"We're both nine hundred and nine."
"Yeah, but you said you were-" Amy started only to quickly get cut off by River.
"So where does that leave us, huh?" River looked at the Time Lords. "Jim the fish? Have we done Jim the fish yet?"
"Who's Jim the fish?" The Doctor asked sounding quite amused while the Stone looked slightly worried. Something was obviously going on. Amy Rory and River obviously knew something they didn't, something dangerous.
"I don't understand." Amy frowned shaking her head.
"Yeah, you do."
"Clearly we don't!" The Doctor loudly interrupted gesturing to himself and the Stone. "What are we all doing here?"
River opened her mouth looking between the Time Lords for a moment before speaking, obviously choosing her words very carefully. "We've been recruited. Something to do with space 1969, and a man called Canton Everett Delaware the third."
"But recruited by who?" The Stone frowned.
"Someone who trusts you more than anybody else in the universe." River replied making the Stone slowly turn to look at the Doctor.
"Me?" The Doctor frowned looking at her. "Stone I was with you when we got the invitation."
"Well, I don't trust anyone more than you, Doctor, you know that."
"Stone." He shook his head cupping her cheeks in his hands. "It wasn't me, I promise you, dear."
"Well, then who was it then?" The Time Lady then looked at River.
"Spoilers."
---------------------------------------------------------------
"1969, that's an easy one!" The Doctor grinned running around the console. "Funny, how some years are easy." He remarked to Amy. "Now, 1482, full of glitches." He gave a curious look to the Stone.
"I told you to stop trying to distract me, Sweetheart." She protested following him around.
"Your fault for teasing me, dear." He grinned. "Now then, Canton Everett Delaware the third. That was his name, yeah? How many of those can there be? Well, three, I suppose." He hummed turning a dial on the console. The Stone closely watched as Amy suddenly went to the stairs to the TARDIS' lower level, River quickly following behind her.
"Rory, is everybody upset at us for some reason?" The Stone questioned. "I'm getting that feeling.
"I'll find out." He replied nodding and leaving the Time Lords alone.
"I don't like it." The Doctor instantly said shaking his head coming to stand in front of the Stone. "Whatever is going on very much involves you dear and it's worrying me."
"It worries me too Doctor." She sighed shaking her head. "It's honestly making me feel a bit sick."
"Sick?" The Doctor looked at her even more worried then before as he took her hand. "But you never get sick?"
"That's what's worrying me."
"Do you want me to do some tests?" He asked. "We're obviously not taking them to 1969, they can all go back to where they came from and we can do some tests before you go off to bed to rest."
"Doctor honestly it's not that bad."
"You being anywhere close to ill is bad enough for me, dear. Tests and then bed we can watch a movie and cuddle if you like." He softly smiled at her tightly hugging her close to him.
"Okay." She slowly nodded. "Just because you're being so nice."
"I'm always nice to you."
"Exactly." She grinned then tilted her head slightly looking through the glass floor. "What are those three up to."
"I don't know." The Doctor murmured before letting the Stone go and kneeling to the floor letting his head dangle upside down over the edge.
"We're going to be extremely clever up here, and there's no one to stand around looking impressed!" He interrupted their conversation. "What's the point in having you all?"
"Doctor be nice." The Stone scolded pulling him back up.
"Yes, dear..." He shook his head as the three made their way back up. "Time isn't a straight line. It's all bumpy wumpy."
"I thought it was wibbly wobbly?" The Stone questioned.
"Either will do." He waved a hand at her. "There's loads of boring stuff like Sundays and Tuesdays and Thursday afternoons."
"Tuesdays." The Stone shivered at the thought. "Horrible day."
"Exactly." The Doctor grinned pointing at her. "But now and then there are Saturdays. Big temporal tipping points when anything's possible."
"Of course the TARDIS can't resist them, like a moth to a flame." The Stone hummed.
"Too much reading." The Doctor called aloud on the opposite side of the console to her.
"It's a simile." She protested poking her head around the time rotor to talk to him. "I'm sure you would have said just the same.
The Doctor opened his mouth to speak before shutting it then opening it again pointing at her. "Fair point." He then moved around the console to stand beside her. "But just like the Stone here the TARDIS, she does ever so much love a party, so we give her 1969 and NASA because that's space in the sixties, and Canton Everett Delaware the third," He then started to type on the typewriter before stopping the Stone tapping the scanner as the three crowded around it. "And this is where she's pointing."
"Washington D.C., April the eighth, 1969." Amy read off. "So why haven't we landed?"
"Because that's not where we're going." The Stone replied.
"Oh." Rory blinked at her. "Where are we going?"
"Home. Well, you two are." He pointed at them. "Off you pop and make babies. And you, Doctor Song, back to prison. And us?" He gestured to himself and the Stone. "We're late for a biplane lesson in 1911. Or it could be knitting." He shrugged.
"Knitting or biplanes." The Stone nodded before tilting her head in thought."Or a roast dinner... I fancy roast potatoes."
"Roast potatoes?" The Doctor questioned.
"I really don't know sweetheart." She shrugged.
"Okay, either of those then." He nodded sitting down one the seat lightly pulling the Stone to lean again him, his hand snaking itself around her waist. "What?" He looked at the three who slowly moved around the console to look at them. "A mysterious summons. You think we're just going to go?"
"Who sent those messages?" The Stone crossed her arms looking at them. "I know you know. I can see it in your faces."
"Don't play games with me." He said shaking his head before he gave them warning looks almost growling through his teeth. "Especially when it involves my wife. Don't ever, ever think you're capable of that."
"You're going to have to trust us this time." River blankly replied.
"Trust you?" The Stone scoffed moving around from the Doctor. "Sure. But, first of all, Doctor River Song, just one thing. Who are you?" River blankly stared at the ginger Time Lady in front of her not looking at all fazed in the current moment.
"We know you're someone from our future, possibly the Stones or just possible mine. We're getting that. But who?"
River didn't reply her eyes flickering between the Time Lords as they both glanced at Amy and Rory standing nervously off to the side. "Okay. Why are you in prison? Who did you kill, hmm?" And you want us to trust you?" The Doctor scoffed his hand moving around the Stone's waist again slightly shifting himself in front of her. "I'm not trusting you anywhere near my wife."
"Trust me." Amy stepped forward gaining their attention.
"Trust us, both of you," Rory added taking Amy's hand.
The Doctor glanced at the Stone who nodded. "Okay." He then stepped closer to them.
"You both have to do this," She looked between them looking nervous as the Stone also stepped forward. "And you can't ask why."
"Are you being threatened?" The Doctor asked looking at Rory for a moment.
"Is someone making you say that?" The Stone asked her companion.
"No." He replied.
"You're lying." The Doctor growled. "Don't lie to my wife."
"We're not lying." Amy swallowed stepping forward.
"Swear to us." He looked between them. "Swear to us on something that matters."
The Time Lords glanced between the humans as Amy opened her mouth. "Fish fingers and custard."
"And mint tea," Rory added
The Doctor gave them a small smile as he took his wife's hand. "Our lives are in your hands, Amelia Pond and Rory Williams." "As soon as this is finished you're going straight to the infirmary." The Doctor telepathically called to the Stone as he walked around the console.
"I'll be fine." She rolled her eyes. "I think it was just how they were acting that made me feel ill."
"But you don't ever get sick."
"We don't normally have our friends looking at us like they had just seen a ghost."
"Fine." He grumbled. "As long as you're feeling okay."
"I'll tell you if anything is wrong, sweetheart."
"So!" The Doctor loudly exclaimed spinning around in front of the scanner. "Canton Everett Delaware the third. Who's he?"
"Ex FBI." River answered. "Got kicked out."
"Why?" The Stone questioned slightly moving the scanner to look at it.
"Six weeks after he left the Bureau, the President contacted him for a private meeting."
"Yeah, 1969." The Doctor nodded. "Who's President?"
"Richard Milhous Nixon. Vietnam, Watergate. There's some good stuff, too."
"Not enough." The Stone frowned.
"Hippie."
"Archaeologist." She countered earning a chuckle and the shake of his head from the Doctor.
"I don't understand what both you have against archaeologists." River shook her head at them.
"We're time travellers." He replied. "That's whats wrong with it." He then threw a lever down before moving to another. "Okay, since we don't know what we're getting into this time, for once we're being discreet. I'm putting the engines on silent."
"You're glad I fixed that last week." The Stone rolled her eyes at him.
"You fixed it?" He frowned. "You didn't fix it I did!" He threw the lever down earning an eye roll from the Stone when a horn blared as he moved around the console.
"Stone what are you doing?"
"Well, you just made the TARDIS anything but discreet."
"I made it silent."
"You made a horn start to blare really loud."
"I've been piloting this TARDIS for around seven hundred years." He pointed at her. "I know what I'm doing dear."
"Clearly." She playfully rolled her eyes at him.
"Okay then. Putting the outer shield on invisible." He then said. "It's a good job I fixed that earlier."
"Was that before or after I helped you?" The Stone chuckled.
"You know." The Doctor said pointing at her. "You're really mean."
"I'm not mean." She shrugged.
"No, you are." He protested. "Everybody thinks you're so kind and lovely but really you're a big meanie."
"Doctor." She shook her head at him. "I don't think I'm that mean."
"I think you are."
"Are you sure?" She questioned raising a brow at him walking towards the Time Lord.
"Well..." He replied when she stepped even closer, her eyes bore into his, causing the room to suddenly feel a little too warm as he swallowed hard. "No."
"Exactly!" She laughed kissing his cheek.
"You're such a tease." He shook his head at her.
"You can turn the TARDIS invisible?" Rory asked looking at the Stone.
"Very nearly." River sighed as the Stone moved the lever back shaking her head after the Doctor turned some very bright lights on.
"Dear?"
"Yes, that was me." She rolled her eyes. "Honestly I'm surprised how you managed without me before."
"I'm not that bad."
"You just shone the lights in the TARDIS Doctor."
"Okay fine." He pouted at her then moved to the scanner. "Now we can't check the scanner. It doesn't work when we're cloaked." He then shook his head kissing the Stones cheek. "Just give us a mo." He then ran to the door and stopped turning around as Amy and Rory went to follow. "Whoa! Whoa, whoa, whoa." he pointed between them. "You lot, wait a moment. We're in the middle of the most powerful city in the most powerful country on Earth. Let's take it slow." He then stepped out of the TARDIS.
"Idiot." The Stone rolled her eyes, shaking her head as she started to fiddle with wires behind the scanner.
"What are you doing?" Amy curiously asked the Time Lady.
"Well he says we can't check the scanner when cloaked." She chuckled shaking her head. "But we really can."
"Bless." River shook her head as the Stone continued with the wires before the TARDIS suddenly jolted to the side. "Every time."
"Don't worry!" They heard the Doctor shout. "It always does that when its cloaked."
The scanner then lit up the Doctor on the floor with a group of the white house guards on top of him. "Stop that!" He cried. "Argh! Oh! Stone, have you got the scanner working yet?"
"Is he really doubting me." She sighed shaking her head.
"Of course not dear!" He shouted. "Stone, make her blue again!"
The Stone sighed pulling the lever and quickly heading to the doors. "Stay here." She told the other three as she slipped past the doors and the guards seeing the Doctor in the president's chair. "Mister President, that child just told you everything you need to know, but you weren't listening. Never mind, though, because the answer's yes." He nodded. "I'll take the case." He grinned. "Fellows, the guns, really? I just walked into the highest security office in the United States and parked a big blue box on the rug. Do you think you can just shoot me?"
"They're Americans!" The Stone shouted quickly making her way to stand beside him as River ran out the TARDIS.
The Doctors eyes widened quickly he pushed the Time Lady behind him. "Don't shoot." He held up his hands just like the others did. "Definitely no shooting."
"Nobody shoot us either," Rory said sighing walking out the TARDIS with his hands up, slightly ducking his head to make himself smaller and less of a target. "Very much not in need of getting shot. Look, we've got our hands up."
"Who the hell are you?" Nixon looked between them.
"Sir, you need to stay back."
"But who are they and what is that box?"
"It's a police box. Can't you read?" The Doctor said seeming to forget the guns pointed at him. "I'm your new undercover agent on loan from Scotland Yard. Codename the Doctor." He nodded then pointed at the Stone. "This is my wife. Codename the Stone and these are our top operatives, the Legs, the Nose, and Mrs Robinson."
The Stone snorted before disguised it as a cough giving the Doctor a scolding look.
"Yes dear." He mumbled not even needing to hear her say it.
"Who are you?"
"Nah, boring question." The Doctor shook his head. "Who's phoning you? That's interesting. Because Canton Three is right." He pointed at the man. "That was definitely a girl's voice, which means there's only one place in America she can be phoning from."
"Where?"
"Do not engage with the intruder, Mister Delaware."
"You heard everything I heard." The Doctor said to them. "It's simple enough. Give me five minutes, my wife and I will explain. On the other hand, lay a finger on me, my wife or our friends, and you'll never, ever know."
"How did you get it in here?" Canton asked. "I mean, you didn't carry it in."
"Clever, eh?" The Stone grinned.
"Love it."
"Do not compliment the intruders."
"Five minutes?" He looked between the Time Lords
"Five." The Doctor repeated.
"Mister President, that man and woman are a clear and present danger to-"
"Mister President, that man walked in here with a big blue box, his wife and three of his friends, and that's the man he walked past." Canton interrupted nodding at the other. "One of them's worth listening to. I say we give then five minutes. See if they deliver."
"Thanks, Canton."
"If he doesn't, I'll shoot them both myself."
"Not so thanks." The Doctor mumbled taking the Stones hand in his.
"Sir, I cannot recommend-"
"Shut up, Peterson!" Vixon ordered. "All right, five minutes."
The Doctor nodded sitting back in the president's chair resting his hands on the table before pressing buttons. "I'm going to need a SWAT team, ready to mobilise. Street level maps covering all of Florida. A pot of coffee, twelve Jammie Dodgers and a fez."
"And some mint tea."
"Yes, we also need mint tea. My wife's not feeling that well." He pulled her a little closer remembering his worries.
"Get him his maps and some mint tea," Canton ordered.
