Chapter 4

The afternoon passed by quickly, and I fell asleep. The next morning, I saw Jay, poking around my room. I shut my eyes half way, so he wouldn't know I'm asleep. "Darn... I really wanted to see it. Well, C.J. didn't want me to use it for a reason," Jay sighed, and left the room. Maybe he really just did want to see how to use it, I thought. I sighed. I took a bath last night, so I decided not to take a bath today. I undressed, and cleaned my clothes. I put on a yellow t-shirt and black shorts. I fixed up my hair, into a braided bun. I went to the dinning room, and grabbed some berry soup. The berries dotted the dark liquid around them. I sat at a table where Ashley, Greyson, Webeni, and a guard named Hencio were. "Hey guys," I said, while sitting down. "Hey C.J. How you feel'in?" Hencio asked. "Good. I've healed quite a bit," I answer. Hencio nodded. "I heard the new boy -Jay, got some of these berries. I bet he's gonna be a gatherer," Webeni said, striking up conversation. Me and Greyson glanced at each other. "We have a bad feeling about that kid," Greyson said, so I could have time to eat, "He's too... He's too likeable. It seems like he just doesn't have a flaw." Me and Ashley nodded our heads in agreement, while stuffing our faces with berries, and the sweet, dark liquid. "It's true, he seems a bit perfect. More than a normal person," Ashley added, apparently already finished a couple of sips of soup. "I don't care, nice or not, the boy picks some good berries," I mumbled, still stuffing my face. The whole table laughed, expect me because I was eating. We talked and ate, and soon enough, I was finished. "Bye guys," I said and left. I walked over to the portal where a different guard stood. "Who are you?" he demanded. "C.J. I should be asking you who you are. The Hope didn't get a new guard," I say and picked up a sword that was hanging up on the wall. I twisted it in my hand, flipping back and forth. "C.J.... Doesn't ring a bell, and until it does," the man picked up a gun, "you will not get past me, nor know my name." "I'm the freaking leader and founder of The Hope! Now move out of my way!" I yelled. The mans eyes widened. "I'm so s-sorry m-miss," he shuttered. He moved and I typed in the code. I walked in, and the door slammed behind me. Geez, I thought, new people. Probably just... Rude. Yes rude... I stared down at the portal. The gray looked mysterious but amazing at the same time. I walked over to it and sat on the edge. "Daddy," I whispered quietly to myself, "I miss you..." My mind drifted of, and I somehow came to the song that Greyson sang to me. "Close your eyes, there's always tomorrow," I sang, "New hope. New song. New hope for us all..." A tear ran down my left cheek. I heard the door open, but I didn't dare look behind me. "Who is it?" I called instead. The door shut with a bang. "I heard your song. It's beautiful," a voice said. I got up, and turned around. In front of me stood Jay, his hair glimmered in the little light, from the portal. "I know you were in my room I said, as I walked over to the door. "Oh... I came into here to say sorry," Jay sighed. "How'd you know what the pad number is?" I asked. Jay laughed, "That new guard. I asked him where you were and he typed in the code." "Great," I whispered to where only I could hear it. I punched in the code to get out and pointed outside the door. "Out," I ordered. We walked out, and I shot the guard a glance. A mad glance. The kind that makes you fiddle with something just to look away. I sighed and climbed up, to the surface. I noticed a nearby bush, moving. I walked over to it, and there sat a little puppy. It was small -maybe two weeks old?- and shaking. I picked it up. It's face was brown, it's body black with white spots, and it's tail and feet brown, like its face. "Shh," I said in a hushed voice. I carried it back underground. I took it to my room and sat it down in the bathtub. It sat there, shaking. "It's hungry," I whispered. I went back above ground, with a sword this time. I killed a turkey and went back underground. I fed the poor thing, and apparently it was starving. I ate a leg also. You can't blame me, I was hungry! "Now, how about a name?" I asked the dog, who was now on my bed, playing with a turkey bone. "How about... Dawn?" I asked. The dog stopped, and seemed to shake it's head. "Sparkle?" No. "Princess?" No. "Carssea?" No. "Midnight?" Yes. The dog ran over to me, wagging it's tail. "Midnight it is," I giggled. I scooped up the pup, and went into a vets room. "Hey Unios," I say. "Oh, C.J.! What a surprise! And who is this?" Unios asked, petting Midnight. Unios is a vet, so if we find poor animals, we take them to him so they can heal. "This is Midnight. Say hi Midnight!" I replied. I picked up Midnights paw and made her wave. "Aww," Unios let out, "So, what do you want me to do?" "Is Midnight a boy or girl?" I ask. Unios picked up Midnight and looked at her. "Girl, I do believe," he replied after a minute. Unios handed back Midnight to me. "Thanks," I said and left. I met Greyson and Ashley on my way back to my room. "Aw, who's this little ball of fur?" Ashley said in a baby voice. "Midnight," I answer, "Hey guys can you tell everyone there's gonna be a meeting after breakfast tomorrow?" "Sure," they say at the same time. We laughed. "Good night!" I say and make my leave.
