1. Heirlooms
A gold ring which was passed down turned out to be not so ordinary. In the morning, I awoke, to a bright light, to find the ring spinning within the middle of the dormitory. Inside was an engraved message. I wasn't sure how it moved from my hand to the ground but I was going to figure it out.
I dump out my pillow from its protective case. Then, using the case as a glove, I slam the ring so it stopped spinning and picked it up. I was the only one remaining in the dormitory so thankfully it didn't disturb anyone. That wasn't the issue. The issue was that a family heirloom wasn't what it seemed to be.
All I could say was. "Huh."
The golden light was no longer visible. The engraved message was gone too. All of this was rather stranger, no one was going to believe me without proof. I didn't have anything to prove this actually happened as I didn't care for muggle objects. All I had to do was solve this mysterious puzzle without drawing any attention to myself, which was going to be extremely difficult.
I hid the ring in my pocket by folding the pillow case into a small square, and tying it with a hair bobble. It was enough for now.
I pray that it doesn't go anywhere, remaining still while I solve its puzzle.
Everyone was down in the Great Hall for breakfast which I nearly missed. Luckily, mystery magic, was like my personal alarm clock so I was too down about it. My friends are in the middle of the table like always as that was our designated place. I rub my eyes clearly more tired than normal.
"Hey Weaslette!" Shouts Malfoy. "Had a shower today?."
I turn around and give him the middle finger using both hands and take my seat. Recently, Malfoy was more talkative towards me since we've been competing in who is more sassier than who. I'm guessing that none of my other siblings was paying much attention to him, because it was old news at this point.
"I don't know why you give him the time," comments Hermione, completing summer homework.
I've always lover Hermione and look forward to hanging out with herself and my sister every summer. As it seemed official she was bound to marry one of our brothers.
"He's bored, I'm bored," I explain. "He can be quite funny at times."
"Seriously Adora? You're actually complimenting him?" Asks Ginny, my younger sister. "He's awful and his dad is what got me cursed, remember!"
I shudder, remembering Pettigrew living rent free in our home for years. "We've all gotten annoyed so why not make some fun of it."
"Complimenting Malfoy? Who?" Says Ron, with a mouthful of chewed up sausage. "Don't tell me it was Adora."
Harry chimes in without being asked to. "Not this again!"
"No one asked you scarface," I argued, being the only one who didn't like him. "I wasn't complimenting him anyway."
Ginny defended her future husband. "Hey! Be nice!"
Harry flashed her a sheepish smile. And I just roll my eyes.
I picked out a couple of French toasts, bacon, and made a sandwich, eating it in peace before the storm follows. All I could do was be quiet because I didn't want to argue with my family.
There was no way I was going to be able to be nice to Potter. Not when, he uses our home, as if it's some hotel that he doesn't have to pay for. It wasn't acceptable. I didn't understand why everyone bowed down to him like he runs the world.
I eavesdropped on the Slytherin tables conversations.
"Did we have homework?" Asked Matteo Riddle. "I can't remember if I did it or not."
"Who cares your Voldemort's son, he can just kill the Professor," joked Pansy.
Pansy Parkinson seemed like the only normal Slytherin these days; if I could, I would be friends with her. She's a lot of fun.
"Why do you keep bothering Weaslette?" Asks Pansy.
"She's bored, I'm bored."
He does eavesdrop! That means he heard my funny comment and that's not okay. I didn't want to give him free ammo of what he can talk to me about in our shared class. I'm never going to hear the end of it, am I? I don't know why I got myself into to these situations especially around people I didn't like. It's almost like I was handing them things to mock me about on a silver platter.
There was no way I was going to give any of this away to my family. Because, all I'd get in return, is someone saying 'I told you so,' and having a massive ego boost from it. I wasn't sad by it just unsure of why Malfoy was really giving me this attention, it wasn't as if we are friends, or cared about each other. He hates my family. And I hate his family.
And that's just that.
After our first class was over, it reminded me about the heirloom, and I wait behind pretending to take ages to pack up my equipment. I said goodbye to my friends and said I was going to meet them in the next class.
Professor Snape was the only one who was left as it was Potions class. And so, when he realised I was still here, he grumbled, seemingly not bothered to have a chat with someone like me.
"Make it short, Miss. Weasley," warned Snape.
I root through my pocket and picked out the package, which kept me safe from any magical elements of the heirloom. The package was placed on Snape's desk right in the middle of it. And slowly, I open the string, keeping the pillowcase in place and revealed the ring inside. That's when I pushed it forward and I stepped back trying to protect myself.
"I received this heirloom, from my mother," I said. "This morning it woke me up and I believe it's cursed."
Snape used his wand to prod the gold object, only then, after no reaction, he slid his wand underneath and hung it at the end of it. It didn't touch anything other than the wood.
"How is it cursed?" Asked Snape. "Or is it just an assumption? Because you're lacking attention from anybody else."
Rude.
"It was glowing brightly in the middle of my dormitory, waking me up. It had an engraved message on the inside of the band. However, when I picked it up, with the pillow case, the message disappeared and so did the light."
Snape chimed in his low, moody voice. "Have you upset anyone?"
I didn't understand what he meant. "Come again?"
"Malfoy, maybe but I don't think he's smart enough to curse me," I snarked, quite proud of my comment.
"Malfoy wouldn't give you the time of day, don't flatter yourself."
You'd be surprised, Professor.
"You haven't touched this, have you?"
I stopped myself from saying anything sarcastic.
"Yes, it's an heirloom."
"That was rather low."
"You don't need to ——"
Snape cut in and stopped me. "Do you want my help? Or not?"
"I did go to you, didn't I?"
The ring was placed back down on the desk after a throughout observation. It was left there. And, when I tried to get it, my hand was swatted, as a way to stop me from getting my jewellery. I didn't get why I wasn't allowed to take it with me and then just drop it off later on.
"It's cursed. Do not be stupid and touch it unless you want to be in the hospital wing."
That was me told. Professor Snape found a scrap piece of parchment, writing slowly, and clearly, so his writing could be read. My name was scribbled somewhere in the middle of it. For some reason, I thought, I was going to have a week of detention, for being late but I wasn't going to have to worry now.
I'll just have to keep this curse a secret for as long as I could.
