Ch. 1 - The Preface

Hill Valley High School buzzed with the usual energy of a Friday afternoon. Students were eager for the weekend, with laughter and chatter filling the hallways. Among them was Isabelle Carter, a beautiful young teen with long, wavy brown hair cascading over her shoulders and sapphire blue eyes that seemed to hold a world of untold stories. Her fair skin contrasted sharply with the dark thoughts that sometimes clouded her mind.

Isabelle walked towards her locker, her steps light and purposeful. She wore a simple outfit—jeans and a fitted t-shirt—that, despite its simplicity, highlighted her natural beauty. Yet, Isabelle didn't see herself that way. The words of her foster parents echoed in her mind, a cruel reminder of their disdain. "You're ugly, Isabelle. That's why your parents left you." Those words had been her constant companion, a shadow that followed her everywhere.

Opening her locker, she glanced at the heart-shaped necklace around her neck. It was a gift from her biological mother, the only tangible connection she had to a past she barely remembered. Her mother's parting words played in her head, "Open this only when you truly need it, Isabelle." She had never dared to open it, fearing what it might reveal or the memories it might unlock.

"Hey, Isabelle!" A familiar voice pulled her from her thoughts. She turned to see her best friend, Marty McFly, approaching with his usual infectious grin.

"Hey, Marty," she replied, smiling back. Marty had been her rock, the one person who made her feel like she belonged. They had been friends since kindergarten, and their bond grew stronger over the years.

"How was your day?" Marty asked, leaning against the lockers.

"Same old, same old," Isabelle said with a shrug. "Just trying to survive high school. You?"

"Mrs. Kowalski gave us another surprise quiz in history. I'm pretty sure I flunked it," Marty said, rolling his eyes.

Isabelle laughed. "You'll be fine."

Their conversation was interrupted by the school bell ringing, signaling the end of the day. Students poured out of classrooms, eager to start their weekend.

As they left the school building, Isabelle couldn't help but reflect on her life. Growing up in the foster care system had been tough. She had moved from one foster home to another, never quite finding a place where she felt truly accepted. Marty and the heart-shaped necklace around her neck were the only constant in her life.

As Isabelle and Marty headed to Marty's place, they stopped by a worn, mysterious manor. Many teenagers in town believed the manor was haunted. Marty found it creepy. However, Isabelle felt a strange connection but kept it to herself.

When they arrived at the McFly residence, Marty's mother, Lorraine, greeted them and said dinner was ready.

Isabelle warmly greeted Lorraine. She had always liked Lorraine since the older woman treated her like a second daughter.

Marty's siblings, Dave and Linda, greeted Isabelle warmly, setting up the dining table.

Isabelle had always loved the McFly family. But she knew they weren't perfect.

Lorraine and George married on December 7, 1958, and moved into Lyon Estates, where they had three kids: Dave in 1963, Linda in 1966, and Marty in 1968. By 1985, Lorraine was depressed at how her husband could not stand up for her or himself in front of people like their childhood bully, Buford 'Biff' Tannen.

Yet, despite everything, Isabelle had hope. Hope that one day she would understand the secrets of her past, hope that she would find her place in the world, and hope that, maybe, just maybe, she was more beautiful and worthy than she had ever been led to believe.

The aroma of roast chicken filled the McFly dining room as the family gathered around the table. Isabelle sat between Marty and Linda, the familiar warmth of the McFly household a welcome contrast to her own foster home. Lorraine brought over a dish of mashed potatoes, smiling warmly at Isabelle.

"Help yourself, Isabelle," Lorraine said, placing the dish on the table.

"Thank you, Mrs. McFly," Isabelle replied, returning the smile.

As they began to serve themselves, the conversation was light and casual. Dave talked about his day at work, and Linda shared stories about her friends at college. Isabelle listened, enjoying the sense of normalcy.

"So, Isabelle," Lorraine said, turning to her, "how was school today?"

"It was good, Mrs. McFly. It was just the usual. Marty and I had a surprise quiz in history, which I think we both flunked," Isabelle said with a chuckle, glancing at Marty, who grinned back.

A crashing sound grabbed Isabelle and the family's attention. Soon, footsteps approached, and they heard a knocking sound. Isabelle could see Lorraine and George exchanging a worried glance.

Marty was getting annoyed because the knocking was turning into a pounding. He got up and approached the door, unlocking it and opening it.

Biff Tannen barged in, his face red with anger. George's expression immediately changed to one of nervous apprehension.

Isabelle could sense the tension rising in the house. She looked at Biff and wondered why he always picked on Marty's father.

"Biff, what are you doing here?" George asked, his voice trembling slightly.

Biff strode into the dining room, ignoring the question. Marty closes the door and follows behind him. "Hey, McFly, what are you gonna do about my car?" he demanded, pointing a finger at George.

Isabelle raised an eyebrow, looking confused. "What's going on?" She asked.

Biff glanced at Isabelle. Since she wasn't a McFly, Biff spoke in a somewhat friendlier voice. "His car had a blind spot that was shining. I was driving, minding my own business, and bam! I crashed. My suit is ruined because I spilled beer all over myself." He pointed to his wet suit. He then turned and glared at George. "You're gonna pay for my dry cleaning, McFly!"

George's face paled, and he stammered, "Biff, I... I don't understand. How could you wreck the car?"

Biff rolled his eyes. "Because of your fucking blind spot, McFly! You're paying for my suit, or you'll be sorry."

Marty shook, his fists clenched. "Biff, this isn't right. You wrecked the car because you were drinking and driving!"

Biff turned his glare to Marty. "Stay out of this, McFly Jr. This is between me and your old man."

Isabelle had enough. She wanted to have a peaceful dinner. "Mr. Tannen!" she stood and faced Biff. "Mr. McFly's car was parked when Marty and I arrived from school. Marty is right; you were drinking and driving, and you hit Mr. McFly's car. I suggest you leave, or we will press charges." She wrapped her arms underneath her chest, looking at him sternly.

Biff shook and glared at Isabelle and then at George. "This isn't over, McFly," he muttered before storming out of the house and slamming the door behind him.

The room was silent for a moment. George sank back into his chair, looking defeated. Lorraine placed a comforting hand on his shoulder while Marty and Isabelle exchanged worried glances.

"Are you okay, Mr. McFly?" Isabelle asked gently.

George nodded, though he looked anything but okay. "I'll be fine, Isabelle. Thank you for standing up for me."

Dave approaches the window and pulls the curtains to the side, seeing his father's wrecked car. "What's going to happen now? Dad doesn't have a car to go to work." He turns to look at his family.

"Dad, when are you going to stand up to Biff?" Marty asked, looking annoyed. "You always let him take advantage of you and get away with it," he glared.

"He's my supervisor," George mutters.

"Supervisor, my ass! I can't believe I am related to you! I wish you weren't my father!" Marty shouts.

"Marty!" Lorraine shouts, glaring at Marty. Meanwhile, Isabelle looked at Marty with concern.

"I'm going for a walk." Marty turns and walks out of the house, closing the door behind him.

"Marty!" Lorraine calls out again, looking stressed.

"It's okay, Mrs. McFly. I'll go talk to him." Isabelle turns and walks out of the house, closing the door behind her.

"I'm such a horrible father." George sighed.

Lorraine sighed, looking at her two eldest children and then at her husband with concern. "George, it's okay. We'll figure this out. Together."

Isabelle hurried out of the McFly house, the cool evening air wrapping around her as she tried to catch up with Marty. He was halfway down the block, his hands shoved deep into his pockets, his shoulders hunched.

"Marty, wait up!" she called, picking up her pace.

Marty slowed but didn't stop. Isabelle finally caught up to him, her breath coming in short puffs. "Marty, what was that back there?" she asked, her voice gentle but firm.

Marty stopped and turned to face her, his expression anger and frustration. "I just... I couldn't take it anymore, Isabelle. Watching my dad let Biff walk all over him it's... it's infuriating!"

"I understand that, but shouting at your dad like that isn't going to help. He's already dealing with enough," Isabelle said, her eyes searching his.

Marty sighed and ran a hand through his hair, looking away. "I know. I know, okay? I just... I had a terrible day."

Isabelle frowned. "What happened?"

Marty hesitated, his eyes darting around as if looking for an escape. Finally, he sighed and looked down at his feet. "My band... we failed our music audition today. I haven't told anyone, not even Jennifer. And now this with Biff... I feel like everything is falling apart."

Isabelle felt sympathy for her friend. "Marty, I'm so sorry. I know how much that audition meant to you."

Marty looked up, his eyes filled with frustration and fear. "I just... I don't want to end up like my parents, Isabelle. My dad can't stand up for himself, and my mom... she's so unhappy. What if I become like them?"

Isabelle reached out and placed a comforting hand on Marty's arm. "You won't, Marty. You're different. You have dreams and ambitions and are not afraid to go after them. One failed audition doesn't define you."

Marty shook his head. "What if it does? What if I'm destined to fail, just like my dad?"

Isabelle stepped closer, her voice firm but kind. "Marty, listen to me. You are not your dad. You have the power to change your future. And you're not alone. You have Jennifer, your family, and you have me. We believe in you."

Marty looked at her, his expression softening. "Thanks, Isabelle. I just... I don't know what I'd do without you."

She smiled. "If you are curious why your father fears Biff so much or why your mom is sad about the whole thing. I can take you to someone to help you figure it out."

Marty looked at Isabelle with a conflicted gaze. " Are you suggesting I talk to a shrink?" He asked.

" No, Silly. He's a Scientist. No one knows this, but I have been working with a Scientist as his assistant for a year now. He's cool despite being a bit wonky." Isabelle giggled.

Marty looked at Isabelle with concern but agreed. " Alright. Show me this, Scientist."

" Follow me," Isabelle hugged Marty's arm and started to escort him to the Twin Pines mall, where her eccentric scientist friend, Emmett 'Doc' Brown, had promised to meet for an experiment.
