Chapter Sixteen - Running and Hiding
"Get down" I dived down as a lazer bolt was shot into the Tardis. The door slammed shut and I jumped to my feet. We had gotten in trouble again with some nasty aliens who wanted mine and Dad's life force, well mainly Dad's since I wasn't a full TimeLord. They could see through the bi damper, they were that...whatever.
"Did they see you?" Dad questioned Martha and I
"No" I gave a clear answer Martha didn't.
"I Don't know." I panted trying to catch my breath
"Martha, it's important did they see your face?" He questioned still holding us.
"No, they couldn't have." she replied ad he let go.
"Right off we go then." He stripped his coat and set about getting us the hell out of here. Alarms started blaring and he pulled the screen round.
"Ah! They're following us."
"How can they do that, you've got a time machine?" Martha questioned
"Stolen technology. They've got a time agent's vortex manipulator. They can follow us wherever we go. Right across the universe. They're never gonna stop." he breathed scratching his head.
"So what do we do?" I asked he said nothing.
"Dad!" he looked at me "What do we do?"
"We'll have to do it?" I shook my head no idea what he was talking about
"Do what?"
"Martha, you trust us right?" Dad asked
"Of course I do." She replied,Dad ducks down to get something.
"Cause it all depends on you."
"What does? What am i supposed to do?" he brings up two watches and showed them to the two of us. I was still clueless even though I had the feeling I wasn't going to like what he was going to suggest.
"Take these watches. Because our lives depend upon it. These watches Martha. These watches are..."
-3rd Person-
John Smith wakes up from yet another dream and takes in his surrounding before sitting up in his bead. There was a knock on the door.
"Come in." He answers. Martha dressed in a maid uniform entered with a tray of breakfast.
"Oh pardon me Mr Smith, you're not dressed yet. I can come back later." She turns to leave as Mr Smith grabs his robe and slips it on, standing up.
"No, it's alright. It's alright, put it down." She turns back and places down the tray.
"I was um..." John trailed off "Sorry, sorry." he says and Martha begins to open up the curtains.
"Sometimes i have these extraordinary dreams."
"What about, Sir?" Martha asks going to open more curtains.
"I dream i'm this....adventurer. This daredevil. Madman...The Doctor i'm called. And last night I dreamt that you were there, and my niece as my companions."
"A teacher and a house maid, sir? That's impossible?" She denied
"I'm a man from another world you know" He moves over to the fireplace
"Well then it can't bee true because there is no such thing." She started pouring out the morning tea for him that accompanied his breakfast.
"This thing, the watch...." Martha looks at him holding it with a knowing and a glimmer of hope. He puts it back down. "It's funny how dreams slip away. But i do remember one thing, it all took place in the future. In the year of our Lord 2007" Martha smiled
"I can prove that wrong for you sir. Here's the morning paper. It's Monday November 10th, 1913 and you're completely human sir. As human as they come." She told him with a saddened look.
Humm that's me, completely human." He smiled
"As for you niece, sir. Miss Catherine will be arriving this morning." John smiled a little, happy at the news.
"Jolly good, yes."
"The Headmaster has had me set up a guest room, for her next door to yours." John nodded.
-Catherine-
"Miss Catherine." Jeeves my butler held out his hand and it took it. Stepping out and under the umbrella I looked around. So this is where my dear Uncle John, resides.
"Thank you Jeeves." I was escorted inside and too the Headmaster's office. there was a knock and I was told to enter.
"Ah, Miss Smith i presume."
"Yes, Mr Roecastle. It's a pleasure to meet them man who gave my dear uncle a job that he adores." He smiled as I at leas made a good first impression. I never hurt to make one of those.
"Please sit." I did so. and he took the seat.
"Your Uncle informs me that you wish to stay here. I must say it is unorthodox." I gave him a gentle smile and nodded slightly
"My apologies, my guardian's however, are insistent that I stay with him while they are away. I also they have hope I might find a husband in one of the boys you educate here so finely." he hummed thinking it over, I was from a respectable family and if the beginnings of a match happened to be made there would be some kind of favour upon him.
"Of course. However unorthodox it may be we have made and exception. A room next to your Uncle's had been arranged." He informed me and I smiled gratefully.
"Thank you. I must admit that my curiosity has peeked on how my education differs from what and how you teach here." I admired glancing around. I was no stranger that the other sex were taught more things than us females, I found it ridiculous but kept my options to myself.
"Worry not, for you will have a tour of the school. Shall i show you too your Uncle?"
"If you would b so kind." He held out his arm and escorted me to my father's class. The bell rung signifying the end of lesson. Boys rushed out past me and we waited till it was all clear.
"Mr Smith, your guest." I smiled seeing my Uncle.
"Uncle." I chimed, he was a sight for sore eyes. I had missed him more than I had realised until that moment. He returned the happiness and rested his book down on his desk.
"Catherine, how wonderful you look." I turned to Mr Roecastle.
"Thank you ever so much, for your hospitality." He bowed slightly and left us. My Uncle embraced me and i felt safe and at home. I felt more safe and at ease with him than in my own house.
"It is so good to see you. How do you fair?" He asked
"Quite good. Yourself."
"Yes, Yes I manage." I beamed at him I had not seen him in two months when he left me in care of guardians. "Shall i escort you to your rooms, you look tired." his hand trailed across my face in concern.
"Thank you, Uncle." We left the classroom and walked past Martha. I simply adored Martha, she taught me never to back down on my beliefs, even though it would take time for such things to come to fruition.
"Morning, Sir. Miss Catherine. Nice to see you again."
"Morning Martha." I smile at the young maid who has been in my family's service for years. She used to sneek me in treats when I was younger and stayed with my grandparents. Through right now she was working with a fellow maid scrubbing the floors of the school.
"Yes, Hi." My Uncle says of handily as he takes me up the stairs. He leads me to my rooms and we stop outside.
"My room is right next door if you need anything. But Martha and other housemaids are available to you. should you need anything." he stated holding my arms.
"Thank you Uncle John." He kissed my head and i entered my rooms. I looked round it was quaint enough. I sat on the bed and did the unlady thing and simply just took my shoes off and fell asleep.
"Miss Catherine. Miss Catherine." I was shaken awake by Martha.
"Martha, what's wrong?" I mumbled groggily and sat up rubbing my eyes to clear away the fog.
"It's Mr Smith he's fallen down the stairs." She huffed, that news defiantly woke me up quickly I stood up and we ran into my Uncle's room.
"Is he alright?" We asked running in.
"Excuse me Martha and friend. It's hardly good form to enter a master's study without knocking." the matron scolded us which made the worst first impression.
"Sorry right yeah." She mockingly says and knocks on the door
"Excuse me. One: i'm no friend I'm his niece. Two: I was told his was hurt so I was worried. Three: you maybe older in age matron but you are not my superior. And lastly She is with me so I say Martha does have the right!" There was a long pause.
"Is he alright?" Martha asks breaking the silence
"I was told you fell down the stairs, really Uncle John." I added "It seems you still more clumsy than I. Are you okay?" I rambled kneeling in front of him and taking his hand.
"It was just a tumble, that's all." he assured me tapping my hand.
"Have you checked for concussion?" Martha asked
"I have. And I dare say I know a lot more about it than you." I rose back up, offended for my friend
"Why you..." I took a step forward. This woman was rude and infuriating. Martha may be a maid but she is a lifelong friend and servant of the family. Anyone rude to her is in good need of a slap, that what I say.
"Miss Catherine." I stopped at my good friends voice. Sitting down i tried to regain some composure. "Of course. I'll just tidy you're things."
"I was just telling Nurse Redfern, Matron about my dreams. They are quite remarkable tales. I keep imagining that i'm someone else and that i'm hiding." I sat up more because they sounded like the dreams I had.
"Hiding in what way?" Matron asks
"They're almost every night and this is going to sound silly."
"Tell me."
"No, may i have a guess?" They look at me. "You have two hearts. You have the ability to heal oneself from many an accident." I theorised
"Yes, quite often." He nodded
"I have those kinds of dreams too." He was about to say something when the Matron interrupted.
"Well i can be the judge of that. Let's find out." She took her stethoscope and listened.
"I can confirm just one heart singular." she chimed, I personally still wanted to slap her or throw her out of a window but I kept my composure for the sake of my friend and Uncle.
"I have um. I have written down some of these dreams in the form of fiction. Not that it would be of any interest." Uncle John mentioned to the woman.
"I'd be very interested"
"Yeah? Well..." he stood up and retrieved a book. "I've never actually shown it to anyone before..." Uncle John handed her the book and I stood up.
"Journal of Impossible things." She flicked through. "Such creatures, you have quite the imagination." it seems we both do, though mine was in the form of sketches and paintings.
"Oh, It's become quite the hobby."
"Wonderful, I see you have an eye for the pretty girls." I saw a familiar face in my dreams, a friend
"Oh, no, no. She's just and invention. This character Rose. I call her Rose. She seems to disappear later on." he answered and his demeanour changed slightly.
"You're in here too." She looked at me and I folded my arms
"Yes, in my stories, my niece is actually my daughter. Not surprising i've watched her grow." I smiled at him. The feeling was reversed, despite the fact he was my uncle he always felt more like a father.
"Oh that's the box, the blue box, that's always there. Like a magic carpet. This fun little box that transports me to far away places." I walk around his study
"Like a door way." I scoff and look at Martha who gives me a secret smile. I think she is amused of my dislike for this woman.
"I always wonder how magical life would be if stories like this were true." okay I had quite enough of her.
"If only."
"If you wouldn't mind I would like some time with my Uncle." They turned to me "Alone." I raised a smile, trying to seem innocent and sweet.
"Of course." They exchanged a few words and she left.
"I must say that was not very good spirited of you Catherine."
"I would apologise but you taught me never to lie. I have no idea as to why you would be sweet on a woman who is rude to people you've know far longer than her." I sat down once again. He sighed and went to his desk.
