Chapter Eight - Lavender Lawns

I sat in the back with Luke as Sarah Jane drove the four of us to lavender lawns, to see Mrs Randall our old next door neighbour.

"Our Nan and Mrs Randall go way back. She used to live door till her old fella died. Nan says there's no way Mrs Randall see's things or makes things up." Clyde said as we arrived.

"And it's not just her that's been scared by this ghostly nun? Other residents have seen it too." Sarah Jane asked

"Yeah" i leant forwards "Always at night, in their room."

-

"Nora Connelly saw her first. She'd been to the loo. Oh dreadful trouble she has with her water works. Three or four times every night" Clyde and I share a disgusted look as we were being nosy round the room.

"She comes out of the bathroom and there she is. The nun, by her chest of drawers." Mrs Randall held up her cup and i reached out to take it and somewhere.

"What happened?" Sarah Jane wondered

"She fainted clean away like a school girl. No constitution at all. Surprised the amount of times she's been married.  Since then most of us have seen her. Them that's not too ga-ga not to notice." I went over to Luke followed by Clyde.

"Well Thank You Mrs Randall." Sarah Jane chimed towards the elderly woman.

"So, will there be a photographer?" Mrs R asked "You wouldn't think it but I was in all the papers once. Miss Ealing 1951." I covered my mouth as i looked at her then back at the others. Clyde was grossed out and Luke found it amusing.

"Well i will have to talk to the manager first"

"While you do that, i've got a few little jobs for Clyde and Kate to do." Sarah Jane stood up as i sighed "Your Grandma said you wouldn't mind." i pulled my sweetest smile

"Of course not Mrs Randall" the other left.

"Such a sweet girl, Carla had brought you both up nice and well." We did some jobs before we were let free.

"Why is it old people want you to do everything for them? Turn the mattress over, move things around on the top shelf. Take that spider out of the bath. Came here looking for spooks not jobs." I rolled my eyes at his complaining.

"Everyone get's old Clyde even you."

"Not me. The way technology is moving by the time i'm 40 I can get my brain put into a robot and live forever." i shoved him and slapped his head. Luke came up meeting us at there car.

"Where have you been?" I asked

"Just looking around" he replied i shrugged

"So is this place haunted or what?" i asked

"I don't know. But there is something about here i don't like." Luke let me get in first  then i pulled the chair back and sat next to my brother.

----

After several games of thumb war and name calling we arrived back at Sarah Janes house.

"Mr Smith, i need you." Mr Smith played his fanfair music as he opened up. I sat down on the steps and kicked my feet out and relaxed on my hands.

"Yes Sarah Jane, what can i do for you?"

"The Lavender Lawns rest home is apparently being haunted by a nun. I need you to access central land registry database. See if there is anything to support the possibility

"Of a haunting?" he wondered, for a computer he didn't sound convinced, in fact he sounded like he had an opinion.

"Just run the check." she replied

"Very well"

"Doesn't Mr Smith believe in ghosts?" Clyde asked

"Not as such and neither do I." Sarah Jane answered with her arms folded moving around the room, waiting for Mr Smith to answer her request.

"There is no record of any past ecclesiastical building on the site of Lavender lawns."

"So there is no obvious reason for the home to be haunted by a nun?" she came back down and I stood up.

"I assume by haunting you mean the projections of energies imprinted on a psychic assimilating matter." Mr Smith clarified

"Obviously." she replied.

"Come again?" he and Clyde asked

"Events get recorded on their surroundings then get played back" I explained to him "Everything around us has the ability to absorb the energy arounds us, it's theorised that given the right circumstances, the times of the past can play back and give the illusion of a haunting. Like playing a song at a birthday party then hearing it again some time later."

"Sarah Jane are you aware that Luke has brought an unidentified element of alien technology." we all looked at him.

"what?"

" Whoa, Luke. No way did that come off the shopping channel." Clyde commented

"Give it to me Luke." Sarah Jane held her hand out and Luke handed it over.

"One of the residents Mrs Nelson- Stanley gave it to me. She said I had to keep it a secret.  I'm sorry. Was that wrong?" he questioned still trying to learn the ways of human interactions.

"I don't know, Mr Smith, is it safe." Sarah Jane gave it to him and he analysed it.

"Insufficient data. I'd like to carry out a detailed analysis." Just then the door slammed and I looked back.

"Do you mind there is a lot of sensitive equipment in here." Sarah Jane snipped at It was Maria, she looked upset.

"Sorry. So what's going on."

"Some old biddy's given Luke an alien gizmo." Clyde answered

"She said the nun wasn't a ghost but is looking for the talisman."

"I'd better go talk to Mrs Nelson Stanley. Do you want to come with me?" she asked Maria. "You three stay here."

"But she gave it to me." Luke protested

"And we brought you in on this it's like our case" Clyde pointed between me and him."

"No arguments." She left with Maria and it was just us three. Fan...tastic.
