35. It All Goes

Mary looked at her small family, a family she had found and built in the span of four years and before. She stood up from Fury's side, her fractured arm in a sling, and a bandage on her forehead along with bandages wrapped around her shoulder and torso. All she was wearing was a white wife beater shirt and black sweatpants along with black converse. She had also cut her long dark brunette hair when she and Fury went into hiding. Her hair now came to just above her shoulders.

"Mama?" Becca questions, her bright blue eyes clouding over with tears, she was sure she'd never see her Mama again. Steve held onto his niece as he stood in place, frozen as he saw his sister after watching her flatline.

Mary nods, "Yes baby, i'm here." She tells her daughter, who then rubs to her, carefully wrapping her arms around her mother, "I promise i'm never leaving again." Mary murmurs into her daughter's hair as she kisses her temple.

Steve wraps his arms around both his girls, not being able to stop smiling, "Never do that again, Mary. Never again." He whispers, tears streaming down his face as his sister nods.

"I never plan on needing to fake my own death again." Mary murmurs, smiling at them, kissing her brother's cheek as she stands back up with them, smiling at Sam and Natasha, "Hi wings." She teases Sam.

"Hi shortstack." Sam teases back, "That wasn't cool, faking your death, you really scared me." He adds as he hugs her briefly. Mary nods slowly at her friend.

"I'm sorry for scaring you all like that, but Nick said it was the only way to make sure that whoever was hunting us would leave us alone." She states as she goes back over to Fury, Becca not far behind from her mother, not wanting to be away from her again.

"Dr. Fine, can you take care of Nat? I'm still fixing Nick's bandages." Mary asks the other doctor, he nods and sits down next to Natasha, starting to apply pressure onto her wound.

Becca looks between everyone, sitting down next to her mother, smiling at her, "Can I help, Mama?" She asks softly.

Mary glances at Becca, nodding, "You can hand me the supplies." She states, making her daughter grin in return. The teenager nods, eagerly standing up and looking around for the supplies her Mama will need.

Steve looks at Fury, "What exactly happened to you?" He asks the director.

Mary looks at her brother then back at her friend, nodding, "We've been over this multiple times, Nick. I know you remember everything."

Fury nods slowly, "Well let's see, lacerated spinal column, cracked sternum, shattered collarbone, perforated liver, and one hell of a headache." Fury lists off.

"Don't forget your collapsed lung." Mary points out.

Fury nods, "O, let's not forget that. Otherwise I'm good."

Mary turns to look at them, "I had a fractured arm, two decent size bullet wounds in my shoulder and stomach, bruised ribs, a cracked rid actually, and lots of bruises." She lists off her own injuries, causing everyone in the room to look down at the floor.

Natasha speaks up as Dr. Fine applies more pressure to her wound, "They cut you both open, both of your hearts stopped."

Mary nods, "Tetrodotoxin B. Slows the pulse to one beat per minute."

"Banner developed it for stress. Didn't work out so great for him, but we found a use for it." Fury adds in.

"Why all the secrecy? Why not just tell us?" Steve asks as he shifts his footing, watching his sister and niece carefully. Even though he knew they were safe where they're at, it didn't stop him from always watching over them.

"Any attempt on the Director and Co-Founder's lives had to look successful." Maria says, looking at everyone.

"Can't kill you if you're already dead." Fury says, then glances solemnly at Mary, "Besides, we weren't sure who to trust." he adds.

Mary glances down, "I didn't want to go through with it.. I didn't even know about the plan until we had gotten to the apartment and Nick told me about it." She says in her defense, "I wanted to tell you everything, but we knew Hydra was listening in."

Steve shakes his head, "It's alright, Lizzie." He says, his heart warming at using his nickname for his sister again after believing he never would again.

Mary smiles, looking at Becca, watching her fall asleep on her Mama's shoulder.

A few hours have passed, the small team is gathered around a table, Fury sits in a seat next to Mary as they open up a secure laptop to go over the plan to take down the helicarriers.

Fury holds a picture of Pierce, looking at it, "This man declined the Nobel Peace Prize. He said, 'Peace wasn't an achievement, it was an responsibility." He says as he tosses the picture onto the table, "See, it's stuff like this that gives me trust issues." He adds.

Mary chuckles, "I've despised that man since he started at Shield. My gut was right the whole time. He is evil." She states, running her fingers through Becca's hair, attempting to soothe her daughter's anxiety about the whole thing.

"We have to stop that launch." Natasha says.

"I don't think the Council's accepting my calls anymore." Fury retorts as he pulls a case over, opening it, showing the group the three blue chips.

"what's that?" Sam asks hesitantly, looking the chips over.

Maria turns a laptop over with digital blueprints of the helicarriers, "Once the helicarriers reach three thousand feet, they'll triangulate with Insight satellites becoming fully operational." She informs the group.

"We need to breach those carriers and replace their targeting blades with our own." Mary says, looking at the blueprints.

"One or two wont cut it. We need to link all three carriers for this to work, because if one of those ships remains operational a whole lot of people are going to die." Maria states.

"We have to assume everyone aboard those is Hydra. We need to get pass them, insert the server blades, and maybe, just maybe we can salvage what's left.." Fury says, causing Mary to look at him.

Steve steps up, shaking his head, "We're not salvaging anything. We're not just taking down the carriers. We're taking down Shield." He states, giving a weak smile to his sister, "I'm sorry, Mary."

His sister shakes her head, "No, don't be. Shield died the day Howard and Peggy over rid my authority to allow Operation Paperclip to happen. It should've never happened." She says, "I was proud of what I helped create when we took down Loki, when we saved people being held hostage in foreign countries. That's what Shield is. And i'll spend the rest of my life building that back up. To make Shield what it was suppose to be. Not what the stupid Council made it to be."

Fury shakes his head, "Shield had nothing to do with it." He says to Steve.

"You gave me this mission, this is how it ends, I have Mary's okay, that's all that matters to me. Shield's been compromised, you said so yourself. Hydra grew right under your nose and nobody noticed." Steve retorts sternly.

"Why do you think we're meeting in this cave? I noticed." Fury replies, looking at Steve in the eyes.

"And how many paid the price before you did?" Steve asks, placing his hand on Mary's shoulder.

Fury sighs, leaning back in his chair, glancing at Mary, then back at the captain, "Look, I didn't know about Barnes." He states.

Mary intakes air sharply along with her daughter. The doctor had only found out her husband was alive but under Hydra's control a few hours ago. It still hurt to hear out loud that the love of her life was used as a weapon to kill innocent people for decades. The hazel eyes of the doctor cloud with tears, pulling her daughter tighter in her arms.

"Even if you have, would you have told me? Told Mary? Or would you have compartmentalized that too? Shield, Hydra, it all goes." Steve states, squeezing his sister's shoulder for comfort.

Mary nods, "He's right. Everything has to go or it wont be a complete success."

Fury looks at Natasha then to Sam, the Falcon raises his hands in defense, "Don't look at me. I do what he does, just slower." He states to Fury.

Fury nods slowly, looking back at Steve, "Well.." he pauses, glancing at Mary, then back at the soldier, "Looks like you're giving the orders now, Captain."

Steve and Mary stand on the bridge connected to where they're hiding, both of them are remembering times with Bucky. They're going back and forth trying to catch up in the short time they have before the mission begins.

"How was Becca? Was she good?" Mary asks, concerned about her daughter during the time her family believed she was dead.

"She was amazing." Steve says, "She's the spitting image of both you and Bucky. The perfect combination."

Mary smiles at her brother's statement, "That's what i thought before she was taken." She murmurs, pushing a strand of hair behind her ear, looking at her brother, "I never meant to cause you and Becca, or anyone pain when i 'died'." She mutters.

Steve nods slowly, "I wont lie to you, i never have before and i wont start now. It hurt so damn much seeing the doctors call your time of death. I wanted to scream, to punch something, to release all my frustration and anger but i couldn't. Because Becca was with me and she was hurting as much if not more than i was."

Mary nods slowly, thinking of a memory, "Remember Mom's funeral?" She asks Steve, her brother nods.

"Of course. The day i saw Buck fall in love with you." Steve comments, smiling at his sister, "You know.. he may remember you.. if he's there.. i'll mention you.. i wont stop until he comes home."

Mary nods, "I remember when he walked us to the apartment.."

Bucky, Mary and Steve walk up the steps to the Rogers sibling's apartment, "We looked for you after." Bucky says to Steve, "My folks wanted to give you and Mary to the cemetery."

Mary leans against the railing, watching them. Steve shakes his head, "I know, i'm sorry. I just.. wanted to be alone." Steve replies, shoving his hands into his pockets.

"How was it?" Bucky asks even though he attended the funeral himself. He just wanted to hear Steve's side of it, he had gotten Mary's earlier.

Steve shrugs, not meeting Bucky's eyes, "It was okay. She's next to Dad."

"I was gonna ask-"

"I know what you're gonna say, Buck, I just.." Steve murmurs, cutting his friend off.

Bucky looks at Mary, she gives him a warm smile, "He's been hard on himself since she left." Mary says quietly.

Bucky nods, thinking, "We can put the couch cushions on the floor and Mary takes the couch, laying the blankets on it like when we were kids." Bucky suggests, wanting to make his best friends feel better, "It'll be fun, all you gotta do is shine my shoes, maybe take out the trash." He teases as they reach the apartment door, Steve pats himself down looking for the keys, Bucky then kicks aside a brick on the ground, revealing a key. He bends down and picks it up, handing it to Steve, "Come on." He pleads.

Steve shakes his head, Mary sighs, knowing the answer her brother is about to give. He doesn't like leaning on others for help, wanting to do everything himself even though he can't most of the time. "Thank you, Buck, but i can get by on my own. Mary can too." He says, making his sister cringe.

"Please don't speak for me, Steve." She murmurs, "I love you, but we need the help right now."

Bucky nods at Mary's statement, "The thing is, you don't have to." Bucky says as he places his hand on Steve's shoulder, squeezing it for comfort, "I'm with you to the end of the line, for both of you." He states, wrapping his arm around Mary, holding her against his body.

Mary's cheeks flush bright pink, squirming out of Bucky's hold as Steve nods at his friend, walking inside.

"He's gonna be there, you know?" Sam Wilson's voice calls out, breaking the siblings out of their flashback.

"We know." Mary says in reply.

"Look, whoever he used to be, the guy he is now, I don't think he's the kind you save. He's the kind you stop." Sam says cautiously, looking at Mary, "I'm sorry."

Mary shakes her head, "No, he's in there. Somewhere."

Steve nods at his sister's comment, "I don't know if I can do that." He says to his friend.

"Well, he might not give you a choice. He doesn't know any of you."

"He will. Gear up, it's time." Steve says as he kisses his sister's temple.

"You gonna wear that?" Sam calls out.

"No. If you're gonna fight a war, you gotta wear a uniform." Steve yells back in reply as he jogs off to go get his uniform.

Later that day, Steve and Becca sneak into the Smithsonian. The uncle leads his niece through the Captain America section. The teenager gasps quietly, looking at all the pictures,

"You were really tiny Uncle Stevie." She whispers, Steve laughs quietly as he begins to take his World War II uniform off the mannequin.

"Yeah, I was." He replies, "Come get your mother's uniform." He says.

Becca grins, rushing up to the podium that holds the Commando's uniforms and her Mother's old Commando uniform. It was a dark green button up jacket that matched Bucky's dark blue, she had dark brown work pants that kept her warm in the snow, pockets lined her pants to hold her medical supplies, she had dark brown boots that laced up in the front and went up to her knees they gripped the snow, mountainside or wherever the Commando's had stationed for the next mission.

Becca's mother was one of the first women in the 40's to wear pants publicly. The teenager smiled, "Mama was a trend setter." She whispers, pulling the uniform off the mannequin and going behind the platform to change. When she's done changing, she steps out, seeing her Uncle in his old uniform.

She salutes him, then giggles quietly as she braids her hair to keep it out of her face.

"You look just like your Mother, Becca." Steve tells her as he puts his helmet on, smiling at her.

"I feel like i'm doing good for once."

"You are. And we'll get your father back." Steve promises as they jog out of the museum.
