28. On Your Left

Mary sat against a tree, overlooking the Washington Monument and the Lincoln Memorial as Steve ran his morning laps around Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.

She looked up when she heard her brother and another man.

"Don't you say it! Don't you say it!" The African American man said in frustration as Steve passed him again.

"On your left."

"Come on!"

Mary laughed at the man's reaction, her brother was always courteous towards others, that was just who he was.

The two siblings had moved from Mary's Brooklyn apartment to the one she owned in Washington DC after the Battle of New York two years ago, it's now 2014, Steve is flourishing in Shield and so is Mary, since they moved, Steve has had more missions with the Strike team and Natasha. The three became close friends over the years.

While Steve had his missions, Mary had taken over the medical practices within Shield, and some outside. She still kept in touch with her protege, Stephen Strange, but he had also made his own name, becoming one of the top neurosurgeons in America. She was proud of him.

So Mary sits against her normal tree, she watched Steve but was also typing on her laptop her godson had given her before the siblings left.

It had Jarvis included so Mary hardly had to do anything technical. She and Tony had taken up finding Mary's daughter Becca again, now that Steve was mostly settled in the new era.

Tony had ruled out that she was still in the US, and was now looking at organizations across the waters that worked in cold cases and abducted children, hoping they could give the pair any smidge of hope that Becca was still out there, somewhere, alive.

Mary shut her laptop as the man comes to sit beside her on the tree, clearly needing to get his breathing under control.

"You need a medic?" Mary asks him as her brother walks up to the two.

The man looks at Mary, then chuckles, looking at Steve, "I need a new set of lungs." The man breathes out, causing Mary to laugh. "Dude, you just ran like thirteen miles in thirty minutes." He adds

Mary raises an eyebrow at her brother, "Only thirteen?" She quips, causing her brother to shrug.

"I guess i got a late start." Steve replies.

The man looks at him, "Oh, really? You should be ashamed of yourself. You should take another lap." He states, pausing he looks away for a second then looks back at Steve, "Did you just take it? I assumed you just took it."

Mary laughs again, smiling at how blunt this man is with her brother, "He normally does twenty laps." She points out, "He woke up late this morning."

Steve shakes his head at his sister, "What unit you with?" He asks.

"58, Pararescue. But now I'm working down at the VA. Sam Wilson." The man, Sam, introduces himself to the two. Steve bends down and shakes his hand and pull him up.

"Steve Rogers." Mary's brother sates.

"I kind of put that together." Sam quips, then looks at Mary, "And you?"

"Mary Barnes. Steve's sister." She introduces herself, seeing herself trusting in Sam Wilson as she packs her laptop away in its case and stands up.

Sam's eyes widen, "Sister? I thought you died, all the history books say that anyways."

Mary shrugs, "They say a lot of things that aren't true. Steve's here." She points out.

Sam nods, taking it in, "Well it's nice to meet both of you." He states, then looks at Steve, "Must have freaked you out coming home after the whole defrosting thing." He murmurs.

Steve shrugs, "It takes some getting used too, been a little easier with Mary." He states, the two turn to walk away but then Sam stops them.

"It's your bed, right?" He asks.

"What's that?" Steve asks Sam, turning back and walking over to him.

"Your bed, it's too soft. When I was over there I'd sleep on the ground and use rock for pillows, like a caveman. Now I'm home, lying in my bed, and it's like..."

"Lying on a bed of marshmallows. Feels like i'm gonna sink right to the floor." Steve finishes Sam's statement, drawing a smile out of the African American man.

"How long?" Mary asks, intrigued by their new friend.

"Two tours. You two must miss the good old days, huh?" Sam replies.

The siblings glance at each other, shrugging a bit, "Well, things aren't so bad.." Steve trails off

"We used to boil everything.." Mary adds, thinking about back in the 40's.

"No polio is good. The internet! So helpful." Steve adds.

"He's been reading a lot trying to catch up." Mary points out.

Sam thinks for a moment, then smirks, "Marvin Gaye, 1972, "Trouble Man" Soundtrack. Everything you missed, jammed in one album."

Steve smiles, nodding, pulling out a small notebook, "I'll put it on the list." He states as he writes it down. Mary had been trying to get him to watch some of her favorite shows, like "I Love Lucy." So she had compiled a list of things for him into his notebook that he took everywhere.

Soon Steve's phone beeps, he pulls it out of his pocket, Mary looks over, seeing it's from Natasha reading:

"Extraction imminent. Meet at the curb. :)"

Mary chuckles at Natasha's use of smiley faces as a sleek black and red Corvette drives up to the curb.

"Alright, Sam, duty calls. Thanks for the run. If that's what you wanna call running." Steve quips as the two men shake hands.

Sam smirks, "Oh, is that how it is?"

"Oh, that's how it is." Steve chuckles out as he walks up to the car

Sam laughs, "Okay. Any time you wanna stop by the VA, make me look awesome in front of the girl at the front desk, just let me know."

Steve nods, smiling, "I'll keep that in mind."

Nat rolls down the window, smirking,
"Hey fellas. Do any of you know where the Smithsonian is? I need to pick up a fossil." Natasha quips, causing Mary to bust out in laughter.

"I'm saving that one Nat."

"Hilarious." Steve murmurs as he climbs into the car.

"I thought it was." Mary states as she and Steve quickly kiss each others cheek saying goodbye.

"You'll be fine at the office?" Steve asks, making sure his sister is taken care of.

Mary nods, "I have reports to file, bills to pay, daughter to find." She rattles off, "You know, my usual."

"Tell Tony i said hi." Steve replies.

"Will do, Stevie, be safe." She says back as the window rolls up and they drive off. The hazel eyed girl turns back to Sam, "So! Coffee?" She asks.

Sam nods, "Sure. And you can tell me how you've been alive all these years."

Mary laughs, "Deal."

Becca cowers in the corner as The Madam continues to beat her, tears falling from the girl's blue eyes, "Stop.. please." She begs. When the beatings stop, the small girl looks up, seeing her Papa hold The Madam's arm.

Becca's Papa locks eyes with The Madam, then grabs the girls arm, he has to be rough with her to keep up appearances, or else both of them will be in trouble. Adam had been sent away a few days ago to the states for a reason he couldn't tell Becca. She was crushed when her favorite person in the Red Room besides her Papa was gone.

They had a visitor today at the Red Room, the evil man, Becca had dubbed him, she never knew his name, but everyone called him The Director.

Her Papa pulls her into the small bedroom, bending down to her height, "You will be free of this place." He tells her quietly.

Becca wipes her eyes and cheeks, "Not without you." She mumbles in reply.

Her Papa shakes his head, then stands up abruptly, shoving Becca into the corner roughly to make it seem that he was the one beating her when The Director steps into the room

"You have a mission." The older man states to her Papa. Becca's eyes widen, a mission meant he'd leave. "You leave in 24 hours." He states.

Her Papa nods, then hesitates, "No." he mutters out, shocking the evil man. Becca watches as the man in the suit walks back to her Papa. A doctor whispers something in the Director's ear that Becca can barely hear.

"He's become quite attached to the girl, she could prove useful, perhaps you bring her as well?" The doctor suggests, making Becca's blue eyes widen in shock and fear. She hadn't left the Red Room since she arrived years ago.

The evil man contemplates it, then nods, "She's skilled, just disobedient." He murmurs, "We'll bring her with. Does that work for you, Solider?"

Becca's Papa looks at her, he wont be separated from her, so he nods. Then widens his eyes as he and Becca are knocked unconscious.

"Wipe and prep them for transport, i need to be back in DC before tomorrow." The evil man states as Becca falls unconscious.

Mary watches as Steve storms past her office in Shield, he's on a mission for something, she sees the look on his face and she can see that.

She stands up from her desk, rushing after Steve, "Steve! What's happened? Was the mission a success?" She asks as she pulls her suit jacket over her shoulders.

Steve hears his sister as they reach Fury's office, "He can't just tell the truth." He murmurs as he walks into the office. Opening the door as he and Mary enter the room he says, "You just can't stop yourself from lying, can you?"

Fury looks up, seeing Mary's confused expression and Steve's stern one. He sighs, "I didn't lie. Agent Romanoff had a different mission than yours."

"Which you didn't feel obligated to share."

"I'm not obligated to share anything." Fury retorts back to Steve.

"Those hostages could've died, Nick." Steve tells him, he didn't care that Nat had a different mission from what Mary gathered, he cared that he wasn't informed about it, which compromised his own mission.

Mary crosses her arms as she continues to watch the confrontation unfold. She knows it's not her place to step in, so she doesn't. She'll talk to both of the men after the fact.

"I sent the greatest solider in history to make sure that didn't happen." Nick replies.

"Soldiers trust each other, that's what makes it an army. Not a bunch of guys running around and shooting guns." Steve replies, Mary nods in agreement, you need a foundation of trust if you expect results.

"The last time I trusted someone, I lost an eye." Fury mutters, causing Mary to snicker, she remembers Goose the cat scratching his eye, causing him to need the eye patch.

Fury stands up from his desk, walking around it and leaning up against it as he crosses his arms, looking at Steve, "Look, I didn't want you doing anything you weren't comfortable with. Agent Romanoff is comfortable with everything."

"I can't lead a mission when the people I'm leading have missions of their owns." Steve tries to reason, sighing in frustration.

"It's called compartmentalization. Nobody spills the secrets because nobody knows them all." Nick replies to him, Mary nods again, thinking over the conversation, looking at both of them.

"Except you." Steve retorts as Fury leads them out of his office, the siblings following him.

"You're wrong about me. I do share. I'm nice like that." Fury retorts as they walk into the elevator, "Insight Bay." He tells the computer.

"Captain Rogers does not have clearance for Project Insight." The computer replies.

"Project Insight? Nick, you told me that wasn't going to be developed." Mary murmured.

Nick shakes his head, "Director override, Fury, Nicholas J." He commands the computer.

"Confirmed." The computer says and the elevator starts to descend.

Steve looks up and around the elevator, "You know, they used to play music in." He says in reference to the elevator.

Mary nods, "I mourned the day that stopped."

Nick nodded, leaning against the railing, "Yeah. My grandfather operated one of these things for forty years. My granddad worked in a nice building, he got good tips. He'd walk home every night, roll of ones stuffed in his lunch bag. He'd say "Hi", people would say hi back." He states, pausing, "Time went on, neighborhood got rougher. He'd say "Hi", they'd say, "Keep on steppin'." Granddad got to grippin' that lunch bag a little tighter."

Steve raised his eye brow as he listens to Nick's story, "Did he ever get mugged?" He asks.

Nick chuckled, "Every week some punk would say, 'What's in the bag?'"

Mary looks at them, "What did he do?"

"He'd show 'em. Bunch of crumpled up ones, and a loaded .22 Magnum." Fury replies, smirking, "Graddad loved people. But he didn't trust them very much." He states as the three of them walk off the elevator.

The sight Mary saw was something she hoped she'd never see from the organization she built. Three weaponized helicarriers being built, Mary knew where the idea of Project Insight, and she hated the man who brought it up.

Fury notices Steve and Mary looking at the helicarriers, "Yeah, i know. They're a little bigger than a .22." He states as he shows the siblings around, "This is Project Insight. Three next generation Helicarriers synced to a network of targeting satellites."

Steve looks at Fury, "Launched from the Lemurian Star."

"Once we get them in the air they never need to come down. Continuous suborbital flight courtesy of our new repulsor engines." Fury adds, looking them over.

Mary sees the new engines, "Tony?" She asks.

Fury nods, "Well, he had a few suggestions once he got an up close look at our old turbines." He answers, then points to the weapons, "These new long range precision guns can eliminate a thousand hostiles a minute. The satellites can read a terrorist's DNA before he steps outside his spider hole. We gonna neutralize a lot of threats before they even happen."

Steve looked around cautiously, Mary too, "I thought the punishment usually came after the crime." Steve points out, Mary nods, "Innocent until proven guilty?" Mary adds.

"We can't afford to wait that long." Fury replies.

"Who's we?" The siblings ask in unison.

"After New York, I convinced the World Security Council we needed a quantum surge in threat analysis. For once we're way ahead of the curve." Fury explains.

"Fury, the council have sticks so far up their asses they can't figure out which way is north." Mary quips, she never liked the council and what they stood for. They had their purpose, but Mary never saw the point of them. They're leader especially.

"By holding a gun at everyone on Earth and calling it protection." Steve inputs.

"You know, I read those SSR files. Greatest generation? You guys did some nasty stuff." Fury quips back at Steve, making Mary all the more furious with her friend.

"Yeah, we compromised. Sometimes in ways that made us not sleep so well. But we did it so the people could be free." Mary states, crossing her arms.

Steve points up to the helicarriers, "This isn't freedom, this is fear." He adds.

"SHIELD takes the world as it is, not as we'd like it to be. It's getting damn near past time for you to get with that program, you two." Fury states under his breath

"Don't hold your breath." Mary snaps.

As the siblings walk back to the elevator to leave, they look at each other, "Want to escape to the museum?" Mary asks.

Steve nods, "i'll drive." He states
