14. Through the years

Upper West Side, New York
January 1st, 1950

Mary smiled at she packed up hers and Becca's things, "Becca! Don't forget your picture you drew for Daddy and Uncle Dum Dum!" She exclaims as she zips up the small bag.

It was the fifth wedding anniversary for Mary and Bucky, every year since Becca was born, everyone who knew Bucky would get together on that day at his gravestone and have a picnic afterwards, honoring his family and his memory.

A little brunette girl with uneven pig tails and bright blue eyes comes bounding into the room, "Uncle Howie did my hair!" Becca shouts with excitement, giggling as she shows her Mama.

Mary grins, shaking her head, "You know Uncle Howie can't do your hair." She reminds her four year old daughter.

"But it's funny watching him try." Becca replies, giggling as she grabs her teddy bear, Mr Stuffington, a bear Mary had kept from she was a teenager.

Mary walks out with everything she needs, smiling down at Becca. They walk into the living room, seeing Peggy and Howard talking.

"Alright." Mary whispers to Becca as she bends down to her height, "I need you to go surprise Auntie Peggy." She tells her, "Super Stealth Commando mission."

Becca gasps, nodding her head rapidly, she loved being considered a Howling Commando, always wanting mission like her Uncles told her that her Uncle Stevie and Daddy used to do before the went to a better place.

Becca wanted to go to that better place, but her Mama always told her that it wasn't for Becca, that her Daddy and Uncle Stevie are looking down and watching over them everyday.

Mary walks into the kitchen as Becca sneaks around Howard's expensive furniture, they were still living in Howard's house in New York, they enjoyed being around people, and Howard had too much room, if he didn't have Mary and Becca with him, he would go stir crazy.

The mother watches her daughter as she fills a small basket full of fruits and sandwiches, trying not to blow her daughter mission with her laughter.

Becca sneaks up behind where her Auntie Peggy is sitting, talking with Uncle Howie, she gets ready to pounce when someone lifts her up, startling her, she looks around, seeing her Mr J, "Mr J!" She shouts, "You ruined my Super Secret Commando mission that Mama gave me!" She shouts, pursing her lips and crossing her arms in frustration.

Both parties on the couch turn to look at Becca, laughing in the process, each one of the people in the household saw Bucky in his little girl more and more each year. She had gotten his playfulness, his joking behavior, but also had gotten much of her personality from Mary. When Becca saw something hurt, she would want to look after it. So more often then not, Howard's house became a pet hospital for birds and squirrels.

"My apologies, Ms B." Jarvis replies, setting her down, chuckling.

Peggy leans over the couch, picking the young girl up and into her lap, "Another Commando mission thwarted, Becca?" She asks.

The girl in question huffs, nodding, "Mr J always foils my missions." She pouts, Howard laughs watching them.

Mary walks towards the door, "Alright! Let's get moving." She states, smiling at her friends, but saddened by the thought of losing them, even if it's to old age, since she can't age anymore.

She refuses to test Becca, because there's a possibility that her daughter could've also been affected by Schmidt's serum, but she didn't want that ruining her daughters life.

When the five of them reach the cemetery, the Commandos are already there, waiting for them.

Becca grins, getting out of the car and racing towards her crazy group of uncles, Falsworth is the first one to spot her, but she's quick to turn her fingers into guns, shooting the man down while she giggles.

Falsworth pretends to be wounded, falling to the ground, "Go on without me men! I've been gravely wounded by Sergeant Baby Barnes!"

Becca squeals, pointing her fingers at the others now, "pew pew!" She shouts, the remaining four look at each other, then collapse onto the ground, faking their wounds.

"What Hydra couldn't do in years, Baby Barnes took us all down in minutes!" Morita shouts, pretending to be dead

Becca laughs, rushing closer to them, "I got you!" She shouts, placing her foot onto Jones's chest to signify that she conquered them. Until Dum Dum scoops her up into his arms, "Bullet proof vest, Baby B!" He shouts, "I'm unstoppable!"

The girl in his arms squeals at his silliness, Mary stands off to the side, laughing with tears in her eyes, knowing that Bucky would've done the exact same with his daughter.

Upper West Side, New York
December 28th, 1950

Mary was sound asleep when the worst night of her life happened. Everyone was asleep when men broke into Howard's house, ransacking the place. The rustling commotion woke up Mary from her sleep.

She couldn't figure out what was going on until the screams of her daughter filled her ears, she grabbed the gun she had stashed in her nightstand drawer, rushing out to the living room, "Becca!" She screams, hearing her daughter call back to her, Howard was now awake with his own weapon in his hand.

It was the dead of night when men broke into Mary's perfect world and shattered it. Her precious gift that Bucky gave her, had been taken by men she didn't even get a chance to see. Her mind wanted to scream Hydra, but there was no way. Steve had taken down Hydra five years ago.

Howard watched as his best friend crumbled to the ground, screaming his goddaughters name over and over again.

She was in hysterics, and nobody could bring her out of it for months.

Years go by, it's now May of 1970, Howard was now married to a lovely woman named Maria and expecting their first child, Peggy had also married but no one ever had met the man, not even Mary.

Mary had become a Doctor during these years, while her friends aged, she didn't. So she had thrown her life into her work in the medical field.

Together, Mary, Howard and Peggy created a new organization, Shield. Mary was the medical, Howard was the manufacturing, and Peggy was the operation. The were the heads of Shield.

Only a select group of people truly knew what was going on with Mary and her non-aging. Maria was the first outsider to know, since Mary was living with them at the time. Howard felt that her mental state even though twenty years had passed, was still fragile, so he wanted to keep her with people she knew and not on her own. Maria agreed and became fast friends with Mary.

Over the years Mary had perfected nearly every medical field, going on to science fields, she had met Hank Pym and quickly wanted to help with his particles that he was developing.

Mary walks along the hallway of Camp Lehigh, the three heads of Shield had taken residence of the camp as their base of operations.

She comes out of the hallway and into the elevator, she looks over at two men, one having a strange goatee and a solider who looks like her brother. She pays no mind to them, but turns to look at the man with the facial hair, "You're setting the fashion world years ahead." She tells him as she walks out of the elevator. She steps off, smiling as she sees Hank running around the room. Calming him down before she goes to see Howard.

They had recruited Hydra scientists over the years, Zola being one of them, she refused to sign the order letting it happen, so Peggy and Howard over-rid her authority.

That caused strife between the three friends for some years but they eventually fought it out and made up.

Next few hours go by and Mary sees it's time to go home. She goes to the elevator, smiling as she sees the goatee man and Howard talking.

"Ree, this is Howard Potts." Howard tells her, she nods, holding out her hand.

"Nice to meet you, Potts." She states, shaking his hand.

The man seems flustered as he holds his briefcase, looking around the elevator.

Howard looks at Mary, "Maria wanted you to help make dinner if that's okay." He informs her.

She nods, "Of course, I should be doing it, she's nearly ready to have the baby, she should be resting, Doctor's orders." She states, Howard chuckles, nodding.

When the three step out of the elevator, Mary watches Potts pull Howard into an awkward hug, chuckling a bit at her friends reaction, she goes over to Jarvis, "How's Mrs Jarvis?" She asks

The butler smiles, "She's quite well, thank you for asking." He replies as Howard goes over to the three.

"Jarvis, have we seen that man before?" He asks, but Jarvis shakes his head as he opens the door for the two of them, "No, Sir, not that i can recall."

"He just looks awfully familiar." Howard says as they drive away.

It was now December 16th, 1991, Maria had given birth to a spitfire son who they named Anthony on May 29th, 1970.

Tony was now twenty-one years old, he had come home from doing whatever he did now a-days and was sprawled out on the couch with a santa hat over his head.

Maria and Mary are playing the piano together, smiling as Maria sings one of her favorite songs.

Howard walks into the room, buttoning his jacket. Mary turns to look over at her godson, "Wake up, T and say goodbye to your parents."

Tony's father looks down at the couch, "Who's the homeless person on the couch?" Howard asks, since becoming a father, he had grown cold, not like the Howard she knew years ago. She remembers that she asked him one night why he changed

"Howard, why are you like this. Tony needs his father, not a drill sergeant." Mary snaps, causing her friend to cringe back.

He sighs, shaking his head, "It's nothing.. just my own stupid nature."

The doctor shakes her head, "You have a chance with him that i don't, Howard." She reminds him, "I would give anything to have Becca back. Don't mess this chance up with Tony."

"It's because of Becca that i act like this towards him!" Howard shouts, surprising Mary.

"What? Why! What did Becca do?"

"Nothing- she did nothing wrong, it's what happened. What happened to you after the accident." He tells her, "You were hysterical for months.. you never ate, you never slept, you were nothing but skin and bones, Ree."

"What're you getting at Howard."

"You were trying to slowly kill yourself by starving yourself, weren't you."

Mary's taken aback, looking at him, but she nods, "Becca was James's gift to me.. and without her.. i didn't see a life worth living for."

"That's exactly why i'm harsh towards Tony."

"I'm not following."

"You were attached to Becca, everyone was. I can't risk that with Tony. If i lost him and i was as attached to him as you were with Becca, i'd be a mess. So i didn't."

Mary widens her hazel eyes, "So you purposefully shoved Tony aside so you wouldn't become me if you ever lost him?"

All her friend can do is nod, he's shameful of it, but Mary understands the basis of it.

Tony staggers to stand up, fixing his santa hat, "This is why i love coming home for Christmas.. right before you leave town."

Mary sighs, standing up, rubbing Tony's back, she had become a second mother to him naturally, she was there when he was born, there for every injury and every need he had. And Mary had looked to him as a son, caring for him when she couldn't look after her own daughter.

No one spoke about Becca much, only certain times, Tony only knows that she was taken long before he was born and that it affected his Mama Ree to her core.

Maria sighs, "Be nice, dear, he's studying abroad." Maria says to her husband.

Howard looks at Tony, "Really, which broad? What's her name?"

Mary's eyes narrow, "Howard." She snaps under her breath, but her friend pays no mind to it.

"Candice." Tony retorts, earning a smack on the backside of his head from his Mama Ree, he turns to her, sheepishly smiling as she rolls her hazel eyes.

Howard pulls Tony's hat off his head, "Do me a favor? Try not to burn the house down before Monday." He states, "And go easy on Ree."

Mary rolls her eyes again, "Because i can't handle him?" She quips, earning a snicker from her godson.

"Your father's flying us to the Bahamas for a little getaway." Maria replies

Howard clears his throat, "We may have to make a quick stop." He mutters.

Mary knows what he means, she was asked to come as well, but she declined, wanting to spend the holidays with her godson.

"At the Pentagon. Right? Don't worry, you're gonna love the holiday menu at the commissary." Tony states to his mom, smirking a bit when she stops playing the piano.

"You know, they say sarcasm is a metric for potential. If that's true, you'll be a great man some day. I'll get the bags." Howard says as he exits the room.

Maria sighs, kissing her son's cheek, "We'll see you on Monday." She tells him

All Tony does is nod.

It was the dead of night when Mary's phone rings, she picks it up, "Doctor Barnes speaking.." she mutters, still half asleep, the man on the other line relays to her what happened, widening her eyes, sleep leaving her body entirely as she stands up, rushing to her godson's room.

"I- thank you." She says to the other line, she hangs up, knocking on the door before opening it, "Tony." She whispers, trying to get her attention as tears fall from her eyes.

She sits down on the edge of his bed, rubbing his back like she's always done since he was an infant, "Tony, wake up." She mutters again, stirring him out of his sleep.

"Mama Ree?" He mutters, looking at his clock, 2:36am, it reads. "It's so late.." he mumbles, sitting up.

"I just got a phone call from the Pentagon." She mutters, watching Tony's face become cold.

"You leaving me too?" He asks curtly

Mary shakes her head, "It's your parents, Tony. They were in a car accident on their way to the airport from the Pentagon." She tells him, "They didn't make it."

Tony's face goes through a whirlwind of emotions before he buries himself into his godmother. He grips onto her nightgown, tears falling from his eyes as Mary mourns with him, the godfather of her daughter is gone, her best friend, someone who knew her before all her loss, is gone.

"We'll go see Aunt Peggy tomorrow, okay?" She states to him, feeling him nod on her chest.

"How did you get over losing everyone, Mama Ree?" Tony asks, his breathing is unsteady from the crying. Mary sighs, rubbing his back more.

"I never did.. it never truly leaves you, it becomes apart of who you are. You let yourself grow from it, or die letting it consume you." She tells him, "I've lost so many people in my lifetime, i should know not to get attached, but then i wouldn't be here with you."

Tony nods, sitting up, wiping his face with the sleeve of his shirt, "i don't want it to consume me, Ree." He mumbles, making Mary smiles.

"Then don't let it."

Years have past since Tony lost his parents. He's been the head of Stark Industries since he was twenty-one.

In 2008, Tony flew off to Afghanistan to show off his new weapons to the troops, only to be kidnapped by terrorists.

Mary was at her apartment in Brooklyn when she heard the news. Once Howard had passed, she felt that she needed to get out of the house, so she bought an apartment in Brooklyn, and Washington DC. She was still the head of Shield, but not to the world, to the world, Nicolas J Fury was the director of Shield. But again, only a select few knew the truth.

Tony knew, his assistant Pepper knew as well, Agent Phil Coulson was apart of the small circle of people that knew.

Mary had received a frantic call from Pepper when Tony was kidnapped. She quickly go onto a plane and flew to Malibu, California, where Tony now lives.

All she and Pepper could do was wait it out. Months went by and no word until Tony's best friend Rohdey called them saying they found him.

Pepper was at the airport waiting for Tony to be brought back to them. Mary was the first to hug him, but also to treat his wounds when she and Rhodey found him in Afghanistan. Tony was a stickler for anyone but Mary treating him. He only wanted her even as a child.

"Don't you ever scare me like that again, Anthony Stark." She snaps to him, Tony nods, smiling a bit, just happy to be back in his Mama Ree's arms, knowing he's safe there.

More months went by and Tony had built a suit of armor, calling himself Iron Man. No one knew what that would bring with it, but Mary had a feeling it wouldn't end well.

During all of this going on with her godson, her fellow scientist and friend, Bruce Banner, was trying to replicate the super solider serum, he thought the key to the formula was Gamma Rays, Mary knew that was wrong. But she couldn't say anything.

Bruce experimented with the Gamma Rays and wound up being transformed into a giant green beast known as the Hulk. Mary's heart was crushed when her friend left the science world to try and find a cure for what he called his disease.

Still, during all of this, Mary still kept up her passion and work as a doctor, one of the most highly skilled doctor's in the world. It's hard not to be when you have close to fifty years of experience in the medical field.

She found it time to find a protege, and she did, she saw potential in a medical student named Stephen Strange. So Mary took him under her wing as began showing him her methods and ways of healing people.

She'd met many people throughout her years on Earth. Keeping those she loved company, teaching people what she had learned. They all impacted her one way or the other.

And she loved every one of them.
