11. The Highest Honor

10 miles from the Austrian boarder
July 4th, 1944

The Commandos and Mary were celebrating Steve's birthday, they were stationed in another town close by Austria. They felt it fitting to celebrate their leader and Captain America along with the birth of the nation they were fighting to protect.

The group was sitting in a bar drinking away their troubles and celebrating, Steve, Bucky and Mary had decided to walk through the town before they left in the morning.

Bucky's arm was wrapped securely around his girlfriend as the trio walked the dimly lit cobblestone of the town.

"I think i'll miss this town the most." Mary states, "I really enjoyed being here." She adds. Her two boys nodding in agreement with her.

Bucky looks at his best friend, "Have you had a successful birthday, Stevie?" He asks.

Steve nods, "I didn't expect the Commandos to remember but they did, probably because Mary planned all of this." He states, teasing his sister a bit as they walk past a jewelry shop next to a dress shop.

Mary stops at the window of the dress shop, looking at all the well made dresses. The boys watch her, both glancing at each other and smiling. Mary had been taking care of all seven men for nearly a year now, she never had time to spend on herself, always stitching a wound, keeping look out while they're gone, or hunting for their food.

Bucky walks past the jewelry shop, looking at Steve, pulling him aside, out of Mary's earshot.

"Keep her busy while i go into the jewelry shop." He tells his best friend, Steve's eyes widen, his small smile turning into a large grin.

"Bucky, are you going to get what i think you're get?" Steve asks, "You know i already give you my blessing." He teases.

Bucky rolls his eyes, but can't stop smiling, "Yeah, i am. But i don't know when i'll ask her is the thing.." he trails off.

Steve thinks, trying to remember where they'll be next, "After our next base, we'll be close to France." He states, "Not really Paris, but still.. it's France."

Bucky nods, "I can work with that, Steve. Thank you." He replies, then quickly going into the shop.

Mary on the other hand has no idea what's going on as her brother drags her into the dress shop, "Steve!" She exclaims, startled by his sudden want to have her look at dresses.

"You should get a dress, Lizzie." He suggests to her, looking around the small shop, "Nothing fancy, because that's not you.." He adds.

Mary looks at him quizzically, "What's gotten into you? I have plenty of dresses back home, Peggy is keeping them safe for me." She retorts. "Besides, we don't any spare money left. We used it all for the guys and their beers." She points out to her brother, he looks defeated, then remembers he had money saved, he reaches into his back pocket, pulling out a small wallet, handing it to her.

"I don't know why i was saving it, but i think you can get better use out of it." He tells her, "Get a dress, maybe a white one?" Steve suggests.

"Steve, a white dress? That's for marriage." She reminds him, then spots a pearl white dress, walking over to it, she pulls it off the rack, looking over the detailing of it, the tie string back, it's off the shoulder sleeves, she looks at Steve, "It's perfect.." she mutters to him.

"Get it then." He concludes.

"Steve, are you sure? We could use this money for food, or more supplies." She tries to negotiate, but Steve wont cave, so she nods, "Alright, i'll try it on and only if it fits will i get it." She tells him.

Steve nods, the grin on his face never fading.

50 miles out of Colmar, France
November 14th, 1944

Mary was doing her usual inventory check when Bucky came to her tent, "You almost finished?" He asks her, his hands in his pockets, he fiddles anxiously with the ring box in his right jacket pocket, he had convinced the Commando's to give him the night off watch duty to take Mary into the town they were close by.

The town wasn't very crowded, and had nice places to walk around in. But Bucky had specific plans for his night out with Mary.

"Yes, just about." She replies, writing a couple things down as she stands up, "Ready." She states, grabbing her jacket, they had yet to witness snow in France yet but Mary was excited to see it fall for the first time of the year.

She looped her arm around Bucky's walking out of her tent, all the men whistling towards her, causing the girl to become shy, her face becoming hot and changing color.

Bucky chuckles, "Alright you idiots." He teases, winking briefly at Steve, "We're off." He announces, as they walk out of earshot of the men, Steve turns to look at all of them.

"I'll follow them." He states, standing up, finishing off his food, the Commandos turn to look at their Captain, confuses looks spread across their faces.

"Whatever for, Steve?" Falsworth asks, choruses of agreement soon follow from the rest.

"I'm not missing my only sister get engaged." Steve replies, His widening as he realizes what he just said.

"Little Mary Rogers is going to get engaged to Barnes?!" Dum Dum shouts, standing up along with the others.

"I'm not missing that!" Jones says in reply, the men all nod along.

Steve sighs, "Alright. But no one makes a sound."

Bucky had stopped the two of them at a small bakery, letting Mary pick out a pastry. He smiles as her eyes go wide when she sees the variety of pastries to choose from.

"Pick one, Doll." He states, kissing her temple, he chuckles as she goes to the employee, asking for a chocolate eclair.

The hazel eyed girl comes back, holding it up for Bucky to see, "There were too many choices to choose from." She states, "But the eclair won."

They walk outside and sit at a small table, so Mary can finish her pastry. Scuffling draws Bucky's attention away from Mary, turning his head to the alleyway, "I'll be right back, Doll." He tells her, she nods, humming in reply as she finishes her treat.

Bucky stands up, walking over to the alleyway, hearing a thud and swearing, he carefully draws his gun from the holster he had it on.

"Buck! It's just us!" Steve states quietly, not wanting anymore attention drawn to them, especially Mary.

Bucky groans, "What the hell are you doing here?" He asks, "Mary's waiting for me."

Dum Dum steps out into the light along with the others, "We want to see the Little Miss get engaged, Barnes." He states, chorus of agreement follows his statement.

Bucky sighs, pinching the bridge of his nose, "Steve.. i told you to keep it a secret until after we got back."

"I know.. it just slipped out." Steve murmurs.

Mary looks around, whatever Bucky was doing was taking longer than she anticipated, standing up, she walked to where she saw him turn, "James?" She calls out.

Bucky curses, then looks back at the men, "Fine. Just not a word, and keep your distance." He states, jogging back to Mary.

"I'm here, sorry, i heard something back here, it was a cat, but i didn't want to take any chances." He tells her, wrapping his arm around her as she nods.

"Alright. Where to now?" She asks.

"The town square isn't too far from here, and i heard music playing, i thought we should go dancing." He replies, smiling down at her.

"Oh that sounds like fun! I haven't been dancing since the night you left." She states.

As the couple walks down the pathway, the Commando's and Captain America follow them, trying to not have their nurse spot them.

Once they reach the town square, they see a fountain in the middle, Mary grins, "Let's make a wish." She suggests, pulling out a coin from her small clutch that she had brought with her.

Her boyfriend nods, walking them up to the fountain, Mary shuts her eyes tightly, making her wish, then tosses the coin into the fountain. She hands another coin to Bucky.

He shakes his head, "No thanks, i've got everything i want right here in front of me." He states, pushing a loose strand of hair out of Mary's face, looking at her. His hand goes into his pocket as she looks away from him to look around the scenery.

He gets down on one knee, opening the box, as Mary turns to look at Bucky, she jumps, gasping at the sight of her boyfriend.

Bucky opens the box to reveal a beautiful ring that he had picked out months ago.

"Mary, when we met, i didn't know that you would become the center of my world. You've given me so many moments i can look back on and know that God placed me in your life and you in mine for a reason." He tells her, her hazel eyes become clouded as Bucky speaks to her, she already has her answer for him, but she lets him continue.

"Every night we count the stars, but i count how many times you've made me smile, how many times you've stitched me back up, how many times you've brought joy into my dull life, because without you? Live isn't worth living." He goes on, "So Mary Elizabeth Rogers, my life, my heart, my Little Nurse. Will you do me the highest honor and marry me?" He asks.

Mary nods, words not being able to form at the moment, she nods, wrapping her arms around her fiancé, "Yes." She murmurs to him, he slides the ring onto her left ring finger, sitting perfectly on her hand. He looks her over, smiling at her.

Mary can't stop grinning at Bucky, she looks at him, then runs her fingers through his hair as she places her lips onto his own, he kisses her back, molding together like the were made for each other.

Hoots and hollers come from close by, shocking Mary. The couple breaks away, seeing Steve and the Commandos race to them.

Steve picks her up by the waist and swings her around, "My sister is engaged!" He exclaims, laughing. He sets her down gently, the Commandos grin as they see the looks on the couples face, sheer bliss.

Steve looks up into the sky as Mary and Bucky are dancing to the music playing in the street, smiling a bit as a snowflake hits his cheek.

Dear Peggy,

Today is a day that i never thought would happen in all my life. I'm to marry James Buchanan Barnes later this today in a small church just outside of Florence.

I wish you could be here to be my Maid of Honor so much. Because you would've been the best at it. We're coming close to our last mission, the boys just got word from Phillips that they have one more, but the details haven't been disclosed yet.

The ring Bucky got me is absolutely gorgeous, i have no idea how much he spent on it, he wont say because he knows i'll tell him to take it back and get a less expensive ring.

Bucky had told me that Steve helped distract me while he picked out the ring. It makes sense now why Steve practically dragged me into the dress shop that was next door to the jewelry store Bucky had purchased my ring.

I promise to tell you everything when we are home and done with the missions. I also hope you see the video we took for you and the SSR to see how we're doing. Steve had asked me to find a picture of you before we left, i didn't know what he needed it for until i saw his compass with your picture in it.

I've always had a hunch that he liked you, i just hope you do as well.

All my love,
Mary, soon to be Barnes

Mary folds the letter to Peggy up, smiling as she puts it in the mail box outside the church, Steve steps into her small changing room, seeing her in the dress she picked out with him on his birthday.

"You look beautiful Lizzie." He tells her, he's wearing his nicest clothes, all the Commando's are.

Dum Dum insisted he be Mary's man of honor in Peggy's place, Steve is walking his sister down the isle and being Bucky's best man.

She stands up, smiling at him, "I still can't believe this is happening.." she murmurs, grabbing her small bouquet of lilies.

"You? What about me! I'm about to be the only remaining Rogers." Her brother teases.

"Oh shush, I'll hyphen my last names, Rogers-Barnes." She states, "You can't get rid of me that easily."

As the siblings approach the doors to the sanctuary, Mary's grip on her brother tightens, "Don't let me fall."

"Never." He replies, pulling her into a hug, "I'll always be there to catch you."

He releases her as the doors open, Mary grins as she locks eyes with Bucky. Steve leading her down the isle.

All the Commandos stand up in the pew they're in, they all smile as they see their precious little nurse walk down the isle to become the wife of their second in command.

Steve kisses Mary's forehead as he gives her to Bucky, going to stand behind behind him as Mary laughs, handing her bouquet to Dum Dum.

"Thank you, Dugan." She whispers, Dum Dum smiles, "Anytime." He replies.

The pastor begins to speak to the group, but Mary and Bucky can't stop looking at each other.

Bucky is mesmerized by Mary, her hair is curled and pinned, just like the night of the Expo. She's wearing her pearl white dress that Steve convinced her to buy the night Bucky purchased her ring. He felt bad not having his mother's ring to give to Mary, but he felt that she needed a ring when he asked her to marry him, and he didn't want to risk losing his Mother's ring when he got deployed with the one-o-seventh infantry.

Mary was looking at Bucky, his hair had gotten a little longer, all the boys had, she made a mental note of cutting their hair after she and Bucky are back from their very short honeymoon.

Phillips had been notified that the two had gotten engaged, and gave the couple a two day honeymoon.

She looked over his suit, it was his Army suit, the very same one he wore as he saved Steve from the bully behind the theater.

The pastor then instructs Bucky to repeat after him.

"I, James Buchanan Barnes, take thee, Mary Elizabeth Rogers, to be my lawfully wedded wife,

to have and to hold,

from this day forward,

for better or for worse,

for richer or for poorer,

in sickness and in health,

to love and to cherish,

till death do us part,

according to God's holy ordinance; and thereto I pledge myself to you." Bucky repeats after the pastor, smiling, his blue eyes clouding with tears as he vows himself to the love of his life.

Then it's Mary's turn. She looks at Bucky, smiling, squeezing his hands tightly, she then repeats after the pastor.

"I, Mary Elizabeth Rogers, take thee, James Buchanan Barnes, to be my lawfully wedded husband,

to have and to hold,

from this day forward,

for better or for worse,

for richer or for poorer,

in sickness and in health,

to love and to cherish,

till death do us part,

according to God's holy ordinance; and thereto I pledge myself to you." Mary repeats after the pastor.

"Do you, James Buchanan Barnes, take Mary Elizabeth Rogers as your lawfully wedded wife, until this day forward, til death parts you?" The pastor asks.

Bucky nods, "I do."

Mary grins as the pastor turns to her, "Do you, Mary Elizabeth Rogers, take James Buchanan Barnes as your lawfully wedded husband, until this day forward, til death parts you?" The pastor asks her.

She nods, "I do."

"May i have rings?" The pastor asks, Dum Dum and Steve step forward, handing the rings to the pastor, he then hands the rings to Mary and Bucky.

Bucky takes Mary's ring, holding her left hand, "With this ring, I thee wed myself to you, my love, my life, my Precious Little Nurse." He tells her, sliding the wedding band onto her finger.

Mary smiles, tears fall from her hazel eyes, she whispers to him "I love you." Bucky smiles, repeating her, "And I love you."

The nurse then takes Bucky's ring, holding his left hand, "With this ring, i wed myself to you, my heart, my soul, my Beloved Sarge." She states, sliding the wedding band onto his finger.

The pastor nods, smiling in approval, "With the power vested in me by Jesus Christ our Lord. I now pronounce you, husband and Wife." He states, "You may now kiss-" The pastor is cut off as Bucky pulls Mary to him, pressing his lips to hers, sealing their marriage and vows to each other.

The two become lost in their own world, only to be brought out of it by the Commandos shouting and hollering cheers to the now married couple.

Bucky and Mary break apart, looking at each other, grinning, then look to their friends. Steve steps forward, wrapping his arms around Mary, "Does this mean i have to bunk with the guys now?" He teases, pointing to the fact that his sister and new brother will most likely want to sleep together in their own tent.

Mary laughs, "Sorry Stevie." She replies.

Bucky comes behind his wife, smiling at the thought of being married to her, "Let's go celebrate with the guys." He suggests, the nurse nods, "I like that plan." She states, excited to spend the rest of her life with her husband.

They're married! Ugh i feel like this chapter crammed a lot into it. But i'm happy with how this chapter turned out. Chapter 12 is not one i'm looking forward too though.. just putting it out there.

The song i chose to add to this chapter i feel really captures Bucky and Mary. Hunger by Ross Copperman is such a good song. I first heard it when i was watching Vampire Diaries, Damon and Elena's last dance as Nina Dobrev left the show. I just love this song so much.

Also the picture above is Mary's dress, front and back, and her engagement ring.

Love you all! Thank you so much for reading Timeless!
