08. I Thought He Was Smaller
Later that same day, Steve had decided he wanted to draw with Mary, bypassing the time at the camp they were being stationed in by Senator Brandt.
Mary had always loved when Steve would draw, he was a natural talent at it, she admired how her would look at things differently in the world when he'd draw, or sketch.
Her brother opens his sketch book and sees the drawing he did of Mary and Bucky when she was fourteen and Bucky was Seventeen. Causing him to smile, "Remember this one?" He asks.
Mary nods, "How could i forget my amazing pose?" She teases.
"Draw me, Stevie!" A fourteen year old Mary Rogers asked her brother, they were sitting outside the apartment complex they lived in, their friend Bucky had gone to get some snacks for the trio down at the general store just up the block.
A sixteen year old Steve Rogers laughed at his sisters antics as she kept changing her face from silly to serious, and then back to silly.
"Alright, Lizzie." He states, grabbing his notebook and pencils, Mother had saved up her money and gotten him nice pencils to color and draw with, while Mary pooled her money with Bucky to get Steve a nice book to draw in a few years back.
"Stand over at the corner of the railing." He instructs her, Mary nods, rushing to where he told her to go, giving him the most crazy pose she can think of in the moment.
Her left arm above her head while her right hand is perched on her hip, her left leg slightly bent, she also includes her tongue sticking out at him and one of her eyes closed, winking at him.
Her brother laughs loudly at the sight of his sister, he then starts to sketch her, meanwhile Bucky is walking up the stairs with the small amount of snacks he was able to get for the trio. He sees Mary and can't help him self but to laugh, causing Mary to jump at the new voice.
"James!" Mary scolds, ever since the two met, Mary refused to call him by his nickname in his presence. She loved his first name James, swearing to him that she would only ever call him by that when he's in the same room as her.
Bucky hated it at first, preferring to be called by his nickname, but he soon caved, seeing how happy it made the little hazel eyed girl when she would use his first name.
"You nearly startled me out of my pose!" She scolds him, then resuming her ridiculous face for her brother to sketch.
Bucky apologizes to the girl, then its beside Steve, watching him work, "you know you could make a living off of sketching people, Stevie." He states.
Steve shrugs, "I only like it as a hobby.." the brother trails off, continuing to focus on his sister.
Mary huffs, "You like it more than a hobby. You just don't see it bringing in enough money to support us." She corrects him.
The brother nods, sighing, "That's also true."
Bucky places his hand on Steve's shoulder, causing him to look at the slightly older boy, "You'll make something out of this. I guarantee it." He states, setting the snack on the ground, standing up, going over to Mary, standing slightly behind her and copying her pose.
"Am I doing this right?" He asks the girl, she looks him over, shaking her head, she grabs Bucky's left arm and throws it over his head.
She giggles, "Now it's perfect." She states, going back to looking at Steve
The blue eyed brother laughs, adding Bucky to the sketch as the day progresses.
Steve goes through the pages of his sketch book, finding a blank page. He starts to sketch a monkey dressed in Steve's Captain America costume on a unicycle, Mary frowns as it starts to rain, pulling out her umbrella, holding it over the two of them, not wanting her brothers sketch to be ruined.
"I have something to tell you, Stevie." Mary says to him, smiling a bit. Her brother looks at her, raising an eyebrow, "Oh?" He asks.
"You know James and I have been writing to each other since he left.." she trails off, Steve's smile broadening as he figures out where his sister is going with this conversation.
"Yes, i do know about that." He states, looking at her.
"Well, James's last letter.. He officially asked to go steady with me, to be his girlfriend." She blurts out, her face becoming hot under her brother's gaze.
Steve grins, pulling her over to him, "I'm so happy for you two." He tells her, "i've been waiting since the night of the Expo."
Mary nods, smiling, relieved to have finally told her brother, watching him go back to his sketch.
A little while later, the siblings hear footsteps approaching behind them, Mary turns to look over her shoulder, grinning, "Peggy!" She exclaims, rushing carefully to the woman, wrapping her arms around her, Peggy returns the gesture, smiling brightly at the young girl.
"I've missed seeing your smile everywhere i turn, Mary." Peggy states.
"And i've missed seeing you punch Hodge." Mary replies, causing both girls to laugh.
Peggy looks at Mary, the girl nods, "Go say hi, he's missed you like crazy." She tells Peggy.
The two women nod, walking over to Steve, Mary sits back down next to her brother. Peggy walks up beside them.
"Hello, Steve." Peggy's accent comes out shining, causing Steve to look over his shoulder, his eyes widening as he takes in seeing Peggy.
"Hi." He breathes out, at a loss for words.
Mary looks between them, then back at Peggy, "What are you doing here?" She asks.
"Officially, i'm not here at all." She tells Mary, then looks at Steve, "That was quite the performance."
Steve blushes, glancing down at his sketch, "Yeah. Uh... I had to improvise a little bit. Crowds I'm used to are usually more uh... twelve." He murmurs, scratching his neck.
"I understand you're "America's New Hope?" Peggy asks, Mary nods.
"Bond sales take a ten percent bump in every state we visit." Mary tells her, Steve nods in agreement.
"Is that Senator Brandt's doing?" She asks, the siblings nod again.
"At least he's got me doin' this. Phillips would have had be stuck in lab." The brother mutters, continuing to sketch.
"And these are your only two options? A lab rat or a dancing monkey? You were meant for more than this, you know?" Peggy asks, Steve goes to respond, but he hesitates, causing Peggy to be confused, "What?" She asks.
Steve glances around, then back at Peggy, "You know for the longest time I dreamed about coming overseas and being on the front lines. Serving my country. I finally get everything I wanted, and I'm wearing tights." He mutters, a honking of a truck breaks them out of their conversation, Mary looks over first, her heart clenches at the sight of men, soldiers, being pulled out of the truck on stretchers.
"They look like they've been through hell." Mary mutters, Steve nodding in agreement.
Peggy sighs, "These men more than most. Schmidt sent out a force to Azzano. Two hundred men went up against him and less than fifty returned. Your audience contained what was left of the one-o-seventh. The rest were killed or captured." Peggy informs them.
The siblings eyes widen as Peggy says one-o-seventh. "The one-o-seventh?" Mary whispers. Bucky saying his orders the day in the alleyway come flooding back to her and Steve
"You get your orders?"
"The one-o-seventh. Sergeant James Barnes. Shipping out for England first thing tomorrow."
Mary stands up quickly, Steve mimicking her movements, Peggy's confused, "What?" She asks the two of them.
"Come on!" He yells. Steve grabbing Mary's hand and starts running to Colonel Phillips' tent with Peggy in toe.
When they reach the tent, Steve and Mary walk up to Phillips side by side, "Colonel Phillips." The siblings say in unison, catching both of them off guard briefly but shake it off.
Phillips looks up from his paperwork on his desk, "Well, if it isn't the Star-Spangled Man With A Plan. And what is your plan today?" He asks Steve, then turns to Mary, "And what about you Little Nurse?" He quips, Mary's heart clenches as he says that, remembering the letters Bucky signed, his new nickname for her.
Mary places her hands on his desk, "We need the causality list from Azzano." She states impatiently.
He looks up at the girl, "You dont get to give me orders, girl." He snaps.
Steve steps up, "We just need one name. Sergeant James Barnes from the hundred-o-seventh." He states.
Phillips narrows his eyes at the two siblings, then points to Peggy, "You and I are gonna have a conversation later that you won't enjoy." He states.
Mary becomes impatient, stamping her foot on the ground, "Please tell me if he's alive, sir. B-A-R-"
"I can spell." Phillips cuts her off, sighing, looking down at his paperwork on his desk, "I have signed more of these condolence letters today than I would care to count. But the name does sound familiar. I'm sorry."
Mary gasps, fighting back the cloudiness forming in her eyes, "No.."
Steve hesitates, his eyes glance down at the floor for a split second, he looks back at Phillips, "What about the others? Are you planning a rescue mission?" He asks.
"Yeah, it's called winning the war." Phillips replies, making Steve and Mary upset.
"If you know where they are. Why not at least-?"
"They're thirty miles behind the lines Through the most heavily fortified territory in Europe. We'd lose more men than we'd save. But I don't expect you to understand that, because you're a chorus girl." Phillips snaps at Steve.
The brother's jaw clenches, his blue eyes narrow at Phillips, Mary looks over at the map, seeing where the other part of the hundred-o-seventh is, nudging Steve briefly. His eyes glance at the map, nodding.
"I think I understand just fine." Steve replies.
"Well then understand it somewhere else. If I read the posters correctly, you and tour sister have some place to be in thirty minutes." He states to the siblings.
They both look at each other and nod, Steve looking back at Phillips as the Colonel walks away, "Yes sir we do." He states, Steve grabs Mary's hand the both walk out of the tent and back to their own.
"If you plan on going to get them back, then i'm coming to." Mary states, quickly putting on jacket as Steve begins to change into better clothing to get the men back from behind the lines.
Steve looks at her, "No, Lizzie, i wont allow you to get hurt like that." He states, putting on a leather jacket.
"I can help! I'm a nurse for everyone not just you, Steve." She snaps, "If there is any chance at saving James, you will not stop me." She snaps again, Steve's eyes widen briefly, seeing the fire and determination in her hazel eyes.
He nods, "Alright." He states, "But you will have a gun in case of protection and i'm not there, are we clear?"
"Crystal." She replies, quickly braiding her hair and tying it up into a bun. Peggy soon walks into the tent, "What do you two plan to do? Walk to Austria?"
"If that's what it takes." Steve replies, packing some things into a small bag on his belt.
Peggy sighs, "You heard the Colonel, your friend is most likely dead." She states. Wincing at Mary's facial expression before it changes back to one of determination.
"You don't know that." Mary states, packing her medical supplies into a small enough bag to fit around her waist. Walking outside of the tent with Steve.
"Even so, he's devising a strategy. If he detects-" Peggy starts, but Steve is quick to stop her.
"By the time he's done that, it could be too late!" He exclaims, putting his stuff into a jeep, Mary doing the same, she looks back at Peggy, sighing a bit.
"You told me you thought I was meant for more than this. Did you mean that?" He asks Peggy.
"Every word." She states with confidence.
"Then you gotta let us go. Let me go." He replies, climbing into the jeep, starting it, but Peggy walks towards him, her hands on the car.
"I can do more than that." She tells him, causing the siblings to look at each other, confusion written on their faces.
Next thing Mary knows, she's sitting on a plane, piloted by Howard Stark, sitting next to her brother and across from Peggy with a map on her lap explaining where the infantry are being held.
Steve and Mary both are putting parachutes on themselves, "The HYDRA camp is in Krausberg, tucked between these two mountain ranges. It's a factory of some kind." Peggy informs them.
Howard from the cockpit yells, "We should be able to drop you two right on the doorstep."
Steve nods, tightening his parachute, then turns to tighten Mary's "Just get us as close as you can." He states, then looks up at Peggy, "You know, you two are gonna be in a lot of trouble at the lab."
Peggy raises an eyebrow, concerned more for Steve and his sister than her own safety, "And you two wont?"
Steve cracks a smile, "Well, where i'm goin', if anybody yells at me, i can just shoot them back."
Peggy shakes her head, "They'll undoubtedly shoot back." She reminds the two.
Mary knocks on Steve's shield, "Well then hopefully this'll be good for something." She says.
"Agent Carter, if we're not in too much of a hurry I thought we could stop off in Lucerne for a late night fondue." Howard states from the cockpit, Peggy looks away from the two siblings awkwardly. Steve and Mary look at each other quizzically.
The two ready themselves to jump out of the plane, Mary looks at Steve, "You'll catch me, right?" She asks, he nods.
"Always."
Peggy speaks up, "Stark is the best civilian pilot I've ever seen. He's mad enough to brave this airspace, we're lucky to have him." She states to them, but mostly Steve.
Steve shifts awkwardly in his seat, "So are you two.." he trails off, "Do you.." he shifts in his sear again, "Fondue?" He asks Peggy.
Mary stifles a laugh, but Peggy just ignores Steve being flustered and hands him and Mary both a box.
"These are your transponders." She states, the two nod, "Activate it when you're ready and the signal will lead us straight to the both of you."
Steve looks the transponder over, "You sure this thing works?" He asks.
"It's been tested more than you!" Howard quips from his seat driving the plane.
The plane soon starts to be attacked, rocking it back and forth, Mary grips onto Steve, he readies the two of them to jump.
Peggy grabs Steve's hand, "Get back here! We're taking you all the way in!"
"As soon as we're free, you turn this around and get the hell out of here!" Steve shouts as the door opens for the siblings to jump.
Peggy looks at Steve shocked, "You can't give me orders!"
Steve smirks, "The hell i can't! I'm a Captain!" He shouts, grabbing hold of Mary tightly, kissing her forehead as he looks at Peggy one last time before they jump out of the plane, both deploying their parachutes.
A/N: i was going to leave it here.. but i changed my mind, so enjoy!
The siblings rush through the thick forest, seeing HYDRA guards everywhere, they crouch down behind bushes to get a better look at how to get in. Steve notices a HYDRA truck advancing past them, he forms a plan in his mind and picks Mary up, his arms securely around her waist and legs as he runs to catch the truck, setting her in it as he jumps in.
Mary looks over, widening her eyes as HYDRA agents look over at the two siblings, "St- Steve." She stutters out.
Steve notices the agents, sighing, "Fellas."
Steve quickly shoves Mary out of the way as he and the two HYDRA agents fight, Steve gets the upper hand and knocks them out. Mary rushes to the agents and pushes them out of the truck. Dusting her hands off. Looking at Steve, "We make a good team." She teases quietly.
The two sit in the truck, waiting for it to stop, it passes by the entrance check point, the truck jerks, nearly throwing Mary off her seat but Steve grabs her just in time. Soon the truck is moving backwards, Steve looks at Mary, "Get on my back." He tells her, "And dont let go." He adds.
Mary nods, doing as she's told, getting onto her brothers back, wrapping her arms around his neck and her legs around his waist, she pulls out the gun Steve gave her before they left, "I can cover your back." She teases.
Steve places his shield in front of his head, in a crouched position, the tarp opens up, Steve sees a HYDRA agent look at the shield, her brother quickly hits the agent with his shield, sending the man flying backwards.
Steve hops out of the truck carefully, quickly adjusting Mary on his back, "I'm good, Stevie." She tells him, he nods, then runs off past the trucks and through the field of trucks not in use.
Steve sees a brick building, using a tank to climb up onto the roof, he hoists himself up, jogging on the roof towards the main building. "Holy cow." Mary whispers to Steve, shocked and scared of the massive size of the base.
The two make their way down hallways and corridors, Mary flanking her brothers back as she's still securely attached to him. They come up to a door, Steve sees an agent guarding close to the door.
Mary gets an idea and knocks on the door, drawing the agents attention towards them. The agent opens the door, and Steve quickly slams the door against the agents head, knocking him unconscious and steals the agents gun, "Nice plan, Sis." Steve tells her quietly, earning a grin from his sister.
Steve enters the room quietly, walking past the guards quickly, squeezing carefully between the cargo, as they step out from between the cargo, the siblings see weapons of some type glowing a bright blue. Steve walks up to the table, picking up a small cartridge with the blue light glowing out of it.
He quickly pockets it, and they quickly hurry to exit the room. They eventually come to a room full of cages, Steve walks quietly behind an agent, taking him out quickly. Earning the attention of the soldiers locked in the cages. Mary hops off Steve's back, grabbing the keys from the agent.
An American solider in the cell below them looks up, "Who are you two suppose to be?" He asks.
Steve hesitates, looking at Mary for help, she looks down at the men, "He's Captain America, and i'm his kickass sister Mary Rogers." She states proudly.
Another man in the same cage looks at the two with a confused look on his face, "I beg your pardon?" The second man asks with his British accent.
Steve hops down from above the cages, Mary soon follows, jumping into his hands as he catches her, setting her down on the ground.
Mary soon begins to unlock all the cage doors, soldiers start to come out of the cages, "Is there anybody else?" She asks the soldiers.
"We're looking for Sergeant James Barnes." Steve points out to them.
The solider Mary and Steve had met with the British accent replies to the siblings, "There's an isolation ward in the factory, but no one's ever come back from it."
Mary nods, hope swelling in her chest, looking at Steve, "All right. The tree line is northwest, 80 yards past the gate. Get out fast and give 'em hell. Mary and I will meet you guys in the clearing with anybody else we find." The brother states
One of the other soldiers starts to run with the others then looks back, "Wait! You know what you two are doin?" He asks them.
Steve nods, Mary climbing back onto his back, securing her legs around his waist and arms around his neck. "Yeah. I've knocked out Adolf Hitler over two hundred times." He states.
Mary laughs, "He's not lying!" She exclaims back at the soldiers and the two siblings make their way towards the isolation ward.
As they make their way, an alarm goes off, Steve fights off agents one by one, coming to a bridge scaffolding, kicking an agent over the railing.
Mary climbs down from Steve's back when they know they know they're alone for the time being, rushing into the isolation ward, gasping as she sees Bucky.
She runs over to him, Steve following close behind. "Bucky? Oh my gosh.." Steve mutters, quickly ripping the straps off of him.
"Steve..?" Bucky murmurs, not yet seeing Mary
Steve nods, "Yeah, Buck, it's me."
"Just how strong are you Stevie?" She asks him.
"Strong enough to say you're light as a feather." He teases back, helping Bucky up from the table.
Mary quickly looks him over, "They've done something too him, i don't know what though." She mutters.
Bucky finally sees Mary, looking her over, "Little Nurse?" He mutters, the girl nods, smiling, "Yeah Sarge, i'm here too."
"You shouldn't be here, it's too dangerous." Bucky stammers out, forgetting about his own pain, looking at Mary.
Mary shakes her head, "I'm not going anywhere, James."
"Come on. We have to move." Steve states to the two of them. Helping Bucky stand on his feet, Mary quickly going to the other side of Bucky.
Mary looks at Bucky, kissing his cheek quickly, "We thought you were dead." She states
Bucky smiles briefly, then looks over Steve, "I thought he was smaller." He mutters.
Steve looks up, seeing a map of other HYDRA bases. Making a note in his mind of where they are.
The trio make their way out of the isolation ward. "What happened to you?" Bucky asks Steve.
"I joined the Army."
"Did it hurt?"
"A little."
"Is it permanent?"
"So far."
The three make their way to the scaffolding once more, being jerked by explosions going off, Steve and Bucky both cover Mary from any flying debris.
As they reach a scaffold bridge, a man is standing at the other end, "Captain America! How exciting!" He shouts, his German accent thick, "I'm a huge fan of your films."
Steve starts to walk onto the bridge, the other man doing the same, Bucky places Mary behind him protectively, "No one will touch you." He murmurs to her. She nods slowly.
"So Dr. Erskine managed it after all. Not exactly an improvement, but still impressive." The German man states, as he reaches Steve, making Mary wince briefly at the mention of her mentor.
Steve narrows his eyes, throwing a punch to the man's face, "You've got no idea."
The German man recoils, his hand going to his jaw, "Haven't I?" The man questions, throwing a punch towards Steve only having Mary's brother lift up his shield, the punch from the man leaving a noticeable dent in the shield, making Steve's eyes widen.
Steve quickly reaches for his gun, but the other man quickly throws another punch at Steve, his fist connecting with Steve's jaw, sending him off his feet.
"Steve!" Mary yells, trying to get to him but Bucky wont let her, holding her tight in his arms, "Don't, Doll. You'll only get yourself hurt." He pleads with her.
Steve is laying on his back on the scaffolding, as the man walks towards him, Steve quickly puts his feet together and kicks the man in the chest, sending him flying backwards.
Another man on the other side of the bridge pulls a lever, separating Steve and the man, explosions continues to go off, closer and closer to them.
"No matter what lies Erskine told you, you see I was his greatest success!" The German man shouts, reaching under his jacket collar, starting to pull on his skin. Mary soon realizes that it was a mask.
The man after a few seconds, pulls off the mask, showing himself to be Red Skull. Mary gasps, "Johann Schmidt." She mutters, putting the pieces together in her mind.
"So he sends the head of HYDRA, his research division. A brilliant scientist by the name of Johann Schmidt. Now, Schmidt is a member of the inner circle and he's ambitious. He and Hitler share a passion for occult power and Teutonic myth. Hitler uses his fantasies to inspire his followers. But for Schmidt, it is not fantasy. For him, it is real. He has become convinced that there is a great power hidden in the earth, left here by the Gods, waiting to be seized by a superior man. So when he hears about my formula and what it can do, he cannot resist. Schmidt must become that superior man." Erskine tells the two siblings.
"Did it make him stronger?" Steve asks.
Erskine nods, "Yes. But, there were other effects. The serum was not ready. But more important, the man. The serum amplifies everything that is inside. So, good becomes great. Bad becomes worse." He explains.
Mary can't help but stare at Schmidt, he had injected himself with an incomplete serum, the side effects causing him to turn into Red Skull.
"Good becomes great. But bad becomes worse." She repeats what Erskine said to the two siblings as she watches Schmidt and Steve closely.
Bucky looks over at Steve hesitantly, "You don't have one those do you?" He asks, gesturing to Schmidt's skinless, red face.
"You are deluded, Captain!" Schmidt shouts as he tosses his mask into the fires below. "You pretend to be a simple soldier, but in reality you are just afraid to admit that we have left humanity behind. Unlike you, I embrace it proudly. Without fear!"
"Then how come you're running?" Steve questions. The trio watch as Schmidt and his sidekick make their escape, Steve scans the area, seeing another part they could walk on.
He quickly ushers Mary and Bucky up the steps as he's behind them, "Come on, let's go. Up." He states, pointing to the catwalk he plans to use to help them escape.
They reach the skinny gantry, everything below them is on fire, "One at a time." Steve states, grabbing Mary and putting her over the railing, indicating that she's first to cross.
Mary turns back at her boys, placing her hands on each of their cheeks, "I love you both." She tells them, Steve smiles a little, nodding.
The nurse makes it half way before her foot slips, she screams as her hands clutch the gantry tightly
"Mary!" Both Steve and Bucky scream her name, Bucky quick to hop over the railing to reach her, careful not to jostle the already weak catwalk.
Mary's fingers start to lose their grip but Bucky grabs her arm, pulling her up to him, wrapping his arms tightly around her, he carries her over to the other side, setting her down, "Don't ever do that again." He mumble to her, placing his hands on each side of her face, kissing her forehead, Mary smiles at the warmth of his lips on her ash covered head, looking up at him.
"I don't plan on ever falling to my death." She teases, causing Bucky to laugh briefly. They turn back to see Steve still on the other side. The gantry had taken too much weight with both Mary and Bucky crossing together and had collapsed.
Bucky looks around for something to help Steve cross, "There's gotta be a rope or something!" He shouts.
"Just go! Get yourself and Mary out of here!" Steve shouts back, pleading with them to just leave him, but Mary is having none of it.
"Not without you, Steven Grant!" She yells at her brother.
Steve hesitates, nodding slowly, he forms a plan in his mind to jump over the chasm separating him from the two people he cares most about in this world.
Mary watches in slow motion as her brother pushes the now broken railing to the side. He backs up to the end of the scaffolding. The explosions are now practically on top of them, Bucky shields Mary from the fire and debris, but she looks over his shoulder to see her brother attempt to jump across the chasm.
"STEVE!" Mary screams in horror, seeing the flames engulf her big brother.
