06. The Man With the Plan

One day later
SSR Compound

Mary's hand tries not to shake as she takes the last of Steve's blood. Steve looks at her, knowing what she's gone through in the last day alone should be enough to cripple someone, but Mary was here, doing her duty as Steve's personal Nurse like Erskine requested.

"Think you have enough?" He asks solemnly to his sister, trying to get her to smile, she hums in response, taking the needle from his arm, pressing the cloth onto his arm with a small amount of tape to hold it.

Peggy looks between the two siblings then speaks, "Any hope of reproducing the program is locked in your genetic code. But without Dr. Erskine, it could take years." She states quietly

Mary hesitates, she knows that's not true, but no one else does, and she intends to keep it that way. Steve stands up, walking over to Peggy and he rolls his sleeve down. "He deserved more than this." He states, taking a look over at his sister as she lets the doctor with her take the blood samples away.

Mary looks over, "If it could only work once, he'd be proud it was you." She said to Steve, walking over to him and Peggy, she glances down at the nurse uniform she's in, pure white dress with the bonnet to match

Steve sighs, looking down at his sister, he nods, glancing down below through the window, seeing Howard Stark, Senator Brandt and Colonel Phillips having a conversation.

Peggy leads the way down the stairs to where the three men are, over hearing part of their conversation she decides to step in.

"HYDRA is the Nazi deep science division. It's led by Johann Schmidt. But he has much bigger ambitions." She states, informing Senator Brandt

Mary stands beside Steve, watching the men converse. Her brother glances down at her shaking form, he wraps an arm around her, holding her close to him as an attempt to stop her shaking.

Phillips nods at what Peggy said, looking at the Senator, "HYDRA's practically a cult. They worship Schmidt, they think he's invincible."

Brandt is impatient, "So what are you gonna do about it?" He asks the Colonel.

Phillips turns away from the Senator, walking towards Peggy, "Spoke to the president this morning. As of today the SSR is being retasked." He states.

Peggy's eyes widen briefly, "Colonel?"

Phillips dismisses her, We are taking the fight to HYDRA. Pack your bags Agent Carter. You too, Stark. You're flying to London tonight." He says to both of them, then turns to Mary, "If Erskine hadn't assigned you to Rogers here, you'd be going with us." He states, causing Mary to gasp.

She quickly looks at Steve, his jaw is locked, his eyes stare down Phillips, Mary knows he wants to go with them, "Sir, if you're going after Schmidt, I want in." Steve states.

Phillips passes by Steve and then turns to look at him, "You're an experiment. You're going to Alamogordo, Nurse Rogers too."

Steve looks at him in disbelief, "The serum worked." He tries to explain to the Colonel.

The Colonel shakes his head, "I asked for an army and all I got was you. You are not enough."

Mary narrows her eyes at the man, waiting til he's out of earshot to say, "Yes he is." Under her breath, causing Steve to smile briefly.

Senator Brandt walks up to the siblings, "With all due respect to the Colonel, I think we may be missing the point. I've seen you in action, Steve. More importantly, the country's seen it." He states, flagging someone down as he says "Paper."

A man comes up, holding out the newspaper with the headline, NAZIS IN NEW YORK, MYSTERY MAN SAVES CHILD.

"The enlistment lines have been around the block since your picture hit the newsstands. You don't take a soldier, a symbol like that, and hide him in a lab." The Senator says, placing his hand on Steve's shoulder, walking him away from Mary, "Son, do you want to serve your country on the most important battlefield of the war?"

Steve glances back at Mary, she knows what this could mean for her brother, becoming America's beacon of hope for everyone, she nods, giving him a small thumbs up in the process.

The blue eyed brother turns back to the Senator, "Sir, that's all I want." He states simply.

Senator Brandt smiles, shaking Steve's hand, "Then, congratulations. You just got promoted."

Weeks later, Steve is standing back stage, he's wearing a red, white and blue outfit with a star on the chest, he's staring at himself in a mirror. Mary is behind him, sitting on a stool, watching him.

"I don't know if i can do this." He murmurs, turning to look at Mary. She goes to say something, but Senator Brandt's aide cuts her off.

"Nothing to it. Sell off a few bonds, bonds buy bullets, bullets kills Nazi's. Bing bang boom. You're an American hero." He says nonchalantly, Mary rolls her eyes at his statement.

"It's just not how I pictured we'd get there." Steve replies, gesturing between him and his sister, she nods in agreement.

"When Brandt said Steve would become a hero to the American people, he and I both thought that meant going out onto the battle field, not throw shows for entertainment." Mary quips at Brandt's aide.

Brandt ignores Mary, continuing to look at Steve, "The senator's got a lot of pull up on the hill. You play ball with us, you'll be leading your own platoon in no time. Take the shield." He states, Mary tosses Steve his head mask, he thanks her and pulls it on.

Brandt then lightly shoves Steve out of the backstage area and onto the stage as the show begins, Mary walks behind the curtain, to the side of the stage to watch the show.

"Who's strong and brave, here to save the American way?" The singers start the song, Steve looks out of place, he steps forward to say his lines, Mary had written them down on his prop shield so he didn't have to memorize the ridiculous song.

"Not all of us can storm a beach or drive a tank. But there's still a way all of us can fight." Steve says to the audience.

"Who vows to fight like a man, for what's right, night and day?"

"Series E Defence Bonds. Each one you buy is a bullet in the barrel of your best guy's gun."

"Who will campaign door-to-door for America? Carry the flag shore to shore for America? From Hoboken to Spokane, the star-spangeld man with a plan."

Mary closes her eyes, then opens them and she's on a movie set, watching the director yell, "Cut. Guys, don't look at the camera."

Next thing she knows, she's back on the side of the stage watching her brother preforms.

"We can't ignore there's a threat and a war we must win."

Over the months they've been on tour by now, Steve's gotten better at his performance, "Each one you buy is a bullet in the barrel of your best guy's gun." He states with confidence, not needing Mary's notes on his shield anymore.

"Who'll hang a noose on the goose-stepping goons from Berlin? Who will redeem, heed the call for America? Who'll rise or fall, give his all for America? Who's here to prove that we can? The star-spangled man with a plan."

She notices that her brother has started to enjoy the tour bit by bit, enjoying the applause he receives, the pictures he takes with the pretty woman who most likely wouldn't have noticed him before the serum, everything entrances him, and slowly leaves Mary to fall into his shadow.

"We all know this is about trying to win the war. We can't do that without bullets and bandages, tanks and tents. That's where you come in. Every bond you buy will help protect someone you love." Steve says to the audience. A actor playing Hitler walks behind the singers and dancers, eyeing her brother who now goes by Captain America.

Kids in the audience spot the Hitler, jumps from their seats, pointing, yelling at Steve to notice them and turn around.

"Keep our boys armed and ready, and the Germans will think twice about trying to get the drop on us." Steve turns around, pretending to punch Hitler, watching the actor fall to the floor of the stage.

"Stalwart and steady and true, forcefull and ready to defend, the red, white, and blue."

The audience erupts in applause, Steve waves at them. Soon the siblings travel for the tour, going to places like Buffalo, Milwaukee, Philadelphia and Chicago, becoming more and more famous and liked by the public, while Mary is again, left in the shadow of her brother.

"Who'll give the Axis the sack and is smart as a fox?" The siblings receive word that there's now a Captain America comic book being sold to kids and solider alike.

"Far as an eagle will soar. Who's making Adolf afraid to step out of his box? He knows what we're fighting for." Steve sits in a theater next to Mary, watching the motion picture he made months prior, the audience goes crazy for seeing Steve on the big screen

"Who waked the giant that napped in America? We know it's no one but Captain America. Who'll finish what they began?" The tour eventually becomes sold out in New York City, Mary sits in the front row next to Senator Brandt and his aide.

"Who'll kick the Krauts to Japan? The star-spangled man with a plan!" The singers say as Steve lifts a motorcycle with three of the dancers on it, the song comes to and end, fireworks go off in the back of the stage, the audience erupts in cheers and applause for Mary's brother.

The Senator leans next to Mary, "How would Steve like to take the tour to the troops?" He asks, Mary's eyes widen, nodding, "I think he would like that very much, Sir." She replies, standing up and applauding her brother.

Italy, five miles from the front lines
November of 1943

Steve is over looking a crowd of soldiers, who don't particularly want to be there at the moment.

"How many of you ready to help me sock old Adolf on the jaw?" Steve asks the men, he receives nothing but silence from them, he shifts his weight, "Okay. Uh... I need a volunteer." He murmurs into the microphone.

One army solider speaks up from the crowd, "I already volunteered! How do you think I got here?" The man yells.

Others join in, yelling at Steve to bring the girls back, "I think they only know the one song. But um...let me...I'll...I'll see what I can do." He stutters out, Mary hesitates, seeing the crowd of soldiers start to turn on her brother, making fun of his shoes, calling him names.

Steve eventually has enough, "Come on, guys. We're all on the same team here." He pleads with the men.

"Hey, Captain! Sign this!" A heckler yells, pulling down his pants and mooning Steve, then another solider starts throwing tomatoes at him. He raises his shield to deflect it, quickly making his way off the stage.

Mary is waiting for him, Brandt's aide quickly having the girls go back on stage.

Steve takes his head mask off, walking over to his sister, "Was that as bad as i thought?" He asks, sitting next to her.

"Worse." She teases, sighing a bit, pulling her jacket tighter on her, the November weather not doing much to keep her warm.

Steve looks watches her, "I'm sorry I haven't been the best big brother to you over the last months.." he mutters to her, causing her to look up at him.

"What do you mean?" She asks him.

"You know what I mean.. i've left you by yourself all this time, I got caught up in being liked for the first time.." he tells her, wrapping his arms around her, "I'll do better, i'll make sure you're included however you want to be." He suggests.

Mary shakes her head, "At first, i felt needed by you, i made your costume, wrote your words down and taped them to your shield." She lists off.

"I used those for the first ten shows." He retorts, "i really do appreciate you for doing that, Mary.."

"I know you do, I.. I guess I just feel lost in this whole Captain America thing." She tells him, leaning into him, "Where do i fit in in all of this?" She asks, "No one hardly knows I exist, and Brandt's Aide is a jerk." She states, causing Steve to laugh at the last part, nodding, "Yeah, he kind of is for putting you off to the side all the time."

Mary, "You know I'll support whatever happens, Stevie. I kinda have too, it's in the sister rule book." She states, smiling up at him, making him smile down at her.

"Sister rule book, huh?" He asks.

"Oh yeah, book full of rules that sisters get. Brothers have a rule book too you know." She quips back, smirking at him.

"Sure sure." He teases, hugging Mary a bit tighter, "I love you, Lizzie." He states

Mary smiles at Steve using her old nickname from when they were kids, "I love you too, Stevie."

This was such a difficult chapter to write, the tour being the biggest part and most difficult.

In the movie it's a montage of months focusing on the tour Steve does as the Star Spangled Man With A Plan song plays through the whole scene and ending with Steve in Italy talking to the troops.

I think i'm really happy with this chapter, it came out good, and I felt it was needed to add a little Stevie and Mary sibling talk, because during the tour, Steve becomes #1, leaving Mary in his shadow, making her feel left out and unwanted by the people around her now. So i wanted to have them fix that before the next chapter.
