Peter Messed Up

Oh yeah, you were in Health class. A total ocean of boredom. You were supposed to be working on your debate about diseases but instead, you were watching the good old news. I know, that's what old ladies do. But it was interesting.

Why?

Spiderman. Period dot with an exclamation point and a bunch of shocked emojis. Big shocker.

But seriously, he was holding a boat together that was split in half. How did that even happen? If only Peter was here, he and Ned were super obsessed with Spiderman. And now... how was he even doing it? You concluded a while ago, a couple of weeks after the hero first appeared, that he had super strength. But to what extent? Obviously, he could hold a boat that was full of water together. And he wasn't very good at it.

You had your screen split so that every time the teacher walked by you could flip it to your already finished paper. You had to resist the urge to make the video on full screen as Iron Man flew into the scene and started fixing the mess spiderman had caused. You were basically internally fangirling because that was Tony Stark!

Well aware of what was happening, you left the class as it had finished. You hurried to the detention room to see if Peter had returned. Which he hadn't but whatever. That was his problem, not yours. And seeing as it was his problem and his problem only you took it upon yourself to fix it by leaving school as soon as the last bell rang.

Pulling out your phone, you shot him a text, asking where he was. After a few minutes of it being left unread, you decided to hunt him down by going to his house. You waited and waited and waited. You went home first, ate dinner and continued to wait before going over there.  Of course, you'd been there enough to find it on your own. It only took a few minutes to get to the apartment.

You took the elevator up, finding yourself on his home floor. You scurried up to the front door where you paused. Not even knocking.

You could hear inside. But nothing was really going on. It sounded like May was cleaning, maybe dishes or something. But no talking whatsoever. You gathered up the courage to raise your hand to the door frame and rapping your knuckles against it. You heard something break and May cursing aloud to herself. Then you heard her footsteps coming closer and closer till she finally opened the door.

"Y/n!" She said in surprise. "Hi? What are you doing here?" She asked kindly, adjusting her large glasses that were drawing near the end of her nose.

"Hi, May. Um.. is Peter here?" You asked. May's smile faltered slightly.

"Oh... You know, he's not really having a great day right now. I think he wants to be alone. Did you text him?" She asked, tilting her head slightly.

"Yeah, I did, its unread." You reported. "Is something wrong? What happened?"

"Maybe he'll talk to you. It just... he just lost something important to him. He won't tell me much." May replied. "He just now got home."

"Yeah, I'll talk to him if he'll let me. But I can leave-"

"No no, it's fine. Come on in." May let you inside the apartment. She had you follow her to his bedroom. "You want some eggrolls? They're like... an hour old... actually maybe you don't..."

"I'm fine." You said with a sheepish smile. May nodded and stepped up to his door, giving it a knock.

"Peter? Are you all right? Y/n's here." She said into the door. Peter took a while to respond. The door swung open and there he was, in Hello Kitty pajamas and a white "I Survived my Trip to NYC" T-Shirt.

"Y/n?" He asked hesitantly as he lay his eyes on you. He seemed taken aback. Maybe surprised you were actually there or questioning why you were here a 9 o'clock. "Oh..."

"Can we talk?" You asked shyly.

"Um... Yeah, yeah." He said shortly. "Can she..." Peter looked at May then nodded in the room.

"Leave the door open," May said flatly and walked away.

"Yep." Peter smiled slightly as you entered his room. "Y/N, I'm sorry. I shouldn't have just left like that, I'm sorry I haven't been talking to you, I'm sorry I-"

"Yeah, you should care." Your folded your arms. "I have a dozen questions. Like why I saw you trapped in a cement storage unit in one of my visions back in DC. Or why you actually left detention today."

"Sorry." He sighed. "I... It's hard to explain." He blinked a few times and you realized he was actually holding back tears. One of the superpowers of women was to notice things like that. A special ability.

"Is there something else that's bothering you?" You asked as you both sat on his bed.

"I lost the Internship." He said flatly.

"What?" You asked.

"With Mr. Stark." He continued to clarify. "I just... I messed up." He said.

"Are you ok? How'd it happen?" You faced towards him a little more.

"He... I just... Something happened. Now I have nothing." Peter looked at the floor with watery eyes.

"Is that why you left school today?"

"Part of it, yeah." Peter nodded. You paused to think of what to say.

"Look, Pete, you still have me. And Ned. And maybe MJ. We're your friends, and we always will be." You placed a hand on his shoulder.

"I hate lying to you, you know." He said silently.

"What? Your lying?" You raised an eyebrow.

"Its... nothing. I can't tell you. I just can't." Peter shook his head.

"Does Ned know?" You asked.

"Yes. And he shouldn't. Everything is so messed up about me, you couldn't possibly understand. I'm sorry." You felt a little hurt by his words. Why wouldn't you understand? You were his friend. "It's just that... let me rephrase that. There are things, Y/N, that happens all the time. And... well when you know the things I know, and can do the things I can do... And you don't. That's when the bad things happen. And they happen because of you."

"Your Spider-Man aren't you?" You finally connected the dots. Why he was so sketchy, why he kept secrets, why he always disappeared, and so on. It explained why he was ridiculously strong, why he felt responsible for everything, why he always wanted to hang out but canceled last minute. Your visions were of Peter, but also Spiderman.

He didn't respond, just looked at you in a mix of shock and terror. He studied your face quizically before asking, "Are you joking?"

"No." You were more confident of it now. "I'm not."

"Oh my gosh, I am an idiot." He buried his face in his hands. "I knew you would find out."

"So... not even gonna try and make me think otherwise?"

"Nope."

"Not gonna deny it?"

"Nope."

"Not even gonna ask how I know?"

"Nope."

"Ok then." You ran your fingers through your hair. "Why?"

"Because I know you well enough to know I would make a fool of myself by asking how, why, or denying it at all. And you keep coming to me all worried about what you saw in your visions, and I fear you'll jump to conclusions without knowing. That has been my secret." Peter got up from his bed.

"Are you saying, that you get hit by a car, get shot, beat up, ran over, and almost killed every single day? And you now expect me to be less worried? Peter, I'm never gonna not worry!" You put your hands in your lap. "Peter, why didn't you tell me on your own?"

"Because if you knew then you're more likely to get hurt by one of the people trying to kill me. May doesn't even know. Ned does, but that was an accident." Peter began to pace. "But none of that matters now. The Stark Internship? This was it. And I messed up today. So badly that it cost me Mr. Stark's trust. I'm not Spider-Man anymore."

You got up from the bed and walk towards him, interrupting his pacing. He looked at you, standing in front of him with your hands on your hips. Your face was full of judgment that would make anyone feel self-conscious but he didn't even react.

"That's not true. Your gonna make it through this and be swinging around those streets on your webby things again. As much as I don't like to say it, I saw you as spiderman, now I know. I really wish it won't come true but I already know, that at some point your gonna be surrounded by flames, covered in blood, and lying in the sand. As spiderman." You felt your cheeks heat up, and tears brim your eyes. "Your gonna get back on your feet for me ok?"

He nodded. "Of course. Your right. And the vultures still out there..."

"Is that the creepy bird guy?" You asked.

"Sure." Peter nodded. "I just wish I had a normal life." He said after a moment. He moved past you and continued his pacing. Just as before, you stepped in front of him again.

"What would you do if you had a normal life?" You asked. He stopped pacing to think about what you said.

"I would maybe hang out with you and Ned more. And... try and ask Liz out to the dance. And-"

'You still haven't done that? After my amazing advice, you can't manage to ask her out? Dude Homecoming is this Friday!" You exclaimed, then shushed yourself so May wouldn't hear.

"Ugh, I know! She probably hates me because of the decathlon thing." Peter walked over to his bed and sat down again. Decathalon... Peter had been there at the monument. He saved your class and caught you from fall to your death. And now you were lecturing him about not asking a girl out. What was wrong with you?

"Thanks for catching me by the way." You said quietly, a bit embarrassed.

"Thanks for worrying about me." He smiled back. You found yourself laughing a bit.

"I assure you we're gonna get you back together. I promise." You said, still standing in the middle of the room. "And if you don't ask Liz out by the end of Tomorrow I won't ever sit with you and Ned at Lunch again!" You teased.

"Fine." Peter chuckled. "Wanna watch a movie?"

"We can't, its a school night." You giggled. "I'll catch you tomorrow."

"Fine. And y/n?" Peter asked as you began to head for the door.

"Hmm?" You hummed.

"Thanks for understanding. And please don't tell anyone."

"Don't worry I will." You stuck your tongue before leaving the room with him chasing after you.

"Y/n really?" He threw you into the couch in a laughing fit.

"Feeling better Pete?" May interjected as you tried to get off the couch but fell on the floor.

"Yes." He said as he helped you up.  "Thanks." He waved you off as you said your goodbyes and headed for the door.

That's what you were there for. If you were in the friendzone might as well make the best of it.
