Sweet Songs and Chiffon

You and Freddie hung out the rest of the afternoon going in and out of your usual antique stores that you hadn't visited in a while. Freddie of course was excited that he had found a light pink chiffon scarf that he insisted on purchasing. He had his heart set on finding the perfect outfit for it this afternoon. He always seemed to be keen on finding at least one item he always loved to wear and seemed to have this drive to prove that he would wear. It reminded you of that hat you and him had bought on your first trip to the Kensington Market together; for a long while he insisted on wearing it with almost every outfit.

It wasn't too long into your short shopping trip that he finally found the rest of his perfect outfit. He had found this old—slightly stained—white sports jacket that he quickly spotted a pair of pants to match with. They were a completely different shade of white but he didn't care, he ran right up to the front desk and seeing him so happy, you purchased them for him. As the two of you left he store he began to call it his town outfit, as every man worth his penny had to have a town outfit.

Quickly the evening began to draw in and you and Freddie rushed back to the college to hear 1984's rehearsal. They were just walking into the practice hall doors when you and Freddie arrived.

"Hiya Fred!" Tim greeted Freddie with a wave.

"Hello dear," Freddie replied, "Let me introduce you to the love of my life, y/n"

You blushed, gosh did he really think of you that way? Then again, Freddie never did things half-heartedly.

Tim gave you a friendly nod and walked to the side of you as you both entered the decent sized practice room, "Love, now how exactly do you put up with him calling everyone dear and darling all the time?" Tim mused with a laugh

"That's just the bit of his charm I love," you snuggled a bit into Freddie with the side of his head.

"You two," Tim laughed smiling at the both of us, a part of you took some satisfaction in his approval, "Anyway, we've got a great show for you both today. You've gotta give us feedback alright. We've got battle of the bands tomorrow night and we need to be on top of our game. Popularity's one thing but performance is another".

Tim ran up on to the small stage and helped the rest of the boys get their instruments in place.

"Battle of the bands?" you turned to Freddie and asked.

"You've honestly got to keep up on your literature dear," Freddie mused giving you a light playful tap, "I'm just teasing you, I only found about it today really, it's just this big event were bands compete to win in a sort of popularity contest or-something-rather".

Suddenly the loud jarring sound mic feedback swept across the small auditorium. Tim tapped the mic.

"Sorry about that," Tim laughed, "We're just going to do a few warm up songs and then we'll get on to the set we'll be playing. You two just enjoy the show!"

You and Freddie got comfortable in your folding chairs as someone backstage hit the lights and you finally could see all the boys up there. Unmistakably you saw Brian at Tim's side, guitar in hand and smile strewn across his face. He'd grown quite a bit since you last saw him.

Marvin Gaye's "Ain't That Peculiar?" started sounding out of the instruments in front of you. As soon as the beat had started, Freddie's head began nodding keeping the tune, he obviously was enjoying himself already. Tim had a great voice, much better live than any recordings you'd heard of it before. He didn't quite command the stage like Freddie, but he had a great persona.

Brian stood smiling in the back right, the red special in his hand all shiny and new. He seemed happy, strumming out the chords, finally in a band. He had a certain confidence about him.

Freddie suddenly grabbed you by the hand and pulled you up to dance. He was swaying and snapping his fingers to the beat.

"Come on now," said Freddie egging you on, "Move your hips!" he said with a little wiggle towards you.

You started to dance along with him, clapping your hands to the beat as you each circled around each other. You both were smiling and having a great time. The 1984 boys caught on to the same vibe as well and began to play with more of a swing, then putting more of a swing in both you and Freddie's step.

Freddie rushed back to the chair and grabbed his pink chiffon scarf, he then swung it around his neck like some sort of esteemed fashionista, moving his head and shoulders more to add to his new character's charm. He really was having a ball, moving this way and that.

You then grabbed ahold of both ends of the scarf, unwrapping it from around his neck a bit, and shimmying your way closer to him with a smile. He returned the smile with flirty grin and a laugh as you finally pulled him to you. Just as the song was ending you both were embraced in a kiss that just felt warm and bright. The boys up front were clapping and cheering a bit.

"Now what are you all on about?" Freddie laughed

"I thought we were the ones givin' a show tonight!" Tim cracked with a laugh.

"If I'm the high-class entertainment for tonight, you're obviously not doing a very good job of it," Freddie teased.

"Oh, Fuck off Fred," Tim laughed.

"I'm only teasing," Freddie replied, "You boys sound great. Real showstoppers!".

"Seriously, you guys are fabulous! You're gonna win for sure," you chimed in.

"Just wait 'til you hear our set," Tim replied and then started counting off to the first song in the set, "2..3..4".

You and Freddie sat back down in your seats as they began playing "So Sad," by The Everly Brothers. You nestled into Freddie's shoulder as bittersweet chords began to fill the air. Everything suddenly became rather surreal. The early evening light beginning to dim as it came in through the old glass around the wood framed windows. The ancient wood floorboards seemed to grow longer as the music filled your mind and reality drifted further but still felt all so close.

"We used to have good times together

But now I feel them slip away

It makes me cry to see love die

So sad to watch good love go bad"

The smallest teardrop formed in the corner of your eye as the lyrics slowly bore into you. It was one of those moments where you could feel the nostalgia of the future looking back upon this moment.

"Remember how you used to feel, dear?

You said nothing could change your mind

It breaks my heart to see us part

So sad to watch good love go bad"

Freddie could sense your melancholy and grabbed you by the hand. Feeling his warmth helped calm your sadness a bit. You could tell he had a certain sadness too. You had both just been through a rough breakup and now you were back together, but it still left a toll—a toll sadly you knew one day it would leave again.

"Is it any wonder

That I feel so blue

When I know for certain

That I'm losing you"

The song ended and then you remembered. You have now. The future doesn't matter at all. As long as you have now.

There was the briefest moment of silence before "Stone Free" by Jimi Hendrix began and Freddie was back to being over the moon intoxicated with the music.

You were glad you had now.
