engagement
21-8-2020
kuroo's nervous.
fine-dining is quite new to them, with the duration being long and the bills being expensive, but that also means it'll be new, it'll be special, and kuroo intends for this to be a very special night.
"tooru, ready in five?"
"coming!" oikawa calls, walking down the hall, wearing a white dress shirt and his finest black pants. "how do i look?"
"you know, we could just go for a round or two and skip the restaurant," kuroo breathes, taking in how fucking amazing oikawa looks.
"i'd accept that offer if you ever let me try going for two," oikawa snorts, "you overprotective teddy bear. let's go. i've been waiting for this."
"fine," kuroo groans, holding out his arm for his boyfriend. oikawa takes it with a smirk, and they head out.
kuroo has a car now — fucking finally — so they don't have to walk, which is a weight off of oikawa's shoulders.
the drive is short, and as soon as they arrive kuroo jumps out to open oikawa's door for him.
"m'lady," he grins.
"you dork," oikawa snorts, stepping out.
kuroo and oikawa walk towards the restaurant, kuroo checking his coat pocket just to be sure it is still there. once inside, they're seated, and oikawa smiles at kuroo.
"it's really sweet of you to arrange all of this. i appreciate it," oikawa tells him, "you work so hard and i'm grateful."
kuroo takes his hand. "of course," he chuckles, "anything for you."
"no, but really, i'm so dependent on you and you never fail, you always succeed in doing the absolute best and i think you're the most amazing person in the universe. you should know that."
"thank you," kuroo says quietly, "that means a lot to me."
"would you like anything to drink?" a waiter asked, a small, petite blonde with star-shaped hair clips.
"yes, we'd like some champagne?" kuroo suggested, looking up at oikawa.
"fancy," he chuckled, "but yes, sounds good."
"one bottle, blanc de blancs, please," kuroo smiles, and she writes it down, leaving again.
"so, where were me?"
"i'm the greatest person in the universe."
"ah, yes," oikawa chuckles, "exactly."
they talk some more, and order food as the champagne arrives, oikawa marveling at the beverage.
"this is good quality stuff," he comments. kuroo nods in agreement.
"it is, it is," he hums, "by the way, my appli... tooru?"
oikawa's hunched over, elbows on the table, hands in his hair. kuroo can hear him breathe heavily, eyes clenched shut.
"nothing, just a headache," he chuckles nervously, "continue."
"a headache?"
"yeah, it just started pounding. i'm fine. please keep talking."
"how bad is it?"
"b-b... ba.. vewy ba..." oikawa blubbers, his arms shaking slightly.
"we should get you to the hospital," kuroo says, standing up, walking over to him. oikawa attempts to swat his hand away, but ends up falling against him in stead. kuroo lifts him up and carries him out.
there are tears in his eyes. he doesn't let them fall.
"t-te-tets-tetsu-tetsu-tetsu," oikawa speaks over and over again, as if he's scared to stop in case he forgets how to. kuroo kisses his cheek quickly before setting him in the car, buckling up and racing to his own seat.
when he gets in, he catches a glimpse of oikawa. he's shaking slightly still, arms hanging limply next to his sides. kuroo wants to break down, but he can't. he has to drive and that's what he does.
it's seven minutes to the hospital and he carries him in, distraught, to the front desk.
"hi, my boyfriend's has a terrible headache and trouble speaking and he's shaking and his arms are limp an—"
"sir, please calm down. i'll escort you to the emergency room right away," she says, getting up, beckoning for him to follow her down the brightly lit hallway.
"kiyoko-san?" a man in a white coat asks as he sees the woman rush inside the emergency department, "what is it?"
"this man's having a stroke," she announces, grabbing a hospital bed standing to the side.
"you're his brother?"
"boyfriend."
"what happened?"
"we were out for dinner and he suddenly got this awful headache, and started blubbering and shaking and his arms were limp."
"does he have a medical history?"
"tricuspid atresia with multiple failed surgeries."
"it's most likely a blood clot. sir, please stay in the waiting room, we'll take care of him."
"he'll be okay, right?" he demands, holding oikawa close to his chest.
"we'll do our best. please lay him down."
kuroo wants to scream, but he doesn't — he's sensible enough.
he watches them roll oikawa away, more people adding to the group, and eventually turning out of sight.
that's when kuroo breaks. he starts breathing quickly, tears streaming down his face, placing his hands in his hair, trying to keep himself as calm as he can.
"this can't be happening," he whispers to himself.
but it can. and it is.
he fumbles for the small black box in his pocket, opening it and staring at the silver metal inside, and he knows that if he loses oikawa, he loses his mind.
he screams as he throws it against the wall.

"sir? sir?"
kuroo's awakened by a woman from the hospital staff, the same who brought him to the emergency room yesterday. he sits up from his slouched position, running a hand through his hair quickly.
"hi, sorry, i fell asleep," he says apologetically, standing up, "what is it?"
"first off, i found this," she smiles softly, handing him the box he tossed aside yesterday, "and oikawa-san's awake. he asked for you."
"how is he?" he asks as they start walking, stuffing the box into his pocket.
"he's okay. he has no feeling in his left arm, but we predict a speedy recovery, with physical therapy. it was a blood clot preventing his blood from flowing to his brain. it's pretty common amongst tricuspid atresia patients."
"thank god he's okay," kuroo sighs deeply. kiyoko stops in her tracks.
"this is it. he's a little tired, but he should be okay."
"thank you," he nods, taking a deep breath and opening the door.
oikawa's hooked up to a machine with three tubes, as far as kuroo can see, and sitting up. he smiles as soon as he spots his boyfriend, perking up visibly.
"hey, tetsu," he smiles.
"tooru, oh my god, you scared the shit out of me," he says, tears in his eyes, emotions overwhelming him because thank fuck he's still alive.
"i'm sorry," he chuckles, "your hair looks like shit, by the way, without your usual bedhead."
kuroo walks over and wraps his arms around oikawa, crying in to his shoulder, body shaking as he sobs. "i thought you were gonna die, i was so scared, i love you so much so much so much."
"i love you too, tetsu," he replies, one hand in his black hair, the other on his back. "i'm not dying on you just yet. i promise."
"never do, please," kuroo whispers as he pulls away, kissing him twice. "i love you. i don't want to live without you."
"i'm sorry for ruining our date," oikawa says, looking down. "i really am. i feel like crap."
"you could never ruin anything, as hard as you tried," he sighs, "honestly."
"i just... feel bad. because now you probably don't want to do that again. and i do. and it's my stupid body's fault."
"we have long enough," kuroo whispers.
he slowly pulls out the small box from his pocket. oikawa looks up at him.
"tetsu..."
"i was gonna ask you yesterday, in a hopefully more romantic setting, but..." he opens it, revealing the silver ring, one pretty big stone in the middle, "there's many more romantic settings to come. i'll bring them to you. i'll bring anything to you." he bites his lip. "i want to spend my life with you."
"i wouldn't have it any other way," oikawa smiles, pressing his lips against kuroo for the millionth time in his life.

oikawa's released three days later, instructed to take it easy. his left hand is still paralyzed, but his arm's okay already, so they're praying his hand will follow.
they spend the evening cuddled up in bed, mixed with a lot of long, lazy kisses.
"i'm the luckiest man in the universe," kuroo whispers as their lips part for the millionth time.
"i doubt that," oikawa laughed softly, "but if that's what you wanna think..."
"i'm lucky because i get to marry the person i'm in love with. truly in love with. i'm lucky because that's you, and because you love me too."
"that's true," oikawa replies, blushing slightly. "let's get married soon. but... i want it to be, well, not private, but small. close friends and family. and just us after that."
"of course," kuroo chuckles, "does that mean i do get wedding sex?"
"if you ask nicely, i'll consider."
"please?" kuroo pouts, "we almost never have date sex. i think i deserve wedding sex."
"that's what you'll get, if that's what you really want," oikawa chuckles, "but i can't promise a second round."
"i'll just spoil you."
"i'm excited."

after two days of nursing oikawa, the brunet forces kuroo to go out and stop hanging around the house, because "that's my job, tetsu-chan."
so kuroo meets up with bokuto, deciding to go to a small café. kuroo arrives first, of course, and orders for the both of them. luckily for bokuto, he arrives before the coffee gete cold.
"what's up bro?!" bokuto grins, sitting down across from him.
"not much," kuroo shrugs, "my fiancé had a stroke, but eh."
"yeah, what happened?!" bokuto exclaims, eyes wide.
"we were out on a date, and he got a really bad headache and he started shaking, and he couldn't talk..." kuroo sighs, running a hand through his hair. "it was intense. like, i never felt that scared or worried or whatever ever before. i never felt love like that before." he looks away. "if he died back then, i wouldn't have been able to continue. i don't think so, at least."
"i'm glad, bro. i'm glad you found love like that, your boyfriend's something else, for sure."
"fiancé," kuroo corrects.
"oh yeah, fi— what."
"i was gonna propose on our date, but it ended up being in a hospital room," kuroo replies with a lopsided grin. "he still said yes, so i guess i did well."
"bro, you're engaged?!" bokuto shouts, making people turn to them, "like, wedding-engaged? you and oikawa? oh my god oh my god this is the best news ever!"
"yeah, it kinda is," kuroo chuckles, sipping his tea, "i was a little surprised he agreed, since we're pretty young. but then we've been a couple for, like, centuries, so..."
"bro, that's so amazing," bokuto sniffs, wiping away a tear, "i've never been this happy."
"thanks kou," kuroo smiles, "i appreciate it. also, speaking of being engaged, you're the obligatory best man. bring a date."
