Karen Chen/ Chen Xinye

An Australian female was sent back in time from an unusual tornado. She is 48 when she is thrown back, is overweight, with blue eyes and brown hair. She has four children Bryce, Maelgwyn, Carmen, and Venus. She is bought as an enslaved person by General Fang Xin and set free the same day by him. He did not tell her this, just taking her home. Having nowhere else to go, she stayed and ended up marrying Xin.

Fergus James

Venus's friend who was being looked after Karen when the time rip tornado hit. She pretends to be her third son in the past.

Bryce Chen

The oldest boy of Karen marries Xin's sister Min and has two children.

Maelgwyn Chen

The second child of Karen who is transported back in time with his ute and several gallons of petrol that had been tied to the trailer bit of the ute. The ute landed in an English trader's compound, so he was lucky he could explain himself. The ute was quickly sanctioned by the Emperor and used for his errands. The ute had a limited lifespan due to the lack of fuel. It was used in the first war Taiji held, carrying specialised troops. It stopped at the Fang family estate for the wedding of Min and Bryce. Maelgwyn is adopted and trained by Xin Karen's new husband.

Chen Li/ Harjol Borjit

Daughter of Jaisung and Boli. She pretended to be a Eunuch to get to know her intended Hong Taiji. She did not officially meet him for nine years, and when she did, she became his personal eunich until she was due to be his consort. She resigned as Eunuch and returned as his consort. Their relationship started over again as Taiji, not realising she was Li, treated her differently, causing her to disregard his affection. Taiji and Harjol's relationship started making progress with the abduction of Xinye. Although the story is made up certain history is followed. Lady Borjigit gave birth to Hong Taiji's eighth son, who did not live long and died on 13 March 1638. Lady Borjigit was left in weak health and became seriously ill and died three years later. Born 1609 Died October 1641. Married Hong Taiji 1634⁠–⁠1641.

Hong Taiji

Fourth prince of Manchu, later emperor. Employer of General Fang Xin. Husband to Harjol. Born November 1592 died September 1643. Was Jin emperor between October 1626 – 1636. Then Qing emperor 1636 to 1643.

General Fang Xin

First born son of the Fang family. Brother to Min. Bodyguard to Hong Taiji and also General to his armies. Marries Chen Xinye (Karen Chen) and adopts Maelgwyn and Fergus as his sons.

Hong Dudo

15th son of Murachi. Abductor of Fang Xinye. Although he is a real person his role is entirely fictional to suit the story.

Hong Dorgon

Younger half brother of Hong Taiji. During Hong Taiji's reign, Dorgon participated in many military campaigns, including the conquests of Mongolia and Korea (Chosun)in 1636.

In the correct history, "Before Hong Taiji was emperor, he controlled the two White banners. Upon Nurhaci's death, Hong Taiji immediately switched his two White Banners with Nurhaci's two Yellow Banners, which should have been passed on to Dorgon and his brothers. As emperor, he was the holder of three banners out of eight. He controlled the Upper Three Banners or the Elite banners which at the time were the Plain/Bordered Yellow Banners and Plain Blue Banner. Later the Plain Blue Banner was switched by Dorgon to the Plain White Banner as the third Elite Banner." (taken from Wikipedia)  In this story the changing of the banners was due to corruption.

Village girl who helps Xinye with household chores. Gets engaged to Fergus and later marries.

Contract farmer looking after the livestock and fields.

Villiage girl and Grandmother and immediate family

Small family that nursed the twins, however her first child died. Family consisted of Grandmother, Mother Ruoxi, Father Yuxuan, Son and his wife. They moved to the Fang family manor after their baby died, helping with the chores and raising of the twins.

Suri

Maid looking after Xinye when she was abducted. Wife of Shen.

Aoi Tokugawa

Japanese maid bought as a cleaning slave, promoted much later as maid. Daughter of the youngest brother of the shogun who invaded Goryeo between 1592-1598. She was 5 in 1598.

Returned to Japan when she was 38 to 39

Wu Yuxuan

Aoi's first master when she was 5, and later lover at 13 and betrayer at 15. He is 10 years older than Aoi. Follows Aoi to Japan.
