Forget Me Not
Finding one woman in the swirl of activity in Alamo as everyone was getting ready for fighting was far more challenging than Tyson initially assumed. Although Lorelai wasn't dressed the same as everyone else, the hub of activity made it difficult to find her.
"What do we do now? Wouldn't she have bailed by now?" Marcus asked, getting tired of the search.
"I don't think so. Lorelai could have stolen those things from me without getting you involved. There must have been a specific reason that she did that," Beor said.
"Maybe she wants something from us specifically?" Tyson speculated.
"If she wants something, why doesn't she just come and get it?" Marcus said, exasperated.
"Because not everyone has your preference for a direct approach. People usually plan ahead, employ specific tactics to get what they want," Tyson said.
The confusion on Marcus's face wasn't a surprise to Tyson as his friend often needed to be told things directly, and he rarely planned anything. He was mostly doing things impulsively without stopping to think about the consequences.
"But why?" Marcus asked like a small child eager to learn more about the world around it.
"Marcus, think about it. We are three strong men. She can't fight us or steal from us now that we know that she is against us. She needs to find another way to get whatever it is that she is after," Tyson said.
"I see," Marcus said, although Tyson wasn't sure that he really did as tactics weren't his strong point.
"I think we should split up," Beor said.
"Oh, no. I've learned my lesson. I am not about to leave Marcus alone. Bad things happen when I do," Tyson said.
"Fine, then you two go that way, and I'll go this way," Beor said, clearly annoyed.
"Alright, let's meet back here and be careful about any stray bullets as I don't remember how exactly the fighting went on before the final battle," Tyson said.
"Fine," Beor said dismissively.
There was something in his attitude that Tyson didn't really like. Yet, he was aware that he didn't have allies to choose from. Thus, he decided not to dwell on it as it seemed to have more to do with the guy's emotional state than with what they were about to do.
"Do you trust that guy?" Marcus asked the moment they were out of earshot. "You don't really trust the guy who tried to beat me up?"
It was clear that Marcus was resentful towards Beor, and Tyson could acknowledge that. Still, he trusted the guy enough not to worry about him stabbing them in the back.
"Honestly, at this point, I don't trust anyone. Having faith in people can only lead to disappointment," Tyson said, remembering why he agreed to go with Marcus to that fateful party in the first place.
He was feeling betrayed by everyone and everything but especially his family, who didn't seem to care in the slightest about his emotions, about his well-being. That very night he told his family about his success in his studies and his plans for his life only for them to say that being a history teacher was 'something that everyone could do'.
"You trust me, don't you?" Marcus asked.
That question was far more complicated for Tyson to answer than Marcus realized because he knew that Marcus would never purposefully betray him. However, having in mind that Marcus often lacked filter when talking with anyone had led to him revealing some things he shouldn't have in the past and so Tyson couldn't put complete trust in him.
Though it couldn't be considered as betrayal because he didn't do it on purpose, it still stung Tyson when he heard that some of his private words shared with the rest of the world. Even some of his secret desires or opinions were up for grabs in Marcus's mind.
"Of course I do, but that's different," Tyson said, not exactly sure what he was saying.
What he did know was that he was lying. He loved Marcus as a brother, but he didn't trust him or his oversharing nature to keep private matters private.
Before Marcus could ask any additional questions, Tyson spotted the oddly dressed woman weaving through the soldiers. As far as he could tell, she was headed for the church to shelter there with other women and children.
"Come on, hurry up, I see her," Tyson said, quickening his pace.
Marcus did as he was told, but they were still too late to confront her before she went inside. So, they were left with two choices, to follow her in or wait for her to come out, if ever.
"Alright, this is the safest place here, so I am not so sure she'll ever come out of it unless we smoke her out," Tyson said.
"We can't just burn down a church," Marcus said abhorred.
"What?" Tyson asked, confused. "Of course not. It's an expression, Marcus. We are just going to make her leave the church."
"Oh," Marcus said. "Oh, I see."
"Are you ready?" Tyson asked.
"Ahem, for what?" Marcus asked, not really understanding the plan.
"I'll take the front entrance, and you take the back. If Lorelai comes out that way, stop her. Then, just wait for me. Understood?" Tyson asked.
"Oh, right. Okay, just stop the chick," Marcus said, not sounding too sure of himself.
For a brief second, Tyson wished that Beor was with him instead of his friend as the guy seemed to be better equipped for these types of activities.
Hesitantly Tyson moved towards the front door as Marcus went to cover the back entrance, still seemingly dazed by all that was going on. Tyson hoped beyond hope that his plan would work and that he didn't make the biggest mistake of their lives as he wasn't even sure what he was doing.
The moment he entered the small church, he spotted Lorelai weaving through the women and children there with the ease of someone who has been through similar things before. She did her best to lose him in the crowd. However, he managed to stay on her heels until a couple of kids jumped in front of him, making him lose sight of her.
By the time he managed to make his way to the back of the church, all he could see outside was Marcus dusting himself off.
"What happened? Where did she go?" Tyson asked hurriedly, hoping that they could still catch up with her.
"Where did who go?" Marcus asked, confused. "Where are we?"
Tyson took a good look at his friend only to notice that he wasn't dusting off the dirt but something else, something unusual. That was when he realized that his friend must have been hit with the Time Eraser again.
"Alright, you seem to have been hit with a Time Eraser. It wiped out the last few minutes of your memory," Tyson said.
"Time Eraser? What are you talking about? We were just about to go swimming in the lake," Marcus said, squinting at the sun as if he saw it for the first time.
"She must have hit him with Full Wipe," Beor said, running towards them. "I saw her use Time Eraser on him, but I was too far away to stop her."
"What are you talking about? Who is the funny dude?" Marcus asked.
"Someone who will break your nose this time if you don't shut up," Beor said testily.
"This time?" Marcus asked, perplexed.
"Alright, here are the cliff notes," Tyson said as Beor hurried on in the direction he thought Lorelai went. "We went to the lake and somehow ended up in this time maze. It means we keep ending up in different times in history and don't know how to find a way home. Got it?"
"Cool. So, it's like Back to the Future?" Marcus asked excitedly.
"It's nothing like Back to the Future," Tyson said exasperated.
"Terminator?" Marcus asked with a stubborn determination to find just the perfect comparison.
"No," Tyson said sternly. "Listen, we are in danger. The woman who hit you with that Eraser thing wants to wipe all of our memories so that we can't find a way home."
"Huh?" Marcus asked.
"Here is what you will do. You will stay here and remember what I am about to tell you," Tyson said.
Then he proceeded to give him all the highlights of the trials they had been through without really revealing how many of the historical events were Marcus's fault. He was in such a hurry that he didn't consider if it was a smart move or not.
"Got it?" Tyson asked a few minutes later.
"I... I think so," Marcus said, sobered up by their grim reality.
"Alright then, I am going to see if I can help Beor and if she gets to me, just repeat to me everything I just told you. Alright?" Tyson asked.
"Sure," Marcus said though he wasn't really sure he remembered half of the things his friend told him.
Tyson then hurried off towards the sudden commotion that appeared to be coming from the Long Barrack. Knowing that the final stand wouldn't be happening just yet, Tyson assumed it was connected with the other two Mazers.
