Part 3
Abigail's POV
The next morning Sarah was up with the baby getting ready to go somewhere. She told me she had to meet with her in-laws so I assumed she would be alright. Sarah and the baby left and I decided to take a walk...at the wrong time. Just as I got to the square I could see someone being dragged to the hallows. What surprised me though was that it was a man...not a woman. Ok forgive me but my history is a bit rusty in this time.
Walking forward the men was begging and pleading for his life. I felt sorry for him. He didn't go to the gallows though instead he went to the stocks. Still I believe that is better than death. The man with the long white well now that I see it in a bit of light it looks more like silver hair. The man walked before the other one whom was now in the stocks and began to speak to the people. Apparently the crime was adultery. Man my ex wouldn't have lasted long here at all. Still this head guy decided to preach to everyone about it. A few times he even looked me right in the eyes.
"Remember all must be punished for their crimes!" the man calls out finally ending his speech.
Whew thank God he was finally done talking. I thought he would go on talking until the second coming. Either way I decided to continue my walk. Other girls looked at me odd apparently my dress wasn't at the height of fashion at that moment but oh well it didn't bother me. A dress was a dress in my opinion. Seriously fashion was just not me. Just as I was about to walk back to Sarah's a man who I didn't know jumped out and had a big grin on his face.
"Hello girly, you look like a fresh new face. Pretty one at that." he says as he takes out a knife.
Great one of these guys. If I can't have it I take it that seemed to be their motto. Wouldn't work on me though I had training and wasn't afraid to use it. The man comes to attack me and I block him easily. He looks surprised as he attacks me again and I manage to put him in a choke hold. He struggles and yelps then in the distance I see someone coming our way. Great time to reverse this and play damsel in distress. I reverse our roles and now he is the one holding me. Just in time both John and the Reverend come and "save" me.
"Are you alright miss Abigail?" Reverend asks me as he takes me out of the mans grasp
and holds me close to him.
Really I could have handled the man myself but something told me playing damsel in distress seemed to work more in this time period. Don't get me wrong I would go all future girl on someone if they really tried to hurt me. The Reverend looks back to John who right hooked the man. Ok so men in this time did have some moves. The man quickly ran off into the woods and John looks our way.
"What were you thinking go out here on your own?" John asks in a bit of a forceful tone.
"I beg you pardon, what right do you think you have speaking to me in such a manner?" I ask in an almost yelling tone as I walk right up to him.
"I'm the man who just saved you! Now perhaps you can tell me why I needed to save you? In other words why are you out here alone?" he says as he tries to come closer to me.
"I never asked you to save me now did I? You just came barging in and had to play the hero didn't you?" I say and I realize my talk sounds a bit more future like than I wanted.
We heard the reverend clearing his throat as we both turned to look at him. His face was one of shock but he calmed himself quickly and put his hands up as if he were surrendering himself. That must of been his cue to leave as well. Reverend turned on his heel and left quickly. John and I then looked back to one another.
"You have no idea what lays in he dark here Miss so I suggest you not go off one your own." he tells me and I can tell he is trying to control his temper.
"I know more than you could ever imagine sir." I tell him as I turn around and start to walk off.
Back in the village I can hear screaming again. Another sound that was popular in this town. Following the voice again I walk into a house and barely turned the corner to see a pregnant woman about to give birth. A woman a bit older than me stood before the girl and gave her instructions.
"That's right just breathe." the midwife I am guessing tells the woman who starts to cry.
Turning to leave the wood floor creaks and the midwife looks over at me. She looks happy to see me though. That alone tends to confuse me but then she motions for me to come to her. I do as she says though I am not sure why.
"Go and hold Miss Amber's hand. Her husband is also away at war and she needs all the support she can get." the midwife tells me.
Oh great I walked in on a birth and now I have to assist. Nodding I walk over and take the woman's hand. Trying my best I keep my eyes on her praying that I don't have to see birth up close and personal. The woman cries and yells as she looks at me and grips my hand as if she were Hercules. I didn't know what to say to her so I just began to sing. Hey I'm stressing right now and singing was all I could come up with.
"Hush now little one, listen to my voice and let it lead you to the right path of your life." I begin to sing and the woman who is giving birth smiles at me and begins to hum as she pushes.
Finally after what seemed like forever I hear a baby cry. Oh thank the lord. I don't know how much more my hand could have taken. The midwife smile as she hands the brand new baby girl to the woman who smiles with so much joy then she looks to me.
"Thank you, I don't even know you stranger but you were here to help me in my hour of need. What is your name?" the woman asks me as she looks between me and her child.
"I am Abigail, I am very happy I was able to help you but I did very little." I tell her but the midwife stops me.
"You were able to keep her distracted at least a little from the pain with your song. When you held her hand you lent her your strength. I now believe you two will be good friends. What will you name the child Amber?" the midwife says as she goes to wipe her hands off with soap and water.
"I would like to name her Abigail, after the kind Angel who came to help me in my hour of need. Thank you Abigail for lending me your strength and song." Amber says with a smile as she looks down at the happy baby now named after me.
Wow I actually had a namesake now. This was shocking but also the most endearing moment of my life so far. The baby looked at its mother and smiled. I didn't know how painful birth was but looking at that beautiful baby in Amber's arms it made it seem all worth it.
"I am honored to share my name with such a beautiful angel." I tell Amber with a kind and friendly smile.
