Part 12

Jason's POV

Hell was going to claim my soul I knew that, yet looking at Abigail for some reason gave me hope. Remembering my bonding with Angelica now disgusted me. Still I knew it would most likely be too late to re claim my soul and offer it back to God. No now instead I watch as the angel he gifted me sleeps before me. Sitting in my chair I begin to sketch her sleeping form. So peaceful and fearless. Knowing she could kill me at any moment even without magic did scare me but I couldn't help but stare at her. I would do whatever she wanted me even if it meant disobeying Angelica.

Abigail tossed and turned at times but she was mostly peaceful and now in five short days she would become my wife.  Knowing what might lye ahead for her though did scare me. A great power was in this woman. One I knew would be more powerful than anything Angelica could control. Looking out the window I could see it was a clear night. No moon just the stars. Laying my head back I quickly fall asleep.

"Hey? You shouldn't sleep in the chair like that you know. It's bad for your back." Abigail's voice wakes me from a dreamless sleep.

"Yes, my back will surely be sore for the day." I reply as I stand and stretch my limbs but I also see he watching me stretch and I can't help but smile. "Do you like what you see?"

Abigail's face immediately blushes. For some reason her blush makes me smile even more. I can see that Abigail is already dressed in a light blue dress and that remind me I have to take her to get her wedding dress made. Really I only hoped that the dressmaker would be able to finish it in time. Only five days is a lot of stress to put on a seamstress.

"What are you thinking about?" Abigail questions me.

"You need your wedding dress my dear, come and we shall have it made." I tell her as I offer her my arm.

"Shouldn't you get dressed first?" she says crossing her arms.

Looking down I realize she is right, nodding I go and change as fast as I can. Going back out to the main room I grab her and and we are off to see the seamstress. The seamstress looks at me confused because I am sure she knew that Angelica and I were having and affair.

"Ah the doctor is finally getting married. Many young hearts will be broken at this news." the old woman says as she begins to measure Abigail who looks less than amused by the statement.

"My love for Abigail is worth their rage then." I say and this even gets Abigail's attention."I speak from my heart when I say this woman is and forever will be the love of my life."

The seamstress doesn't answer but instead continues to measure Abigail who gives me the 'you have some explaining to do' look. Sad to know that I already know that look all too well. Just then we hear a rukus coming from the center of town...where the gallows are. What in the world could be happening now? Abigail grabs my arm and we walk out to the street to see Emily being dragged to the gallows.

"What is going on?" Abigail asks one of the townfolk.

"She's a witch, gonna be hanged." the man says as he doesn't take his eyes off the would be witch.

"A witch? Who came to that conclusion?" Abigail asks and I can clearly see her getting angry.

"Magistrate and the statesmen. They gave her a trial and apparently she couldn't prove the child she helped birth wasn't the work of the devil." the man says and we both look to see the magistrate put the noose around Emily's neck.

"NO!" Abigail yells out as she runs through the crowd. "What right have you to judge this woman? Only god himself has the power and I am sure he has not lent it to you!"

The magistrate looks at Abigail with a heavy heart knowing what she says is true but just like myself he is but a pawn as well. Looking my way I can see anger now in his eyes.

"Doctor do come and retrieve your woman before she is punished as well!" the magistrate yells to me.

"How dare you! You think because I am a woman I must belong to a man! I am clearly defending a friend whom you have accused of witchcraft but have no proof!" Abigail yells at him again as I come to her side.

"What evidence have you?" I now question the magistrate knowing I will pay for it later.

The magistrate brings out the jar and I can not describe in words what was it's contents. Abigail however walks right up to him and takes the jar and begins to examine it. She seemed to know what she was doing as she looked at it carefully.

"It's a stillborn my lord. Quite common in these parts, no doubt the mother was under nourished." Abigail states and even that is new to me, how could she know about still born children unless she was a midwife as well.

Emily was her friend though and a mid wife, I am sure she probably taught her a few things as well. The magistrate took the jar back as the woman of the child came forward saying that Emily tried to kill this child while it was still in her stomach, something not impossible but highly doubtful. I take Abigail's hand and hold her close to me as she cries begging for Emily's life to be spared. The magistrate takes one look at Angelica who shows no emotion then gives the sign to hang. The hangman pulls the rope and Emily is the newest so called witch to be killed...for no crime. Abigail turned into me so she wouldn't have to see her dear friend struggle for breath. It took only a few moments until Emily was no longer with us.

"Justice has been served." the Magistrate says as he walks away from the gallows.

"Not yet it hasn't." I hear Abigail say as she looks up to me. "You will help me avenge Emily's death, or you shall hang in the same spot where she did."

"I will do whatever you wish, even if you do not order me to." I tell Abigail as I hold her close to me. " I swear to you Abigail, I am on your side."
