Part One
I woke on Saturday morning, completely exhausted from a night of cleaning up after my cat after he hurled everywhere.
Regardless, I was surprised that my dad had not woken me to make breakfast, which I've been doing since I was young. It was currently 9:49AM, and I wondered if my dad just didn't want to eat this morning.
I went to the one place I knew he would be; the basement. He was usually down there, tinkering with his tools and contraptions.
After I had clomped down the wooden stairs to be greeted with the distinct musty smell, my dad turned in his office chair with great drama.
"I've done it!" he declared, holding up a plain watch that was similar to the boring one on my wrist.
"Done what?" was my response as I leaned on the railing. Usually my dad doesn't allow this, but he was clearly too distracted to notice, or care.
"I have made a device then can do the impossible; it can stop time."
I squinted. "There is no way I believe you."
"You better! Come outside and prepare to be blown away."
I reluctantly followed him out the door where Blaze, the cat, was chasing butterflies in the garden.
"Now here's how it works. On the back here is a tiny keyboard, you see that? What we do with this is we type in the names of who we want to not be affected by the device's powers. So here: Adam Cooper....and...Chloe Cooper; there! Now we press the button on the top where the clock face is..."
All of a sudden, the air seemed to stop flowing; almost suffocatingly still. The trees stopped waving. Blaze was frozen with one paw stretched towards a butterfly, mid-flight.
"Ok, I get it, it's cool and all. But what is the point?"
My dad pressed the button again and Blaze toppled over as the butterfly flitted away. I giggled a little.
"Well, you see Chloe, I want you to help the people in the town. Everyday you will go down the path to the town, and whenever you see someone who needs help, you can freeze time before the event occurs."
"I guess."
"You will start tomorrow."
