Chapter Five
All five of us got into single file to follow the armed guards. I wondered what Samuel had up his sleeves. He was walking in front of me with his chest puffed out, almost as if he wanted one of the soldiers to say something to him, something that would warrant a response.
The team towered over Paul's army by a good seven to eight inches. Our white suits stood out as we marched down the hallway flanked by black uniforms. We had become prisoners in our own home; if you could really call it that.
We were supposed to be able to live and work at OnyxFive freely—that's what Paul had promised us—but now it seemed he had broken that promise. Everything had changed. I guess I shouldn't be too surprised.
As we rounded the corner, we came into sight of two normals standing in the middle of the hallway, talking to each other. Both turned to look at our large entourage. As we got closer, they each took a step back, confused looks on their faces. The normals were probably wondering why we were being marched like prisoners of war down a hallway we had all walked freely just hours before. I'm sure they thought we had done something criminal; but we hadn't.
We continued to move quietly toward Paul's main lab on the second level. The only sound in the hallway was that of the soldiers' boots against the hard floor.
This seemed a little too easy. Samuel and Theo could have taken out these soldiers already. All five of us were together, and that made us extremely lethal. Why weren't we doing anything?
I glanced over at Paul. Something had changed in his expression. He had to be pondering the same thing. He knew what Samuel was capable of doing to someone he thought was the enemy. It wasn't like anyone on this team to easily give in during a fight.
As we turned down another hallway, I felt the presence of a new energy source. It was strong and approaching us quickly. There was no doubt in my mind: the Hunter was back. He was somewhere in the hallway with us, but we still couldn't see him.
I looked back at Theo. He nodded, his white eyebrows forming an almost perfect "V" and his lips pinched together in a determined scowl. He put his hand on my arm. I could feel his energy coursing through his veins. He must be able to feel the Hunter's presence as well. Audrina glanced back at me, a confused frown on her face. Then her back stiffened.
"Turn around," one of the soldiers barked at her.
Audrina stopped and stared defiantly back at the soldier. "No."
Before the guard could respond, his weapon was abruptly forced out of his hands. It floated in the air, aimed at his head. All of us stood motionless as we waited to see what the next move would be.
The soldier's eyes widened in terror as realization set in that a loaded weapon was aimed at him. He backed up against the wall and stood quietly, slowly he raised his hands in front of his face. Suddenly, another guard lunged for the gun. As one of his hands got close to the floating weapon, it went off.
Bang. The deafening sound echoed down the hallway.
A deep red ooze soaked through the guard's dark uniform as he fell back against the white wall, leaving behind a streak of blood as his body slowly slid to the floor. Almost instantly, the entire hallway erupted into chaos.
Audrina lunged towards another guard. His flesh turned blue as both of her hands came into contact with his body.
I grabbed onto the guard standing next to me and sent a strong current of electricity through his body, causing him to fall to the ground.
Theo, Samuel and Gave all leapt into action. One-by-one Paul's guards were sent to the ground.
The sound of another bullet being released from the gun caused us to abruptly stop. The loaded weapon was still floating in the air. It moved sharply in various directions before rotating back towards one of Paul's few remaining guards.
The guard let out a snide laugh and then ran towards it. Gunfire erupted. We all dropped to the floor to escape becoming the next target.
Samuel grasped his medallion. "Let's get out of here."
Just as he was about to open the Jump Line, an explosion of blinding light erupted in front of us.
Instinctively, I closed my eyes just as I felt something grab my hand and yank me into the brightness. A silent scream escaped from my lips, but then the light disappeared and I opened my eyes to find myself in one of the most beautiful rooms I had ever seen. Samuel, Gave and Audrina appeared next to me. A bewildered look crossed all our faces.
"Where are we? Where did that light come from?"
"I don't know," Audrina responded, as she turned to survey the place in which we'd landed. It was adorned with beautiful white, plush furniture and surrounded by large glass windows that overlooked some sort of ocean. The white tips of the waves glistened in the pale orange sunlight.
"Where's Theo?" I looked around at the rest of the group. We had all made the jump, but Theo wasn't anywhere to be found.
"I don't know," Gave said. "Everything happened so fast. We were on the floor and then we ended up here. I'm not sure what happened."
"Where exactly is here?" I asked again.
"Not sure," Gave said. "I've never seen this place before. It's beautiful, but it's also giving me a creepy feeling."
"I know where we are," Samuel cut in. "I've been here before."
"What?" Audrina asked, flicking a strand of her long white hair off her shoulder. "When have you been here, Samuel?"
Samuel paused and then turned to me. "Esa, there's something I need to tell you. Please don't freak out."
"Why would I freak out?" Samuel was acting weird
"Because I know you," he said, staring intently at me. "I know you will be upset. You always get upset when you think I'm not telling you something."
"What is it, Samuel?" Audrina put her hands on her hips. "Just tell us and stop dragging it out. We don't have time for your long-winded answers right now."
"I didn't tell any of you, but I went and found my mom's research. It included the codes for the Jump Line. There was also something else."
"What?" we all asked in unison.
"I talked to my mother again," he said. "I mean, I talked to our mother, Dr. James."
My hand instinctively flew to the back of my neck where my mom had forever imprinted the code to find her research on time travel. I had known it was only a matter of time before Samuel went and found the items, but I'd assumed he would have told me, so that we could go together. After all, I was the one who was the key, not him. It felt like he had betrayed me by going without my knowledge.
