The Wedding - 1

Shreya's wedding was on Sunday. We had decided to attend the Sangeet function on Friday evening and the main ceremony. On Friday, I left office early, so did Maya and Neha. Maya offered to give the both of us a ride to Shreya's place.

I reached home around four fifteen. I frantically searched my cupboard to find something I could wear to the ceremony. I already had an outfit ready for the wedding but, the Sangeet had completely slipped my mind.

I contemplated on whether or not to wear a saree for a while and finally decided against it. I received a text from Shreya asking us where we were. Apparently all her friends except the three of us were already there.

I finally settled on wearing the yellow salwar suit I wore to my brother's wedding reception. I didn't believe in 'never repeating an outfit'. Well, the crowd was different and it wouldn't matter. It had full length net sleeves and a high collar. The upper body had golden thread work going on while the lower part was void of designs.

I set the dress aside and went to freshen up. I settled in front of the mirror in my room and decided to do my makeup, which I was not a fan of. I applied some mascara and used eyeliner which helped highlight my eyes. Then I added a little makeup to my face (a bit more than I usually use while going out since I was going to a wedding). I found my golden jhumkas which I was pretty sure that went well with my outfit. I tied my hair in a messy French braid to the side so that my earrings were showing.

I had applied a little colour to my lips when I heard Maya's car pull in at the driveway. I looked myself in the mirror and decided I was good to go. I grabbed my golden clutch, slipped my feet into the golden Gujrati sandals which I had taken out for the occasion and rushed to the door.

"You good to go?" Maya asked me as I reached her car.

"Yep. I've got my keys, phone and some cash."

"Great, Neha is already out, waiting for us."

"We aren't picking her up?" I asked, confused when she said that.

"We are, but her dad offered to drop her to the junction, so that we wouldn't have to go all the way in."

I remembered Neha mentioning that her house was a little away from the main road.

"Oh, okay. Hey, you look good by the way." I told her. She was wearing a green saree.

"You do too." She told me.

After a few minutes of Maya driving and me sightseeing, I spotted Neha on the roadside.

"There she is." I pointed her out to Maya and she slowed the vehicle and honked catching her attention.

Her father was next to her and smiled at us.

"Have a good time girls." He told us.

"Bye papa." Neha said to her dad as she entered the car. "I'll call you when I am about to reach here.

"Sure."

She was wearing a full length orange salwar with golden thread work that vaguely resembled mine.

"You look hot." Maya commented looking through the glass.

"Your glass is adjusted to see the passenger on the backseat?" I asked her.

She chuckled and then adjusted it back to see the road.

"But, she is right though. The deep neckline made you say that?"

"Of course."

Neha laughed at our comments.

"Oh, believe me, dad wasn't happy when he saw me. Then he said, he'll leave it to Shravan."

"Speaking of him, when are we getting to meet him?" Maya asked.

I wasn't overly fond of meeting new people. But hey, he's Neha's fiancée, it wouldn't be that bad.

"Tomorrow." Neha said.

"What?" Maya asked, taking her eyes off the road to look at Neha.

"Eyes on the road lady." Neha said. "And yes, he is attending the wedding tomorrow."

"That is nice; I am bringing my husband too. At the least Raghav will have company now! I was worried he would drag me back home early saying he was bored." Maya said.

Both of them had a plus one for the next night, I would be left alone while they go with their respective partners. I wished Gunjan bhabhi was here so I could take her. Then again, she wasn't arriving till Tuesday and even if she did, she couldn't possibly attend the long function. I decided not to think about it further and decided to enjoy the rest of my day.

We found Shreya in her room surrounded by her two female cousins and about ten of her school and college friends.

She introduced all of us to each other. She looked really pretty in the dark blue and green lehenga.

"So, which song are you dancing to?"

"What, we have to dance?" Maya asked her with a bewildered look on her face.

"You come to my sangeet and ask that? You didn't think you could escape without dancing."

"No, of course not." Neha said and I turned to look at her.

"Good. Thank you guys."

"Oh, not the three of us, I saw these two dance. It is horrible, trust me. You don't want them dancing even in the background. I am doing a solo, is that fine?"

Shreya suspiciously looked at Maya and I and we gave her the best possible, 'she is right' look.

"In that case, okay."

Shreya's friends had prepared a video montage for her. It started with the pictures of her when she was just a few weeks old. There we pictures of her standing, while holding on to a table, trying to ride a bicycle, trying to catch a boy running in front of her, which I presumed to be Sidharth, with her friends in school and college over the years and then a few pictures of us from the office. I was missing in a couple of them. The song 'I'll be there for you' played along. The video was on repeat so anyone coming in at any point could see that.

The function started around seven. Bollywood songs were playing on the background. People started dancing soon after. It all stopped for a while when the groom's family arrived. After the first few minutes, the commotion resumed. Her school and college friends took the centre stage. They were accompanied by some of Sidharth's friends and family. After a while Neha took the stage, she was an exceptional dancer. She also pulled in Shreya and Sidharth towards the end.

Neha was exhausted from her performance and we decided to go and grab some dinner. I opted for chicken tikka masala to go with the couple of rotis and a little rice I had placed earlier in my plate. For dessert I had some jalebis and gulab jamun.

A little while after that Maya got a call from her husband saying her daughter was asking for her. We told Shreya and left soonafter.
