Chapter 3 | James

James was annoyed about being defeated by his dad at Quidditch, so he decided to do something to take his mind off it. And when James Sirius Potter decides to do something, it's best to watch out, because 99% of the time, it will be causing mischief.

James tip toed quietly towards his father's office door. He looked over his shoulder cautiously to check that no one was following him. When he couldn't see anyone, he twisted the door nob of the office, but to James's dismay, it was locked.

"Alohomora," whispered James, pointing his wand towards the handle. He heard a faint click, and whispered "Yes!" before entering.

He closed the door gently behind him, carefully making sure not to be seen, nor heard by the creaking sound of the door. He snuck over to his dad's desk where a bunch of papers were filed.

"Boring," James whispered to himself, rolling his eyes and grunting.

He searched the desk for anything that might interest him, when a cabinet in the corner of the room suddenly caught his eye.

"I wonder what's in here," he thought out loud, heading towards it.

He fiddled with the pad locks that had been placed upon the cabinet; most likely for the exact purpose of keeping James out of it. Unfortunately for James, they had succeeded in their purpose as he was incapable of cracking them and taking them off.

"Stupid muggle contraptions," James cursed under his breath, kicking the cabinet in frustration, and holding his foot in pain.

He pondered back towards the desk disappointedly, when something else caught his eye. He didn't know why he hadn't seen it before. It was screaming off the page, when you compared it to all of the other papers and things that sat alongside it.

"What's this?" He asked himself.

He snatched it up from the desk and raised it, holding it at eye level. A smile seemed to creep onto his face as he became more and more fascinated by it. It was in fact a necklace. But not one that James had seen before. An hour glass rested in a circle that was connected to a gold chain. It dangled in front of his face for a while before he placed it around his neck and tucked it under his shirt so that no one would see that he had it on.

He then noticed that his dad's top desk draw was half open. He approached it with care, and took a blank piece of parchment out of it. He was about to place it back in the draw, when he heard a sudden noise behind him.

He turned around to see that the door was open, so he went back towards it and placed his fingers on it to close it once more. However, when James turned back around, his dad was standing there, with his eyebrows raised.

"D-dad," James stuttered in shock, "I-I um...I didn't see you come in."

"No, I didn't think you would," Harry said, "Bummed that I beat you at Quidditch?"

"No," James lied.

"Where did you get that piece of parchment?" Harry asked.

"Your desk draw," James muttered.

"The top one?" Harry asked, walking over to the draw and examining it.

"Er...Yeah," James admitted.

Harry walked up to James and smiled. James was clueless as to why his father was grinning at him for breaking into his office and stealing his things. To be honest, he had expected a full on parental lecture.

"I solemnly swear that I am up to no good," Harry said, still smiling at James, but pointing his wand at the bare piece of parchment.

Writing suddenly appeared on the parchment and James stared at it in awe.

"This is the Marauders map," Harry explained, "My dad, James, and his friends, Sirius, Remus and um...Peter, created it. They called themselves the Marauders."

"Cool," James's eyes widened, "Do you mean Remus, as in Teddy's dad?"

"Yeah," Harry grinned.

"What does it do?" James asked curiously.

It shows Hogwarts, and where everyone is in the castle," Harry answered.

"That is aweso- Oh, here you go," James said, handing it back to his father before he got too attached to it.

"I want you to keep it," Harry told him.

"What? Really? Are you serious?" James asked in utter disbelief.

"No, you're Sirius," Harry chuckled.

"Stop with the Sirius puns dad! You know I hate them," James hit his dad playfully.

"Okay, sorry," Harry apologised.

"So who are these people? Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and P-" James asked, reading from the map.

"Prongs," Harry finished. "That's the marauders. They all became illegal animaguses for Remus, to help him when he transformed into a werewolf. James was a stag, so they called him Prongs. Sirius was a black dog, and they called him Padfoot. Peter was a rat, hence the name Wormtail. And Lupin...well, he was a werewolf."

"Why haven't you told me any of this before?" James asked, excited yet outraged.

Harry just shrugged and walked over to the cabinet that James had previously attempted to break into. He unlocked it with ease, and drew out a cloak that was hanging up in there. He closed the cabinet and handed the cloak to James.

"What's this?" James asked ungratefully.

"Put it on," Harry instructed.

James sighed and reluctantly wrapped the cloak around his back, only to find that his body was now invisible.

"My body's gone!" He exclaimed, spinning around.

"You sound just like me," Harry chuckled.

James took the cloak off and before he was able to even hand it back to his dad, Harry intervened.

"I want you to keep this too," he explained.

"You're giving me the invisibility cloak? Me?" James asked, stunned.

"Yes, James, I am giving it to you," Harry clarified.

"Well, at least you've told me that this existed," James laughed.

"Yes, but I don't want you to do what I did. I haven't given this to you to get into trouble, I've given this to you to get out of trouble, alright?"

"Alright," James lied.

"Even though I've said that, you're still going to disobey me, aren't you?" Harry asked knowingly.

"Maybe," James smirked.

"Of course you are," Harry laughed, "You're so much like your name sakes."

"What were they like dad?" James asked seriously.

"I was one when my dad died, and I never got to spend much time with Sirius. Remus taught me in my third year, but he was going through a rough patch at that time, so I'm sure he used to be more enthusiastic towards life. The happiest I ever saw him was when Teddy was born and he asked me to be godfather."

James smiled at the image that appeared in his head at the thought. He wanted to meet his grand parents, and could see in his father's eyes how much he had wanted to meet them too.

"If you really want to know what they were like..."

"What?"

"You could always ask..."

"Ask who dad?"

"Well, you could ask Professor McGonnagall."

"She's headmistress!"

"Thank you captain obvious."

"That would just be weird."

"I suppose it would, but if you really want to know what they were like, then it would be worth it."

"Why didn't you ever ask her?"

"Because I only just thought about it."

There was an awkward pause for a moment before James decided to show his appreciation.

"Thanks dad," he said, hugging his dad.

Harry didn't respond, but James could hear the words 'I love you' coming from his hug. He let go and smiled up at his father, who smiled back down.

"And as happy as this encounter was," Harry changed the subject, "I don't want to see you sneaking into my office again. Especially now that you have the cloak, okay? And, that in mind, I should probably get a higher security system for my office."

"Promise," James chuckled in agreement, heading for the door.

"James?" Harry said, and James stopped just inside the doorframe.

"Mhm?" James hummed in reply, turning on his heels to face his dad.

Harry walked over to where James was standing and placed his wand upon the map.

"When you're done, don't forget to say Mischief Managed, otherwise anyone can read it."

"Okay."

The writing disappeared, and it returned to being a blank bit of parchment. James skipped along the corridor happily, not caring how much of a fool he looked like.

~I solemnly swear that I am up to no good~

So James now owns the Marauders Map, the Invisibility Cloak, and a Time Turner! We all know that can only spell trouble. Mainly because this book is titled 'Time Glitch'...but you know, it is James Sirius Potter, so what else do you expect?

Anyway, I really enjoyed writing this chapter, the ideas just seemed to flow one after the other, I hope you guys enjoyed it as much as I did. I actually wrote it a very long time ago (even before I wrote the second chapter) because I was so eager to write it.

I don't have any questions about this chapter, but as always, please comment your opinions.

And of course, as always, the disclaimer stands strong. I did not write Harry Potter, and I'm sure you'd all know if I did.
