Olivia- Heartbeat Song
Part 3
Thomas POV
The door smashes open to reveal Ki standing there, tears streaming heavily down his face, I don't even know why.
"What's going on?" I ask as he walks into the living room. I was just cooking but I quickly switch off the oven.
"She's gone!" He cries "She left me a note,"
He hands it to me and I read it, I recognise the handwriting-
Ki,
I want to tell you I'm sorry. Don't worry because this note isn't what you think it is. I'm sorry if I break you heart. But you have things you have to do. And if you're reading this I must've made it through.
I'm going to stay with someone for a while,if you call me I probably won't respond. I love you,I love you so so much but I know you can do better, look at me,nobody needs me. And I'm sorry. But I can't change myself, you've known that for years and years.
So this is me,and I'm saying thank you. I'll always love you.
Tiffany Sangster.
"She's okay." I say reassuringly "She'll be okay."
"I don't even know where's she's gone."
"Well we'll find her."
He slumps down against the well as if his entire body is frozen and never to move again.
I know truly Tiffany wouldn't do this to hurt him, there's always a reason,I ring her mobile over and over but to receive no response. So was she trying to shut everyone out again?
"I rung her work." Ki groans "And she's not even there."
"There's plenty of places to look."
"Like what?"
"The old house."
"Huh?"
"Just get in the car."
We drive for about half and hour until we reach the old house, which me and Tiff grew up in. My parents had moved away and left it to me,it was too hard to take in and everything was originally left the way it was. Once we enter the place is covered with dust as I make my way around the lower ground and Ki heads upstairs,he yells my name a few minutes later..
"What's up?" I follow his voice to see him standing in Tiffany's room,it hasn't changed at all. I wander around and sit down at the desk as I pull out a draw to see it's full of notebooks,I flick through them to see thousands of inked words and drawings, all reflecting some kind of deep, crippling emotions.
"I don't think we should be looking through these.." Ki stutters.
"I'm just curious."
"What's even in them?"
"Look."
Dates are scrawled across the pages...
I feel trapped
You can escape this you're just not running fast enough
Loving someone is so painful
I remember when the world was a mess and to be honest that never really changed
"We should burn these." I say, scoping them into my arms "These are no good for anyone."
"You can't just burn them, they don't belong to you."
"They're triggers."
"Just give them here." He snatches them from my embrace.
My phone suddenly flashes up to an unknown number..
"Hello?" The voice seems to be coming from a male.
"Can I help you?"
"Are you related to Tiffany Sangster?"
"Yeah." My stomach begins to twist "Is she okay?"
"She's.. Shes in a coma."
"WHAT?"
"We're not sure wether she'll pull through."
"I'll be there as soon as I can."
I hang up then feel my heart begun to pound out of my chest.
"What's wrong?"
"Ki this is too hard.."
"Tiffany's in a coma."
He falls against the wall as his face screws up into years, clutching his chest tightly.
"Ki.." I pull him into my arms "Ki come on,you need to be strong for her. Come on."
We rush to the hospital and once we enter the waiting room Olivia runs to us,tears streaming down her face.
"I... I tried to help her." She cries as Ki sprints away to where she is.
"She's dying isn't she?" I whisper as I start to cry.
"I know,."
"This isn't fair."
"Stop it Thomas, she's not going to die."
"If she dies Ki dies too. I can't go in there.."
"It's okay,I don't think I could face it either. We'll wait here."
We sit down on some seats.
"How did you know she was here?" I ask.
"Because she ran away to me."
"Do you know why?"
"She's having a baby and she doesn't know what to do. I'm sure we'd all be the same if we we're in that position. I don't understand how this could've happened,I rang her over and over at work and she didn't pick up.. So I raced home to find her lying there unconscious of everything and I didn't know what to do or how to tell you because I know this whole thing is shredding you up into a million pieces and I know that when your heart is broken into a million pieces it's impossible to know which piece to follow."
"What happens if she doesn't make it.. If we loose her."
"Life is never that unfair, everything will be okay. I'm sure."
"How can you be sure?"
"I've learnt that if you keep hoping that wishes will come true."
"She's the only true family I've got left.."
"I bet ten years ago you wouldn't of cared."
"That's then and this is now."
"Do you even know what happened to her? Everything broke for me. And it was basically everyone's fault."
"You shouldn't say that."
But in actuality I know it's true, that now the world has to hurt her so much and it might never be okay again.
The hours drag on and on,continuous waiting and wandering until Ki comes staggering back into the room, face pale as snow as he lays against the the wall, knees curled to his head,he buries it so he can't be seen as a pair if Doctors walk past and motion for me to come with them as we walk to the other side of the room.
"What's going on?" I ask.
"We think it would be best if you sat with her,for support,I don't think your friend can handle it." One of the doctors says, motioning to Ki as Olivia walks forward "But you must be family,I know you're the brother,is she your sister?"
"Yes." I answer "Yes she is."
"Come with me please." We follow them until they take us to a room, surrounded with doctors and nurse's as Tiffany lays there,so calm and peaceful. We walk over and I grip her freezing hand.
"Do you think she can hear us?" I question through a broken voice.
"Probably.."
"I'll go back to Ki,I know he can't be alone right now."
"Okay."
I walk back away, sucking up my tears as I find him. He hasn't changed his original position,I slump myself down beside him.
"She wouldn't want you like this."
"She wouldn't want any of this to be like this."
"I know about the baby Ki."
"Is this all my fault. Am I the reason all this happened?"
"No,of course you're not."
"There's no other reason to it."
"Come in." I haul him up.
"Where we going?"
"Just wait."
I drive him for a little while until we arrive at a park, full of beauty and light.
"What are we doing her?" Ki asks as we slump down on the soft, fresh grass.
"This is where you first met Tiffany."
"It was?"
"Yeah. I remember playing us three hide and seek together and she hid away for hours and you finally found her then she looked at you with this smile and I had never seen it before, and I never saw it again, until you fell in love with her. You're the only one who can bring that light out in her."
He just stands there, looking at the floor as he starts to cry again.
"Nothing will help if you sit here crying." I sigh.
"What else is there to do?"
"Please don't break Ki."
"I don't know what to do."
"That's simple, we wait for her to wake up."
"How long?"
"A few days."
"I can't wait that long."
"We'll pass the time. We can do anything you want."
"I just want her."
"Soon, all right I promise."
"I love her, more than anyone else ever." As his eyes focus on another spot "Look. Look Tom she's right there!"
He points to an empty spot, nothing there.
"Ki that's not her.. She's not there."
"Yes she is. Tiffany!"
"She's still asleep."
"Then what's wrong with me?"
"You're hallucinating."
"I need her. I need her now!"
"She's not here!"
He suddenly scampers up as sprints away,I was never as fast as him,his stamina was unbeatable as he runs for miles on end to the familiar neighbour hood, crashing through the door of my old house and up to Tiffany's room and begins crying loudly, sniffling in the scent of the pillows softly, all I can do is stand there and watch my best friend in nothing but pain.
I walk over to the wardrobe and open it up to see all her clothes, flicking my hands through them. I look up at a small top shelf that was built over the rails. There were a few jewellery boxes and school books, then a set of notebooks, I open them up to see they're all photo books-From when we were babies,I flick through the years and books until I come to the final photo. It's of me and her, she's twelve and I think I was fourteen (Almost fifteen) at the time. We're sitting on a beach,I'm smiling into the camera like a nutter and so is she. For a moment I feel like writing across her pixilated eyes, about how she broke or declared herself Dead Inside. I pick back up the books and walk back to Ki.
"Here." I hand his the photo books which he curls into his arms.
"I'll stay here." He whispers,so close for me not even be able to hear "I'll stay here until she wakes up."
"Do you want something to eat?"
"I'm not hungry."
"I'll take you home."
"I don't want to."
"Tough."
I drag him up then put him in the car and drive him home,I tell him I'll call him later then head back into work. My assistant Joe hands me a pitch for a meeting I sit through, barely saying anything. I don't see the point of any of this.
"Thomas what do you think?" My colleague Doug asks, holding up a pitch.
"I don't care.." I mutter.
"What?"
"I can't focus today."
"We need your choice. You're the head of this department."
"Do what you want. I couldn't care less."
"Are you okay Tom?" Grace asks.
"No."
"Do you want to talk."
"Everyone just go home. Don't bother." I pull away from my chair as I walk away to my office, slumping down on the chair as I start to cry,I hear a knock a few seconds later. I look up to see Grace.
"Can I come in?" She asks.
"Sure."
She closes the door behind her then takes a seat opposite me.
"What's wrong?"
"My sister."
"Oh Tiffany, the one I met at the Christmas party, she's sweet."
"I'm worried about her."
"That's because life's fragile,but it's beautiful."
"You're an optimist. Of course you'd say that."
"Just because you're not a generally positive person you know that the Sky's still blue. Everything will work out Tom,everyone will be happy."
"How can you be happy?"
"Because I realise how lucky I am. So are you, embrace life."
"You think?"
"I know it more than anything in the world."
"But I was such an idiot. Over-reacting like that."
"No. You're someone who loves someone else, when you love someone else you'll do anything for them."
"I guess."
"I know it,Thomas."
"I'm still stuck."
"Well the last thing I want to do is hurt anyone."
"Thanks Grace."
"My pleasure.. Just smile,it'll do a whole lot better, the world needs good people like you."
I just smile.
"Go home and rest." She says "It'll all be okay soon enough."
"Right,okay. Bye."
"Goodbye."
I drive around for a little while, picking up some food for Ki then pick up some flowers for Tiffany,I know I can't visit her as it isn't allowed visiting time currently but I know I can go as soon I can. I find her a card then sit at a Coffee shop alone. Thinking about what to do-I know that even when Tiffany does wake up it wasn't right to go back to the old house, what was the point in living in the past? We don't have to be defined by the things we did or didn't do in our past. Some people allow themselves to be controlled by regret. Maybe it's a regret, maybe it's not. It's merely something that happened. Get over it. But take it from me,people are all over the world telling their one dramatic story and how their life has turned into getting over this one event. Now their lives are more about the past than their future.
I ring an estate agent about selling the home. There was no purpose in it. Everything needed to be moved or destroyed, that was a long process. I needed to do it now..
As I arrive back into the old house to see dad sitting there on the step like a child, looking at the ground.
"Dad?" I ask,not being able to believe it at first.
"I'm sorry about Tiffany."
"She hasn't woke up yet dad."
"Well.. Yes I know."
"What do you mean?"
"Son.. Your sister.. She died yesterday afternoon."
That's when my world stops.
"She never woke up did she dad?"
"No. No she didn't."
