A New Boy

Ryan's POV

"Jack.  Get up." I shook the sleeping man, "You have to take me to school.  It's 7:45 and school starts at 8:15."

He groaned and rolled over, "Go away.  I'm hungover."

"No!" I shook him harder, "You have to get up.  I'm going to be late for school.  You don't even have to put on pants.  Just a shirt and some slippers, that's all you need to drive me to school.  I'll even make you a toaster strudel for breakfast.  Please get up."

"Alright." Jack made an effort to sit up.  "I'll put on a shirt but there better be some Eggo waffles for me downstairs."

So I went downstairs and popped two frozen waffles in the toaster.  For some reason I was really anxious today.  It was just a normal school day so I don't know why I was thinking this way.  Maybe it's because Jack is driving me and I don't want people to see.  People aren't allowed to know that I'm living with him.  I don't know what the consequences of me being with him would be, but I can imagine that they wouldn't be good.

"Ugh.  I can't believe I once got up this early every day." I heard Jack as he entered downstairs.  A slight pop from the toaster signalized that waffles were done.

"Ow.  Hot.  Shit shit shit." I swore softly as I picked the hot food out of the toaster and put it on a plastic plate.  I sucked on my fingers for a few seconds to try to cool the burning feeling.  It doesn't feel good when I don't expect it.

Jack swiftly picked up a waffle, folded it in  half, and shoved it in his mouth.  Crumbs spilled down his shirt as he repeated the action with the other one.  I started at him in disbelief.  Doesn't he have any taste buds to burn?  Like, at all?

"What are you waiting for?" He grabbed a paper towel and wiped his mouth, "Get in the car, let's go!"

After a brief 15 minute drive that we spent singing along to twenty one pilots, we pulled up to the school.  I took a deep breath and grabbed my backpack.  Here I go.  Back at hell again.

"Wait, what time do I need to pick you up?" Jack asked me before I closed the car door.

"4:45." I told him, "I have a club meeting after school.  Is that okay with you?"

"That's alright." He waved me on, "I'll be there to get you.  Now get in that building before you get your ass kicked.  Don't kill anyone and if someone offers you drugs you better bring some home to share, you understand me?"

I gave him a salute, "Yes sir!"

Jack chuckled, "That's my boy.  Now go kick some ass."

As I was walking away from the car I noticed that I was smiling.  A big goofy smile was spread across my face.  I scolded myself silently and tried to replace the grin with my signature resting bitch face.  It didn't work and the corners of my mouth kept turning up little by little.  In the end, I decided not to fight it and enjoy the good mood I was having.

My good mood even lasted all the way to my first period class.  I sat down in my seat at the back of the Spanish room and tipped my head downward, trying to bite back the grin.  Why can't I stop smiling?  Why am I happy?  What the fuck is going on?

I could feel my mind drifting back into that imaginary world in my head.  In that world I would live with Jack forever.  He would be my new father and I could go on tour with him and the rest of his band.  No more sadness, no more anxiety for me.  I would be happy like this all the time.  Everything would be perfect.

"Hey.  We got it's attention."

I stuck my head up.  The dickheads in the front of the class were all turned back in my direction.  I looked around, what did they throw at me this time?

"You the new kid Mrs. Falvey was jabbering on about?" One of them said.

Now I was confused.  I'm not new.  I've been here the whole year.

"Uhm, I think so." An unfamiliar voice beside me gulped nervously.

A boy was sitting in the desk next to me.  He had dark hair and glasses.  He's the new kid?  I could vaguely remember Mrs. Falvey saying something about a new student.

"Dumbass." Another fuckboy laughed, "What's your name?"

I silently prayed that the kid wouldn't answer him.  The number one rule with assholes is that you either fight back strong or you keep silent.  He looked pretty vulnerable, so fighting back was out of the question.  Poor kid.  Already being picked on at the first day.

"Um, Kai." The kid blurted out.  I internally facepalmed.  Poor kid, poor poor kid.

"Kai.  What kind of name is that?" Derek, the worst of them all, jeered at him.  Okay.  Enough is enough.  I have to help this kid before it gets worse.

"I think it's awesome." I said loudly, "How often do you hear a name like that?"

I saw Kai shoot me a thankful glance.  I nodded slightly to hopefully communicate to him that I was on his side.

"Stay out of this, faggot." Derek shot back with a sneer.  His beady eyes fixated on me.  A calm and confident smile made it's way onto my face.  I've got this.

"Why are you talking to yourself?" I replied back smoothly.

"I'm not the trannie boy here." Derek said with just as much confidence.  He knew his game here.  And luckily so did I.

"You're right.  You're not nearly as manly as one."

A collective gasp rose from the group of guys.  Oh yeah, I played them at their own game.  This is so great.  I feel powerful.  And with that, Derek turned around to go back to his own the business.  The other boys soon followed suit.

"Dude thank you so much." Kai said to me, "You're such a life save and I didn't want to be a jerk or anything on my first day."

"It's totally cool, man." I assured him, "Those guys are just mean.  You'll learn that pretty quickly."

I took a closer look at Kai.  He was wearing a pink button up shirt with jean shorts and red bow tie.  He definitely looked good in it, but stuck out like sore thumb.  My gaydar started going off immediately.  It was then that I decided that I wanted to be friends with Kai.

"I'm Kai." He introduced himself again, "I just moved here from down south."

"Nice to meet you, Kai.  I'm Ryan."

We shook hands.  Kai's felt warm and oddly fitting in mine.  I definitely wanted to be friends with him.

"So I'm new here.  Like to the area and everything.  Anything fun to do?" Kai asked me slightly awkwardly.  I smiled.  He's really nice.

"Actually dude we have a GSA here if you're interested.  There's a meeting tonight." I offered.  I really hoped he could come.  We could get to know eachtother more and I could see if my gaydar was right.

"Yeah I'm interested!"

"Cool.  It's in this room.  I'll see you there." I told him.

"Definitely."
