Chapter Six
Aika Age 15
Toya Age 16
~Toya's POV~
I was trapped in darkness, and had been for a long time. Occasionally I'd hear Aika's voice giving me updates about my family and whatever random thoughts popped into her head at the time. When I couldn't hear Aika I found myself reliving memories.
A voice penetrated the darkness, a familiar voice though I knew not to who it belonged. “Its been three years, perhaps we should revisit the conversation about keeping him in this state.”
“Kindly fuck off, Doctor.” Aika's voice snapped coolly at my side. She sounded different.
There was a heavy sigh followed by the sound of someone's retreating footsteps.
I felt something warm slip into my hand. “Please wake up. I miss you.”
I struggled to open my eyes and winced at the brightness. The sound of a sharp gasp drew my gaze. It took a moment for my eyes to adjust. At my side was a girl of 15 who looked a lot like Aika, she had the same silvery white hair and blue gray eyes. There was a burn scar crawling up the side of her neck and disappearing under her shirt. Tears welled in her eyes and she threw her arms around me with a cry.
“You're awake!” She sobbed.
“Aika?” I asked unsure, my voice didn't sound like it should, it was scratchy and deeper than I remembered.
She didn't release me and kept sobbing. “I'm so sorry! I couldn't reverse it all. There was too much damage. I’m so sorry!”
My body felt heavy and I struggled to lift my hand and place it to the back of her head. “Aika.”
“There was so much blood and every inch of you was covered in burns, to the bone in some places!” She wailed.
“Aika.” I tried again.
“I'm so sorry! I wasn't strong enou-.”
“AIKA!”
She stopped her rambling and pulled back a little so she could look at me. I couldn't stand to see the look in her eyes, pain, guilt and self-loathing.
“Thanks for saving me.” I smiled.
Tears streamed down her cheeks and she tackled me again with a hug.
I held her for a long moment as she sobbed against me.
“Aika, how long has it been?” I asked once she calmed down.
She released me and sat back, “three years.”
She hadn't even known me for that long and yet she'd been holding out hope for me and fighting so hard to keep me alive, all this time. I thought back on all the times I'd heard her voice giving me random updates about my family and realized they were most likely real and not a weird fever dream. She kept tabs on them for me.
“Hey, help me up. I want to go visit my home.” I extended a hand to her.
She nodded and jumped to her feet before rushing to assist me.
“Hold on a minute.” that voice I didn't recognize sounded from the doorway. I saw an older man with a bald head and bushy mustache. He was short and stout and wore a pair of goggles that somewhat resembled gears over his eyes.
Aika ignored him and helped me to sit up.
“The boy isn't going to make it for more than a mon-.”
Aika turned on him with a glare, “we no longer require your services.”
The old man sighed and walked off.
I threw her a curious look. “What's up?”
“Now that you're awake, I can use my quirk to reverse the clock on your injuries again. I've been practicing, I have more control now.” She smiled at me.
“Does it still hurt you?” I asked.
She nodded.
“Then don't bother.” I shakily swung my legs over the side of the bed before hopping to my feet.
Aika steadied me. With her help I was able to get up and shuffle to the bathroom. I managed to get her to leave me alone and find me a change of clothes. Once I was alone I glanced in the bathroom mirror. The entire bottom half of my face was burned and appeared to be hanging on due to medical staples. There were more burn scars and medical staples under my eyes. My arms and legs were covered in dark burns and parts of my torso. The most alarming part was how much older I looked. Three years had gone by and rather than a boy of 13 I was 16 now.
There was a soft knock at the bathroom door, “I got you some clothes.” Aika said softly.
I opened the door to let her in and got a better look at her. As she extended the clothes to me. My gaze was drawn to her hands, there were burn scars across her palms. Did it happen when she'd saved me? How badly had she been hurt?
“Thanks.” I took the clothes from her.
After I spent a little bit of time getting ready, I stepped outside. Aika hovered around me waiting to see if I needed help. Reluctantly, I accepted her help and we left the strangely empty hospital that seemed more like a secret lair than an actual public hospital.
With Aika's help we made it back to my home. Everything was strangely still and quiet, there wasn't even a breeze in the air. I glanced around and realized Aika must have activated her quirk without my notice and it seemed her time-freeze field had grown larger as it was now covering several blocks.
I stepped inside with Aika at my heels. My father was in the training room with Shoto, Natsuo and Fuyumi were in their rooms looking somber as they worked on homework and my mother was nowhere to be found. The house looked relatively the same until we got to my room. there was a shrine there, a shrine for me. Absently I rubbed my hands over my lower jaw.
Sensing my train of thought Aika stepped in, “they only found your lower jaw bone, you were declared dead.”
I would have been, if she hadn't been there to save me. I stared down at my shrine feeling strangely lost and disconnected.
“Toya?” Aika threw me a worried look.
“I'll probably have to come up with some kind of alias.” I noted quietly.
“Why?” Aika asked curiously.
“Because Toya Todoroki is dead.” I felt strangely motivated. I still needed to get stronger, I needed to find a way to expose my father and ruin him. “I think I'll go by Dabi.”
Aika watched me carefully.
“I need to change my look.” I extended a hand to her, “how are your hair dying skills?”
“Horrible.” Aika grinned, “but I'll try my best.”
I couldn't help but smile. “Let's go.”
