Chapter Nine
Brendon pulled on the reins of the horse, ushering it forward out of the small stables. By the time you were outside again, the sun had fallen and the soft hues of the sky were dark. The moon was slowly rising above the tree line that surrounded all sides of the mansion, it's pale yellow light shining on the grounds.
As Brendon lead the horse into the fields surrounding the mansion you felt the awkwardness return as you realized how close Brendon was now. You could feel his cold breath on your neck, as his arms wrapped in front of you, holding the hoses reins.
The horse whinnied as he pulled it to a stop, leaving you standing in the middle of the field. The awkwardness was thick now in the silence, but your heart was thumping with anticipation. You were sure Brendon could hear it.
"Does your horse have a name?" You asked, breaking the silence.
"Her name is Abnus," Brendon whispered, as if he didn't want to break the night's silence.
You nodded and let your hand rest on the mare's neck before gently stroking her. For a moment, you were at peace, but a melancholy howl ruptured the silence, sending chills down your spine. Following the sound, you turned your head to the tree line and saw the dark shape of a wolf barely visible in the moonlight.
Noticing the moon was full, you asked, "is that a werewolf?"
You were surprised to hear Brendon's laughter following your question. It was so sudden, and it certainly wasn't the response you were expecting.
"What?"
"Werewolves don't exist," he said still chuckling at you.
"Well I didn't know that! Hell, I didn't think vampires existed, but here you are."
Abnus whinnied worriedly as the wolf crept closer, creeping through the grass, and you began to wonder if it would attack you. But your thoughts were settled when Brendon ushered her forward, walking away from the wolf.
"That wolf comes here every year on the same night and howls for the mate that it's lost. I used to envy it, having even known its mate."
"That's so sad. It sounded so lonely."
Brendon sighed before saying, "loneliness is one of the worst pains anyone–anything–can feel. But I have you now. I'm not lonely anymore."
He leaned towards you as Abnus walked. You felt his fangs against your neck, and you wondered if he would bite you now. But he pulled back and instead rested his head on your shoulder. His hands brushed against yours, and you looked down. Sensing your uneasiness, he moved his hands away, giving you space. You rolled your eyes and smiled to yourself before wrapping your hands in his. You could practically feel the surprise radiating off him. You were surprised as well.
"Wait," you said, as Brendon guided Abnus to the stables. "I want to look at the sky."
Brendon stopped Abnus again, allowing you to look upwards at all the constellations and the glowing moon. It still fascinated you how the stars twinkled in the darkness and how the moon lit up everything so much more when there weren't street lamps everywhere.
"I wish the sky would look like this all the time," you sighed.
"Hey moon, please forget to fall down, Hey moon, don't you go down," Brendon sang.
You eyes widened at Brendon's voice and you smiled. You had no idea he could sing, and sing so well.
"I didn't know you could sing," you said, turning your head to look at him.
"I haven't sang in a long time. But yes, I can sing."
"Could you- Could you do it again?" You asked. You tried not to sound too desperate, but truthfully you wanted nothing more than to hear his voice again. For being a vampire, he sounded a lot like an angel.
"Sure, let's go inside."
He lead Abnus back to the stables and dismounted before helping you down. You smoothed out your dress and held tightly onto Brendon's suit jacket, making sure you didn't drop it. Brendon then lead you back inside, holding your hand and pulling you along. You walked back upstairs to the room with the piano, and he sat you down on the bench before seating himself.
Lifting his hands, he began to play the keys, and you stared, fascinated by sounds of the piano. And again you were awestruck when his voice met your ears.
"The moment you arrived, they built you up
The sun was in your eyes, you couldn't believe it
Riches all around, you're walking
Stars are on the ground, you start to believe it
Every face along the boulevard
Is a dreamer just like you
You looked at death in a tarot card
And you saw what you had to do
But nobody knows you now, when you're dying in LA
And nobody owes you now, when you're dying in LA
When you're dying in LA, when you're dying in LA
The power, the power, the power
Oh, the power, the power, the power
Of LA
Nights at the chateau, trapped in your sunset bungalow
You couldn't escape it, yeah
Drink of paradise, they told you "Put your blood on ice"
You're not gonna make it
Every face along the boulevard
Is a dreamer just like you
You looked at death in a tarot card
And you saw what you had to do
But nobody knows you now, when you're dying in LA
And nobody owes you now, when you're dying in LA
When you're dying in LA, when you're dying in LA
The power, the power, the power
Oh, the power, the power, the power
Of LA"
You were beyond amazed. He was talented beyond measure. And you wanted nothing more than to listen to him sing forever.
"That was beautiful," you admitted, looking towards him. His eyes met yours and you felt yourself blush. Brendon's eyes flashed crimson and you looked away, leaving your neck exposed, which you realized was a mistake, as you felt his fangs pricking your neck.
You gasped as he dug his fangs into your jugular, sipping deeply on your blood. Letting out a euphoric sigh, you felt yourself slip forward into his grasp, where he held you tightly and almost lovingly.
Releasing his fangs from your neck, you gasped and lifted your hand to feel the bite mark. Brendon grabbed your hand, stopping you, and then proceeding to lick your wound to seal the bleeding.
He then lifted you off the piano bench and into his arms. You tried to keep your eyes open but they only slumped closed with the lulling motion of walking. You felt him set you down on the bed and tuck you in.
"Wait," you managed to squeak out, feeling him slip away. "Stay."
As your eyes fluttered open you could see the surprised look on his face. You were surprised at yourself too. Truthfully, you were a little scared to have him stay, but you didn't want to be alone either.
You felt the bed dip and you turned around to face him. As your eyes fluttered open and closed again you could see him watching you, a soft smile on his face. Slowly you began to drift off, but before you did you felt Brendon kiss your forehead.
•
You woke up to Brendon's arm wrapped around you and his breathing in your ear. At first you began to panic at his closeness, but you reminded yourself that he was only asleep.
Sneaking your arm under his, you tried to lift it so you could escape, but your idea backfired. Instead of remaining unaware, his grip around you tightened and he pulled you closer to him, his head buried in your neck. Shivers went down your spine from his closeness. His breathing was tickling your neck.
"Brendon," you whispered, gently trying to wake him up.
Instead he let out a low growl and pulled you closer still. In fact, it was hard for you to breathe against his crushing grip. He really didn't want to let you go.
"Brendon," you gasped this time, "you're crushing me!"
He finally woke up from your loud tone of voice and looked toward his arm wrapped around you tightly. With one swift movement he had let go of you and exited the bed. You laid there, trying to catch your breath.
"Sorry," he said in a low tone.
"It's okay."
You sat up slowly and stretched. You felt quite refreshed, but you hadn't showered last night so you were sure you didn't smell too great.
"I'm going to shower. Do you want to have breakfast with me afterwards? I mean, I know you don't really eat, but–"
"Yes," he said quickly, cutting off your rambling. "I'd like that."
You nodded and slid off the bed, retreating to the bathroom. Slipping off the dress you still had on, you made sure to set it out to be washed. Then, you took of your undergarments before turning on the shower and stepping into it. The water felt hot against your skin, like it was melting you. It reminded you of how cold Brendon's home was.
As your mind was lost in your thoughts, you subconsciously continued washing your body and hair, until you were sure you were clean. Once you were finished, you turned off the water and grabbed a towel from the pile on the sink.
A knocked sounded at the door, and you scrambled to get the towel rapped around you. Though Brendon had already seen you naked, you didn't plan on letting it happen again. At least for now, you thought.
"Yes?" You called.
"It's me, the maid. I wanted to let you know I laid out a dress for you and I'll be washing your clothes later."
"Okay, thank you!" You called, walking to the dressing room. Indeed the maid had set out an outfit for you. It was a long sleeved, deep red gown and a pair of undergarments.
You changed quickly, your stomach growling. Though you didn't want to admit it, you also wanted to see Brendon again. His presence, though ominous sometimes, was comforting.
After you finished dressing yourself, you tied your hair up into a bun and fresher yourself up in the bathroom once again. Then you left, exiting the bathroom and then the bedroom, so you could find Brendon. To your surprise, he was waiting just outside the bedroom door for you. Though to prevent you from escaping, or to be a gentleman, you didn't know.
"Ready?" He asked.
"Ready," you said, joining him by his side.
