Chapter Four

We needed to get off the plane.

Before I could process that thought anymore, Eric had jumped out of his seat and started walking around the plane, in search of something.

"What's going on?" I asked him, getting out of my seat myself. He continued searching around frantically, not answering me.

"Eric!" I yelled out, louder this time as I felt myself grow more worried. "What the hell is going on?"

"The plane's been hijacked," he called back, the frustration clear in his voice. "It's the RFI, we need to get off now."

I froze dead in my tracks. I felt my blood run cold as fear struck me. There were rogue spies on the plane.

Correction: There were rogue spies flying the plane.

I turned around, running towards the back of the plane. I could my breathing grow heavy as I tried to remain calm. My entire body felt like shaking as I tried to come to terms with what was happening around me. And what was about to happen. I tried to snap my attention back to doing my job.

Mackenzie was still fast asleep, her eyes shut and mouth hanging open as she lounged comfortably on the two seats in her row, her limbs spread out and leg dangling over the seat.

"Mackenzie, wake up." I grabbed her shoulder, shaking her as hard as I could.

She moved back and forth as I shook her violently. Her eyes were still glued shut as she let out a small grumble.

"Mackenzie!" I repeated, raising my voice but trying not to make it too loud. I felt the situation growing more urgent as I heard movement from behind me, presumably, Eric doing something. I had to wake her up.

Her head turned to the side as her eyes opened slightly. "Fuck off," she muttered groggily as she shuffled over to improve her comfort.

"We need to get off the plane right now," I told her, as I shook her again desperately.

Her eyebrows furrowed. "We're already here?" she asked, stirring some more before her eyes opened completely.

"No, the RFI hijacked the plane!" I snapped, beginning to feel anger through my quaking fear.

Realization hit her eyes as she shot up in an instant. She jolted awake as she hopped out of her seat, barging past me, barely giving me a chance to register her sudden movement.

I ran behind her as she made it to the front of the plane where Eric was crouched on the floor, opening cupboards and digging through them frantically.

He emptied them out as he threw the items they contained behind him with no care. Files, folders, rope, containers and other random things flew past me as he continued burrowing his hands in the full cupboards.

"Eric, what are you doing?" I asked as I bent down to his level.

He continued moving quickly as I stepped back to move out of his way. "Looking for parachutes," he answered, the sound of strong command and seriousness in his voice. A tone I'd never heard him use before.

It suddenly clicked in my head what he was doing and why.

I felt my face go pale as cold blooded fear washed through me. "We-we're going to jump out of the plane?"I breathed as I felt my throat tighten.

We were going to jump out of the plane.

We were going to jump out of the airplane.

In mid-flight.

I looked at him in horror as I felt myself grow weak at just the thought of it. A thought that was going to become a reality.

"We need to get off this plane," he said, confirming my fear. We were really doing this.

I stood in shock as I watched him continue to look inside the cupboards, the anger and frustration growing clearly in his face.

"Where are they?" he growled as his jaw tightened.

I could feel the situation growing more anxious and tense as I looked around frantically in confusion.

My eyes turned to the door to the control room where the rogue spies were.

Had they heard us yet? Did they know we were out of our seats?

We only had a limited amount of time before they would notice our movement or hear the commotion. And the moment they did, things would get life threatening and we would need to move even faster.

Mackenzie was behind me and as I turned to look at her I realized she was standing by the door, almost ready to open it when Eric found parachutes.

It was then another fear struck me. I had never used a parachute before. I had no idea how any of it worked or what would happen. And Mackenzie was standing by the door, ready to unseal it at an instant for us to exit.

As more junk piled up on the floor from Eric emptying the contents of the cabinets, I began kicking it out of the way with my feet. They were tangled in cords and ripping paper as I forced them out of my path.

I helplessly looked around, trying to come up with a plan if the spies heard us and they attacked. We might have to fight them back.

"Eric," I hissed urgently. "Where is that bag of weapons you had?" I asked in hope. I was suddenly feeling thankful that Eric had packed them all. If we could have an advantage on them, we could defeat them easily.

He looked at me, a glint of hope in his eyes as he remembered them himself. "They're..." he turned around, his eyes drifting around the area we'd been sitting and then he sighed in anger. "I gave them to Ramone."

I looked at him in horror. Our pilot Ramone had been in the control room. Where the rogue spies were currently residing. The weapons were not with us. They were with our enemies. Great.

Before I had another moment to process the situation, a sudden shout caught my attention as my eyes shot up to the control room door and I registered movement through the bottom of the door. The voice was loud and frantic.

"They're coming!" I yelled out as I came to the realization myself.

I took a step back as I could hear the door being unlocked. I quickly snapped my head towards Eric, looking for direction.

He stood up, moving towards me. "I'll handle them. You two keep looking," he ordered, his voice loud and commanding.

I hurriedly tried to follow his order, moving behind him towards the cupboards that were still piled up with junk. Mackenzie brushed past me in a flash as she dove into the mess frantically.

We had to keep looking for parachutes while Eric was about to deal with whoever would come barging out to attack us at any moment. He was buying us time.

The sound of the door opening made my breathing hitch as loud voices called out and heavy footsteps were heard running in our direction.

Two rugged men came charging towards Eric. I caught small glimpses of their appearance. Facial hair, black clothing and large frames.

Before either had a chance to make contact with Eric, he began swinging at them, knocking one of them back a few steps while the other began to charge at him again.

I returned my attention back to Mackenzie as I saw her continue to dig and remembered my instructions. I quickly knelt to the ground, trying to avoid looking over at Eric in the middle of his fight.

I had to trust that he would be able to handle the situation. I knew he would, but I couldn't help the worry flowing through me as my arms began to shake, opening cupboard doors in a hurry.

I wasn't even sure exactly what I was looking for. I didn't even know what the parachutes would look like. But Mackenzie's fast pace next to me kept me going as I searched through a newly opened cupboard, trying to keep up with her speed.

Why was there so much junk on this plane? I knew they must have all held significant importance and been useful for some reason, but it was getting ridiculous. A dark humorous part of me found it ironic that the one thing you would really need when on a plane, was hidden away like it was unimportant. In a sense, it must have been seen as unnecessary. There's no way the RUA could have predicted this happening. Our enemy had managed to get on our aircraft without being noticed or arousing any suspicion.

"Jesus Christ, where are they?" Mackenzie growled as she threw a heavy guide book past me, landing on the floor in front of Eric who was still fighting the men. My eyes were brought to the confrontation.

He elbowed one of them men firmly in the face and as the man stumbled back clutching onto his face, the other lunged at Eric, barely giving him a moment to regain any strength. As he sent the man flying back with a firm punch, the one who had been punched in the face had returned, ready to attack again. He couldn't catch a break and the annoyance was clear on his face.

I tried to draw my eyes away from the scene and continue searching but I couldn't bring myself to do so out of pure worry. I trusted that he could take them down easily, he'd taken on worse. But he'd been more prepared in those situations. Tactics, weapons and backup. We'd been caught completely off guard in this situation. I didn't want to see him get hurt.

As he continued to fight the two Russian spies, one of them called out loudly, his voice directed to the control room. A moment later, another man emerged, running at Eric while he attempted to fight off the two men who were already throwing punches his way.

He had been handling the two rogue agents well but as the third entered, I noticed he began to struggle slightly more as he was constantly trying to block all the blows coming his way from different directions.

At the first moment he was caught off guard, one of the men reached at him from behind, grabbing a hold of his shoulders, pulling him back roughly as the other two began kicking and punching him. With Eric being subdued, it would only be a matter of time until they started attacking Mackenzie and I as well. He struggled to break free of the tight hold the spy had on him but the desperation on his face was clear to escape the situation as he continued being beaten up.

I couldn't watch any longer as with every attack on him I felt myself growing more and angrier. Before I could stop myself or even realize what I was doing, I was on my feet, barging my way over to the scene and grabbing a hold of the Russian who held his grip on Eric.

I used all my strength to forcefully shove into his back, causing him to lose his control for a moment and allowing Eric a moment to break free from his grasp. With that split second of distraction, he was able to begin attacking the two men again.

I only got a quick glimpse of his strike back, before the other Russian spy I had collided with grabbed me in a headlock in a moment of surprise.

His firm grip around my neck caused me to gasp for breath as my hands reached for his, desperately trying to unlock his fingers that were suffocating me.

As I pulled with all my might and wriggled to be free, his hands still remained tightly in place. I tossed and turned for a moment before resulting in kicking my leg back, aiming for his crotch. I heard his yelp of pain as his grip loosened enough for me to gain an advantage and free myself.

As I pushed him off me, I quickly turned back around to face him.

I wasn't going to let him get away with what he'd just done.

I could feel the rage fuel through me that had boiled up after those few moments of being powerless.

I charged at him with all my strength as I pushed him back. His heavy, strong figure only moved slightly with my force but gave me the second I needed to throw a punch at his jaw.

As my fist collided with his face, I saw him attempt to grab my arm from the corner of my eye.

I quickly moved it out of his reach as I threw another punch, earning another groan from him as his face knocked to the side.

I continued attacking him as I felt him grow less and less powerful. My sudden quick movements were enough to keep him from regaining himself and attacking me back.

When I finally believed he was weak enough, I grabbed his arms, twisting them a much as I could. His yelp of pain was heard distinctly and while it felt sickening to do so, I felt a burst of energy inside me, encouraging me to continue.

With both my arms busy twisting his own back, I lifted a leg and gave a powerful kick that sent him flying forward until he smashed into a row of seats and fell back, hitting the ground. His head being knocked against the hard surface of the metal ends of a chair in the process. The loud metal clang followed by him throwing his head back and groaning in pain let me know that I had won and he would be in too much pain to get back up.

I turned back around to Eric immediately after to check if he was handling himself okay after being overpowered for a moment.

I could see him still swinging at a bearded man who was wrestling him against a wall. I noticed the other man he'd been fighting already on the floor, bruised, bloody and eyes shut, looking as though he'd passed out - or possibly even died.

I didn't want to think about which one was true as I turned my eyes away from the sickening sight of his unconscious body.

"Found them!" Mackenzie's voice piped up, interrupting my thoughts.

Eric and I both snapped our heads in her direction as she held up two parachute bags in each hand.

I turned back to Eric who had quickly resumed fighting the spy who was still attempting to take him down.

"You both go! I'll be there soon!" He called out as he sent a forceful punch to his opponent's stomach.

I looked at him in horror. "Eric, no!" I begged, my voice yelling above the cries of the rogue spy. I didn't want to leave without him.

"GO NOW!" he ordered as his voice boomed loudly as he continued fighting.

Mackenzie barged past me dropping a backpack a few meters from Eric as she grabbed my arm quicker than I could even begin to protest.

"Hurry!" Mackenzie called out to him as she turned the hatch using some sort of device to help unseal the plane door.

She stopped in the middle of her work, grabbing the backpack she still carried with her, putting it on her back.

I took a step back as she reached forward for me but she too slow as she grabbed me, placing me in front of her, clipping it to my stomach, tightening the straps until my stomach was sucking in.

I suddenly felt the urge to throw up as I grew weak and dizzy.

With the backpack attaching the two of us together, she reached forward, dragging me with her as she continued trying to unseal the door.

I stayed frozen as her arms stretched out in front of me, too afraid to make the slightest movement.

"I'm about to open it Eric!" she called out as the sound of pressure began to get louder and louder.

I regained enough strength to turn around and see Eric putting on his own backpack as he continued to fend off the Russian who was now trying to grab the parachute off him in a desperate attempt.

Mackenzie took a step back, dragging us both out of the way of the entrance as she leaned up against the wall, pulling at the door with all her force.

And before I had another second to think, the doors burst wide open. A loud sound pierced my ears as the wind whipped around like we were in the eye of a hurricane. I understood why he had moved away from the door as the overwhelming pressure felt like it was going to suck us out of the plane.

I was shaking so much that I was certain I was only moments away from passing out. I was suddenly extremely thankful for my bathroom trip earlier.

"Ready?" she yelled, her voice so close to my ear, yet almost impossible to hear due to the engine's screeching noise and the wind's howling sound.

"No!" I screamed out in reply, barely hearing my own voice.

"Too damn bad!" she called back.

And with that, without another word exchanged or another glance given, we jumped.
