Chapter Sixteen

Jenna gazed at her reflection in the bathroom mirror after taking off the black and peach mask on her face. She inhaled deeply and exhaled then stared down at the dagger in the sink that smelt of the metallic stench of blood as it washed away. She touched the dagger with shaking hands then stared at it studiously.

"Look what you're making me do, Jonathan. We were supposed to be that power couple but you let someone take away the spot you have for me in your heart. What did I ever do?" She demanded in a rough tone then looked up at her reflection. "I've turned to a murderer because of you. But, you know what? I'll do anything for you, Jonathan. Anything."

She let tears roll down her cheeks then leaned on the sink with eyes shut tightly. Jenna exhaled then picked up the dagger and hooked it back in the strap by her thigh, then wore the face mask back.

The soft music coming from the stage, echoed through out the noisy hall for the guests who either danced or stood in groups talking. Jenna made her way into the gathering and paused to look around for Jonathan, who was no where to be found in the mass.

"Where would my husband be?" She asked and kept on looking out for him.

She walked through the gathering for a moment and when she found him, she smiled and kicked her leg forward in a stride to meet him but stopped instantly.

"What are you doing, Jenna? The police are after you and he should know this by now," her conscience scolded beside her in a similar attire and a scowl.

Jenna frowned. "No. I'm sure Jonathan will believe me if I tell him that I didn't kill anyone. He's my husband and he's supposed to believe me and stand by me."

She kept her brown eyes on his back as he spoke to the people around him then smiled softly when he turned in her direction. Jenna took in his perfectly styled hair, strong jawline, well tailored suit and the sad smile on his face. She sighed then gasped when he made eye contact with her, she stilled as he kept on staring at her up and down with a certain emotion in his eyes before his eyes widened in recognition.

"Jenna?!" He yelled and she gasped.

The hall got silent after calling out her name, and from a distance, Jenna saw a disturbance and then the sight of some police officers heading towards her side. She felt her heart beat faster and mouth go dry then looked back at Jonathan who had worry stretched over his face.

"I love you!" She yelled out to him then ran through the guests, knocking a few down and getting curses from some.

Jenna could hear the calls coming from the police officers on her tail and increased her speed even in the gown she wore. She yanked her mask off her face in annoyance and kept breezing through the guests who could not give way for her to pass and all of a sudden, she was tackled to the cold floor by a police officer.

"Get off of me!" She yelled and thrashed under the man who had her pinned down. She grunted as she struggled under him and quickly reached for her gun, pulled it out and shot the officer in the stomach, the crowd dispersed.

Jenna stood up, looked around the stampeding crowd and made eye contact with Jonathan who had fear and disappointment in his brown eyes. She whimpered and shook her head then ran away, ignoring the fact that her husband was calling out to her.

The wanted woman found her way outside the building complex and kept running to where she had packed her car, she swore under her breath when she realized that she had forgotten her clutch where the car key had been then paced around. When she heard the police officers' yells coming from a distance, she panicked and stared back at the car.

"Ah!" She cried out as she smashed the bottom of the gun aggressively on the window of the car, which shattered then tucked her hand inside and unlocked it then boarded the car.

She dropped her gun and wiped the sweat from her face while her fearsome gaze was a far. She looked down at her laps then placed her shaking hands underneath the steering wheel, yanked the cords out and desperately tried to connect the two wires to start the engine.

"Stop right there!" An officer hollered as he got close to the car, his mates right behind him.

"Come on, come on!" She whispered as she struggled then the car started, she sat up straight and reversed speedily out of the parking lot before they began to release fire at her.

Jenna got into the street and drove off, she looked over at the rear mirror when she heard the familiar sirens of their patrol cars and increased the speed of her car until she got onto the highway but they still followed her closely.

Jenna hit the gas harder and drove faster on the slightly busy highway of the New York town, swerving past the honking cars and avoiding getting hit by other cars coming her way.

After a few minutes of chase and dodging cars, she drove into a different lane where she eventually lost them. She exhaled heavily and rested her head on the steering wheel and breath heavily.

She began to cry.

"I didn't want this, I swear. I never wanted everything to end like this," she said to herself then raised her head to look at her reflection in the rear view mirror. "Look what you've turned out to be, Jenna. All because of a man who couldn't love one woman! Are you happy?!"

She screamed and repeatedly hit her fist on the handle of the steering wheel.

"Why me? What did I ever do?" She demanded and held her face. "God, please forgive me. I had to do it but with the way he looked at me, it'll take a miracle for him to forgive me."

"But you've eliminated the one person who caused this drift," the first Jenna said out loud.

The weeping woman paused and looked over at the other woman beside her who only nodded and relaxed on the leather chair.

"Did you not see the way he looked at me? Talk more of what he'll do if he finds out that I killed Vera!" she spat and the other Jenna shrugged.

"Jonathan loves you and he'll never be that kind of person. He's yours and you're his. Everything will be fine."

Jenna blinked and her other version vanished. She leaned on the steering wheel again then exhaled hard.

"God, above, forgive my sins and wash them away with thy son's blood. For I was tempted and I pray that I will be forgiven, amen," she prayed then sat up with mischievous smile.

Jenna drove along the dark and lonely road until she stopped at a gas station, got off and refueled the car after checking for change in the car. Her eyes drifted over to the store behind her then smiled and made her way into the convenient store after she was done with the gas pump.

She ignored the dozing sales man behind the counter and made her way to the aisle that had a few clothes. She picked up black jeans, a navy blue shirt then a black sweatshirt. As she made her way past the clothing aisle, her eyes landed on the beauty product section, where she grabbed a hair dye, scissors and other things before scurrying to the restroom.

Jenna dumped everything and stared at her reflection in the restroom mirror then gazed down at the items on the counter. She sighed and gently removed her dress, took off the leather strap around her thigh and pulled on the black jeans that fit like a second skin on her legs. She pulled on the blue shirt and ruffled her straightened hair.

She silently touched her hair, while looking at it from her reflection then chuckled. Jenna picked up the scissors then hesitantly pushed it into her dark hair and cut off a lock of her hair irregularly. She held the locks and stared at it in horror.

Flashback...

"Do you know one thing I love about you?" Jonathan asked while twirling a lock of her hair between his index finger and thumb. "Hmm?"

Jenna shook her head and rested it on his bare chest, after placing a tender kiss on it.

"It's so soft, smells like heaven and I love how rich it looks," he said and smelled her hair. "I'm addicted to the length and the way it invades my sense of smell. It turns me on too."

"Oh, shut up," Jenna retorted playfully.

Jenna dropped the chunk of hair and backed away from the mirror and dropped the scissors before dropping to the floor. She gripped her hair tight and began to breath heavily.

Flashback...

Jenna strolled through the hallway of her husband's business building, that led her to the section where she met the workers who happily greeted her until she got to the slightly opened door of her husband's office.

Just as she was about to step in, she heard the voices of Vera and Jonathan from the office, which made her pause to listen attentively.

"Did I ever tell you how much I love your hair? I mean, I've always found girls who have silky black hair like yours, cool. It's like running my hands through smooth and clean water," she heard Jonathan say and Vera laugh in her cheery way.

"Please, who are you flattering?" Vera asked.

"You hurt me, Vera. Can I not compliment my best friend? I have a beautiful best friend and anyone who marries you will be damn lucky to run his fingers through those locks."

Vera laughed but Jenna felt her heart tighten.

Jenna shot up from the floor, picked up the scissors and poised it over her head then began to cut off her hair with heavily teary eyes. She scissored the dark locks off until it was an irregular mess that stopped below her ear. She dropped the scissors and ruffled the hair, which was now a boyish mass on her scalp.

"How do you see me now, huh?" She asked and stared down at the dye on the counter. "I know you'll love my new looks. It'll make you forget just what you used to love and also have the police off my back in public places."

Jenna prepared the dye mixture and used her fingers to run the mixture into her short hair, massaging the product roughly through the hair and left it for a few minutes before washing it off and drying it with her gown.

After a few minutes, she removed the gown from her head and stared at her new look, she found herself smiling at her new appearance, her hair was now a maroon boyish style. She bit her bottom lip and ruffled the hair, making some locks drop over her forehead.

After she was done with the bathroom, Jenna walked past the sleeping salesman who immediately woke up with a start when she left through the door. She got to her car, dumped the gown into the back and rushed to the driver's seat and started the car. She exhaled and looked at her reflection in the rear view mirror and smirked.

She pointed her joined index finger and middle finger at the mirror and made the sound of a gun with a silencer with my mouth. She dropped her hand and laughed.
