CHAPTER EIGHTY-FIVE

Pure panic washed over Eleanor as she left Amelia's office for the day. It was Amelia who suggested that Eleanor leave early, especially after Umbridge started the wild claims that someone had purposely spilt the hot tea all down the woman's front. Amelia told Umbridge that she was being ridiculous and had burned herself by not holding onto her teacup properly, but Eleanor knew what she had witnessed.

She had seen her jumper slide back into her bag, the same bag that she was currently holding close to her body. She told herself to go home, in hopes of dealing with it in private, however, it seemed her subconscious had a different plan as she found herself arriving at the Diggory Household.

Anne had been in the middle of dusting in the sitting room, swishing her wand about when she was startled by Eleanor arriving in the fireplace.

"Eleanor!" she gasped, clutching her hand to the front of her shirt. "Merlin's beard, child, you scared me! Cedric didn't mention that you were coming over. Are you alright? You look a bit pale."

"Sorry, Mrs Diggory, I didn't mean to startle you, but I...I just got off my first day at my internship and I wanted to talk to Cedric. I should have sent an owl, but I was too excited," Eleanor quickly lied, "is Cedric home?"

"Oh yes, of course, he's upstairs in his room resting," Anne told her, gesturing towards the staircase, "you know where it is."

With a nod and a smile, Eleanor excused herself before heading up the stairs to her best friend's room, she quickly knocked her knuckles against the door and waited for several seconds before she heard the sound of footsteps approaching. The door swung open with Cedric leaning his head back and with a heavy sigh.

"For the last time, Mum, I'm fine. Really, I- Ellie?! What are you doing here?"

Not waiting for a second longer, Eleanor pushed Cedric back into his bedroom and closed the door behind them. She quickly threw her bag onto Cedric's bed and pulled out her wand, pointing it directly at her belongings. Cedric had no choice but to stand in complete bewilderment as Eleanor had yet to even greet him before barging into his room.

"Ellie," Cedric whispered, reaching his hand out and gently placing it on her shoulder, "what are you doing? What's wrong?"

"My jumper is alive, Queenie!"

For a moment, Cedric said nothing, but the look on his face said every thought that was running through his mind. He reached out slowly and pushed for Eleanor to lower her wand and then turned her around to face him. Upon seeing his face, Eleanor placed her free hand over her eyes and groaned.

"Oh, I know it sounds mad, but you have to believe me, Queenie!"

"I see that in moments of chaos, that nickname still sticks," Cedric scoffed under his breath before he shook his head and turned his focus back to Eleanor. "Alright, walk me through everything, Ellie. What happened?"

Eleanor quickly informed Cedric of everything that had occurred in Amelia Bones' office, from the start of the day to the end where Umbridge had been burned. The whole time she rambled away, Cedric nodded his head to show that he was listening, while also writing a letter that he handed off to the family owl, requesting backup at his house.

"It's happened before!" Eleanor cried out causing him to jump near the window after the owl flew off. "Back when we were at school. It was the same night I had detention with Artemis. I took my jumper off because it was hot, Artemis and I got into an argument, and I walked away. But she swore up and down that my jumper slapped her in the face. At the time, I thought she was just saying things to provoke me, but it did happen. My clothes are moving on their own!"

"Shhh, Ellie, calm down," Cedric motioned her to keep her voice down, not to attract his mother's attention. "Are you sure about this? You told me that you enchanted some of your clothing so that we would never lose them, remember?"

"That was just on the socks and stuff," Eleanor shook her head, "I did it so that you would always have a matching pair, or you couldn't leave the scarf behind. I did not enchant my clothing to smack people! This is different, this is way different."

Cedric sat on his bed with a slight sigh, unsure of how to get Eleanor to calm down as she started pacing back and forth in his room.

"I think you're overreacting," he said, "there is probably a perfectly good explanation for all this. We know that your clothes are enchanted, enough that they work against the Killing Curse. However, we are almost talking about your clothes being almost...sentient. And that's just silly! OW!!"

Eleanor's head whipped to the side as Cedric jumped up and rubbed the back of his head. The two of them stood witness to Eleanor's jumper that was no longer inside of her bag, but now resting on Cedric's bed.

The two teens exchanged glances before taking several steps back.

Meanwhile, Fred and George had been attempting to keep themselves busy at Grimmauld Place, doing their best to eavesdrop on any incoming news. But it was difficult to do so when all the older adults continued to close the doors or tell them to go and find something to do. Fred tried to argue that they were considered adults and not to mention, he knew his girlfriend was among the topics they were discussing, so he had a right to be included. However, his mother told him otherwise, telling him and George to look after their younger siblings. Not that his mother's scolding had ever discouraged him and that was what led the two to start developing their latest invention, eavesdropping ears.

Or as George had cleverly named them: Extendable Ears.

They had a few things to work out but so far the prototype was doing its job quite well. They would dangle the flesh-coloured string over the railing of the stairs or stick them under doors while shoving the other side of the string into their own ears. It allowed them to listen in on some of the Order's discussions and Fred wasn't sure if he liked what he overheard.

"The Ministry is fighting Dumbledore on the idea of You-Know-Who's returned," someone mumbled, it sounded like Nixie, "which means they are already labelling Harry and Cedric as liars, despite the fact they are both two eyewitnesses. But perhaps that can play in our favour for a little bit."

"What do you mean in our favour?" Moody's gruff voice interjected. "The sheep are following whatever the Daily Prophet tells them."

"I know," Nixie responded, "however, let's be real, we all know You-Know-Who is after Harry. He wants to finish what he started, but there is now someone who poses to stand in his way. Cedric didn't survive just by luck and You-Know-Who is far too smart to believe such a thing. He knows something out there was strong enough to stop the Killing Curse a second time. He's not just going to let that go. Thankfully, he doesn't know about Eleanor and the more the Ministry tries to cover everything up, the longer we can conceal Eleanor's involvement."

Fred backed away from the kitchen door, feeling slightly sick to his stomach. He remembered when Dumbledore announced You-Know-Who's return, he remembered the feeling of dread that fell over him. And he knew that Eleanor had her involvement, but at the time, he only focused on the fact that she had saved Cedric's life with her knitting. It was a miracle, something to be celebrated. He didn't think of the idea that it made her a prime target with You-Know-Who and his followers. Because without knowing it to the fullest extent, Eleanor stood in the way of him killing Harry once and for all.

It made sense while the Order was so set on keeping any discussion of Eleanor's knitting quiet, enough that she couldn't knit out in the public eye, in fear that someone who was supposedly watching would figure out all her secrets. But Fred was certain that even Eleanor didn't know how her knitting worked completely, only enough that she understood how she was able to dodge pranks and spells, but how she blocked the Killing Curse, was still unknown to her and the rest of them.

Before Fred could say or do anything, he heard movement and the arrival of several people. He was about to hide when he heard his mother's voice, asking where he was. Attempting his best to look casual, Fred lifted his head when his mother opened the door to the kitchen and came over to where he was sitting.

"Fred, a message was sent to you and George at the Burrow. Apparently, you two are needed at the Diggory household. Cedric said he would explain when you two arrived."

Upon hearing his name, George appeared and looked over in the direction of his twin. They were definitely on friendly terms with Cedric but never had spoken to him alone, so they were curious as to why they were being summoned to the Diggory home. But they didn't hesitate to leave as it sounded quite urgent.

Shortly thereafter, Fred and George arrived at the Diggory Household, stepping out of the fireplace. They were immediately greeted by Cedric's mother, Anne, who looked happy but confused to see them. The two quickly told her that Cedric had invited them, and she nodded her head.

"First Eleanor, then Marnie, now you two, I wish he would have said something to me!" Anne shook her head with an amused grin. "I would have made something to eat for you all."

"No worries there," George told her, "Our mother stuffs us until we can't breathe. But we appreciate the offer!"

Anne directed the two boys upstairs but before they could go any further, they were greeted by Marnie, who was standing at the top apparently waiting for their arrival.

"What's going on?" Fred asked. "Is everything okay? Is Ellie here?"

"She is," Marnie answered, "but she's kind of losing it right now. I showed up a few minutes ago, walked in there and she and Cedric are insisting that her jumper is alive. So, we're going to go in there and be as calm as possible. No sudden movements."

The twins exchanged nervous glances but nodded their heads as they followed Marnie to approach a door. She slowly twisted the knob of the door and walked in with them close behind. Only for them to walk in on the scene of Cedric hiding behind Eleanor, while she had her wand pointed at the jumper resting on the bed.

"Show yourself, you coward!"

Fred could only stand still for a moment, watching his girlfriend threaten her jumper.

Under normal circumstances, he probably would have found it absolutely hilarious that she was threatening her clothes but seeing Eleanor's flustered face had Fred thinking otherwise. The only thing he had wished for that morning was for Eleanor to have a good first day at her internship. Which was why he had stopped Arthur on his way out that morning, asking his father to keep an eye out for Eleanor and help her navigate her way through the Ministry morning traffic. He had been hoping that she would arrive later at Grimmauld Place, excited and ready to tell him about her day.

"Love, why are you threatening your jumper?" Fred questioned as he approached her slowly. "What's going on here?"

Eleanor didn't say anything, but Cedric took it upon himself to inform everyone that the jumper was possessed and was capable of moving around on its own. Fred made his way to Ellie and pushed her wand down before he started approaching the jumper. Eleanor and Cedric leaned back, leaving Marnie and George to do the same out of precaution.

"Fred," Eleanor called his name, "don't touch it..."

"It's just a harmless little jumper, Ellie. One you made yourself, it's fine. See?" He lifted it up and set it back down, but it did not move. He turned around to face the others with an "I-told-you-so look." However, with his back turned, he could only witness the look of horror on everyone's face as they were staring behind him.

Before he could even look over his shoulder, his eyes were covered by two sleeves, leaving Fred to scream out and take off.

"THAT FUCKING THING TOUCHED ME! IT'S ALIVE! IT'S FUCKING ALIVE! RUN!"

George, Marnie, and Cedric raced out of the bedroom, following a screaming Fred outside of the Diggory home. Only Eleanor remained and could only watch as the jumper remained floating on its own before her.

She slowly reached out her hand, only to watch the jumper mirror her actions, touching the sleeve to the tip of her finger. Eleanor yanked her hand back for a moment and stared at the jumper in complete disbelief.

"How is this possible?" she whispered. "How..."

Before she could say anything else, the jumper moved forward and wrapped its sleeves around Eleanor. She was fully prepared to scream until she realised that her jumper was giving her a hug. Not only that, but it was also attempting to comfort her as it patted her on the back several times.

Pulling away after a moment, Eleanor touched her hand to her head and stumbled back. "I think I'm going to be sick; I need to sit down."

The screeching of a chair caused her to jump, only to see Cedric's desk chair pulled up behind her and the jumper behind it. Thinking that things couldn't get weirder, Eleanor plopped herself down and covered her face with her hands.

"This cannot be happening. I was just knitting, I was just knitting, and then all this happened. How am I doing this? Sure, with my wand...but it was only memories and stuff before. Now...now this..."

Once more, Eleanor pushed herself up and started walking around, all the way as she was talking to herself, her arms flailed about as she deemed herself the "Mad Knitter" the Frankenstein of Knitting. However, as she moved her arms about, she watched as the jumper started mirroring her actions once more. She raised her arms up, placed them down, placed her hands on her hips and the jumper followed.

"No...no..." she shook her head. "You're...not just alive.... you're me! You're part of me! When Artemis was hit, I wanted to hit her, but I didn't, you did. When Umbridge was in the office, I wanted her gone but I didn't do anything, but you did! You do what I want to actually do..."

"ELEANOR! ELEANOR!"

The sound of Fred's voice rang into the room from the bedroom window, causing Eleanor to look over. She could see Fred and her friends all outside, along with a very confused Anne.

"Eleanor! Just jump! I'll catch you!" Fred called to her as he held up his arms. "I'll save you! Don't you worry! If you don't jump, I'm coming back in!"

Eleanor turned away from the window and gave her attention back to the jumper that seemed to be patiently waiting for her to do or say something."

"Okay," she breathed, "you got slapping and hugging down, what else can you do?"
