one. the big news
Haunani Kahale liked working with Heyward, she liked the pressure she had on her to be active, she liked the rush of getting things, and help clients. Nani liked doing things like this alone, she could have all focus on her tasks, but, sometimes she liked having the company of none other, Pope Heyward, Heyward's son.
Nani and Pope have known each other since the fifth grade, even though Nani moved to OBX when she was eight, her education was on the Figure Eight side of the island. The Kahale family has been in the middle of the social-economic class, they fit perfectly in both worlds, even though the Kooks of Figure Eight would never accept them, and throw them without thinking into the Cut, turning them as Pogues. Haunani didn't care about the money very much, she didn't want to be a Kook, she did like buying things, she liked earning money, but she was smart on how to waste it.
Today was a day filled with work, the Hawaiian was busy unpacking up some fruits and vegetables, ordering them by their respective areas, checking that they didn't have any type of mold or bruises in the making, just like some times, she was alone at Heyward's shop, Pope had left a while back with the rest of their friends.
"Hey, do you work here?" A woman asked walking towards her and her hands filled with bags. "I am in need of some fruits but there's no one at the front, can you help me?"
"Of course, sorry bout that, I'm alone today." Nani apologized, setting the boxes aside to help the elder, Nani was careful and patient with her every moment she said instead of a strawberry, she would take a blueberry box.
"Thank you very much, you're a very nice girl." The elder smiled, taking her bags with her.
"Hi Mrs. Baxter, let me help you with those." The familiar voice of Pope was heard, the appearance of him walking through the doors made Haunani smile just for a moment before she could catch off her expression.
Mrs. Baxter thanked Pope for the help, indicating him where her car was located, Nani just stared at the scene, she could feel her cheeks heating up, the beats of her heart going rhythmically. Nani couldn't lie that she had been head over heels for Pope, it had been a crush since the end of ninth grade, and since then she'd been nervous around him.
But as Pogues, they had a very specific rule, and it had been made when JJ Maybank decided that during high school he would flirt with Nani, just for something fun, but, John B wasn't planning on anything real happening, so, the No Pogue on Pogue macking rule was created, and all dreams for Nani faded, knowing that she couldn't open her feelings towards Pope.
"Hey, Nani." JJ tapped her shoulder a few times, the brunette turned around with widened eyes. "Oops sorry, didn't meant to pull you out off your daydreams." JJ chuckled and waved in front of her a pack of marshmallows. "Think you can cash me this?"
Nani shook her head at him, walking over behind the counter. "You know JJ, you know how to get under someone's skin, and it's really irritating." Nani added, passing the product before throwing it at him. "Say a word and I'll cut you."
"I won't say anything Nan, I haven't said a word the past year or so." With a wink, JJ walked away, his smirk vanishing when he passed by Pope.
"Hey Nani, we are going to the Boneyard tonight, you better come around this time." Pope leaned over to the counter, Nani looked down at him watching his smile. "You can't say no, you have already missed three parties and people are asking about you."
"People are asking about me? That's weird." Nani chuckled, she didn't really have more friends outside them.
"Yeah, you know Lucas," Lucas, a competitive surfer who had trained with Nani months back. "Well, he wants a rematch, he said that you cheated, I defended you, and said that you're so much better than him, but I need you there to actually show him."
"That's nice Pope, you've defended my honor." Nani put her hand on her chest. "I'll try to go tonight, but you'll have to close up, I need to leave early."
"You got it Cap, I'll close up." Pope motion the ay ay captain, straightening his posture. "But, you better be there Nani, or I won't be defending your surfer honor." Pope went at front to start his work, as for Nani, she tried to finish up the area of fruits and vegetables.
Throwing the cardboard boxes at the back with the rest, Nani had finished her responsibilities, she did a double check around the store to make sure she didn't miss a thing.
"Well, I'm leaving Pope, I'll see you tonight." Nani waved at him. Leaving the shop, Nani hopped on her bike, heading back home.
Outer Banks was nice, she liked living here, she didn't mind being on the Cut side of the island, even though her father would've love living at the rich side, just because he liked the big houses and patios. But work was closer to the Kahale family, and so, they have decided to get a house, not too big but not to small, if we could describe it, it could be a middle class house from California. Nani loved her home, she didn't need more, she didn't want more, except maybe a better place to put her surfboards that didn't get in the way of anyone.
Securing her bike outside her front steps, the brunette took two steps at a time as she entered her home, the strong smell of rice made Nani Kahale smile, she rushed towards the kitchen, noticing her mother making her favorite dish.
"Are we celebrating something today?" Nani asked leaning on the kitchen island.
"Not really, I am just making dinner, nothing to celebrate at all." Nani's mother, Okelani pushed gently towards her a flyer. Nani read the big letters.
World Qualifying Series
Nani looked up to her mother, she didn't understand how did they get it, she glanced back down, reading that tryouts were being held next month.
"Wait, so you're telling me that I'm going to tryout for this?" Her voice went a little high as she asked, her mother nodded her head, opening her arms hugging her daughter as she giggled.
"We are able to get the money and get pay for it, you're going to tryout for it." Okelani explained, she could feel the emotional tears. "You're going and I can't believe it, you're getting into that competition, you're going to win and be the best surfer from Outer Banks, and then you're going to start doing more national competitions." Her mother placed her hands on Nani's shoulders, looking down at her with a huge smile.
Nani couldn't believe it, she had amazing news she could share with her friends, she knew they would be so excited, and now, she had something to shove at Lucas' face tonight.
Her afternoon was filled with excitement for Haunani, she couldn't t wait another second, so the moment her clock showed nine pm time, she rushed out of her home in her bike, getting to her new destination, the Boneyard. It was filled by every people from the island, Kooks and Pogues socializing with tourists as well, the only place people could have fun and not give a damn about social classes, or at least for a moment before people got too drunk.
"Hey, have you seen Pope?" Nani asked at the group of Pogues she recognized near the bonfire, two of them pointing near the drinking area. "Thanks." She walked away, seeing Pope talking to a ginger, someone she didn't recognize, a tourist.
"So that's why Obi-Wan is superior from the Star Wars movies." Pope said happily at the girl, but her face seemed confused.
"What is a Star Wars?" She asked tilting her head at Pope, Nani covered her mouth, not letting her laugh being heard. Pope just smiled at her and walked away, his eyes falling on the sight of the brunette.
"You came, finally came." Pope wrapped his arm around her shoulder, walking with her away from the group of tourists. "So, Lucas isn't here but, that doesn't matter, we need to take you to the group."
"I agree, cause I got news, big news." Nani responded. The pair headed near the logs at another bonfire happening, John B, JJ, and Kiara were taking drinks while they talked to some other friends, some of them knew Nani, but, they weren't close enough to even call acquaintances.
"Hey, look who made it tonight." John B screamed out, lifting his beer at her. A few applauses and cheers were thrown around.
"We needed our greatest surfer here, we were talking about how skateboarding isn't the same as surfing." JJ said looking up at Nani, she just rolled her eyes and sat down at an open spot in the log beside the blond.
"Wait, before Nani answers that weird question, she said she has big news to share." Pope interrupted, his hands opened at her, making all eyes turn to her, impatient now to know what it was.
"I am trying out for the World Qualifying Series." The group shouted, some even squealed, hands were clapped just like hugs were giving to Nani, congratulating her for the big moment.
"We need to celebrate this." Kiara grabbed another can of beer, throwing some around, as for Nani, she grabbed and alcohol free drink.
"Can't believe that this is happening, this is huge for you Nani, you deserve it so much." Pope said, his arms wrapped around her waist. "Congrats, really."
"Thank you Pope, that means a lot to me." Nani was thankful that she had been near the bonfire, Pope wouldn't be able to notice the blush forming on her cheeks. She only wished their hug would've lasted a little big longer.
Their night went by with excitement, congratulations for Nani and her dream coming true from those who knew her. And curiously there were no signs of Lucas anywhere, for a moment Nani felt annoyed because she wasn't given the opportunity to share her news with him and just rub it on his face. But outside of it, she couldn't believe that slowly, her dreams were coming true.
