Chapter 8
(Y/N) could have sworn she'd seen someone standing at the end of her street. She could have sworn she saw a flash of orange, as if the sun had shone off something; yet there was nothing of the orange colour in the woods. She had heard a soft bang from behind the sign, could have sworn she saw a pair of legs standing behind it, but her brother's voice snapped her from her trance.
"Dammit (Y/N), I said go inside." He said, tears were running down his cheeks, but he tried to look calm.
The girl nodded at him, not wanting to upset him further, she headed inside. She couldn't stop thinking about what had happened. She had just been in her room with Harry, in tears because her father had slapped her. He had left, he said he was going for a drive, and then there was a loud boom. (Y/N) could feel the heat from her room, she thought the house was on fire.
But then when she saw her mother and brother head outside, and well, she obviously had to follow. That's where she saw the car alight like a sinner in church, and the scorched, screaming body that thrashed before slowly falling silent. That was her father.
(Y/N)'s mother started wailing almost instantly, dropping to her knees next to her, and Ethan tried to get closer, but the heat was too much. The girl just stared; her hands covered her mouth; she couldn't believe her eyes.
How could this have happened; was this instant karma? Was this his punishment for laying a hand on her? Did the universe really have it out for him to the point it murdered him for harming her? A smile started to spread under her fingers. After all the horrible things he had said and done, he finally met his fate for it.
The girl started to giggle to herself; now she'll never have to worry about his ridicule again. Now she'd never have to listen to his words, never have to be degraded, talked down to, treated like shit. Now, she was free. And that made her ecstatic. The girl had broken out into laughter, covering her mouth still to try and stifle it, but knowing she had failed.
The next few minutes had been a blur to her. A neighbour came over and gave her a hug, comforting her until she stopped laughing. She heard her mother call her crazy, but the neighbour explained she was probably in shock and people react differently.
Ethan had come to her side and given her a hug, asked if she was okay. But (Y/N) was zoned out, staring into the flames of the car. Was she crazy for laughing? Or was her neighbour right? Whether she mourned her father or not, she couldn't deny being in shock. It had all happened so quickly. She had to keep in mind that her family clearly weren't aware that her father had hit her, so they probably wouldn't understand her happiness, if that's what she felt, and decided to agree mentally with the neighbour, glad someone was studying psychology and thus giving her a way out.
That's when she had seen the orange glare from the forest, the legs behind the sign. Ethan had sent her inside and now she stood in the kitchen, grabbing a drink of water for her dry throat. What an evening; it felt like an eternity had passed. (Y/N) sighed to herself as she looked out the window, and there it was again. An orange glare in the trees.
The girl squinted, trying to see what it was, before it disappeared behind a tree trunk. She almost dropped her glass. It moved. It moved. That meant someone was out there. But who the hell would be out there with all of the drama happening?
The fire brigade finally arrived, their siren blaring outside. Maybe it was a trick of the light, the police or brigade lights flashing off the trees or something. Yeah, as if.
Voices could be heard outside, one of the firemen had started talking to Ethan, asking him questions like if he knew what had happened, who was in the car, the type of car, it's age, the works.
Ethan's answers become mumble as (Y/N) stared out the window. Any sound became white noise to her as she started to wonder; had someone been watching the fiasco from afar? If so, why didn't they come help, why have they run off? Thoughts spun through the girl's mind, and she started thinking about Slenderman and his Proxies again.
But that couldn't be possible... Could it?
"Sir, do you think anyone was out to get your father?" A police officer had now joined the conversation outside, "This doesn't seem like an accident, we believe your father was murdered."
Murdered.
It had to be. There was no way this couldn't have been an accident. And to think her laptop had only just been smashed, a sign was left, and now her father was dead. Had one of the Proxies been watching them? Why did they kill her father? Did they see what happened? No, the Proxies are meant to have no sympathy, Slenderman wouldn't have cared, he wouldn't allow for them to kill her father because of a measly slap.
...Right...?
(Y/N)'s eyes widened and the glass she held slipped from her fingers. It shattered on the counter and she rushed to her room, pulling open the broken laptop that sat on the floor. The keyboard letters were still glowing, but the screen was busted. Dammit. She huffed and pulled her phone from her pocket and typing into the internet.
"Orange... Proxy... Orange... Goggles!" She exclaimed, clicking on a picture of a teenage man, he had to be at least 18, wearing jeans and a brown striped hoodie with a blue hood, and orange goggles. That must have been the reflection from the forest!
It was Toby. Toby had killed her father. The girl hit the phone lightly against her forehead; why hadn't she realised it sooner?
And why had he done it?
(Y/N) had read about his past, about how he killed his father and disappeared. His poor mother was going crazy, telling everyone she had seen him on television but... He hadn't been seen since he lit his house on fire.
Lit his house on fire...
"Oh my God..." The girl muttered, "Toby killed my father."
Another smile appeared on her face, and she hit the bed with excitement, "They do exist! The Proxies and Slenderman... They do!"
Harry walked over, barking and tail wagging as if excited, and the girl hugged the fluffy dog close. She kissed his head, and he tried to lick her face, clearly happy that she was so happy.
But then two shadow appeared in her doorway, towering over her. (Y/N) turned to see her mother and Ethan standing in the doorway, both a distraught mess. Her brother had his hands in his pockets, not looking into the room, but her mother had a look of rage.
"(Y/N)..." Her mother said, almost coldly, "Why are you smiling? Is this still that shock thing?"
"U-Uh... Yeah..." The girl said, putting her phone on the ground, "Yeah... Sorry mum..."
The mother let out a sigh, rubbing her head, "It's alright, the neighbour explained it all to me. I just..."
"The police and firemen just left." Ethan piped up, "They've taken the car and... Dad..."
"Alright, what happens now?"
"Well... They think it was a murder, so they're taking the car and they're going to try and figure out why it caught alight." The girl's mother sighed, before she lowered her eyes to the floor and spotted the busted laptop, "(Y/N)... What happened to your laptop...?"
"Oh, I have no idea." The girl said, glancing at it, "I went to wash up, came back and it was totally smashed."
"Did your father see that?"
"Yeah, and he was pretty mad."
The mother was silent, staring at (Y/N) with a dead look in her (e/c) eyes, "You know he brought you that laptop right...?"
"Yeah? And I didn't break it."
"Who did then?" A hand on the hip and the girl knew she was about to be lectured for it.
"I don't know mum, but I tried explaining it to dad and he didn't believe me either." She sighed, leaning her head back against the bed, "I'd really rather not talk about it now."
"And why not? You know your father is dead now right?!" Her mother raised her voice, and (Y/N) flinched slightly, staring up at her.
"Why are you mad at me? I didn't do anything to cause that."
"It's because he was mad that he went for a drive, and because he went for a drive that the car exploded!" Her mother yelled, tears falling down her cheeks once again. Even Ethan was looking at her sceptically.
"So what, you're blaming me?!" (Y/N) asked, her voice also starting to raise, "You know he hit me right? Slapped me right across the face for something I didn't do."
"Hit you?! He'd never do such a thing!" The older woman yelled, "I can't believe you'd lie like this, especially after what just happened!"
"I'm sorry he decided to go for a drive, but his death isn't my fault you know!" The younger girl shouted, "Are you really saying I'm at fault for this? How could you? You're my own mother, you should be making sure I'm alright after what just happened!"
"You seem to be perfectly fine there on your phone, smiling like it's the best day of your life." The mother huffed, "I can't believe you..."
And she walked away, leaving her daughter with a warm feeling of rage in her chest, and her son with a look of bewilderment in his eyes. He turned to his sister, tilting his head at her in silent question.
"Don't worry about her (Y/N)... I think she's just a little overwhelmed... I'm sure she'll come apologise once she cools down." He then walked into the room, "Let me help you with the laptop, someone could get hurt with all these sharp pieces laying around."
"Bit late for that." The girl huffed, "Already cut my finger but... Thank you."
The two siblings got to work with the laptop, picking up any broken pieces of plastic. It was silent for a while, but once the piece of technology had been thrown away, they sat in (Y/N)'s room to chill and... Go over everything that had happened.
"So... You really didn't break your laptop?" Ethan finally asked, leaning an arm on his knee.
"No, why would I? I was using it for my research."
"Oh yeah... Right... That wouldn't make sense then..." He sighed, "The cops say it could have been a murder, and whoever did it probably broke your laptop too."
(Y/N) couldn't help but feel nervous. She was certain Toby had broken her laptop, and double certain he had killed her father, but to hear it from someone else... Well she was relieved, but she didn't want to out the Proxies and Slenderman, not after they helped her.
She glanced at her older brother, offering a smile,
"You look like a mess, you should go clean up."
He chuckled, nodding and getting to his feet. Once he was in the doorway, he glanced back at her, "It was just... Bad timing sis... I'm sure she'll get over it."
Knowing he was talking about their mother, (Y/N) nodded in agreement.
"I sure hope so..."
