Chapter 20

Toby was dazed, confused as to what had just happened; one moment he was fighting Slenderman to the death, the next he had heard (Y/N)'s voice, her cry of worry as she called his name, him being pushed, the sound of something being hit... His eyes widened in horror as he sat up, turning around to the scene behind him.

There was a car behind him, the driver having gotten out and ran in front of the vehicle. Toby couldn't see his girl anywhere. He got to his feet, running over to where the driver had gone. He froze when he saw (Y/N) laying sprawled on the road, motionless, unconscious. There was a large gash on her forehead and a graze down her arm. Her shirt had ripped slightly, showing another deep cut in her side, glass surrounded her.

-No. Not again. Please not again-

Toby couldn't move, he just stared at the girl on the road, flashbacks to the crash with his sister flying through his mind. His breathing grew heavy, he dropped his hatchets and ran over to the girl; kneeling beside her. He went to scoop her up, but was grabbed from behind.

He swung his fist on instinct, punching the driver in the jaw. The guy stumbled back, holding his face with a cry of pain. Toby growled and picked up one of the hatchets, walking towards the driver, who sees his weapon and holds his hands up in defence,

"I-I tried to slow down!" The guy instantly jumped into excuses, "I saw you two on the road, I honked my horn, you didn't move! I didn't mean to hit her!"

He reached into his pocket, "We can call the hospital, I'll pay for the medical fees, please just don't press charges!"

Toby towered over him, glaring at the stranger that begged for his life. Seeing the fear in his eyes. But as he stared at the guy, he relaxed, dropping his hatchet again. Now wasn't the time for murdering, now was the time for saving.

He huffed, before turning back and running back to (Y/N)'s side. He checked her pulse, pressed his head to her chest. A heartbeat. He relaxed. Toby instantly got to work, he ripped the end of the shirt he was wearing and wrapped it around the girl's head, before ripping it more and wrapping it around her arm, her side, to try and stop the bleeding.

"I... I'll call the ambulance." The guy said, before the sound of something shattering came from the guy, "H-Holy shit! M-Monster!"

Toby felt his presence instantly, Slenderman was now standing behind him, looming over the boy and girl. The driver was petrified, frozen at first, before his senses came to him and he took off running down the street. It was mere seconds before the sound of ripping flesh filled Toby's ears, the guy's running stopping instantly, a strangled gasp that turned to a gurgle and then silence.

The boy tried to ignore it, tried to focus on (Y/N) and getting her to wake up. He lifted her head slightly, calling her name, asking her if she could hear him, to move her hands, do anything to show she was alright. But she didn't respond, it was as if she was in a deep sleep, like she couldn't be woken up.

"Enough is enough Tobias." Slenderman growled, his shadow seemed to stretch over (Y/N)'s body, and Toby growled, grabbing onto the hatchet he left at the girl's side, "It's time for me to end this nonsense."

Toby saw it in the back of his mind first, the tendril that was poised in the air, and then he saw Slenderman's shadow as the slimy black limb shot down towards her body. He yelled, jumping forward and standing in the way, the tentacle piercing through his left shoulder.

The male could feel liquid start to run down his back, his side. His body shook as he stood over (Y/N), using himself as a shield to keep her safe. His boss only growled, ceasing all attacks,

"This is silly Toby, step aside now." He growled, hanging his arms in front of his body, "To think you would risk your life for a nobody girl like her..."

"Sh-She's... Not a n-n-nobody..." Toby stated, unmoving from his spot, "H-Her name is (Y/N)... And she's my friend."

"Is she? Because I've gotten different messages from you." The taller being said, leaning down to his Proxy, "Why must you succumb to human instinct? I thought I had eradicated any possibility of that being a problem. Why can't you just be loyal to me? Why must you disobey?"

Toby looked up at him, all he could do was shrug, with one shoulder that is. He had no clue, it wasn't like he had a choice in the matter. Human instinct doesn't allow you to choose who you like, who you care for, who you'd die for. And it was clearly proven tonight that he'd die to protect (Y/N), even from the boss he was meant to pledge full loyalty to.

Slenderman growled, reading his mind. He stood straight, crossing his lengthy arms over his chest,

"You're being silly. You're a Proxy, you don't feel those things, you don't feel anything. Especially love."

"L-L-Laughing Jack di-iid..." Toby said, tilting his head, "Wh-Why can't I?"

He was deathly aware of the time that ticked by as they talked, the dead body not far from them, the abandoned car, and the unconscious, probably in critical danger (Y/N) he stood over. Yet Slenderman stayed where he was, risking his existence being known to scold his worker.

The taller man pinched the skin between where his eyes would be if he had any, and he shook his head, "Because you belong to me. You're my Proxy. You gave up your freedom to work for me."

"A-A-And so could (Y/N)." Toby stated. He glanced back at the girl, wanting nothing more than to just scoop her up and run off. But he could physically feel the pressure of his ankle throbbing by this point, and his shoulder wasn't far off. He was starting to get dizzy, and not from Slenderman's mind power, but from the loss of blood.

"Sh-She..." He closed his eyes, turning back to his boss, "Shee... Would be a-a good asssse-asset to you."

"I highly doubt that." Slender scoffed, "She's useless, she can't even stand up for herself against her family. You had to do it for her once."

"A-A-Alright..." Toby scratched at his mask, "Th-Then consider... I wou-would be more llloyal t-t-to you if youuu respe-spected my wishes. An-And I could be loy-loyal to both of you."

He kept his head held high as Slender pondered this. It was true, Proxies were bound to each other in a way that they are to protect each other. It was one of the rules of becoming a Proxy, if you weren't a team player in the long-run, you wouldn't cope very well as Slenderman's Proxy.

In that sense, Toby had been lucky; Slenderman would always keep him to his own tasks, only helping or needing help occasionally. But (Y/N) was someone he wouldn't mind having help from. She was kind to him, she treated him like a person.

"It would b-be easier th-tha-an killing her." The boy noted, "A-And if youuu did kill her... I w-would fore-ever hate you... I-I would d-o anything I could to hurt you... To g-get away... Plus you-you've ssseen me grieve before..."

"She'll have to prove herself first." Slenderman said, his tendrils pulling away from Toby, "As all Proxies do."

"Sh-She'll be able to." Toby nodded, clenching a hatchet in one hand, "Bu-ut we n-n-need to saave her now."

Slenderman considered once again for a moment, before nodding to himself. He was clearly weighing the pros and cons in his mind. Toby knew it wasn't ideal, he knew it was a big ask of his boss, and a high expectation for (Y/N), but it was all he could think of doing to save her. And he knew he'd be with her through it all.

Finally, his boss fully retreated his tentacles, all bar the one in Toby's shoulder. He folded his hands behind his back, giving a final nod,

"I do suppose you losing another loved one would cause problems. I'm sure you wouldn't appreciate losing another life to a car incident."

The boy was ecstatic. He had managed to get through to his boss, one of the most stubborn creatures on planet Earth. Slenderman huffed, mentally rolling eyes at his Proxy. The message in that mental image was something along the lines of 'don't push your luck' and Toby apologised, before turning back to (Y/N).

"W-We need to get her t-t-to D-Doctor Smiley now." He said, kneeling down and sliding his arms under her body. She was light when he lifted her, he propped her against his good shoulder, turning to his boss.

"And you will need medical attention as well." Slenderman nodded, "Really, what you did was foolish, and I could have killed you."

"Th-That's the point." Toby huffed, feeling (Y/N)'s light breath hitting his neck, relief flooding him in knowing she was still alive, "N-Now teleport us."

"Excuse you. I'm the boss here." Slenderman said, and the three disappeared from the streets, Slender having grabbed the dead body with a spare tendril, "I'll do as I please. Now hurry up and get her to Doctor Smiley."

Toby nodded, and with the last ounce energy he had, bounded through the mansion, holding (Y/N) close to his chest.

-Hold on (Y/N), everything will be alright now-

Ahhhh sorry, this felt really anti-climactic ;-; too much dialogue but like, I planned it I guess so I got no one to blame but myself XD

Despite having been literally mostly talking though, I hope you enjoyed this chapter! I admit, this is my third chapter written in a day, and I'm usually burnt out after two, so this is like, a new record!

Now to work on uni assignments-
