Chapter 16
Two weeks passed and Toby still didn't know what had happened with (Y/N) when she came into her room crying. But over the past two weeks, he had come to multiple realisations: he cared about the girl and had taken her words of wanting to leave seriously, he knew when he went home he'd have something to do and he wasn't sure if he'd be able to do it, and his host's brother had started smoking weed.
Toby hadn't realised it at first, it was merely a comment by Slenderman, but not long after the man started to smell the strange drug coming from somewhere inside the house. He wasn't sure if (Y/N) had picked up on it yet, but he wasn't even sure if she knew what it was.
Living in a mansion full of psychotic criminals and drug addicts sort of adapted you to the knowledge of the smells. Thankfully, Slender was able to deflect the effects from Toby's mind, as much as he had no clue how, his boss never really disclosed it with him. Toby wasn't sure if it was something he should mention to (Y/N), knowing she cared a bunch about her brother, and had only joked about it recently.
But right now, the two were sitting in her room, as Toby had been since he arrived. The boy found himself staring out the window, his mind wandering, changing from the problems of the household to the problems of his own home. Problems with... His orders.
Knowing what Slenderman had ordered him to do, knowing what he was going to have to accomplish when he left this house and returned home. Knowing he has to prove himself to Slenderman once again that his loyalty is 100% devoted to his boss. For most of Slender's Proxies, they prove their worth once, there is no do-overs, so why was Toby a special case?
The male rubbed his masked chin in thought, already aware as to why. He was the only one to ever go back on his loyalty, Slenderman had never had a Proxy who challenged him, who disobeyed him for another. Toby had... Never even considered it to be possible. And yet here he was, sitting in a room with a girl, dreading the impending job he is to undertake.
To murder her... Just to prove himself to Slenderman. What would happen if he didn't? There was no doubt his boss would kill (Y/N) automatically; but what would happen to Toby? Would he be killed to? Punished? Would things just go back to normal? The boy doubted.
"Alright, time to check your ankle." (Y/N) said, now done with checking her phone. She placed the device down and walked over to the other, the boy now on high alert, "Hopefully my quick Google search will help us out."
-Hopefully not...- Toby couldn't help but think. He wished he could tell what the state of his ankle was, he wished he could tell just how soon it would be, before he watched the light fade from (Y/N)'s eyes...
No. The boy shook his head, his breathing grew erratic and his ticking worsened. The girl looked at him, kneeling beside the bed,
"Are you okay? Do you want to do it yourself?" She asked, hoping she wasn't upsetting him.
"N-No... I-I ca-a-an't feeel..." Toby muttered, taking a deep breath to try and calm himself, "G-G-G0 ahead..."
The girl tilted her head, before nodding and pulling his jeans up over his leg. The fabric felt thick and dirty in her fingers, and the girl shuddered slightly in disgust,
"You really need a bath... And so do your clothes." She said, gently feeling around his ankle and foot, "The swelling seems to have gone down... Can you move your foot?"
Toby gulped, wiggling his toes. He felt nothing, no pain, no strain, his foot felt... Fine...
"Good, now lets see if you can stand." She gave him a smile, "Who knows, you could be homebound tonight."
The male blinked, God he hoped not. And he hoped Slenderman wasn't in his mind right now. But he also saw something flash through (Y/N)'s eyes at her words. For a moment, she looked almost sad at the thought of him leaving, and he wondered if she had caught on.
"I'm sure you're homesick." The girl then said next, "I don't know what anything is like for you, you must miss... Whatever home is like."
Toby tilted his head at her, shrugging lightly, "I-It's nothing to mi-miss..."
"I'm sure it's better than being stuck in here." She said.
"The room?"
"The house."
He shrugged again, "It's not bad, it's peaceful."
The girl gave a small smile, pulling the leg of his jeans back down. But she stared at the fabric, her eyes darkened. She hadn't said a word of what had happened between her mother and herself, she wasn't sure if it was any of Toby's business, how he'd react. It seemed silly considering he killed her father for doing the same thing, but she had struggled with telling Toby about her mother.
He noticed her sudden change in mood and sat up, touching her shoulder lightly. Her head snapped to attention and he tilted his head. She found herself staring at his mask, wondering why he never took it off, even in his sleep. She'd seen him sleeping with it on multiple times, and she wondered if it was at all comfortable. It had to be for him to never take it off, but wouldn't the air get stale?
He had to be hiding something, but she didn't want to force it out of him. The girl realised she hadn't asked him to remove it since Toby had first arrived, and any questions she had asked about it, the man had deflected. It hadn't really bothered her, she respected his want for secrecy, but staring at him now, seeing the bloodstains seeped into the mask, the wide grin it gave off, she couldn't help but swallow a lump in her throat.
Was that why she hadn't told him? Because he wouldn't tell her? Had she kept this secret from Toby merely because he kept secrets from her?
(Y/N) lowered her head, (h/c) hair falling in her eyes. He didn't need to know but... He had comforted her that night, it was something she thought about since it happened. He deserved to know.
"My mother hit me." She said, and Toby blinked in surprise. Was that what had happened two weeks ago?
"Sh-She what?" The boy asked, moving his good leg to the edge of the bed.
"She slapped me, across the face..." (Y/N) said, raising her shining gaze to meet his chocolate brown eyes, "I... Didn't want to say..."
"Wh-Why not...?"
"I don't know..." The girl sighed, lowering her head again, "I just... It's... It was strange, she had never hit me before. You weren't really sharing anything, you had so many secrets and I've told you basically everything about me..."
"O-Oh... Soo... Why t-tell me now?"
"I don't know, I guess I can't keep things from you, not forever anyway." The girl looked at him, giving a weak smile. She rubbed the back of her neck, "And... You looked after me when it happened... I didn't want to tell you then because I was still in shock."
"I-I get it..." Toby said, but his hands clenched at the bedsheets. His chest was full of warm rage, to think her mother had laid a finger on her... He shifted forward, "H-How ma-any times...?"
"Just the one. I haven't really spoken to her or... Seen her since." She rubbed her arm and Toby growled, moving his injured leg over the side of the bed. Pushing himself up, the boy wobbled but steadied himself and stepped forward.
Only for his leg to give way.
(Y/N) caught him, wrapping his arm over her shoulder, "Don't bother going after her. You're injured and she isn't worth your time."
She grunted as she sat Toby back down, the boy's twitching had become more frequent. He was clearly upset, and the girl couldn't help but feel terrible for keeping it from him,
"I'm sorry for not telling you sooner... I wasn't sure what to do." She said, waiting for something to happen. Toby closed his eyes, his head twitching to the side,
"Sh-She has-has no r-r-riiight..."
"I know, but I don't think my brother could handle another death in the family." She said, kneeling in front of him, "Thank you for wanting to stand up for me, but my mother has kept her distance since, I'm happy with that for now."
He huffed, but relaxed and let out a sigh, he took his mind off the news by thinking about the fact that his ankle was in fact, not healed. Relief washed over him and he was calm. Slowly, he pulled (Y/N) into a hug, and she couldn't help but hug back tightly. Feeling his comfort once again, she wondered why she didn't tell him sooner.
But oh boy did he stink.
The girl pulled back, giving a light chuckle as she awkwardly pet his arm. He gave her a confused look, his brown locks falling in front of his eyes, his genuine confusion adorable.
"I know you have your reasons, but please take a bath today." She said, "I know my mum is out, she left early this morning, and Ethan only leaves his room for food and the bathroom. I know he went recently so you should have plenty of time to wash yourself."
"I-I don't..."
"No arguing. You stink, and that's my bed you're laying in." The girl said, standing and helping him to his feet again, "I'll wash your clothes while you clean up, you look like my brother's size anyway. I'm sure he won't miss any shirts and jeans."
"A-Alright..." The boy sighed, leaning on (Y/N), "B-But I'm g-g-gonna need a t-towel."
"That can be arranged." (Y/N) giggled and helped him out of the room. They cautiously snuck into the bathroom, both keeping an eye out for anyone that could see them. If they saw Toby with (Y/N)... Well who knows what either of her family members will say, but considering his attire and unknown presence, they probably won't be happy.
But the two shuffling didn't catch anyone's attention, and they made it to the bathroom safely. Once they were inside, the girl immediately started showing Toby where everything was, from soaps to shampoo and conditioner. She said she would also get him a scrubber and face washer in case he wanted to use them.
Once he was familiar with everything, she turned the bath on and tested it's heat. Toby reminded her that he couldn't really feel the heat and she waved her hand, saying the steam will help, while also making sure the water wouldn't boil his flesh. The water reached an appropriate temperature, and (Y/N) left to grab him a towel, telling him she'll knock when she comes back and to keep his leg out of the bathwater if he climbed in before she was back.
The door closed, and Toby looked around the pristine bathroom, taking in the white and blue tiles that lined the wall next to the bath, the white tiles on the floor below him, the slightly dust vanity, covered in make-up and other beauty products that he knew didn't belong to (Y/N). He limped over to the mirror that sat over the sink, taking in his appearance.
He was, in fact, filthy. The boy was almost shocked by how dirty his hoodie was, and he immediately took it off. Boy was he glad (Y/N) had convinced him to shower, he really did need it. He let out a sigh and pulled off the rest of his filthy clothes, setting them on the bathroom floor. He couldn't help but feel alien in the strange bathroom and decided to keep his boxers on.
But what was taking (Y/N) so long?
The girl had just finished grabbing a few things, one of her father's towels since he wouldn't be using it anymore, a washer and a scrubber. She was walking back to the bathroom when she remembered Toby would need clean clothes. So she snuck into the laundry, knowing her brother had recently done some washing. Fishing out some clothing, she wondered if he'd need any underwear, her cheeks turning red at the thought, before getting over it and grabbing a pair.
Once she was done with her free shopping of items, the girl turned to find her brother, Ethan, standing behind her. He was glaring down at her, his eyes strangely red and watery. He looked tired, and he smelt weird, his clothes looked burnt out and his hair was a mess. He stepped forward and (Y/N) stepped back, before making her way around him.
"Where do you think you're going with that?" He asked, grabbing her arm and the girl yelped in surprise, "That's dad's towel..."
"Sorry Ethan, I was just cleaning up the... The linen cupboard." She said, taking a sigh of relief that he didn't notice the clothes.
A look of distaste crossed his face and he reached for the towel. The girl stepped back again, raising a brow at her brother, why was he trying to take it from her, and why did he look so disgusted in her?
"You... Don't deserve to hold that... Not after... What happened..." He said in a low, strangely calm voice.
"What do you mean?" (Y/N) asked, surprised by the remark.
"Mum's been in to me about you and how you're the reason dad died..." He said, leaning against the wall, pressing his forehead on his arm, "I didn't want to believe it at first... But she continued on and on... And she has a point... I finally see it."
"You really think it's my fault our father died?" The girl asked, completely taken back, "You know I had nothing to do with it. He slapped me, he left the house, I was in my room in tears, you saw me."
"Of course it's your fault!" Her brother snapped, growling at her, "If you actually did as he said for once, if you didn't smash your stupid laptop, he wouldn't have gotten mad and left. He wouldn't have gotten in the car... He wouldn't have..." The boy stopped, rubbing his face, "If you weren't a useless waste of space, he would still be here..."
"Ethan..." The girl said, tears blurring her vision, "But what about the times you stood up for me? Doesn't that matter anymore...?"
The boy glared at her, "I was foolish, wasting my time. Mum is right, you're a fucking terrible sibling..."
The girl stared, wide-eyed at her brother. He'd never sworn at her before, never belittled her... What was happening to her family? Why was he acting this way?
She couldn't stand looking at him, the girl turned her back to him and rushed to the bathroom, throwing the door open and slamming it behind her.
