Chapter XIV
The sun was now high in the sky, but it didn't look like Geradlt was in any mood to go back to he boarding school. It would've been lunchtime, or at least near to it. I pulled out the folded timetable and looked at it, seeing that lunch-time was set at 14h00.
"What time is it?"
Geraldt looked over at me lazily, before asking Tris over again. He whispered in her ear and she checked her watch before responding. She went away just as quickly, hearing someone call her.
"It's nearly one, why?"
"I was just wondering if we needed to head back," I confessed. He chuckled softly, shaking his head. His arm snaked around my shoulders and held me close to him.
"We can go in a few minutes, but let's not end this day too early."
"You worried you might get into trouble?" I pressed. He pulled me close to his side, running his fingers across my temple gently.
"Yes and no, I just don't really wanna deal with the nurse yellin'. Y'know?"
I nodded. Quite honestly, the circumstances were enough for me to just laze about here but I didn't want to trouble my family more than I already had. He didn't let go of me though and I didn't want him to. It was the only semblance of peace I had, without the tablets. What sealed it was him humming a song. It was like a lullaby. When he noticed my head rocking, he snickered under his breath before letting me go.
I stared at him, and I whined mindlessly. I reddened when I realized how I had basically exposed myself but his laughter only grew laughter. He reached out and squeezed my cheek.
"Sorry, but let's get you back so you can sleep in the comfort of your own bed."
He nudged me out of the booth before sliding out himself, trying to avoid the legs of the table hitting his foot. After about a minute of him shuffling awkwardly, and glaring at me when I chuckled, he was out and back on me. Slowly, we moved out of the coffee shop with a final goodbye to Tris and an older lady who I assumed was Marnie.
He was the first to the bike, practically throwing himself at it but turning around.
"Don't be jealous of my baby," he said quietly. I raised my eyebrow at the absurdity and he only laughed, supporting himself haphazardly on the bike as he flung his leg over. He let out a hiss when his foot hit the side of the bike. That single sound was enough for me to rush to his side, much to our surprise.
I was holding his arm, looking at him panicked. He only smiled, those crooked teeth shining when he did so.
"Sorry, didn't mean to scare ya," he sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. He took the plastic bag and handed it to me.
"Mind holdin' this for me?" I nodded sulkily, taking the bag and getting on the bike behind me. This should be fun. I wrapped my arms around his waist, holding tighter than I did on the drive here. His body stiffened, but eventually slackened as he revved the bike into action. Tris came running out to open the gate for us and then we were off, driving back to the school as the sun began its slow trek down towards the horizon. I settled my face against the back of his neck to avoid the surge of air and this only made the air between us more tense and I was wondering when it would break one of us.
