Chapter 7

The cave was quiet. I sat on a rock as I looked across it. Everyone had set up beds from the sleeping bags the staff conjured up for us. But, I wasn't sure how any of them could sleep, especially Savannah. She watched her little sister get carried away and she hadn't even seen her parents since they left the house for date night.

I looked at my staff, the excitement running through my veins, wanting desperately to use it again. I had to wonder if this was how the first owner felt when she first used it. I shook my head. I should only use this thing when I needed to, nothing more.

I also had to remember that there were other high schools in this town, state, and county. We needed to stop Natas and with the billions of minions he had, we had to be prepared. Once everyone woke up, I'd have to see if Darien would help me set up patrols to look for any other survivors in this town, then we'd move around the rest of the world.

I won't fail you, Kine. I vowed, putting my hand on my chest. I'll bring Natas down, however way I can.

"A search patrol?" Darien asked skeptically.

"Yes," I responded, "if he didn't destroy the school, he might have left every school untouched. There might be more people out there who need our help."

Darien ran his fingers through his hair, thinking this plan over. Some people were listening in, but they seemed to have been waiting for Darien's thought on it.

"Alright," he finally spoke, "I'll let some people go out and look for others, you will go with them and help right?"

"Of course," I nodded, "until someone else finds something, this staff is the only thing that can get rid of those things... Then again, if there's a lone one walking around, praying can stop it."

"Praying?" Darien raised an eyebrow.

"It worked when we were attacked when this all started." Savannah pointed out, walking over to stand by my side.

With a sigh, Darien made his way to the ledge and climbed up so he could look down at everyone. "Hey, listen," he called out, catching everyone's attention, "we were just talking and we believe that if Natas had us imprisoned at our school he must have other students imprisoned in other schools."

Murmurs spread throughout the cave, thankfully I didn't hear a single argument. Though they all seemed very unsure.

"We need as many people as we can get if we want this guy brought down and find out where I parents went," Darien explained, "we're going to send a group out to go look for any other school that might be untouched."

"What if Natas is there?" someone called out. "After what that one girl did, he might have went to another school to make his weird hidin' place!"

I tightened my grip on my staff. I had a name, I wasn't some girl. I shook my head. This guy didn't know me, there was no reason to be upset that he didn't know my name. Most of the people didn't know my name.

"I know it's a risky move, but we can't just stay here and do absolutely nothing," Darien explained, "if there's any volunteers, please meet me and.... Um..." he looked down to me.

I signed. "Kylen."

"Kylan." he said.

"Len!" I shouted. "Ky-Len ,why is that so hard to- you know what, forget it." I stormed up the slope to the tunnel where the entrance was. Savannah close behind me.

I waited outside, keeping a look out for any of the demons or Men in Blue. Darien, Nick, Kay, and some muscular guys climbed out. I growled under my throat to see Savannah and I were the only girls. Were they all being prissy brats, or were the boys holding them back?

We were about to get a move on when we heard struggling coming from the hole. We looked back to see one of the kids from history class, Dustin.

"What are you doing?" Nick asked him.

"I don't wanna stay down there!" Dustin snapped. "It's too crowded an' there's nothing to do, going on some goose chase is the only excitement I'll get apparently."

I rolled my eyes, annoyed with his usual childlike attitude, especially in a situation like this.

We decided to head north after Kay found a rock with moss on it. I used the staff as a compass, by making one appear in the crystal. Darien led the way and only looked to me to see if the staff could pick up on anything. The only problem, I wasn't sure what the staff could and couldn't do. Thankfully, we didn't see any demons, Men in Blue, nor Natas.

It felt like we had walked five miles when we finally came to a broken road. Kay fell to his knees and began kissing the beautiful street. I didn't even care what street this was, I was just happy we found something close to civilization.

Kay continued kissing the road until he came to a torn body. He quickly shot up with a squeal and ran behind me. Savannah covered her mouth, gagging at the sight. The body looked female; her torso ripped open to reveal an bloody mess, but no organs. Her eyes wide and lifeless.

"It was those God damn Men in Blue!" I spat, trying not to barf.

Darien knelt down and shut the poor things eyes. "We... We should bury her..." he spoke solemnly. "No one deserves to be treated this way..."

"Except Natas." Savannah mumbled.

None of us spoke as I turned the staff in to a shovel and began digging, Darien, Kay, and Nick helping. Dustin and Savannah just watched, their hands together and heads down in respect. When we were done digging, Darien helped Kay carry the girl's body in and we closed the grave up.

After a moment of silence we went on with the search. I noticed a few remaining markets, though crushed, still standing. Nick and Dustin went to see if any would have any food, in case the staff somehow lost its power.

Stupid little humans. The raspy voice giggled in my head, this time with an Irish accent. This staff was made by both God and Lucifer, it'll never lose its power.

"Sh, Shut up," I whispered, hitting my head with my first.

"Are you okay?" Darien asked me.

"I... I'm fine," I lied, "just... Just hoping we're not too late saving the other survivors."

"Kylen!" I turned to see Nick and Dustin running toward us, followed by a few Men in Blue and demons.

I quickly turned the staff in to a rifle and tried to target the enemy. I wasn't sure how I aimed back at the school, but I couldn't let them reach the two boys. I pulled the trigger and one man toppled over, a demon tripping over him. I ran at them, turning the sword into a sword. The strange excitement made my heart pound against my chest. I felt a smile creep on my face. I didn't feel like me anymore. Someone else was calling the shots. It must of been the previous owner of the staff.

"You'd be wise to stay out of this, little lass!" The voice escaped my mouth as I stabbed the sword through one demon, making it explode in to dust. "Killin' be for the adults!"

I sliced down the shoulder of one of the men, blood spewing from his body. I then turned the staff into twin pistols, shooting two men and three demons.

"Let death be your salivation, bitches!" The voice screeched, laughing maniacally. "I am Bás Bringer!" I held a gun to the face of a man, who's lip was in a scowl and sweat running down his cheek. "The end is nigh, mother fucker!"

With a loud bang, I killed the last guy and the staff returned to its normal state. My eyes stopped burning and my legs collapsed under my weight. I looked back to see everyone was looking at me in surprise.

"Who's... Bás Bringer?" Savannah asked after they ran over to help me up.

"I... Don't know..." I admitted.

"Well, whoever she is, she saved our lives and that's enough to know she's on our side." Darien nodded.

"I'm not sure," I looked down, "she doesn't seem to like anybody... I think she killed just for the enjoyment of killing..."

They all looked at me in bewilderment. I couldn't blame them. They weren't the ones holding this staff.

I then looked around and noticed something wrong. "Where's Dustin?"

Everyone quickly began to look around. Darien shared a concerned look with two of the guys with us.

"He was right behind me, I swear!" Nick spoke first.

"Dustin!" I called out. "Hey!"

"try the staff!" one of the guys ordered me.

With angry growl, I looked at the staff and thought about what Dustin looked like. It twitched slightly before dragging me away. The others quickly followed closely behind until we were no more than a few yards away. Dustin's body lay on the ground, he looked just like the girl we buried.

I looked at him for a moment, my anger welling up inside me. "Shit." Darien looked at the others troubled while Savannah cringed in disgust.

"Come on... Let's bury him..." Darien sighed.

I turned the staff in to a shovel and began digging, starting to loose all feeling inside me. "I'm getting real tired of this..."

We buried Dustin and took another moment of silence. I tightened my grip on the staff, wondering what it was I had to do to stop all this. I was only one person. I looked up and wondered if any of these people were going to help like I do. Maybe Savannah will see the burning bush one day.

"So did you two find anything in that store?" I asked Nick, remembering he was with Dustin.

He took out two cans; one of soup and the other of noodles. "He had something too," he spoke sadly, "but I think those things took it when they were... Finishing him off..."

I sighed. It wasn't enough to feed all the students back at the place. I wasn't sure if there was a limit to how much the staff to give. If we ran out of food and the staff couldn't give anymore, we'd all starve.

"Alright," Darien sighed, running his hand through his hair, "let's keep going and..." he trailed off as he looked up at the sky. "Run... Run!" he cried out before backing away quickly.

I turned and saw Hell Buzzards flying full force toward us, teeth bared in a snarl and claws ready to kill. I swung the staff, letting out a high pressurized air blast at them, only hitting one and knocking it to the ground.

I shoved Savannah and began running with everyone else. I turned the staff into a gun and shot at the demons, only grazing one's shoulder. We ran as fast as we could, but the two guys stumbled and the buzzards got them. I gasped and tried to go back, but Kay grabbed my arm and we went on running. I had to block out the pained screams of the two guys as their limbs were being torn out and eaten.

"Quick!" Darien called out, jumping down a ditch with Nick. Savannah jumped down after, followed by me and Kay. We waited as the buzzards wings got louder and they buzzed past us, bringing a shadow across us as they went on to the distance.

Kay let out a relieved sigh, but I stayed tense when I heard the sound of footsteps coming toward us. I put my finger to my lip to indicate to everyone to be quiet. I slowly rose myself up as I turned the staff to a rifle. Savannah gently rose up to peak around the corner.

Immediately, I pounced out the hole and readied my gun as I landed in front of some boy, who put his hands in the air. His pale blue eyes wide in terror. I saw a familiar looking boy look from behind him and Savannah then reminded me who this guy was.

"Luke!" she cried out the name of her boyfriend and scrambled out the ditch.

"Savannah!" Luke pushed past the other kid and me and wrapped his arms around Savannah, spinning as he picked her up. "Oh, thank God you're alright!"

They enjoyed their reunion while I kept the gun on the blond guy Luke was with. Like asked Savannah to call me off, apparently saying this guy was fine and his name was Larry.

"Y-Yeah..." Larry stuttered, eyeing the gun and me. "I... I'm on your side.... R-really!"

I narrowed my eyes at him for a moment before lowering the rifle and turning the gun back. Both Luke and Larry jolted as I held the staff in my hand.

"How'd you do that?" Larry asked with awe in his voice.

"Fuck you, that's how!" I snapped. I didn't like this. Any of this. I wasn't sure how much of this I was going to take. Suddenly everyone was an enemy to me. I stormed away, putting my hand to my head. Whoever this Bás was, she was controlling me somehow. I didn't mean to snap at that one guy. She was like some puppeteer. I looked at the staff. It was probably because of this she was able to this and it was probably her thoughts running through my head. She was crazy. And she really enjoyed killing anything in front of her.
