Chapter 2
"T-The Rapture?" Savannah stuttered. "Kylen, that doesn't make any sense! If this is the Rapture then why are we still here? What about that jerk at the store? Why was he taken?" she grabbed my shoulders and looked me in the eyes. "My sister and Sicily were taken, why didn't I or Alex go with them?"
"I... I don't know..." I admitted. How could I possibly know? Both Savannah and Caroline did the same kind of religious practices. Was Savannah doing something wrong that Caroline wasn't? As for that guy.... Not all robbers could be bad right? He was probably just getting money for somebody else, or he had troubles that forced him to steal. "I really don't know... For some reason the sinful and the teens are still here. What I do know is that we need to get the hell away from here before those... Those things get us!"
I grabbed Savannah once more and began running away from her cul-de-sac. Everywhere I looked people were screaming and running as the balls of fire fell from the sky. It looked as if the lights weren't coming back, but every time I looked up, I saw the red and black clouds opening up, but a flying demon would block it. I heard no dogs barking nor cats yowling. This had to be the Rapture. Everywhere I looked I saw Hell!
As we neared the next street, a demon slammed down to the ground and glared at us with disfigured yellow eyes. It's yellow, crooked, teeth were bared in a snarl and it held its claws above its head. I quickly ran the other way and looked for a short cut to my neighborhood. A church was close by and hopefully that would keep them out.
A trail was hidden somewhere behind Sicily's house and my mom told me that it could lead to our backyard. Savannah never wanted to try it, in fear hunters or soldiers in practice would shoot her accidentally. I doubt anyone will be training during this.
I spotted it just between her house and a crushed neighbor's house. I dragged Savannah toward it and ran as fast as I could with my friend holding on to me. We skidded to a stop as a man in a camo suit fell from the bushes fighting with one of the demons. It clawed at him and bit at him as he held it back with his rifle. We stepped slowly around them and started running again, trying to ignore the painful screams coming from the man.
We continued running until we came to one neighborhood that looked just like the other ones. Houses were crushed and everything was on fire. I looked around frantically for a sign to tell me where we were and how far the church was from it. Shaking my head in frustration, I ran toward where the main road was. Savannah ran behind me, her breath heavy and footsteps fading.
I stopped, my legs on fire from all the exercise in one night, and went back to Savannah.
"We... Have to keep running..." I gasped to my friend.
"I... Can't..." Savannah breathed, her hands on her knees. "I... I'm not... Even sure... Of what's happening here..."
"Look, if.... If we can get to that church just down the road from this place... We might... Might be able to survive the night... And look for help in the morning..." I explained, trying to sound like I could keep going.
Still gasping for air and looking around at her surroundings, Savannah took a deep breath and nodded. We bolted down the street again, trying not to breath in too much, in fear the toxins of the flames got to our lungs. I looked up and quickly stopped, Savannah bumping in to me, as a huge ball of fire hit the earth before us. We ran around it, but a crack opened up and huge piece of Earth sprung out from the ground. It was like this for hours; dodging balls of fire and cracks in the ground, like the world was preventing us from getting to the church.
What was going on up in Heaven? Why were so many people going when others were still here? The sky kept opening, but the damn demons kept blocking the light from coming down. Some of us were clearly supposed to be taken, but the monsters were keeping the lights from taking us.
I almost cried when we came back to the main road. Sure, there were cracks and fissures in the black solid ground, but that just meant we were closer to resting our legs and regaining our energy. We ran down the road to the small church, luckily, still in tact.
Just as we were about to go inside, giant balls of fire hit the one story building. Both me and Savannah backed away with our eyes bugging out of their sockets.
"Now what?" Savannah shook.
"Saint Elizabeth!" I said the name of the church my family went to. "That's more of a church than this!"
With a deep breath, Savannah and I continued sprinting down the road, passing the flaming gas station. I stopped Savannah with my arm as I spotted one last gas machine still in place, but fire was coming toward it quickly. She shoved me over to what was left of the wooded area and we fell in to a ditch, covering our heads.
A loud boom sound was heard and I felt the wind breeze past us in fury. Once it subsided, we got up and continued running down the roads to my church. Cars passed us, but we could hear them crashing when their engines rang through our ears. I could hear the explosion following the crashing sounds and the heat of the flames.
People were scrambling all over the town, screaming and shooting at the demons. I could see some get carried away by the flying monsters, all struggling to escape their grasps.
I then saw a huge group of men wearing blue uniforms, their hats were covering their eyes, and they all marched in time together as one. Someone ran out in front of them and the first row of men snatched him. He screamed out demands to let him go, but the men circled around him and I could hear the agonizing screams of the man.
After a while the screaming ceased and the men went back in to formation, marching away from where they were. In their place was the man... His torso torn wide open, his innards gone, and eyes wide and dull.
I backed away, my stomach turning at the sight. I could hear Savannah gagging next to me.
"Come on!" I yelled. "We have to get away from here!"
We ran on through the burning and cataclysmic town. Houses getting scorched by balls of fire, fissures opening and sucking down cars, people, and other houses. The forests were on fire and trees plunged down to the Earth, hitting the unfortunate, who were close to the saplings.
I couldn't believe what I was seeing. This was my town, my home, and it was being destroyed right before my eyes. It wasn't the best place in the world, but it was my home. I was raised here all my life and now it was nothing but Beelzebub's playground.
As I kept running, a heavy force crashed in to me and a loud crushing noise was heard. Savannah let out a high-pitched squeal and I turned to see a giant steaming rock where I was at the time. I shakily got to my feet and saw someone was pinned under the thing by his thigh.
"Oh, my God!" I shrieked, running to his side. I touched the cobblestone, but immediately drew it away when my finger got burned. I got to my knees and tried looking for a way for helping the guy out from under the stupid thing.
"I can't feel my legs!" The man wailed painfully.
"Savannah, go find a pipe or a shovel!" I looked to my friend.
"Oh, God, run!" The man screeched. I turned to see another group of men in blue stomping toward us. "Run! Run! Run!"
"Come on!" Savannah clutched my arm and dragged me back to my feet. I looked back to see the man flailing his arms around as the men enclosed around him and the screaming began. I couldn't believe we left the poor guy behind to be ripped open by those guys.
After a while of running and dodging anything that could kill us, we reached the road that would lead us to the church. The stores were destroyed and the fast-food restaurant's were on fire. Demons laughed maniacally as they ate something on the roofs. I wished it was just beef, but I could've sworn I saw a hand in one of the sandwiches.
We snuck past them and zipped down the road. I became very pissed when I saw my high school was untouched. Why was everything else recked but the stupid school?
Continuing down the dangerous road, my church came in to view and my hopes were high. I saw some people pushing their way in to the building, glad it wasn't just going to be me and Savannah.
That's when my heart pounced up to my throat. Another huge lava ball came from the sky and landed straight on the church. People, who hadn't made it inside, fell to the ground, eyes wide in utter terror. I could hear the screams and agonizing wails of the people inside and too close to the building. I didn't have time to plug my ears, close my eyes, and pretend all this would go away, because an even bigger group of the blue men were stomping toward us.
Preparing ourselves to turn tail and run back the other way, Savannah and I turned to see more coming our way as well. I looked over and saw some kids from my school making their way quickly to the school, still unharmed. Ignoring the annoyed feeling in my guts, I grabbed Savannah and started running to the building. Some raced passed us while others stumbled behind.
The ground shook violently again, causing me and Savannah to stop so we could keep our balance. A hole began to open up in the middle of the grass in front of the school. It got bigger and began swallowing the people near it. Everyone started running around the hole, some falling in, and to the doors of the school which seemed to be unlocked somehow. I saw people get trampled and shoved out of the way in to the deepening hole.
We made our way around, but my ankle twisted and I fell to the ground. Savannah skidded to a stop and spun around.
"Go!" I told her, getting to my knees. "I'll be fine! Go!"
"Kylen!" Savannah cried out, starting to run my way, but the amount of people was too much and she was shoved in to the school.
I began to move my feet up, but the hole grew wider and I slid down. I quickly grabbed the side for dear life and looked over my shoulder to look down. It was boiling hot lava below me and people were falling in. Some had been able to climb out. I looked back up and tried to pull myself up to the ground again.
A student from my history class was hanging a good few feet from me. A girl fell in and my classmate cried out a name after her. He looked around then to me.
"You, I-I'm going to need y-you to listen to me alright!" he shouted over to me. "I'm... I'm g-going to reach over, l-listen to me, I'm going to reach o-over, and you're going to grab me, listen closely, you're going t-to grab me and swing me up, then I'll reach in and p-pull you out! Okay?" I nodded, though I wasn't really trustworthy of this ass hole. "Okay, okay, on three... One-"
He didn't get to finish because the side he was holding on to broke off and he fell in to the pit of lava. Trying to rid myself of that haunting sight, I pulled some more and kicked at the side until I was able to grab a hold of dead grass and yank my body up to the surface.
Crawling away from the hole as fast as I could I looked back to the main roads and saw the men in blue and demons looking at the school, unmoving. I looked back at the school to see it was the way it always was. Standing, I looked back at them and made my way to the doors, which seemed to have been tinted. Looking around to see there were no more people, I pulled opened the door and slipped inside, shutting it behind me.
