Chapter 13
The world around me was black again. I immediately shot up and saw my staff was gone again. I searched desperately for the little boy. My heart dropped in disappointment.
"Hello?" I called out. "Little boy?"
That's when another boy walked out from the darkness. He looked completely different from the one kid, but his eyes seemed to match. The same needing to hold him like the first child took me over. I got up and began walking toward him, but he ran off. I shot off after him, not wanting to loose this one like I did the other.
"Wait! Please, just tell me who you and that other boy are!" I cried after him. He then vanished and I dropped to my knees. "Come back... Please..."
I lowered my head sadly until I heard laughing come from no where. I looked around quickly, hoping the person would show themselves. Fire blasted from the ground and surrounded me. Everyone I knew and loved stood just outside the flames. I prayed at least one would try to help, but they all turned and walked away, leaving me by myself in the darkness and surrounded by flames. The laughing grew louder and louder. I put my hand to my head, trying to block out the laughter. I felt cold and alone, despite the laughter and flames.
I couldn't believe it. I thought the drug wore off before I left the school. But my worst nightmare was crowding my mind again. Everyone left me here. To face things like this. All by myself. I let out a scream as loud as I could, almost destroying my vocal chords.
"Kylen!" I opened my eyes to see Kabuto holding me up by my shoulders. Amoy, Savannah, Nick, Luke, Larry, and Kay were standing behind him, worry in their eyes. Mother Nature and Father Time were on the other side of the cave, looking on blankly.
My eyes weld up with tears. It was just a dream... It was just a dream... I kept telling myself.
"Please, tell me it's just a dream!" I wailed, burying my face in Kabuto's chest.
After a moment of me crying, I felt Kabuto put a hand on my head. "It... Was just a dream... It's okay..."
"Kylen?" I felt a hand touch my shoulder Aw I heard Savannah's voice. "What... Happened...?"
I didn't answer. I was too terrified at the memory. I just clutched Kabuto's shirt tightly and sobbed, not even trying to talk.
"I want everyone to leave the room," I heard Kabuto demand calmly, "right now, we need to solve this problem right now and don't want anyone stopping me."
"What are you going to do?" Savannah asked.
"None of your nosy little business, now go!" his voice boomed. Savannah hesitated a moment before taking her hand off my shoulder. I heard everyone's footsteps fade away and Kabuto shoved me away from him. "Enough! You're not just a simple little high school kid anymore! You have the staff and Trapario is beginning to become more real by the moment, you need to be stronger than this!"
"But... But... My friends... They..." I muttered, still shivering.
"They're not going to leave you," Kabuto assured a little nicer, "if they do, they're not really your friends and you need to put a little more faith in them."
I lowered my head, feeling horrible for thinking they'd turn their backs on me. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized nothing like this had ever happened to us. Mankind was a cruel thing. We all like to think the people we trust will always be there in the most drastic of times, but if it could harm them, they could...
I shook the thought away. I was no different and I knew this. I couldn't blame my friends if they left me to face Natas alone.
"Come on," Kabuto took me from my thoughts, "we're going to the surface. You need to control your powers. You can tell me about your dream while we're out there."
He held up his gloved hand snapped his fingers. We were suddenly outside near the entrance. I looked down at the staff and held it up. I hoped Bás would behave herself for this. I didn't want anything to give away our hideout.
"Okay," Kabuto cracked his neck, "first, I want you to make a protective barrier around us, so nothing can see us."
I blinked, unsure of how I was supposed to do that. When I made the explosive boomerang I just thought about it, same with the barrier I made after we found Luke and Larry. The same day Dustin and the other two guys were killed.
I held up the staff and thought hard as the staff began to vibrate and glow.
"Don't think too much about it," Kabuto told me, "just think the way you thought of Trapario."
I never really thought about how I made Trapario. There were many theories, but I never chose the right one.
I blinked and thought of the movie Under the Dome. The giant glass they put over the the city because of some... I never watched the movie, but I know it was something bad. I then thought of doing the same thing for the hideout, but a giant glass dome would probably give us away quickly. I imagined an invisible force field that was just big enough for training and hiding the door. It would so inauspicious nothing, but the survivors could get in. If we ran away from an attack we'd vanish in thin air before them, confusing the enemy.
"Kylen," I looked at Kabuto and blinked.
"What, did I screw up?" I asked.
Kabuto responded by picking up a rock and flinging it in the distance. It vaporized in the air and I almost dropped my staff.
"Well, we can't see them," Kabuto commented, "question is, can they see us? Fly put there and check."
"Fly?" I slumped my shoulders.
"You did it before." Kabuto pointed out.
"I did?" I didn't remember that.
"Oh, God, we have so much work to do..." Kabuto face palmed. "Just think about flying."
I looked down and thought about birds, clouds, the sky, and... I realized I wasn't touching the ground anymore. Excitement took me over and I flew around feeling more free than I was before all this. It was amazing! The wind in my hair, the world getting smaller beneath me, and the accomplishment of learning how to fly. I flew out the protective dome and looked back to see Kabuto and the door were gone. I spotted the rock that Kabuto had thrown. I thought for a moment and waved my staff in front of me and a light over came where the staff was. I then flew back inside to Kabuto.
"Well?" He asked. I picked up another rocks and threw it out the dome and when it hit the wall it appeared on the other side with the other rock. I then walked out once more and waved my staff before me and a demon appeared. It snarled and lashed its claws as it ran at me. I jumped back in to the dome and the demon vaporized with a painful shriek. I looked back at Kabuto. "Good. Now, drop down and give me twenty!"
"What!?" I jolted. I could barely do one right, how could I do twenty!? "Are you crazy!? Look at me, I'm not exactly the healthier child here!"
"Do you want to defeat Natas?!" Kabuto yelled. "To come control that staff you need to get stronger! Now, drop!"
I growled as I got on the ground and put my hand to the sides of my head. Taking a deep breath, I pushed myself from the dead grass, my muscles already tightening in pain. Kabuto walked over and pushed my stomach higher and shoved my feet back, straining me even more. My arms shook and I wasn't sure if I could find my strength to lower myself and push back up.
"What are you waiting for?" Kabuto shot. "I said twenty!"
With a sigh, I lowered my upper body with my arms, let my chest touch the ground and push back up, my arms shaking under my weight.
"I... I can't!" I let my arms give underneath me and I hit the ground.
"Stand up!" Kabuto shouted, grabbing me by the back collar of my shirt and yanking me up to my feet. "Put your arms up to your neck height!"
I slowly lifted my arms and stopped until they were at the height he told me to.
"Stay like that until I come back!" Kabuto told me, walking away to the door.
"Where are you going?" I called after him.
"I'm hungry," he responded, opening the door, "I'm gonna get some chips or something."
"What!?" he didn't answer. Just jumped down the hole and shut the door.
I stood there with my arms up, looking around and beginning to feel lonely.
Not the wisest creation you've made. Bás' voice giggled.
"Shut up!" I spat.
