"It seems like yesterday that I was nothing. Then all of a sudden I'm a volcanic eruption. Then all of a sudden it's like spontaneous combustion. And I'm all up in your face, yelling "Bitch, you can't tell me nothing." Cause I came from the bottom, now everybody's watching. I said it was my time, now I'm who everybody's clocking." - Angel Haze

"I'm proud of you." my big sister, Jessica says, fixing my bow tie. A lot changed over the years. For one, all of us moved back to California after all the drama. Today's my graduation from high school, and tomorrow will be my eighteenth birthday.
"Thanks. Please, do not start crying." I say, growing annoyed. She has tears rolling down her face and everything. "I'm not crying... I'm just so proud of you." she mumbles. "My God, Jessica, you are twenty six years old and you still cry more than any three year old on earth." I say.
She pushes me. "Shut up. I hope you trip walking off the stage." she says. I laugh. "Whatever. I love you. Have you talked to Ant today? You know if he's coming to my graduation?" I ask. Ant is twenty seven and bitter as fuck now. He's still in his feelings about Jessica turning his proposal down again, then having sex with Montana when I was twelve.
She shrugs her shoulders. "You know he can't talk to me. Ms. Polly got him on a leash." she says, laughing, referring to his pornstar girlfriend, Polly Sanchez. I remember when I used to sneak and watch her videos on my iPod and Jessica would catch me. I also remember when I was in middle school, my friends and I would get in trouble for looking at her naked pictures and videos during lunch. That hoe is a hoe, period. Fine as hell, but a hoe with roast beef půssy.
I shake my head. Ant hardly even says two words to Jessica if it has nothing to do with the kids. She is single, but my brother be busting her ass when they think I'm sleep or something.
"I don't know what that nigga was thinking." I say, shaking my head. She giggles. "Me neither. He got with a famous pornstar of all people." she says. I stare at her for a second. "Let me find out you miss Ant." I say. It's not like her and my brother are together. They just fuck and chill like a couple. It works for them. She smacks her lips. "Please, I'm perfectly fine as a single woman." she says. "Whatever you say." I mumble, staring at myself in the mirror.
I put my diamond stud earrings in my ears, then comb through my short goatee using my fingers. "Ay, Jessica." I say. She looks up from her phone. "Yes? And hurry up, I don't want you to be late." she says. I nod my head. "I was about to ask, why did God make me so sexy? Look at me... dang I'm a fine ass nigga." I say, admiring myself in the mirror.
She laughs. "You so freaking cocky, Darius." she says. I shake my head. "I know I'm fine. I'm ready to go though, I'll go get the kids." I say, walking out of her bedroom.
I walk downstairs to my six year old nephews Noble and Majesty's bedroom. My five year old niece Reign is sitting on Majesty's bed playing with her toys. Long story short, Ant and Jessica some type of way ended up having a one night stand after her and Montana had a heated argument a year after the twins were born and she winded up pregnant with Reign. They claim they were drunk.
"Darius!" Reign screams, jumping in my arms. I kiss her cheek, then put her down. She is so cute, she looks just like Jessica but she has Ant's lips and nose. "Wassup? Yall ready to go to my graduation?" I ask. "Yes! I got dressed all by myself." Reign answers, smiling wide at me. "I'm ready. Will daddy be there?" Majesty asks. I shrug my shoulders. "Fuck daddy." Noble says under his breath, still laying in his bed.
"Ooooh! I'm telling mommy you said a bad word about daddy!" Reign says. I shake my head. I remember when Noble was born. He was a mean ass baby. He hardly ever smiled, all he did was punched on people and looked at people crazy. He didn't want anybody to hold him except Jessica and he'd only let Ant hold him every blue moon. Nothing really changed, he's still mean as hell for no reason. He just wakes up pissed off everyday.
"Watch your mouth. You only six, you don't need to be saying that. Mane, get up and put your clothes on so we can go. You don't have an option." I say. He sits up in his bed. "I'm sleepy, uncle Darius. Can you just record your graduation and show me?" he asks. "Get out the bed, now!" I hear Jessica yell at him.
She walks in the room holding a leather belt. I feel bad for her. Ant did good as a father until he started messing with Polly. It's like he only sees them every blue moon. So, Montana is pretty much more like a father to them. Without me, Montana, Nathan, and Vonte occasionally coming around, these kids would've drove her crazy.
"Noble, if I say it one more time." she says. He yawns. "Ma, shut up." he screams at her. "I said I'm sleepy, I'm not going!" he adds. "Oooh! Wait til I tell Montana on you!" Majesty says. "So. Tell Montana you a snitch while you at it." Noble says.
Jessica snatches Noble up, then starts beating his ass with the belt. For some odd reason, he ain't crying. She swings harder, hitting his thigh meat. He screams and instantly breaks down crying. "Now, get your ass up and put your clothes on! You got five minutes! I ain't gone tell you again! Now, try me again!" she threatens, then hits him one last time.
He walks off mumbling. She snatches him back to her by his tank top. "What you just say?" she asks. "I said you look pretty. " he lies, then rushes to his closet to get something to wear.
She shakes her head. Montana walks in the room then nods his head at me. I glance at the small scar on his neck. When they got into that big fight in New York after Ant's disaster proposal, Nathan shot him in his neck, trying to kill him because he was trying to slit Ant's throat while Ant was fighting him. Eventually, him and Nathan got over it.
Majesty hugs him. "Hey, favorite daddy!" Reign exclaims, jumping in his arms. I shake my head. She knows Ant is her dad, but for whatever reason, she always calls my brother her dad. Majesty does too but Noble could really care less.
He kisses her cheek, then looks at Jessica. "What happened in here?" he asks her. "Noble cussed and he screamed at mommy." Reign answers for her. Jessica sighs. "I'll go wait in your truck. I'm so mad. That boy is so disrespectful just like Ant." she says, turning to walk out. Montana stops her, then hugs her. He whispers something in her ear that made her smile then kisses her neck.
"Hello? Everybody must be forgetting I have to graduate today and I sorta kinda need to be there within the next twenty minutes?" I ask.
"Noble, come here." Montana demands as if he didn't just hear what I said. Noble walks out the closet halfway dressed, holding his Jordan tee shirt that matches the new Jordans that came out yesterday he's wearing.
"I heard you cussed and talked crazy to your momma. That true?" he calmly asks. Noble looks him up and down. "Nope." he lies, snickering. "You think I'm playing with you?" Montana asks. "Maybe." Noble answers. Montana snatches him up. "Those new Jordans, take em off. Go put on your broke down play shoes. That's what you wearing until I say otherwise. You wanna disrespect your momma, well you finna see how it feels when all your friends disrespect you for wearing beat up shoes." Montana calmly says.
Noble's eyes tear up. "Please, Montana, I'm sorry. I can't wear those, everybody will laugh at me." he cries. "Wait, I'm supposed to care?" Montana asks in a bored tone. "You ain't my daddy." Noble snaps, then pushes him.
Montana raises his eyebrow then snatches him to the floor. He takes the Jordans off his feet, then storms to the closet. He walks out holding all Noble's brand new shoes he never even wore. "Fine. How bout I take back everything I bought you and only leave the play shoes. Now, put those shoes on and let's go!" Montana demands.

I'm so nervous. I'm graduating at the top of my class one point from being valedictorian. A mixed girl who has a chinese dad and black mom got it instead because I failed a test at the last minute, which immediately put her ahead of me. The both of us have been basically battling it out since freshman year. It's okay though, I still did good.
"Darius Montgomery, salutatorian with a grade point average of 5.0, one point from our valedictorian's 5.1 grade point average. He was also accepted into every Ivy League school. Congratulations." my Principal, Ms. Brown says, handing me my diploma while shaking my hand. It seems like everybody in the crowd is screaming for me. A lot of them are older people who were amazed at me making grades that high, some are thirsty girls who would never get a chance with me, and the most important is my brothers, sister, nephews, my niece, and everybody else that's close to me. It feels good because most people don't even believe it's possible to make grades that high, especially for someone who society views as a thug.
"I love you, Darius!" I hear Jessica scream, making everybody laugh. I shake my head, laughing as my principal puts my medals around my neck. I clear my throat, standing in the center of the stage holding the microphone to deliver the salutatory speech.
"Good morning, everyone. My name is Darius Montgomery." I start, glancing at the news reporters in the crowd as they record me. They really made my grades a big deal.
They cut me off by screaming all over again. "Teachers, students, friends, and family, it's my honor to be this class' salutatorian." I say. Once again, the people start screaming. I laugh a little. "For those confused on what a salutatorian is, it's the student who ranks second highest in a graduating class. I would like to congratulate my biggest competition, my good friend Liah Wang, this class' valedictorian, for beating me by one point. You deserve it, and I'm truly proud of you. I enjoyed this friendly battle over the past four years. Congratulations, Li Li" I say, looking at her. She starts blushing, looking down as people start awwing.
I laugh. "I didn't want to deliver a cliché speech, so I decided to do my own thing and tell you guys my story instead. I was born in Chicago, Illinois and I spent the first eight years of my life in the Englewood neighborhood on the Southside. I was young, but I had already been through and seen more than most adults. I was very familiar with abuse, drugs, and murder. By the time I was six, I had already lost so much to the streets. People close to me were either dead or in jail. I've attended more funerals than I can count. My mother was a drug addict. I was burned, cut, and beat until I couldn't breathe. My mother beat me so bad and left me to die in an ally or the middle of the street numerous times." I say, holding back tears. "Her, and everyone around would tell me how I wasn't shit and how I'd never be shit. Excuse my language. She also told me I'd be dead like the rest, or in prison along with my brothers and other guys I knew before I turned eighteen. Eventually, I was put in the system. Months later, I was adopted by a family in California who were a little crazy, I'll admit. But that was the best thing that ever happened to me, because I met my big sister, Jessica, and through her, I reconnected with my brother, Montana." I say, glancing where they are. She's crying like I expected as everyone else scream and clap.
"Well, I remember when my mom would sit down and tell me how she'd have my body cremated and dumped in the toilet because according to her, I'd be dead in the streets before I even got a chance to graduate. Now, look at me. Who would've thought I'd be standing before you guys today as salutatorian, telling my life story?" I ask. A lot of people in here are crying a little, clapping. "What I'm trying to say is, it's never too late to become someone great. Never let any negativity bring you down no matter who it's coming from. No matter what, keep fighting for what you want, and it'll happen. Anything is possible no matter where you come from or how rough it is. Good or bad, life is what you make it and I'm living proof. Thank you, and congratulations, my fellow class mates." I say, then take a bow.
Everybody's screaming and clapping so loud right now. My principal wipes tears out of her eyes, then hugs me, smiling. "I'll miss you, Darius. Stay golden, son, and good luck." she whispers in my ear. I kiss her cheek. "Thank you." I say. I go take a seat in the front row next to Liah. "I'm sorry to hear that." she whispers at me. "I'm fine. It only made me a better man." I say
The graduation is now over. I'm outside talking to my family. "I'm proud of you. I never got a chance to graduate even though I was smart. Keep your head on straight, don't fuck your life up. One day, you'll be able to say the world is yours. I believe in you and I'm proud. Congratulations." Montana says, shaking my hand.
"Thank you, man. You seen Ant?" I ask. He nods his head towards the left. I look over at Ant then shake my head in embarrassment. A lot of people who know I'm connected to him are looking at me crazy because he just showed up with a well known pornstar. He's dressed in a purple and cheetah print hat with a fedora on his head to match, he got on some loud purple pimp shoes, and some old school sunglasses. This nigga is also holding a cane. To make it worse, he has his seven year old son Jessie dressed just like him. Polly has on a short, tight, purple dress with all her titties hanging out the top. "Ain't this some shit." Jessica says, shaking her head.
"Wassup? Congratulations." Ant says, handing me a stack of hundreds. "I'm proud of you." he says as if what he has on is completely normal. I look past him then shake my head as Vonte does cartwheels, causing people to look at him crazy. He does a split. "Congratulations to my young nigga, Darius, fuck you talm bout?" he yells, dapping me up. "This nigga twenty eight years old and still act like a damn eight year old." Montana says, face palming himself.
"You and Ant are embarrassing." I say. "What I do?" Ant asks. "Nothing. I'll just pretend you look like a regular human being right now." I sarcastically answer him. Majesty jumps in Ant's arms and Reign is talking to Jessie. Noble is standing behind Jessica with a funky ass attitude. "Hey, Noble poo." Ant's hoe ass girlfriend says, squatting in front of him. Her boobs are all in his face. His eyes trail directly to her chest. "Are those fake?" he asks, poking one of them.
"Noble!" Jessica snaps, snatching him to her. I shake my head, tuning her and Ant out as they fuss at him. They need to send his bad ass to boot camp. He is a product of his father, so I don't know why his craziness is such a surprise to them. That boy needs to be on medicine and he needs to be in somebody's church.
Liah walks up to me, then hugs me extremely close. She pulls away, then kisses my cheek. "I'll miss you, Darius. Congratulations to you as well and I'm proud of you. Thanks for what you said about me on stage." she says. I nod my head. "I just wanted to say thanks for all of the times you've studied with me, stood up for me when I was picked on, and for being a great friend. You were my only friend when everyone else laughed and called me a nerd or called me ugly. I wouldn't have made it this far with my grades without you helping me so much." she says, then kisses me dead on my lips, causing me to look at her crazy.
"Oooh." Vonte says. I stare at her for a second. She was hideous when I met her freshman year, but she's kinda cute now. I wipe her lipstick off my mouth. My ex girlfriend who I'm trying to get back with, Yanda walks over here. "Darius, what the fuck was that? Didn't I say we were getting back together? Why are you letting this ugly, nerdy bitch to kiss you? She is fucking ugly! This bitch got those big ass glasses and ugly ass braces on her teeth, really, Darius?" she snaps on me.
I sigh. Liah weakly smiles. "I'll see you around, I guess." she mumbles, then walks away with her head hanging down. She was always really insecure. I don't know where she got all that confidence to kiss me from. I turn around and look at Yanda, immediately getting slapped in my face by her.
"Who the hell is this? I swear, I'm about to kick her lil disrespectful ass." Jessica says, glaring at Yanda. "It's cool, I got it. Just wait for me in the car." I answer her. Jessica don't play when it comes to me. My family didn't even know I had a girlfriend, Montana thought I was gay because I never speak on what girl I liked. I just don't feel like a girl is worth mentioning to my family if I don't see myself building a life with her.
I watch as my family walk into the parking lot. I turn around then look at Yanda. "I can have any nigga I want and I'm still fuckin trying with you!" she snaps. "You lucky somebody like me would even fuck with you!" she adds. I raise my eyebrow. "Correction, you lucky somebody like me would even acknowledge your ol 1.0 G.P.A. havin ass. Nobody even knew who you were until I claimed you so calm down." I say.
She rolls her eyes. "I'm so sick of you and these fucking hoes, Darius. You said all that good stuff about that nerdy hoe, then kissed her! What the fuck?" she goes off. "I did not kiss her, she kissed me and I did not kiss back. Stop assuming stuff." I say. "Look, I'm sorry. I'm just tired of this. Plus, last week you went to prom with a different girl instead of me. Why was that?" she asks. "Because I wanted to. You always have an attitude, and prom is once in a lifetime. I was not about to let you ruin that night for me." I answer. "Why would you go with that stuck up ass girl, Tyah?" she screams, causing people to look at us. "Lower your voice and unball your fist. Don't swing on me, I'll mess around and slap the shit out of you." I say. I never saw myself putting my hands on a woman, but I have punched her in her mouth a few times. They were reflexes because she would punch me in my face off guard like she was a man, and I'd naturally swing back and almost knock her unconscious.
"You said you didn't hit me on purpose last time. Liar." she says. "I really didn't hit you on purpose. I'm not a woman beater. But you know better than to come up behind me and punch me out the blue like that. You need to learn how to communicate with your mouth instead of your hands, because laying your hands on me ain't cool." I say. She draws back and punches me dead in my mouth like I didn't just say what I said. "Hit me, nigga, I dare you!" she snaps.
"You know what, if I go get my big sister out that car, she'll stomp you out right infront of this church." I say, thinking about calling Jessica since I can't beat her ass like I want to. She brings out my inner craziness sometimes, but I love this crazy girl for some reason.
"I got one question for you, Darius. I'm sorry for hitting you, but just answer this question." she mumbles, wiping tears out her eyes. "What is it?" I ask, putting my phone away. She looks around, then wipes more tears off her face. "Well, you know I act tough, but I love you and I want to fix our relationship and get back together, right? And the stuff you do with these girls drive me crazy." she says. "I don't even know what stuff with girls I do, Yanda. What do I do?" I ask. "You know what you do! So many of these hoes got different stories about things you say or do to them. Then, you swear you didn't do anything, you text me telling me how you want to fix it, but then you go and do the same shit and when I confront you, you act like you don't care like you are now." she says. "Shit, maybe I don't care." I say, looking at her crazy. "Why would I if I'm always being accused? I don't even associate with those girls, they lying, that's what hoes who want your man do. Think, Yanda." I say, tapping her forehead.
She slaps my hand away. I laugh. "Stop being mad at me. I told you I didn't kiss that girl and I didn't mess around with those girls at school, at all. If I'm trying to get back with you, why would I do that stuff?" I ask. "You're a good liar, I've been knowing you since eighth grade. You are sitting in my face lying." she says. "No, you want me to be lying so you can be right." I sarcastically say.
"Let's be real. Why did we break up, Darius?" she asks. "Hmm, you don't have a smart ass remark now, do you? Answer it, why did we break up?" she asks, getting all hyped up again. "Because my sister's baby daddy let you in his house like a dumb ass when I was on the couch making out with your best friend." I answer. Ant is a retard for that, I'll never forgive him for getting me caught, then laughing while Yanda kicked my ass up and down his house.
"Exactly! My best fucking friend! So, don't act like I don't have a reason to feel insecure like you cheating! If you did that with my best friend of all people, why should I believe you wouldn't do it with those girls who don't matter to me?" she screams. At this point, both of us are the only ones up here.
I don't see how I managed to stay on top of my grades and still deal with a crazy girlfriend all three of the years I was with her. We broke up three months ago when she caught me cheating.
"I don't know, Yanda. I really, really, really need to be at home reading my book on starting a business. So, like, can you just put this conversation on hold?" I ask. Of course, I changed a lot since I was a kid, it's called maturing and growing up. I wasn't gonna be the same little innocent, cute Darius who did everything right forever. But something that never changed was my love for reading things that could help me in the long run. Education is everything to me, so I really would rather do that than deal with this drama from my ex.
"Fuck you and those books! How in the world do you want to get back together if you act like I don't mean anything to you? Are those books gone be there for you through everything?" she yells. "Hell yeah, because if all goes bad, they won't leave me, and I can still read them." I answer, shrugging my shoulders.
"You know what, forget you." she says, walking away. I walk over to her. "Come here." I say, grabbing her arm. She snatches away. "No, I'm tired of you." she says. I wrap my arms around her waist from behind, then kiss the back of her neck. "Okay, I'm sorry." I say.
She sighs, then turns around and pushes me off her. "Can I ask you something?" she asks. "What?" I ask. I hope she don't ask me something crazy that'll result in her beating my ass when I answer it. I'm honest when she asks me stuff majority of the time, and I don't plan on lying. "When you took Tyah to prom instead of me, which was wrong in itself, did you fuck her?" she asks like it hurt her to ask me that. "I'm a virgin." I answer, smiling.
That response set her off. She punching me any and everywhere she can, crying, screaming about everything we've been through, screaming fuck you, I hate you, and everything else. I grab her arms. "Stop." I demand. She snatches away, then clocks me in my mouth. I snatch her, then slam her on the ground. She starts kicking on me. "Get off me! I hate you so much, Darius, I'm so done! Fuck you!" she screams at the top of her lungs, kicking me all in my face, trying to get off the ground. "Calm down." I calmly say, holding her down.
She stops trying to fight me after five minutes of that. She stands, then grabs a piece of her dress that ripped off. I take my dress shirt off because she got blood stains from her beating me all in my face on it for one. I hand it to her. "Put it on, your bra broke." I say.
She snatches the shirt from me, then puts it on. "Graduation was not supposed to be like this. We were not supposed to end like this. I'm a real ass bitch and I'm ride or die. You stupid for letting me go." she says. I shake my head. "You know I hate when females call themselves bitches. Don't do that." I say. "Fuck you, call me when you get yourself together." she says, starting to walk away. I grab her arm, then turn her around to face me. "I put it on my life, I love you. But what I'm not about to do is chase you, so do you." I say, then let her go.
She stares at me with tears in her eyes. She slaps me, then walks away. I throw one of her wedges at her. "You left your shoe, retard!" I yell at her. "Fuck you!" she screams, storming away. "Dumb bitch." I mumble. "Whoooooooweeeeeeee she KO'd yo lil pussy ass!" Vonte yells, hanging out the back window of Ant's Lamborghini SUV.
I narrow my eyes at him, then throw my middle finger up. I go get in the backseat next to him. "Montana drove Jessica away from here because she got out the car about to beat that girl ass with a baseball bat when she saw her hit you." Ant says, laughing. "Uh uh, do not mention her name around me." Polly says, looking at him crazy. He sighs, then kisses her lips. "Sorry, baby." he mumbles, then goes back to driving. I shake my head. She turned him into a soft nigga. I never thought I'd see the day Ant let a woman boss him around. It's like a part of him died when Jessica didn't want him.
"Ew, I can't believe you actually kiss her. You just kissed dıck, pûssy, ball sacks, booty cause she eat that too, and everything else. Have you not seen her põrn videos?" Vonte asks, gagging.
I laugh, shaking my head as they go back and forth. "You need to shut up. I'm making money. You just mad cause you can't get any of Polly Sanchez." she says. "I've seen you fuck and I've seen that kitten, and let's just say, that shit is stretched as hell. It ain't no kitten, it's more like a lion. And then it's hairy. You can't be hairy and loose. Bitch, pick one." Vonte says, looking her up and down.
I shake my head, tuning them out. I look out the window at Liah sitting in her car, crying. I guess she saw what happened between me and Yanda. I would go try to apologize to Liah for the way Yanda acted, but it's not really my fault she kissed me and it's not like I'll see her again after now anyway, she'll get over me.
