8. The Deathly Monsters (2)

"Darcy, what is it?" The Doctor asks as I scan the wall and snatch the newspaper out of his hands.

"Well it's not much, so far. Only the fact that I've seen more references to Harry Potter than I care to see in a lifetime. In that newspaper article - people running into walls and asking for platform 9 and 3/4 - that's where the Hogwarts Express takes off from. This sign painted on the wall..." I point to the red scrawled message. "That sign appears in the second book of Harry Potter. And Jack's father's initials are the same as the headmaster Dumbledore's. Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore. I don't know what it means, but all these references are scaring me. I can't make sense of it all." I take a deep breath after explaining, expecting him to look absolutely confused, but he doesn't.

"Jack," He says softly. "We're going to get your dad back. But first you're going home, alright?"

*****************

"Look!" I point to the paper desperately. "The people's names who have gone missing: Heather Jenny Gold - sound familiar?" I plow on, heedless of his blank look. "Hermoine Jean Granger! look - this guy was taken from just around the corner - Reggie Benjamin Wentworth equals Ronald Billius Weasley. Even... Harold Jackson Peeve - Harry James Potter... Voldemort or... Tom Marvolo Riddle. Tim Matthew Rider disappeared from school last week. Dan Meer was on his way home from practice when he mysteriously vanished. Arthur, Jack's father, never returned fom work. And Steven Todd Silver kind of looks like Severus Tobius Snape... are you getting this?"

"Oh yes." His eyes gleam.

"What the heck does it mean?" my hand aches from writing it all down. "There's really a Hogwarts? I don't understand how any of this is happening or possible."

"I've seen it before." The Doctor taps his fingers on the table. "This smells like the work of the Borsik race."

"Sounds like the Basalik." I mutter. "What's next, he'd hiding in a chamber of secrets?"

"We need to get back to JK with this. If anyone can help us, she can. I think that headache was more than that." He takes off running back the way we've come.

"What do you mean? What are the Borsik race? Why are all the books..." I take a deep breath when I realize he's way ahead of me anyway. I turn around the corner only to come face to face with some hideous creature. It had huge gaping eyes and a snake like body covered in scales. It's black eyes stare at me. It snarls, and my mind falls into blackness.

***********

My eyes snap open, blinking as they ajust to the sudden light, only to realize I'm slumped on the edge of a brick wall building, and it's not at all comfortable, but I can't seem to move.

"Come on, then." My head turns in the direction of the strange sound. The Doctor's staring at me. "No time for resting! We have to find JK." He grabs my hand and runs back to the house, barging in. The maid stops us, eyes wide.

"Can I help you again, sir?"

"Yes. We need to see JK."

"She's busy." The maid says curtly. "Won't you call tomorrow?"

"Tell her it's important!" The Doctor runs into the next room, scanning things with his screwdriver. I stop in the doorway, still feeling slightly out of it. When I turn my hand around, there's a tiny black gash on my left wrist, and a black liquid is slowly seeping up my arm, inching bit by bit.

I pull my jacket back down and watch the Doctor frantically running around, examining every tiny detail, his eyes not missing a detail.

"If you don't mind, sir." JK's slightly strained voice says beside me. "I would like you to please get out of my house. I don't know who you are, or why you're here. If you're lucky for a publicity stunt you won't be getting it. I won't be giving you any details, now get. Out."

"You... might want to listen to this though, things are happening - bad things around town. Your books are literally coming to l..."

My vision starts wavering terribly. I stumble agains the door frame, looking up at the world swinging back and fourth.

"Please!" She interrupts, taking a few steps forwards. "I'm very busy, now I'm asking you to..."

"Doctor?" I interrupt, feeling suddenly sick, then the cold ground comes up to meet me.

******************

3rd Person POV.

The Doctor hurries forwards, crouching down. "Look, I'm terribly sorry to be intruding." He scans Darcy with his sonic screwdriver, which starts beeping. "Oh my gosh." He feels her forehead and runs his hand down her arm, pulling up her sleeve, glimpsing the blackened vein of liquid traveling up her arm. "Oh, no no no. Why would you do this? She's not even here anymore. It's like her body is but her spirit just teleported away..."

He stands back up. "But you might want to listen to what we - what I have to say. There's aliens here. Now I don't fully understand how, but they seem to be taking people away from their homes - people with the same initials as those of whom are in your books." He props Darcy up on the couch. "And these aliens I believe, are called Borsiks. They're very powerful, but usually not bothered with a tiny little planet like Earth. They feed off people's energy, however, if they do happen to come here. They give people ideas - create their own ideal universe and literally drain people dry." he turns towards her. "I need your help - Darcy needs your help. I need you to tell me exactly where these stories come from. Because when you had that headache just before - I think we both know it was more than that." He looks up at her. "Please, let me help."

"Well..." JK takes a seat beside the couch with a troubled look on her face. "The thing is... I had the idea for the first book when i was traveling on the train from Manchester to London. I used to work in London before... before my former boyfriend and I decided to move to Manchester and... well I don't know." She stops, thinking hard. "The idea of a young wizard boy at wizarding school just sort of came to me. After that, all the other characters just sort of... flooded in."

"Mhmm. And, that's all that happens? When you have these ideas for characters?"

"Well... yes, that's exactly what happens. Sometimes they're my own ideas and then other times it's like I go into some sort of trance. I just see things and write them down, whatever fits best with the story." She frowns after him. "You don't think that's relevent, do you?"

"Of course it is." He turns back to Darcy, rolling up her sleeve. "I've seen this before... some sort of..." He flips the sonic screwdriver over in his hand and scans it. "Aha! A chip! I knew it."

"What?" JK looks puzzled.

"They've implanted her with some sort of micro chip. That's interesting."

"And what does that mean?" She asks.

"Well, it looks like they've taken Darcy - just sort of spirited her away somewhere. Probably to this world they've created from inside your head... You got a phone?"

"Uh... yeah." She hands him her mobile phone. He flips it open and dials a few numbers.

"Let's... hope this works."

*****************

I wake up to a buzzing noise. It's so annoying. It has to be my alarm clock. What time is it anyway? I reach out my hand and my hand drops off into space. I sit up with a start, hand to my head as I try and remember where I am. Prison? I don't think I remember being arrested.

I take a look around. It looks like I'm in some sort of hospital ward, but when I move my hand, I find it chained to the bedpost. When I look down at it, it's burning once again. Burning intensly. This is getting too regular for my liking. And the buzzing continues. Then I realize what it is.

Gingerly, I remove my phone from my pocket and squint at the unknown number. "H...hello?" Who the heck is calling me? And where the hell am I?"

"Darcy?" I almost drop the phone in relief.

"Doctor! Where am I? Where are you?"

"We were hoping you could tell us. I think you might be in the world the Borsiks have created."

"How did I get here?" I ask, slightly panicked.

"The Borsik inserted a microchip in your arm - probably when you fell behind running to Mrs. Rowling's house. That allowes your body to remain while your conscious being is actually in another location. It swapped over when the liquid finally penetrated enough readings to form your conscious over in the paralell world you're now in. And I want you to do me a favour - be careful - but see if you can move around and tell us where you are."

"I... I can't." I tug at the handcuffs around my wrist. "I'm a little tied up... literally."

"Hang on, I've got an idea. Hold the phone over the top of the handcuffs."

"I don't think my phone has lock picking abilities." I say dryly.

"No, I'm going to send you a video of my sonic screwdriver. The buzzing will transmit through the phone and hopefully get you out of there."

"No idea how that works, but go ahead."

"One moment." There's the sound of his sonic screwdriver's comforting buzz. "OK, give it a go."

I put the phone near the cuffs and play the video. In a few seconds the cuffs snap off, leaving my wrist slightly red and sore but otherwise unharmed. "It worked. I'll have a look around and call you if I find anything. My battery's about to run out." I sigh. "Why is it always in movies and stuff where the battery is almost dead."

"Stay safe." He warns before I hang up.

"Right, now where are we?" I spin around and get off the bed slowly. I seem to be in some sort of hospital ward, by the looks. I make my way slowly down the rows and rows of empty beds before peeking out the doorway. I can hear the sound of voices further down the hallway. Taking a hasty look around, I sneak down, following my ears and come to a stop beside a huge doorway. I peek around the corner and my eyes widen at what I see. It's like a huge feast is going on. Candles are hanging from the roof, seemingly floating in mid-air, and all around me are kids, separated into different tables. At the head of the table on a raised platform are a few older looking people. If I didn't know better it'd look like... I grab out my phone and hastily hit redial.

"Doctor?!" I hiss into the phone. "I'm going to send you a video. You have to see this." I hold it up to the feast and stop after a few seconds and hit send.

There's muffled voices as the Doctor and JK discuss the video. "Darcy, JK says it's exactly like..."

"The feast scenes in Harry Potter, right JK?" I interrupt. "Can you put me on to her? Please?"

"Darcy!" JK's voice is full of warmth. "I'm glad you're ok - how come you know so much about my world I've created?"

"Uh... big fan... long story." I mutter. "But if I didn't know better, this looks like Hogwarts. Like the hallways, the feast room. The teachers..." I peer up the front. "I mean they look differently, but that girl that disappeared - Heather - who shared Hermoine Granger's initials - is sitting with Harold and Reggie. And they seem to be separated in groups of tables, just like Gryffindor, Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Hufflepuff. They even have an old headmaster - I'm guessing Jack's father - that looks like Dumbledore."

"And how does Snape look?" JK's voice fills with excitement. "Hooked nose?"

"Long black hair, slightly demeaning eyes." I smile.

"Please, focus here!" The Doctor interrupts my fangirling.

"Sorry." I mutter. "What can I do? I can't keep... hang on." I hiss and shove the phone back in my pocket, hastily legging it down the hallway as all the students file out. "I think they're going to a lesson. I'll see if I can sneak in on one."

I follow an unsuspecting student down a long hallway and peek my head into a classroom that's just filling up.

"Good morning class." The teacher I recognise as the Snape look-a-like says.

There's a mumbled chorus of greeting from the class. "Now," Snape continues. "today, in defence against the humans, we'll be teaching tricks to help you against items they call guns. They're extremely dangerous - and fatal to any one of you. Now, you can simply disarm them by using the Expelliarmus charm, or even the Stupify - my personal favourite." He pauses for emphasis. I duck my head back out.

"JK! Doctor! It's like a paralell universe! They're having lessons in defence against the humans, on how to avoid getting shot... looks like they're trying to raise up an army. I don't like this. They even use the same charms, like Expelliarmus and Stupify."

"It's real." JK breathes. "I wish I could see it."

"Darcy, you need to get near the headmaster's office. The Boslik are very protective over their central command office. It'll be guarded, so be very very careful. If you get in, you should be able to access personal data sheets and try and find this plan of theirs."

"I don't like this." I whimper. "I wish you were here."

"No, you can do this." The Doctor says confidently.

I hang up again and hurry as fast as I can down the hallways, keeping to the shadows. I follow the general flow of the hallways, picking random left and rights until I come across a huge door marked: Headmaster. Knocking would be contrary, so instead I ease the door open and peek inside. There seems to be no one around. I walk through cautiously and almost trip over a small stick lying near the door.

"AHA!" The Dumbledore look-a-like cries triumphantly. He doesn't look a whole heap like Dumbledore, except for the white hair and glasses that look a little out of place. "Gotcha! The good old wand on the floor trick gets them every time."

I inch backwards as he waves his wand in my face, kicking the wand backwards as I go with my foot, hoping he doesn't notice. He turns around and I pick it up and slip it into my pocket. "So, something tells me you aren't exactly who you say you are..." He suddenly points his wand at me.

"Petrifico Totalus!" A wall seems to hit me. My arms snap to my sides - my leggs together. I literally freeze agains the wall I'm standing against, and I can't move a muslce, a finger. I even feel like I can't blink. My mind flashes back to the Harry Potter books. this has got to be the full body binding spell that Hermoine used on Neville once. "Legilimens!" He says again. Something hits my mind in a wave. He's in my head! I realize, trying desperately to block him out, but the sheer force of his will is far too strong. In a few seconds he chuckles darkly. "The Doctor? Oh I haven't seen him for quite some time. Quite some time, indeed. You may be of some use after all." He muses, still fingering his wand.

"Look, whatever you're doing... you've got to stop this." I say desperately.

"Oh, you have no idea." he laughs darkly and quite suddenly changes form right in front of my eyes. Instead of the human being that was here a second ago it turns into what I assume is a Borsik - like the snake thing I saw a few short hours ago. Deep black eyes and huge, scaly body, taller thann me, but with a long tail behind. I try to refrain from showing my abhorrence at this creature, but he chuckles. It sounds more like gurgling in his case. "I hate these human bodies. So many restrictions - awful raggedy clothes you put upon yourselves."

"What are you trying to do?!" I ask boldly. "Can't you leave the human race alone?"

"Oh, you have no idea. We had been working on this plan for quite some time. You see the human planet earth is such a good place to start over."

"What, you destroyed your planet?" I ask in disgust.

"Destroyed? No, we were invaded. By horrible metal creatures. Metal creatures that spoke like our lords, that wanted us to be like them and made us bow down to them. But we would never bow to them. So we came here. We sought help building a proper universe..."

"So you came into someone's mind and used their thoughts to create your own ideal world?" I can't turn my head but I can smile at the voice that sends hope jumping up in me. Even if I can't move.

The Borsik turns its head and snarls horribly. "Doctor. And..."

"Yes, that's right. I'm the author of your world. And like it or not I can destroy you, so be careful." JK runs over to me. "What's he done to you?"

"But of... magic." I say. "If you could... free me I'd much appreciate it."

"How?" She looks up at me. "It looks like he's used the petrifico totalus on you!"

"He has!" I say. "There's a wand in my pocket, can you get it out? And don't let the Borsik see!"

She sneaks the wand out of my pocket. "I can't believe I'm actually doing this!" She points it at me. "Finite." I gasp as the invisible chains holding me snap off and I can finally move again. "Now get the wand out of his hand!" I whisper harshly.

With a nervous look at me, she points at the Borsik. "Expelliarmus!"

The wand goes flying out of his hand. I catch it mid-air and swivel it in the air so it's pointing at him. "That's it, Borsik. You're done for." I say triumphantly. I look over at the Doctor who flashes me a smile.

"Well go on then." He snarls. "Finish me of, if you've got the guts. Go on. I dare you." He looks at JK, whose eyes are wide. "I've caused the brainwashing of many people who you can't get back again. And I've killed several of them when the experiments didn't work. Kill me where I stand." He stretches his arms out.

JK's eyes are flashing with anger. "A...Avada ked..."

"WAIT!" I launch in front of her - probably not the wisest decision seeing she's muttering the unforgivable curse. "YOU CAN'T KILL HIM!"

"He deserves it!" JK argues hotly.

"No, please just listen. He said his planet was destroyed - taken over by another alien race. They had nowhere left to go, so they came here. They didn't have a choice. They fed off our energy and used your mind to create an alternate universe in which they could be the masters. They don't need to be killed, they just need to be helped." I inch to the side so JK is still pointing her wand at the Borsik whose trembling with fury, or rage I don't know.

"I have a plan for that." The Doctor says. "If you show me how you've brainwashed everyone into thinking this world is a reality - I can get you home - create a new planet for you and your family to live in peace. Kryton is up there. It has too much energy for any other living thing to survive there, but your kind is literally starving here. The humans aren't providing enough energy for you. And that's why you created this world, because the magic feeds on energy. You could literally empower people and then destroy the world with magic which would curse an energy explosion. There would be so much of it that anything else left living would be dead." He grits his teeth. "You were going to wipe out millions of people just so you could live here."

"You and your words." The Boslik scoffs. "What harm will they bring me?"

"You seem to forget, hun." JK pipes up. "I made this universe what it is from words that I wrote down. The magic here is real. The spells are real and this place - Dumbledore's office." She grins at it. "It's amazing. And all created with words. I'd say words are pretty powerful, wouldn't you?" She waves the wand in the air. "Do as the Doctor says."

*****************

"This is incredible!" The Doctor looks over the brainwashing machine. It certainly looks complicated. There's some sort of brown seat in the middle with a helmet and tubes attatched to the side of a huge generator. "It might take a while to destroy... but if I can input a reversing pattern it should have everyone returned to their normal selves, and wake up back in the real world." He scans it with his sonic screwdriver and types a pattern furiously into a keyboard.

"I think we can help with the destroying, don't you?" I grin at JK. She looks at me.

"A destroying curse? How did you know about that?! It doesn't come in until later."

"Well... let's just say I have an overactive imagination." I roll my eyes. "Can we do it now?" I beg the Doctor. He laughs humorlessly.

"If I didn't know better, you just want to blow something up."

"Something that isn't human and is going to hurt my human race - yeah I'm keen to blow it up." I admit.

"Alright, there you go. Once it's completely destroyed it'll return everyone to their normal state." He takes a look at the Borsik. "You still with us?"

It snarls but doesn't object. "You better hold true to your promise, Doctor."

"Confringo!" JK and I yell at once. The machine starts spitting sparks and then blows up in a massive bang. I duck a flying chunk of metal and high-five JK.

************

When we go back to the main hall, JK is literally gaping at everything. "It's so real!" She touches the walls. "It's like... that universe just jumped out of my head and came here. This is amazing!" We step into dining room where hundreds of students are clutching their heads, and beside them their Borslik counterparts tower over them, snarling at their leader. They communicate in an unknown language, with the Doctor looking on, determination in his eyes.

"We have agreed to leave in peace." The Borsik says soberly.

"Good. Excellent! A very very wise decision!" The Doctor claps his hands together. "You'll get a new planet - all of you. And it'll be good!

**************************8

"I can't believe all of this." JK sits back sipping her tea with a laugh. "I'm never ever going to forget that adventure. I got to go into my own world! Imagine that! I saw Dumbledore's office... and the main hall and... the candles hanging from the sky just like I'd planned."

"Not an ideal world, though." The Doctor twirls the wand around in his hands. "I mean you point sticks at things and say words?"

"Oi, don't diss my wand." I snatch it out of his hands and point it around. "How did you guys get there anyway? You said it was a parelell world!"

"Yes, well there's absolutely no going back now. When we flew out it was sealed shut - sort of like a secret room that's locked. It'll be forgotten about until it gradually fades away forever. But no one will be able to go back through. I made sure it was shut. And the Borsik are happy on their own planet." He sighs. "Usually it doesn't work out that well. Usually they're a bit more uncooperative."

"They didn't seem like such a bad race." I say with a small laugh. "I mean - aliens, of course they're slimey and weird - but after all of that they just wanted their own planet."

"How can I thank you both?" JK asks as the TARDIS materializes right in her living room.

"No thanks neccessary." The Doctor opens up the door. "It was a pleasure just to meet you."

"Mm." I set the cup down to follow him. "You know how you were thinking of pairing Ron and Hermoine? Well I think it would be nice if in fact Harry and He..." A hands slams over my mouth. The Doctor laughs softly behind me.

"Never mind her, she's just excited." He flashes her a smile and pulls me towards the TARDIS.

"Oh come on." I say crossly once we're inside. "Harry and Hermoine are such a good pair together."

"But that's a little too much re-writing of history." The Doctor says. "Imagine how many millions of people would be affected - the amount of people that read Harry Potter. Their version of events would all have to be erased from their memory. The movies would have to completely re-write themselves and - the universe would take at least a month to catch up time again. When you start playing around with stuff like that, it's very very dangerous."

"Oh fine." I swing open the door to wave at JK. "Goodbye! And thank you!"

I run back up to the control pannell. "I don't understand how you came through the universe and to the paralell world. How does that work?"

"Thanks to your microchip, I was able to get a signal on your whereabouts. Then we just sort of teleported in, using your mind as a sort of mind's eye, if you like. We managed to get in the same room as you."

"So you like - hooked me up to a teleport machine?"

"Vortex manipulator - like the one Jack had." The Doctor flicks it to me. "I only ever use it in case of emergency. This one had one teleport in it left anyway - good a time as any to use it."

"I still could have saved us." I say with a shrug.

"Of course you could have." He grins. "And now we're going to get us back to the Borsik planet and rid it of the horrible beasts they're talking about."

"Wer'e going to send them home?" I ask, feeling elated.

"Oh yeah." He smiles. "They will go home indeed."

***********************

A little boy peers past his mop of short black hair, out of his window. His eyes are still red and puffy from another day of crying. But the knock at the door has aroused his curiosity. he opens it cautiously to peek out. "DADDY?!"

He launches himself forwards and the father laughs ecstatically, enveloping his small son in a huge hug. Jack looks over his father's shoulder to see us in the background. The Doctor is leaning against the TARDIS with a smile on his face. I'm almost crying. almost.

"Thank you!" He shouts suddenly as his father carries him inside.

I sigh as we step back in the TARDIS. "This is the part I love about time travel - getting to see people reuinted."

"Oh it's the best." The Doctor agrees. "Now let's go! Year 3000 to the planet Borat."

"Borat for the Borsik. Is there so many tongue twisters in space?"

"She sells seashells by the seashore." He retorts.

"So the Borsik can feed off the energy in that planet you gave them for 80 something years? That's why we're going to the future, right? But wouldn't it be easy if we went a little earlier on? The longer we leave these metal creatures alone on a planet full of energy the sronger they're going to get."

"I'd thought of that." The Doctor says wryly. He flips a ffew switches. "Ah, there we go. 2015. That's much better."

"Oh what would you do without me?" I mutter, flopping down majestically into the passenger's seat. "For risking my life in that paralell world I would like to learn how to fly the TARDIS."

"Ohh." He laughs. "That I'd like to see."

"Come one, promise me once we get back from defeating these guys you'll teach me how?" I beg. "I'm going to be with you forever, remember? And I can see the TARDIS is meant to be operated with more people than just 1. That's why you're running around all the time. Wouldn't it be easier with 2?"

"Well..." He hesitates. "It would..."

"So teach me!" I jump up. "When we've got through clearing off planet Borat teach me how to fly the TARDIS. deal?"

"Alright then." He grins. "Challenge accepted. Non time lord human Darcy is going to know how to fly my TARDIS." He frowns at the roof. "I don't know how I feel about that."
