7. Wish Upon a Star (1)

"Is it always this cool?" I watch the stars whizzing past the window. "A SHOOTING STAR! Make a wish!" I gulp and close my eyes, then open them with a giggle.

"They're all shooting stars. Shooting past us that is." The Doctor grins, rolling his eyes. "What'd you wish for?"

"Tha's not fair." I pout. "I can't tell you that. Everyone knows if you tell your wish it won't come true."

"Well I hope it was: I wish to travel the whole universe inside a big blue box with the handsome Doctor." He says with a smirk.

"You're just over confident." I stare out the window and something catches my eye suddenly - a whoosh of light that is certainly no star. "What is THAT?!" I fling open the door, forgetting we're whizzing through space at 1000 miles an hour. I grip the side of the door hard as I almost get yanked out into the galaxy.

"HEY!" The door slams in my face and the Doctor pulls me back up to the control panel. "Are you trying to get yourself killed? You realize I can communicate with whatever it is out there, now what did you see?"

"I don't know." I frown with concentration. "It was... white and sort of oblong."

"Well that narrows it down." He mutters, scanning the computer. "That's funny. There's nothing out there now."

"I'm sure it was nothin..." I shriek as the Tardis is jerked forwards, and I'm thrown against the table. With a slight groan I fall to my knees and register that the Doctor's crouching beside me, panting as well. We're whizzing now, faster than ever.

"Oh... dangit." He glares at the computer. "What are we doing?! Flying through space and..." He bangs the panell frustratedly. "THIS THING NEVER FLIES WHERE IT'S SUPPOSED TO!"

"What's wrong?" I wince, pulling myself up gingerly.

"The TARDIS is being pulled by someone or something. Whatever it is out there is... pulling us towards it."

"That can't be good?" I question uneasily.

"Oh these things never are." He grins excitedly. "Looks like we aren't going to Hawaii after all..."

"We've stopped." I say suddenly. "Why have we stopped?!"

We are literally hanging in space. I can feel the whole TARDIS stop moving. There's a faint buzzing sound which sounds like static, and the computer flickers to life. There's only a static signal but a crackly voice comes through.

"Sorry about that." It says roughly, cracking up and barely audible. "Rough traveling. Nice top speed though, you'll give me that. I'll give you back some power to get you back on course."

"Who are you?!" The Doctor thumps the computer but the static doesn't disappear.

"Well that's a good question, isn't it? I'm a Commander of a ship. And right now, I'm terribly sorry but I have to go." For a second, a picture of the pilot speaking flashes across the screen, then blinks off in a millisecond. But that's all it takes. I sink back onto the floor in amazement.

"What the blue blazers is going..." The Doctor looks as the TARDIS re-powers itself and starts a normal spiral again. Then he notices me. "Darcy? What is it?"

"T...That... that face." I stutter, turning to look at him with my eyes wide. "That's my brother."

***********************

I seriously can't believe it. I can't believe that for once, probably in his whole life, or maybe twice, the Doctor is actually speechless. He stares at me for a while, then he frowns.

"Your... your brother."

"Yeah, what the hell is he doing out in space?" I mutter. "I didn't think he got out much either."

"Hang on..." He frowns. "How... how is this even possible?"

"You're meant to know." I say. "Can we follow him?" I look up at him, begging. "Please? I mean... he's the only family I have left. I never got to say goodbye... the last time I saw him was back when the earth was being invaded and..." I hang my head, trying not to think of that day.

"Of course we can." The Doctor says softly, flicking a switch on his TARDIS. "We have enough power to lock onto the spaceship and follow its coordinates." He flicks another button on. "Well, we might get to wherever he's going, maybe... half a day later than he does? But we'll be there. I just... don't know where we're going though. It could be... anywhere."

"You mean my brother has a time machine?" I ask. "I swear, I didn't know any of this."

"No, it's OK." He mumbles. "This is actually pretty... epic! Oh he's got me curious now." He stops to smirk at me. "Never try to stop the Doctor when he's curious. A curious Doctor can allow him to do anything he wants." He grins at me. "Allons-y!!"

*******************************

"Where are we?" I emerge from the depths of the TARDIS, pulling on my leather jacket. "Hey, nice wardrobe by the way. I could get lost in there, but I never was one for fashion."

"Personally, I just love our matching shoes." He gives me a shove and points to our matching red converse.

"I found these ages ago, on top of a telephone wire." I muse back to the day I was so happy to have something 'trendy' for a change.

"Ohh, this is... brilliant." The Doctor says unenthusiastically, looking at the TARDIS date.

"What?" I peer over his shoulder.

"Well I was hoping after your harrowing experience we could go somewhere nice like... Hawaii and have a nice few days on the beach surfing." His eyes gleam. "I'd love to surf."

"No, really." I shrug. "It's fine. You know - I know - the TARDIS takes you where you're needed."

He turns around to face me. "This isn't going to be at all easy or fun. Have a look at the date."

"9th of Novermber 1938... oh. Yeah I know this date." I sigh.

"This has got to be the least relaxing place and time in history we can possibly get." He sighs.

"World War II." I sigh. "Oh, and we're in Berlin... on Kristallnacht." I turn away, trying to fight the tears that are threatening my tear ducts. "And... and we can't save anyone?"

"I'm sorry." He sighs. "Now you see why it's so hard being a Time Lord... wanting to save the world from itself but just knowing that you can't." He puts his hands on my shoulders - looks into my eyes steadily. "If you want to stay here, I completely understand. Just stay in the TARDIS - I shouldn't be longer than a few days... and then we can go somewhere..."

"No." I start walking towards the door. "I chose this. When I said I wanted to travel with you, I certainly meant during the ups and downs as well. This is going to be hard, but... I can do it. I'm worried about you, though. I mean... are you really up to a war?" I slam the door in his face, stepping out onto the street, looking around the dark night that surrounds the TARDIS like a fog.

"That wasn't nice." He pokes his head out, locking the TARDIS with a wry smile. "Now, let's go find your brother. Any idea of his whereabouts?"

"No idea." I confirm. I shudder as the sound of breaking glass rings in the air - screams, gunshots and sobs are penetrating my brain. "I'm guessing this way." I point to the blazing fire that's licking up what looks like a church.

"Be careful. Stay close because... these are dangerous times." He pulls his sonic out of his pocket.

"Halt! Everyone will line up! Hurry up!" There's the sound of a gun shot. I jump and breathe out the freezing cold air.

"I thought we were in Berlin." I frown with confusion.

"We are." The Doctor studies a nearby building, keeping to the shadows.

"But how come I can understand what they're saying?" I whisper as we creep closer to the scene.

"The TARDIS translation circuit." He whispers back. "It's translating for us. Any language, any time period and any writing it will instantly translate."

"Whoa." I smile, impressed. "We're speaking German right now?"

"Nein." The Doctor says with a smile. "We're speaking English, but the TARDIS is translating it to German."

"Oh my gosh." I creep around the next building and cover my mouth. I always read about this night in history books. The night of glass, they called it. It was a night when the German Nazis destroyed many, many shops - and even the famous church. Glass litters the street, shining faintly in the moonlight, and people huddle together in the centre of the street while the Nazis surround them.

I've always known this was my least favourite part of history - the wars. But being here makes it so much more real. There's the sound of harsh cries as a man is thrown to the ground, and kicked in the side. I turn away slightly, but this is my fault we're here, and I have to get used to it I suppose.

I don't hear the squeak of a door as I inch backwards and someone runs into me, full pelt. There's a gasp and the someone falls to the ground. When I turn around, I help a young woman to her feet, whose shaking all over.

"i'm so sorry." I apologise.

She jumps, her eyes wide with fear. Tears streak down her face as she looks at the crowd. She can't be older than 12 or 13.

"Hello." The Doctor says softly, hand out for her to shake. "I'm the Doctor. This is Darcy." His eyes follow her gaze. "Are your parents out there?"

She brushes the tears from her eyes, looking at me and him, still paralyzed. "It's alright." I say softly, touching her arm softly. "We're here to help. We're travelers, from far away." She hesitates, after shaking his hand and giving me a rough, wobbly smile before nodding. "My name is Anna. I... managed to hide in the basement for the night until I heard my parents were dragged away and then... I... I didn't know what to do." She starts shaking again. I wrap my arms around her and she leans her head against my shoulder, softly crying. " It was awful. Like nothing I've ever seen before, these monsters."

"The Nazis?" I ask, a little confused.

"No, they're not the Nazi party." She shivers all over again and looks up sharply as the crack of glass echoes behind us.

"It's not safe here." The Doctor pushes his way past the shadowed doorway and starts leading us down the maze of alleyways. I hold onto Anna, whose still shivering with fright as we leave the sound of gunshots and yelling behind us.

******************

"Ah, here we go. Lovely, comfy alley." The Doctor pulls us down a quiet street and into a corner. Anna backs against the wall, shivering.

"I haven't told anyone about this before." She says shakily She's speaking English but I detect a definite German accent. Well, of course, she's speaking German to us. I can't get used to this. "Obviously you know, I am a German Jew." She looks up hurriedly. "But who are you? You are some kind of Doctor and nurse, yes?"

"You could say that." I mutter. "But we're not going to hurt you."

"What are these monsters you keep talking about?" The Doctor seems curious. "Are they like ordinary humans?"

"No." She shudders. "They are awful. Mother and Father hid me in the basement, but there's a small hole in the floorboards where you can see out. I watched them get taken... they.... the monsters look human, but..." Her voice quivers. "When they are exposed to... light they turn into hideous monsters, with razor sharp claws and fur..." She breaks down into sobbing again, hugging the wall behind her.

"Shh." I give her a sideways hug, smoothing her wild curly hair down. "You're safe now." I look at the Doctor and mouthe silently, "what are we going to do?" He shrugs, putting on his thinking face.

"Anna, are you any good at drawing?" He asks suddenly.

She stops sobbing for a second to look at him and nod slightly. "I love art. Of course, it was banned when I had to stop going to school."

"That's alright. Because I'm now officially un-banning it." he smiles and pulls a notepad and pen from his pocket. "Here. Draw me these monsters as well as you can."

She gets to work while we watch her hand moving across the paper confidently, and in a few moments she holds up a rough but very good sketch of a monster, something that reminds me of the beast out of beauty and the beast.

"Thank you Anna." He pulls out his sonic screwdriver and scans the page, linking it up to another device he pulls from his pocket.

"What the..." I stare at his jacket."

"Bigger on the inside." He muses. "Aha! I thought so. These Nazis are certainly not human. They're alien!" He smiles wildly. "Oh, this is good. Very, very clever. The Fandora." He smiles slightly. "Shape-shifters."

Anna's eyes go wide, obviously with no idea what he's talking about. My mind struggles to understand the concept. "You mean they can take the shape of..."

"Anything they want." He finishes for me. "Wel, so long as it's living, moving and breathing. But on one condition - any unnatural light will show them up. And these creatures are brilliant - they're sort of like a werewolf - half human and half... wolf. They have an excellent sense of smell, and I'm guesing that's why they're here, just when they're needed to sniff out..." He stops, seeing Anna. "Well, you know what I mean."

I pull him aside while she studies her drawing. "Doctor, what are we doing? You said fixed events can't be tampered with." I frown at him. "I know that look. You want to sort this out. But what about the events that already happened? The Holocaust really happened and a lot of people died. If we..."

He puts his hand over my mouth with a wild smile. "It's alright. See this event in time - this one's not fixed." He says excitedly. "We can't destroy all the Nazis, but we can destroy the Fandoras. They're not meant to be here. My guess is they probably crash landed on this planet by mistake, and they're doing whatever they can to get back, which could very well include being a very valuable ally to the Nazis. Now, here's what we're going to do. You're going to go back to the TARDIS with Anna. Keep her safe."

"B..." I start to object.

"I know what I said about saving people. But you want to save her as much as I do. I can't go back on people's personal timelines but..." His eyes cloud over. "I can make an exception."

"Say no more." I nod. "What are you going to do?"

"I need to get together a huge, big bonfire." His eyes sparkle. Hopefully the Fandora will be attracted to the light - well - most of them anyway. I'll just have a chat with them and see if I can help them. If I can repair their spaceship then they can leave planet earth and the Nazis alone."

"How are we going to keep safe?" I ask. "And how do we tell if the Nazi is a... Fandora or an actual human being?"

"Here." He flicks me a tiny flashlight. "The unnatural beam will show them up." He presses it on and flashes it against one of the Nazis guarding the street corner. Instead of shining on human, it reveals fur, and sharp fangs wherever the light travels.

"Ooh." I shiver. "that's nasty."

"Stay safe. And stay in the TARDIS. I won't be long. Hopefully." He flashes me a smile and pats Anna on the head. "Keep each other safe. And take this in case you get caught." He shoves a leather wallet at me.

"Uh..." I turn it over. "I really think a blank piece of paper is going to help."

"Psychic paper." He says with a wry smile. "Show it to the Nazis if they pull you up and ask who you are."

"Please, please stay safe." He gives me a hug.

*******************

"Who is this person? This... doctor?" Anna asks. "Is he in medicine."

"A little bit of everything." I smile, trying to think of the Doctor working as... well, a doctor. It's not a long walk back to the TARDIS, keeping to the shadows. The sky is beginning to lighten, marking the end of the horrible night. There's still the faint smell of smoke in the air, and when I look back, the glass still shimmers in the street. Shops are destroyed - whoel livelyhoods ruined.

"Here she is." I reach up to open the door of the TARDIS.

Anna gasps, covering her mouth. "You said you were travelers, you didn't say you had a huge box." She examines the outside and runs her hand hesitantly over the wood. "But this is amazing."

"Yeah that's what I said too." I smile, pulling her down one of the corridoors and into my bedroom. "Hold on, I'll get you some hot chocolate."

She smiles at me. "Don't you drink tea?" I spin around staring at her with a smile.

"I'm not British."

************

I bite my lip waiting for the kettle to boil, rooting through the cupboards. Surely the Doctor has some sort of knock out stuff. I feel terrible having to make her sleep but I want to get out and look for Alex. I know the Doctor doesn't mean to forget the reason we came here, but obviously defeating aliens is more important than finding my brother. "Darn it, don't you have anything?" I root around the cupboards and pull out some sleeping pills at the very back. "Perfect." I pop them into the cup and wait for the water. Feeling a burning in my wrist again, I look back at it. Just like back at the ship, it starts glowing blue, and burning once again. The pain isn't intense, it's just sort of like something's forming. I must remember to tell the Doctor about it.

"Here you go." I put down the hot chocolate. She sits on the bed, fingering the sheets with relish.

"Thank you Darcy. Thank you so much." She sips the drink like it's the last thing she'll ever see on earth. Then her eyes start to grow drowsy.

"Just lie down." I re-arrange the bed covers around her.

"I'm so.... tired..." She mutters and slumps agains the pillows. I tuck her in, flip the psychic paper into my pocket and close the TARDIS door.

I have no idea where I'm going, or how I'm going to find Alex, but I do know that it's not going to be easy.

I creep down the shadowed alleyways, a little nervous. I stop at the corner and watch silently at the procession of Jews. The men are all dressed in their best suits, the women in their dresses, and the children holding their parent's hands tightly. It's so sad. They walk, probably to their death, with their suitcases in hand, neither looking to the right nor the left. None are crying. They all remain stony faced. Even the tiny baby clutched in one mother's weary arms. She drops back from the crowd, her husband nowhere to be seen. Her eyes fill with tears. She has no strength to go on. Then, right there and then a single gunshot rings out. The mother's eyes go wide.

"N..." A strangled cry clings in my throat. I can't help myself. I move forwards, ready to stop this terrible injustice, when something grabs me around the neck and shoulders. A hand winds across my face. I struggle, but the person's grip is too strong. Then I realize that something's in front of my face. I smell the sweet, sickly smell of something that's smothering me. In a few seconds, I give into the pending darkness.
