10. Medusa (2)

"How does a Greek myth have anything to do with this?" I ask, exasparated. "Why can't we just have a nice holiday in ancient Greece without having to worry about more aliens?"

"Well that's the interesting bit isn't it? Why turn people into statues? What purpose does that serve anyone? Lupus, what's the olympic event you're talking about? What happens?"

"Nothing." I say, reading Lupus lips'. "They behead the statues in a new olympic sport." I turn back and put my thinking face on. "That's got to mean they need the humans for something else? But what else do we have? Souls?"

"Oh that's good." The Doctor snaps his fingers together. "Very good. Yes, sould - the human mind and brain - an energy source unlike any other. You may be onto something. But first off, let's go to the Olympics, let's see what happens."

Lupus again tugs on my sleeve. I look down and he mouthes at me. I sigh, snarling a little. "Oh of course I forgot. Women aren't allowed at the Olympics." I roll my eyes. "Looks like you're taking this one on your own, Doctor. Think you can handle it?"

"Oh I don't know." He winks. "Why don't you go and explore? Have some fun. Take this." He throws me his sonic. "And these." He throws me a pair of sunglasses. "If you happen to run into trouble you can use the sonic to tint the lenses. Say you met Medusa..." He shrugs. "It won't happen but just in case. Meet me back at the temple near the Tardis. Say an hour? And for God's sake, don't leave."

"You're giving me your sonic screwdriver? I thought you were physically attatched to it." I say with a wry smile. "And stay out of trouble."

He whips around, brandishing a smile. "I've got no need for my sonic, but you might. And you stay out of trouble."

I stroll along the Grecian streets, taking in all the sights and smells. It's kind of cool being in somewhere so ancient. I can definitely pick out the nobles - their richly decorated stoles and hair pieces. The women seem to spend their time around the markets, smiling and basking in the sun, adorning themselves in jewellry.

"I shall return, Mother!" I turn around to watch a good looking Greek guy patting his mother on the hand. "I promise you this. But I must go and find the beast. If I can kill it it will stop all of this. I must go."

"God speed my son." The mother buries her face in her slaves shoulder who gives her an awkward side hug.

I run to catch up with the attractive Greek. "Hi - greetings - how goes it..." I shake my head. "My name is Darcy. I can help you on your mission."

"You? A girl." He sniffs proudly, holding onto his sword. "You wouldn't even know where we're going."

My mind whirls back to ancient history lessons. "What's your name?" I ask curiously. "It's not Perseus, is it?"

"How do you know?" He tilts his head forwards as he mounts his horse.

"We're going to the Gorgon's lair, right?"

He sighs, eyes thick with confusion. "Are you a magician?"

"Nope." I say. "But I can help you. What's it to be?"

"Well... alright then." He leans down his hand. "But I can't be responsible for you."

"I can take care of myself, thank you." I retort. "Do you even know where we're going?"

"No idea." He swings off in a direction. "This way!"

I pull out the sonic and turn it over. "If I remember rightly I can scan for alien interference... aha!" I lean forwards and pull the horse's reigns so we're trotting in the opposite direction.

"Oi!" His green eyes glare at me as he turns around. "I know where we're going."

"Oh yeah, do you have a beeping thing?" I hold it up as the signal intensifies.

He scowls.

(3rd Person P.O.V. (First time, too! Count yourselves lucky, although it's not going to be in the Doctor's POV, sorry. ;)

The Doctor ignores the screaming crowd around him and corrects his glasses slightly. The discuss throwing was incredibly boring, but the crowd don't seem to mind seeing naked men throwing around disks in the air. He perks up slightly as the slaves start wheeling in human-sized statues. "Hello." He mutters slightly.

The announcer rattles off the rules and the athletes line up in a row. Number 1 takes aim, and lobs the head off the statue in a clean shot of his sword.

The crowd erupts in cheers as the statue is wheeled away and a fresh one takes its place. Frowning, he heads down the stairs with Lupus trailing behind him.

"Sorry." He taps an official on the shoulder. The official turns around, his olive leaf garland glinting.

"Excuse me? Where you talking to me?"

"Yes. I'm just visiting from... far away. Just wondering - how did this new sport come to be?"

"It's not really worth talking about." The official shrugs. "The head of the games only said they came from the local statue maker, whose been doing a roaring trade of late. This sport has really taken off - excuse me I have work to do." he brushes past to one of the athletes whose looking pained.

"Lupus, we have to go find Medusa. You with me?" Lupus nods and mouthes something. "Oh, no." The Doctor smiles at him. "I know you'd do anything for her. Come on." He looks around.

"It's got to be near here somewhere." I point the sonic in the air. Its beeps have increased from a steady rythm to a rapid set of noises.

"Ooh, a giant stone building out in the middle of the desert. We've been traveling for hours. This has got to be it." I point to the huge stone temple. "Why else would there be a temple built out in the middle of nowhere?"

"You talk very strangely." Perseus says. His blond hair clings to his forehead.

"Yeah thanks." I swing the sonic around. "It HAS to be in this temple, pull over." I realize we're on a horse. "Uh... just... you know what I mean." He pulls his sword from his belt. "Let me handle this, my lady. You've traveled far enough."

"What, so I can just wait out here in the blistering heat." I run up the temple steps with him following behind. "I don't flipping think so Perseus. Actually I'm going to call you Percy, because Perseus is such a hard name to say. Alright with you?"

"That's my mother's pet name." He pouts.

"Suits you." I pant as he overtakes me on the stairs and slams his hands into the heavily sealed door.

"This is impossible. What is this material?" He pushes against it, muscles bulging.

"Get out of the way goldie locks." I push him aside and sonic the door. It springs back with a jump. Amazing, all this alien technology. It's so modern. Actually makes me feel slightly at home.

"That is witchcraft." He points to the sonic in my hand. "What is that strange glowing light? Are you a god?" He whispers in awe, starting to kneel before me.

"Oh get up. I'm... the great god Athena." I say with a small smile.

"WHAT?!" He draws his sword immediately. "You turned Medusa into what she is!"

"Uh... no that was the other goddess Athena." I say lamely.

He doesn't stop pointing his sword. "Who are you?"

"An excellent question." A smooth voice, as smooth as honey, says.

"Cover you eyes!" Percy shouts urgently. I don't have to ask who this is. No doubt it's the famous Medusa. I shut my eyes immediately, reaching up to delicately push Percy's sword down.

"Athena? The Goddess that cursed me. Is it true?" I can hear Medusa's footsteps echo around me, and all of a sudden something cold brushes my shoulder. Please, dear God don't tell me it was one of the snakes that is her hair. Quickly, I pull out the sunglasses, thanking the Doctor profusely in my head and shoving them on, opening my eyes hesitantly. I almost scream at the creature before me.

She looks human everywhere else, but her hair rattles. About a thousand green snake heads appear, slithering around her shoulders and hissing at me, and her eyes glow a ghastly green colour - an emereld green colour. I realise she's still waiting for an answer. It's probably our best bet to keep me alive for the moment.

"Y.. yes Medusa I'm uh... Athena and my slave.. Percy." I indicate Percy, whose got one hand over his eyes, trembling. So match for the hero that cut off her head. "Why are you killing all these people?" I ask heatedly. "The plan was... not for you to kill people." I almost facepalm myself. If only the Doctor was here. He'd know exactly what to say.

"My dear I have waited a long time for this moment." Medusa comes down beside me, and motions with her hand. "Come let me show you what I have been working on."

I shiver from the touch of her cold hand and nod to Percy. "Stay here... slave."

"Oi! I happen to be the noble..." He shuts his mouth suddenly. "Yes Mistress."

"I understand why you cursed me." Medusa continues, leading me through the stone hallways. Without a doubt, this place is... awesome. It is beautiful. There's fountains everywhere, flowing with water, and gardens that are hidden in the stone walls, with tiny flowers climbing up, gripping onto the stones.

"The fountains." Medusa sighs. "Remind me so much of the old days. I was foolish. I boasted too much of my own beauty, and used to look at myself every day. But never again. I am changed, great Athena."

"Then why are you still killi... wow." I breathe out as we come into an open courtyard. Standing in front of me is a huge machine. On the side is a stone chair, hooked up to cables, and finally hooked up to the massive machine that bubbles and spits.

"You cursed me like this for eternity. So I sought help." She waves something out of the shadows. Three rather ugly people come into view. They look like witches almost, with long gray hair and pointed teeth.

"These are the sisters of Gorgon. Welcome to our lair."
