Telling the Truth
Miguel stood in his office, staring at the screens. He sighed heavily as Miles walked over to him.
"What is it, Miles?" He sighed. "You know exactly why I'm here," the boy nearly growled.
Miguel turned to him, a frown on his face.
"Now's not the time," he said. "Like hell it's not!" Miles growled, "you need to tell her about this! This is the first time she's lost her mom. This is her first Canon Event! And you didn't tell her!"
Miguel growled, glaring at him, "and why haven't you or Gwen told her? How would she react if she found out that the two people she trusted kept a secret as big as this from her?"
"You don't get to turn that around on us," Miles snarled, "you knew that my dad would die and you tried to keep me from saving him."
"He's still here," Miguel growled. Miles' fist shook before he swung it at the older man who quickly dodged it and grabbed him by the neck and pinned him to the railing.
Miles let out a choked growl and kicked at him but Miguel didn't let go. He didn't tighten his grip either.
The two glared at each other.
"Hey! Stop it!"
The two whipped their heads around to see Lyla, Peter B., Hobie, and Gwen.
"Let him go," Peter B. frowned, glaring at Miguel. The man frowned deeply and he glared at Miles who didn't hesitate to glare back at him.
"Por el amor de Dios," Miguel muttered before he let go of Miles and stepped back. Miles glared at him before he jumped down and landed next to the others.
Gwen firmly grabbed his arm and lifted his head to take a look at his neck. There wasn't any bruises or any other injuries.
Miguel had turned away, his eyes narrowing before he looked at the screens. "Lyla... try to find out where Polina is," he said.
A portal appeared in front of him.
"Time for me to pay a visit," he sighed before he went through it.
After yesterday's events, Gwen, Miles, Margo, Pavitr and Hobie had helped Polina move into a little spot next to her and her dad's apartment. They also gave her a portal bracelet.
As far as anyone knew, Polina had no other living relatives and it made Miguel feel uneasy and worried.
He sighed silently before he jumped into the room, startling Polina who quickly sat upright.
"What... what are you doing here?" She asked, surprised and a bit nervous.
"We need to talk," he said, deactivating his mask. She frowned and hugged her knees to her chest, looking away from him.
"Polina... I know you may not want to talk to anyone right now," he said and knelt down in front of her, "but what happened was not your fault."
"She was my mom," she said bitterly, tears beginning to fall even though she didn't want them to. But they just kept coming.
"I know... I know," he said, "but you need to understand-" "I failed, Miguel," she said, gripping her shirt, "I failed as a hero... as Spider-Woman... as a daughter."
"Polina, I know you did your best. But you have to remember that you're still a person who can make mistakes," he paused, thinking of his next words, "no matter what happened, nothing can change that you loved your mother and would never intentionally let her be in danger."
"She's still gone. I failed. I sh-should've done better. I could have done more!" Polina whimpered, her hands shaking, "b-but it feels like I failed her. I could have done something!"
Miguel stood up, "Polina, listen to me. It is not and never will be your fault. Nothing would have changed if you had done something differently," he paused again, "just because we can't save everyone doesn't make us any less heroic nor less human. You can't save everyone."
Polina stood up, "but I could've saved her if I had just-" "Polina, you can't! It's a Canon Event!" Miguel exclaimed and she froze.
He held back a flinch as she stared at him, bewildered and upset.
"A... Canon Event?" She murmured. Miguel sighed deeply, closing his eyes for a moment. "Yes... all of the Spider-People at HQ are bound to what really happens in their lives. That's what makes us who we are. And in your case... you were bound to lose your mother."
Polina stared at him before she turned away, her breath trembling. She stared at the floor.
Miguel looked at her and slowly lifted a hand. "I know it's a lot to take in-" "You knew," she growled before she spun around to face him, an angry expression on her face, "YOU KNEW! And yet you didn't tell me anything!?"
"Yes... I knew," Miguel said calmly, "had I told you, you would've tried to stop it. Just like Miles. We can't do anything to change it."
Polina gritted her teeth, her fists shaking.
"But what if we could?" She growled, "what if we could break the Canon Event?!"
Disappointment flashed over Miguel's features. "Polina, listen to me very carefully," he said sternly, "if you or anyone else tried to break the event, it would be catastrophic. Not only for you but for everyone, understand? We can't-"
"AND HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT FOR CERTAIN?!" Polina shouted.
"BECAUSE I TRIED TO BREAK IT MYSELF!" Miguel yelled and she flinched back, her eyes widening.
She stared up at him.
He let out a deep sigh, "if you break it... the consequences will be severe... I'm sorry."
The tension in Polina's body disappeared and her arms fell at her sides before she broke down sobbing.
Miguel knelt down and pulled her into a hug.
She clung to him. Her mind was filled with a lot of things but all she felt was bitterness and sadness. Her heart hurt. Not just for herself but for everyone who had gone through the same thing she had.
"It's okay," Miguel said softly. Polina rested her head against his chest, staring at the floor.
"What is the point of being a hero if you can't keep the ones you love the most safe?" She asked.
"It's always going to be impossible to prevent everyone from getting hurt," he said, "you may not have saved your mother... but you saved countless others. The point of being a hero is knowing that you can't save everyone but you can try anyway. Your mother was so proud to see what you were striving for. And you know that, deep down, she will always be with you."
He gently rested his head on hers. "You're not alone," he said, "not now, not ever."
She glanced at the watch on her wrist before she exhaled softly.
"You said Miles tried to break it," she said. Miguel frowned, "he did... and... a lot of things happened that day."
She pulled away. "Did you... ever get the information about the wolf?"
"Yes," he said, "apparently it was a science experiment created by someone named Irene Black."
Polina blinked a few times. Why did that name sound familiar?
Miguel looked at her and saw the look on her face.
"Did your mom know her?" He asked carefully.
She took a deep breath and exhaled. "I... I don't know," she said, rubbing her head. Miguel frowned in worry before he gently rubbed her head and she looked up at him.
"Get some rest," he said. He helped her sit down.
She nodded a little and wiped her face. "I'm... guessing the others are mad at you?" She asked hesitantly.
"Are you?" He asked. She wrapped her arms around herself.
"A little...," she said softly. Miguel hummed softly as he got up.
"Can you stay?" Polina asked suddenly and he looked at her in surprise.
"Please? Just... just until I can try and get some sleep," she said. Miguel stared at her. For a moment, he saw his daughter.
She would always have a nightmare and he'd stay to comfort her in any way he could.
He sighed silently before he sat down on the edge of the bed.
Polina curled up into a ball, pulling the blanket over her shoulder. After a while, she slowly fell asleep.
Miguel looked at her and he gently rubbed her head before he frowned and stood up. He climbed out the window and leapt up into the air.
