Some Questions are Better Left Unanswered
After the mission- if anyone could call it that, Polina and Gwen had went back to HQ.
Polina laid down on the couch, curling up into a ball. Pavitr and Hobie looked at each other before they walked over and sat down beside her.
"How are you feeling?" Hobie asked. "Like crap," Polina sighed, taking off her mask.
"I'm sure you did your best to get those bad guys," Pavitr said reassuringly.
Polina smiled a little before she sighed as she sat up. "What bothers me is that we don't know what those guys were doing. And that technology was crazy," she said, "I didn't think people still created that kind of stuff."
"I'm pretty sure they don't," Miles said, "at least, not on my earth." "I don't think they do that on my earth either," Gwen sighed as she sat down.
Polina fiddled a little. "Can I tell you guys something?"
"Yeah, of course," Miles said. She took a breath and let it out.
"I don't think Miguel trusts me," she said, "and Jess... I think she's worried about me. About my powers."
Gwen frowned.
"It's weird. Miles has electrokinesis and I have the traits of a wolf," Paige chuckled, "and I was bitten by a radioactive spider. A wolf spider, to be exact. And I don't even know if my powers are working."
"Maybe now's the time to start," Hobie said and Polina, Gwen, Miles and Pavitr looked at him.
He stood up, "come on."
They walked out of the lobby and to the training room.
"So... what are we doing?" Polina asked. "Training," Hobie said simply. She raised an eyebrow.
He pointed to a dummy, "fight that."
Polina looked at it and frowned slightly. Her eyes suddenly narrowed and a low growl escaped her as she crouched low.
Hobie, Pavitr, Gwen and Miles stepped back.
Polina charged at the dummy and tackled it hard with a wolf-like snarl. She growled loudly, her teeth bared.
She blinked a few times before she looked at the others nervously.
Hobie chuckled.
Polina blushed and stood up, "I didn't think a wolf spider could actually-!" "I mean," Miles chuckled, "if you really think about it, Miguel was bitten by a vampire spider."
Polina blinked in surprise before she furrowed a brow and opened her mouth to say something but Gwen stopped her.
"No, he doesn't drink blood," she chuckled. Polina nodded, "well... that's good to know, I guess." She looked at her hands before she glared at Miles but it didn't hold any malice.
"Then how come you have electrokinesis!" She exclaimed and the boy laughed. She playfully beat at his shoulder, "not fair, not fair, not fair!"
Miles laughed and raised his hands in defense. "Hey, it's not my fault. It's just the luck of the spider bite, I guess."
Gwen smirked and nudged Polina. "Don't worry, Pol. We all have unique powers. It's what makes us a great team."
Polina sighed and smiled, realizing that they were right. It didn't matter if her powers were different or unusual. What mattered was how she used them to help others.
"Thanks, guys," she said, feeling a sense of belonging and acceptance. "I appreciate your support."
Hobie clapped his hands together. "Alright, enough chit-chat. Let's get back to training. We've got a mission coming up and we need to be ready."
Polina nodded and took her position, ready to hone her newfound skills. As she looked at her teammates, she couldn't help but feel grateful for them.
In the office, Miguel was watching the group train before he looked back at the screen that was on Earth-777. The camera zoomed in on a large wolf attacking in the middle of the city.
Miguel narrowed his eyes as he watched.
"Lyla," he said. "Yes, Miguel?" Lyla responded promptly.
"Alert Miles, Gwen and the others," he said firmly. She nodded and disappeared in a quick flash.
She appeared in the training room. Polina yelped as she fell backwards in surprise and everyone looked at Lyla.
"What is it?" Gwen asked. "Miguel needs you. He's got a mission," she said. She glanced at Polina before she disappeared.
Hobie and Pavitr exchanged looks of concern, worried about both the urgency of the mission and the effect it might have on Polina. They knew that whatever Miguel had discovered must be serious for him to interrupt their training like this.
"We should go too," Hobie determined, his voice filled with determination. Pavitr nodded in agreement and they quickly followed after Lyla, catching up with Gwen, Miles, and Polina.
As they arrived in Miguel's office, they found him sitting at his desk, intensely focused on the screen displaying the wolf attack in Earth-777. His eyes were narrowed, his expression grave.
"Glad you all could make it," Miguel said in a serious tone, not even glancing away from the screen. "We have a problem. This wolf creature you see here is from an alternate universe, just like all of you. It has crossed over into our reality, and it's causing havoc in the city."
Gwen's brows furrowed. "So, what's the plan?"
"Polina," Miguel turned his attention to her, his gaze softened. "I know you're still figuring out your powers, but your unique abilities might give us an advantage against this creature."
Polina gulped, her nervousness rising at the weight of Miguel's words. However, determination sparked in her eyes as she nodded. "I'll do my best, Miguel. Count me in."
Miguel nodded approvingly. "Good. The rest of you, the usual plan. Gwen, you take the lead. Miles, keep the civilians out of harm's way. Hobie, Pavitr, provide support and cover. We need to contain this threat before it causes any more damage."
The team quickly gathered their gear as Miguel adjusted his own suit. With the mission at hand, they swung into action.
In the city, the wolf was clawing at empty cars as people ran away from the terrifying scene.
The Spiders flew out the portal and Gwen slammed her foot against the wolf's temple, sending it stumbling sideways.
Miles, Hobie and Pavitr swung ahead to get the civilians away from the danger.
Gwen and Polina swung over the wolf's head. Webs wrapped around it's muzzle.
It let out a muffled snarl and shook its head wildly. Polina dug her feet into the ground as she kept a tight grip on her webs.
"What kind of wolf comes rampaging through the city?!" Miles exclaimed.
"Don't know," Hobie chuckled. The wolf reared up on it's hind legs. Polina and Gwen yelped as they were pulled up off their feet.
Miles cursed before he leapt up and kicked the wolf in the head. The wolf snarled again before it spun around and slammed its paw into Miguel, sending him flying backwards into a building.
Polina widened her eyes before she growled. Once she tightened her grip on her webs and she swung up and onto the wolf's muzzle.
She kicked it in the eye. It yelped and shook its head frantically. Polina yelped and she gripped onto the wolf's ear.
"Hold on, Pol!" Pavitr exclaimed. "What do you think I'm doing!?" The girl exclaimed, her eyes shut tight.
The wolf snarled and stumbled backwards, it's tail knocking over buildings. Polina looked at one building in particular and she felt her heart stop.
It was destroyed.
"MOM!" Polina screamed. Gwen, Miles, Pavitr and Hobie widened their eyes.
Miguel snarled before he bit down on the wolf's neck. It yelped before it fell to the ground, limp.
Polina jumped down from the wolf's head and she ran over to the rubble. She pushed it aside before she widened her eyes.
Her mom laid on the ground, covered in cuts, dirt and bruises. There was a large gash on her side.
"No... no, no, no!" She whimpered, "Parakaló, xypníste. Mom... Mom, xýpna."
Her mom, Ember, groaned softly and slowly opened her eyes and she looked up at Polina.
She smiled weakly, "Polina... fotáki mou." She placed her hand on her daughter's chest, "I'm... so proud of you."
"I-I'm sorry," Polina whimpered. "Sh-shh...," Ember whispered, reaching up and placing her hand on her cheek, "I will... always love you... no matter who you are."
Her eyes drifted over to Hobie, Gwen, Pavitr and Miles. Miguel stood nearby.
"Take... care of my baby girl," Ember said softly. "We will," Gwen said softly.
Ember smiled weakly before her eyes landed on Polina and they slowly closed.
"Mama... Mama!" Polina whimpered, tears streaming down her cheeks, "Mama! MAMA!"
She let out a mix of a broken scream and a sob. Gwen and Miles walked over and knelt down next to Polina.
She whimpered and buried her face into Gwen's shoulder as Miles placed his hand over hers.
Miguel sighed softly and he walked over to them. "We... we have to go," he said.
Polina whimpered softly, shivering a little. Miles frowned at Miguel but the other ignored him as he knelt down and scooped Polina into his arms.
She started for a moment before she slowly relaxed against him, her head slumping into his neck. He blinked before his eyes softened.
A portal opened up and the group went through.
