Adjusting

It had only been a week and Polina was standing on the roof. She looked out at the city. She was back in Earth-777.

She had missed a lot. She took a breath before she shot out her webs and swung through the air.

"My name is Polina Kittle. I was just a regular girl up until I was bitten by a radioactive spider. And for the past two and a half years, I've been this world's one and only... Spider-Woman," she murmured as she swung up onto the wall of a tall building.

She sat down and looked herself over. Like Miguel, she could grow claws and they were really dragon-like. Once she even sliced them through a piece of metal during training.

And she could make her webs non-flammable whenever she felt like it but since she didn't want them to destroy anything, she decided to keep them like normal but it didn't stop them from glowing. And the fact that she herself could breathe fire was concerning.

Hobie called it her 'heatray', much to the amusement of Peter B and Pavitr and much to the annoyance of Miguel.

"I'm... part of the Spider Society in a dimension called Earth-928. And I've made some good friends," Polina murmured, "I... even experienced my first Canon Event."

She sighed and tossed her head back. She laid down against the wall and listened to the sounds of the car horns below.

She stared at the sky. She wondered how much she missed while being at the Society.

She sat up when her Gizmo went off. "Lyla?" She said.

"Heeeeey, girlie!" The AI said as she appeared in her holographic self on the Gizmo, "Miles wanted me to ask you to come to his Dimension."

"Is everything okay?" Polina asked. "Yeah," Lyla replied, waving her hand, "apparently it's a family get-together."

She frowned and sighed as she rubbed her face. "I'll be there," she said, "just... give me a few minutes."

"On it," Lyla said before she disappeared. Polina looked up at the sky. She wasn't going to admit it out loud but she felt so away from the others. She had gotten these new powers and for what?

She dug her hands into the wall and they turned into claws. A feral snarl escaped her lips and she slammed them into the wall.

She stared at her claws before she transformed them back into her hands. A portal opened and she went through it.

On the other side, she appeared outside of the Morales household and she could hear laughter.

She hesitated and looked down. She walked closer to the door and knocked.

The door opened and Rio smiled. "You must be Polina," she said.

"Yes ma'am," Polina nodded as she was let inside. She saw Hobie, Gwen, Pavitr and Miles talking and laughing.

"Pol!" Pavitr exclaimed happily, "glad you could make it!"

"A family get together? Wouldn't miss that for the world," she chuckled as she sat beside him. She looked over at Jeff who was in the kitchen.

She stared at him before she looked at her hands. "I'm surprised they haven't freaked out," she said. Miles looked at her, "well... they were... kinda worried about me getting hurt but they're really understanding now."

Polina hummed. Gwen furrowed her eyebrows, "are you okay?"

"M'fine," she replied, leaning back against the couch. Hobie furrowed his eyebrows.

"...you beat the Spot, you changed your Canon Event," Polina said, glaring at the floor, "you even met...," she paused and shook her head before she got up.

"Excuse me," she said sharply and she walked out of the house. Miles and Gwen exchanged worried glances. Hobie frowned and he got up and walked after her.

Polina leaned against the wall, pressing her palms against her face.

"You're upset about something, luv," he said. She looked at him then looked away.

"It's nothing," she said quietly.

He chuckled, "right and I'm an Alaskan Husky, mate. What's the matter?"

She rubbed her face, "I... I think I'm jealous. Or maybe it's envy? I don't know. And it's not Miles' fault. He's a good guy, everyone knows it but... he changed it all. He's changed the lives of me, you, Gwen and Pavitr. Hell, he's together with Gwen."

She looked at the sky, "where does that leave me?" "You're with us, aren't ya?" He asked, "I think you're giving yourself some negativity because you feel like you're alone."

Polina looked away, frowning. She wanted to tell him that it wasn't that simple. She gripped her knees tightly.

Hobie placed a hand on her shoulder. "You fit in with us just fine, Pol. Nothing is ever gonna change that."

She looked at him before she smiled and nodded, "thanks, Hobie."

"Anytime, luv!" He wrapped his arm around her shoulders, "now let's head back inside yeah? I'm sure everyone is planning on embarrassing Miles somehow."

Polina chuckled slightly, "wouldn't want that to happen."

The two got up and walked back into the house. Polina watched as Rio told Gwen and Pascal about things that Miles did when he was a baby, much to the latter's dismay.

But she kept quiet as she listened to the laughter. She slowly closed her eyes and started tuning them out despite a small part of her not wanting to do so.

The laughter grew more and more muffled and she leaned back, her head resting on the couch's arm.

Rio looked at her and she smiled softly before she covered her with a blanket. As Hobie, Pavitr, Gwen and Miles went upstairs, Rio got up and walked over to Jeff.

"Hey," he chuckled. "Hey," she replied, "so... how are you dealing with all of this?"

Polina opened one eye as she listened.

"It's... a lot," Jeff chuckled, "but... if it makes our son happy then I'll deal with it."

Rio smiled and she kissed his cheek. "Why do you think he has the best parents?" She asked playfully.

"Didn't we ground him once?" Jeff asked and the two laughed softly.

Polina gripped the blanket tightly, tears slipping down her cheeks. She pulled the blanket over her head and pressed her hands against her mouth as she silently cried.
